The issue with the current archives is that pipermail is a mailman 2 thing, and mailman 2 has been deprecated for mailman 3 for a while now and it's not available in distro packager managers anymore. So something needs to be figured out to turn it into a static site or something else that's actually maintained. On 2022-10-06 12:53, David Woolley wrote: The problem I'd have with pidgin as anything but pure email format would be that it is very low volume. I don't like web sites being able to intrude, with notifications. I fail to follow. If anything, a web forum is /less/ intrusive than an email list, as you have better control over notifications. Typically, what I find with support forums, is that the people making one time appearances, to ask a question, prefer forums, because they are fashionable, but those who stick around and answer tend to prefer mailing lists. However both mailing list and forum camps can have a serious amount of religious fervour. I prefer forums because they make it easier for me to find what I am looking for, even when it is questions to answer. The risk with forums in high volume cases, is that they fragment, because lots of people want to own their own forum. That may be true for purely social ones, but there is little reason for technical forums to fragment. Even if mailing lists fragment, you can use mail filters to put them back together, albeit you still run the risk of the same question getting asked on all of them, and the complete answer being spread across them. Pidgin is not that popular so there is little risk of its support forum/list to get anywhere close to "high volume". (Compare to, say, Red Flag Deals https://forums.redflagdeals.com - 1.9M threads, 30M posts, 1.3M registered users. Imagine managing that in a mailing list) I would even say that the fact that Pidgin doesn't have a discussion forum more accessible to new users is more than a contributing factor. Fragmenting is also not a risk, since the people will go where the developers are to answer their questions. If Discourse can provide the mailing list experience to some and a web forum experience to others, I see it as the best compromise. ___ Support@pidgin.im mailing list Want to unsubscribe? I also see lots of replies to list and to me as well and it drives me crazy. Those are valid concerns, and I have asked on the Discourse metaforum. I will follow up when I get a reply. Mailing lists have worked for me for way over 35 years so I am resistant to change. I've used BBSes (V.22bis dial-up), mailing lists, Usenet, various proprietary "groups", and Web Forums of all kinds. If Discourse allows one to subscribe "to everything" and reply to posts with email, then you get pretty much a mailing list in your email client. I don't know if Discourse allows that, but if somebody confirms, then there should be no problem. I can confirm. See my other email to this list for details. Discourse bills itself as a mailing lit alternative, and as such offers a smooth and gradual transition, allowing people that prefer the mailing list experience to keep it. We were asked to vote, I vote against anything that looks like a forum and has a web interface. YMMV. I'm also against any type of forum and prefer stay with the list. I understand your reluctance to use a web interface, but Discourse can be configured to behave exactly like a mailing list for the people that prefer that mode of communication. On 2022-10-06 05:52, Gary Kramlich wrote: Greetings Programs! As some of you may be aware, we've been in the process of transitioning our email lists to a new server. Well, managing email in 2022 is tedious and unforgiving so it's taking forever and I always have a ton more on my plate that's easier to do. As such, the idea has come up to migrate to Discource instead. Because of this, I'm trying to see how others feel about this and how we should go about importing things. They are listed below. I've tried looking to see if I can anonymize the archive, but haven't found anything mentioning that as a possibility yet. Why does it matter? Currently, the archives are open for the whole Internet to see. Please respond as soon as possible as I would really like to start on this migration no later than 2022-10-14. When it comes to this migration, are you for or against it? (Please answer yes/no/doesn't matter) I have always been in favour of forums over mailing lists due to the added flexibility and control that they offer, so this is a resounding YES from me. I am not familiar with Discourse in particular, but I checked their web site, and they say that the platform integrates with email: | Reply via email | | When you aren’t active on the website, your notifications will be automatically sent to you via email. Reply via email from anywhere, on any device. So the people that prefer to use email can continue with their current workflow. *Edit before sending* I dug a bit deeper and this is what their FAQ says: | Discourse can be used as a mailing list | | With properly configured incoming mail, Discourse can be used just like a mailing list. If you’ll be interacting with Discourse exclusively by email, consider enabling Mailing list mode in your personal preferences, provided it’s enabled on your forum. I registered an account on a Discourse board to check, and indeed there is this setting: | Mailing list mode | [_] Enable mailing list mode | This setting overrides the activity summary. | Muted topics and categories are not included in these emails. And most interestingly, if the server is configured to allow it, you don't even have to set up an account! | Enable “Accept emails from anonymous users with no accounts” if you want staged users to be created when an incoming email address does not exists yet. When it comes to this migration, would you like to have users imported into the new system? (Please answer yes/no/doesn't matter) It does not matter to me. Registering an account with the same email takes 2 minutes. That said, if makes it transparent and zero-effort for the people that prefer to continue using email, then I am all for it. When it comes to the archives, would you prefer to have it imported into the new system? (Please answer yes/no/doesn't matter) It does not matter to me. If it makes the archives searchable and minimizes the number of times that the same questions need to be answered over and over again, then I am for it. If it makes the migration more complicated, then it can be dropped. Thank you, Alex. ___ Support@pidgin.im mailing list Want to unsubscribe? Use this link: https://lists.pidgin.im/listinfo/support

Unfortunately, no. Several things could go wrong: * Something on your computer interferes with the connection (I think somebody once had an issue with peerguardian installed) * Your ISP messes with the connection * The server does not like your IP address * The server does not like your account * You've been cursed by the elder gods I would try installing an XMPP client on your mobile device and trying to connect from it, both via your wifi (same external IP and ISP) and turning wifi off via cellular data (different IP and ISP), to narrow it down. You can also try the web client at https://chat.jabb.im/ and maybe check https://jabb.im/antispam/ (whatever it may be) See if the Jabbim FAQ helps (Q. 4 in particular), and try their online support at https://chat.jabb.im/?r=jab...@chat.jabb.im= or email them at supp...@jabbim.zendesk.com In fact that should have been your first course of action, given that the problem manifests with multiple clients. Also, try creating an account with a different server (jabber.at is the one I use) and see if you get the same issue with them. As a last resort, sacrifice a black goat to Cthulhu. Extra spaces added when pasting from the web
When I paste text into Pidgin, some spaces in the text are doubled. For example: Copying the following text from https://news.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=14962134=59279246 The rich by far pay more in the total taxes collected that the middle and lower classes, even if the tax rates are off. This is because they earn more of their income through things like stock (which is taxed differently than regular income). There are many reasons for this, and they are not loopholes: Tax income is treated like investment income because it is subject to risk. And pasting it into Pidgin produces the following text: The rich by far pay more in the total taxes collected that the middle and lower classes, even if the tax rates are off. This is because they earn more of their income through things like stock (which is taxed differently than regular income). There are many reasons for this, and they are not loopholes: Tax income is treated like investment income because it is subject to risk. Note the extra spaces between the words "middle" and "and", "they" and "earn", "taxed" and "differently", and so on. When I view the source of the web page, the extra spaces are not present: The rich by far pay more in the total taxes collected that the middle and lower classes, even if the tax rates are off. This is because they earn more of their income through things like stock (which is taxed differently than regular income). There are many reasons for this, and they are not loopholes: Tax income is treated like investment income because it is subject to risk. The fight over tax rate fairness is a misguided effort to raise anger at the rich when in fact they already pay disproportionately a large share of the total tax revenue.Note also that in the US, the middle and lower classes pay lower tax rates and total tax dollars than similar classes in European countries (where the social safety nets in terms of social security, health care, etc, are much higher). If we are talking about Medicare for All, that won't be paid for by increasing taxes on the rich. Instead, we'd most likely be looking at tax rates in France or Scandinavia where they effective tax rates are around 40%. Let's see how popular that messaging is. This problem happens consistently. Re: Unicode emojis shown as tofu
Doesn't Pidgin on Linux use a version that supports Emoji? Why not achieve parity? Also, what "new version" of GTK is needed? I was trying the latest version of 2.x, my attempts at using 3.x failed completely. I have no experience of working with GTK, and frankly this experience feels like going to the doctor with a stomach ache and being told to manually remove my own appendix. Using the themes is hardly a solution since I doubt they have all of the unicode emojis that people use. That said, can you suggest one that is reasonable extensive? Thank you, Alex. I'll send through the link shortly when I'm back at my computer We're talking about whether or not to include a newer GTK in the next Pidgin, but there are some downsides such as increased memory usage and more leaking GDI handles. A panel showing the error appears at the bottom of the contact list. I need to click a button there to reconnect. The reconnecting practically always works. The problem is, I don't want to have to click a button to reconnect. I simply want Pidgin to reconnect automatically when I start it or when I wake the computer. I also certainly don't want an account to become disabled without me intentionally and explicitly choosing to disable it. Reading elsewhere, it seems Pidgin is supposed to reconnect automatically except after fatal errors. I don't know what's going on. Are protocols inappropriately reporting some errors as fatal? Right now, I simply want this to work. Reconnecting automatically after all errors, regardless of whether they're considered fatal, would be fine with me. Something like Miranda NG's KeepStatus plugin would be ideal. Ideally, automatic reconnecting ought to abort after some number of consecutive failed attempts, but if it keeps trying forever, I'm okay with that. Is there some plugin or setting which will do what I want, or do I need to edit the source code? There are some protocols that do not support multiple connections for the same user id, and will automatically disconnect the "old" connections. Consider what an automatic reconnection will do in this case: 1. You connect from your home desktop as "Boris Gjenero". 2. You leave home without disconnecting and connect from your laptop, also as "Boris Gjenero". 3. The server recognizes a duplicate connection and forcefully disconnects desktop connection. 4. Pidgin on desktop detects disconnection and automatically reconnects. 5. The server recognizes a duplicate connection and forcefully disconnects laptop connection. 6. In reply to all three questions quoted below: Pidgin is a multi-protocol chat *client*, and as such uses 3rd-party servers and protocols, one of which is AIM. According to the notification, come December 15th, access to the AIM servers will be turned off, so Pidgin will not be able to access them (just as the native AIM client). In order to continue chatting with your buddies that currently use AIM, both of you will have to use another protocol, on a different server, and that means a new account. I cannot, possibly, be the first person to have this thought, right? Although I've never seen any such discussion here, at least from what I can find. I would think the smartest way for such a thing to be successful would be to make it as compatible as possible with third-party software, such as Pidgin. I don't have the programming chops to undertake this all by myself, so I'd need to hire outsource programmers. I have some specific ideas of format and features, but before I get into all that, I'd like some general feedback; feasibility, technicalities, economics of the idea, etc. Maybe I *am* crazy, but you never know, 'til you ask. (Apologies, in advance, that this isn't a true support inquiry, but since, at this point, it's mostly a technical inquiry, this was the best forum I could think of.) ___ Support@pidgin.im mailing list Want to unsubscribe? Their many advantages over mailing lists include: - Easier searching for existing solutions. - Fine-grained control over email notifications. - The ability to display prominent explanation of what support can be expected. This subject produces very polarised response whenever it comes up on other mailing lists, but from my point of view: I would like to comment on your points. But before I do, please keep in mind that I am advocating the use of a forum for the SUPPORT mailing list, which is supposed to be open for a wide array of users, who cannot be assumed to be technically savvy, familiar with nettiquette, etc. - I can afford to be on a lot more mailing lists that forums (with forums you have to go and visit each one to see if there are updates); No, you do not. The forum software can be configured to send email notifications for responses to the threads you are following, as well as for new posts in the sub-forums that you are interested in, including the full text of the message. So in effect you can treat them as a mailing list but with finer control, with the only "inconvenience" of having to click a link when you want to reply. And, contrary to mailing lists, I can choose not to be sent replies to threads I am not interested in. - mailing lists provide a consistent user interface; See above. Plus, core BBCode is standard across most (if not all) forum software. - although possibly not an issue with Pidgin, forums tend to result in fragmentation, as people tend to belong to just one forum, and forums are often advertising funded, so their operators tend to have an incentive to get people to use their forum, rather than any other forum covering the subject, exacerbating that fragmentation; This is completely irrelevant to the Pidgin support list. - forums don't allow you to maintain an offline archive that you can search and search tools for them are often not very effective; 1. Forums that are configured to send email notifications (with full text) offer the same offline capabilities as a mailing list. 2. To the casual user, forums offer VASTLY superior searching functionality compared to email archives - forums cannot be read offline And https://pidgin.im/pipermail/support/ can? Also if you are going to assume that there is one direction of progress I don't give a rodent's posterior about "directions of progress". My argument is not ideological but practical: during the short time I have been on this list, several people asked about Pidgin on mobile, others wanted support with their providers, and yet others had questions that could be easily avoided if there was a decent and friendly way to view and/or search old threads (and no, Google with site:pidgin.im does not qualify). And let's not forget about users that hit "reply" instead of "reply all", and the emails admonishing them for doing so. I am not arguing against mailing lists in general, and it may as well be the best tool for the job for the DEVELOPER list, but it does not appear to be the case for the SUPPORT list. Possibly, if the archived page contains a usable version of the add-on that works with the latest Pidgin. 2. Indicating outdated plugins that no longer work. Indicating them as what? As not working (but possibly forkable). 3. Indicating whether binary releases are available, or better yet, providing binaries for all plugins that do not have them yet (mostly for MS-Windows DLLs) Sounds good, but providing binaries may involve a lot of work on the part of the maintainers of the page. Assuming that the 3rd-party plugins can be divided into two groups, abandoned and actively maintained, I suggest the following: a. For abandoned plugins, fork them; put a copy on, say, github; build binaries for those that cannot compile from source. This would be a one-time operation for the page maintainer(s). b. For actively maintained plugins, reach out to the developers and ask them if they could compile and/or cross-compile binaries when a release is warranted, or even better, set up an automated build system (something like https://travis-ci.org), or even have the pidgin team build and host the binaries. There are many options, what is needed is the will to address the issue. 4. Indicating the date/time of the latest source and binary releases (useful for plugins that change often) Sounds good, but see http://perl.plover.com/yak/12views/samples/notes.html#sl-9 . A plugin can be considered actively maintained even after it is "finished" if the developer responds to tickets. Anyway, the problem that I am trying to address is different. I am perfectly happy with a plugin that hasn't been updated in ages but works smoothly. It's the plugins that are a "work in progress" that I am concerned about. Case in point: The Yahoo 2016 protocol plugin. When I open a ticket, I am often told that the problem was fixed in a specific commit, or asked if I use the latest DLL. Since I cannot build from source at this time, and the DLL is hosted on Eion's site without any information on when it was built or what commits got into it, I find the situation uncomfortable. I may be able to invest some time in working on that page. That would be great! On 05-09-2016 19:55, Eion Robb wrote: There's been a few attempts at a Pidgin Plugins Website over the years. Maybe a compromise can be struck, with Pidgin's group working together with plugin developers to provide a solution. Options can include hooks into the plugins' source repositories. The page can have links to the plugins' pages but have some sort of up-to-date "status" for each one (automatically updated or triggered by the plugin author actions). Also see my reply to Shlomi (above). 1. Removing the links that are no longer resolving. The ThirdPartyPlugins wiki is editable, feel free to remove or update those links Being a newcomer to the party, and not well versed in the way of the Pidgin, I'd rather not touch the wiki myself for now. 2. Are you finding some plugins that aren't? No idea what "semver" is, but when I first installed Pidgin, I went over many of the plugins on the wiki page and I remember that some (a small number) failed to work. 3. Re: Suggestion for discussion: Support for the Trillian native protocol
Pidgin is a great multi-protocol client, but unfortunately it doesn't run on Android and iOS, therefore people that want to have a mobile alternative are limited to either Trillian or IM+. IM+ is not in active development anymore and is allegedly less stable, so Trillian appears to be the client of choice (and is the one I use). Despite Trillian's multi-protocol nature, it does have a native protocol and many just use it without being aware of its multi-protocol nature and being bothered to set up other accounts. Besides, Trillian's Jabber support has a nasty habit of leaking information about your phone's ID if you don't explicitly specify the resource. Therefore, my suggestion is to implement the Trillian native protocol in Pidgin (possibly as a plugin). Re: Suggestion for discussion: buddies and protocols
Hello Robb, Allow me to amend my suggestions based on your feedback (and add some more) On 21-08-2016 19:13, Eion Robb wrote: I think generally the main concept has been that the idea of which protocol a contact is using is abstracted away, which is why by default you don't see the protocol icons - "hidden complexity" and all that. I claim that there should be a way to "unhide" that complexity for users that are interested in that information. One example can be buddies that use different services on different devices (for example, desktop vs mobile). Adding a way to show this information (perhaps in a plugin) can be beneficial. Compare it to the Windows Explorer option (unfortunately set by default) to hide file extensions. It can hide complexity for some users but it is possible to override it. [points #1, #2 and #4 in original email] This has been achieved in Pidgin by the priority of a buddy within a merged contact, based on which of their accounts is more active, the idea being that you can double-click on a contact and be speaking to the 'most available' buddy - i.e. no thought needed to work out which buddy to talk to in a contact. Unfortunately the rise of mobile protocols and protocols that claim that someone is offline when they're not has complicated issues. That said, if someone messages you, your replies will always go back on the protocol that they messaged you on last. We seem to agree that correctly determining the "most available" buddy is not always feasible, due to: a. Services that incorrectly report the user as 'available' even when they are away (in particular, web interfaces of various platforms, mobile versions, etc) b. Buddies that set their presence as 'invisible' c. Protocols that do not have presence indication (e.g., Yahoo 2016) Therefore, I claim that it is important to allow the user to set up custom weighting on a per-buddy basis. [point #3 in original email] Also, an easier way to switch protocols is to start a conversation and then use the "Send To" menu to pick the protocol that you want to use. I am aware of that option but it is hidden behind a menu. I would like to have a clear indication that a conversation is with a "multi-protocol" buddy. [point #4 in original email] You can also use Ctrl+Up on the keyboard to repeat the last message if you want to send out multiple messages on different protocols quickly. Now that I did not know. Thank you for the information. Still it is a manual operation that should be easy to automate (possibly in a plug-in). [point #5 in original email] And while we are talking of sending to multiple recipients, there is a plugin that allows to send a message to all buddies in a group, but I could not find one to send a message to several selected buddies (either in the same group or otherwise). Furthermore, it appears that pidgin does not support multi-selection at all, so no operation can be performed on an arbitrary collection of buddies. So I'd like to add another suggestion: 7) Allow multi-selection of buddies for group operations (moving, deleting, sending messages, etc) The log viewer (Conversation->View Log) at the moment already displays all of the various buddy's conversation for a merged contact in one window. That is correct. However, when I open a conversation with a user, the latest messages are displayed in the window (possibly a plugin does that), but only for that protocol. I am not sure whether they are pulled from the servers (XEP-0313 etc) or taken from the logs, but if a buddy is multi-protocol, only one set of messages (from a single protocol) is displayed. I would like to see a merged "recap". [amendment to point #6 in original email] And speaking of which, given the prevalence of people that use Pidgin on multiple computers, I would like to offer another suggestion: 8) Support merging of chat histories from different computers, using the following methods: a. Manual: exporting, importing and merging (for same-day logs) of chat history logs, and b. Automatic: intelligently merging server-side chat histories (such as XEP-0313) into local logs. Hope that helps answer your questions. Cheers, Eion I still believe that my suggestions have merit. Your further comments are appreciated. Suggestion for discussion: buddies and protocols
Hello, Pidgin is a great application but, in my humble opinion, there are several areas for improvement. Rather than just creating tickets, I wanted to run my ideas by the community and get your opinions and feedback, and since this mailing list is the closest thing to a 'community' that I could find, I will post them here. The first item I would like to discuss is the way Pidgin handles buddies on multiple protocols. In no particular order: * The way Pidgin groups buddies can be improved. Currently there is insufficient indication on the buddy list that a buddy is grouped other than hovering and expanding is clunky. My suggestions are: 1) Display /all/ the protocol icons for a grouped buddy, ordered by protocol status, greying out those on which the buddy is offline. Clicking on the icon should either display the details/status or display a protocol-specific menu. 2) Display an 'expand' control near a grouped buddy instead of having to right-click and chose 'expand'. * The selection of which protocol to use for a grouped buddy should be made more flexible. Sometimes buddies always appear offline (by choice), other times they always appear online even when away from the logged-in device. 3) Allow overriding of global protocol priorities per grouped buddy. * The *conversation* is more important than the *medium* (in this case, the protocol). Buddies sometimes use different protocols on different devices (computers vs phones for example) and in such cases conversations started on one protocol are often continued on another. The motivation for the suggestions below stems from the realization that we cannot control what protocols our buddies choose to use. 4) Display /all/ the protocol icons on the conversation window/tab, ordered by active and status (similar to #1 above). 5) Allow sending a message on all the protocols (raising the chances that the buddy will receive it faster). 6) Allow for combining the logs from different protocols for a buddy, either physically (stored in one file) or during display. Sort entries by time (UTC preferred) and optionally indicate protocol. 6a) Allow using a DB (SQLite?) rather than XML files for storing logs Your thoughts are appreciated. The 'Present' option simply requests that your WM make the window the active window. What your WM/DE does with that is entirely up to it. The 'Raise' option directly requests a change in the Z-order of the window but that will only effect a change with regard to other windows within the same class/type (or that aren't otherwise specially handled)." Using tabbed conversations on Windows (tested on XP, 7 and 8.1), the window is not brought the front nor made active. Also, the tab that received the notification does not become active. ___ Support@pidgin.im mailing list Want to unsubscribe? Use this link: https://pidgin.im/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/support
