Recently somone told us that the SM option leave messages on the

This is partially true.
- My SM option is: leaves messages on the server.
- My Gmail option is: Keep Gmail's copy in the inbox

Actually, it's not quite that. Seamonkey implements correctly, AFAIK,
the leave messages on server option of the POP3 protocol. Gmail,
however, ignores what you tell it to do, and instead relies mostly on
its internal setting. So, the important point is to set Gmail
correctly, because its internal option will override the Seamonkey
option.
Gmail IS set correctly. the problem is that when donwloading messages
from SM and not telling Gmail to delete the downloaded messages - But
Gmail simply delete pop3 messages !!!

Usually i use PopTray to look at the list of the mails present on the
server.
It look like GMail have TWO mailbox one is the webmail-mailbox and the
second on is the pop3-mailbox.
I say that because:
1. I use PopTray to lookat the pop3 list and a see a few mails.
2. Then i donwload it using SM (with the preference leaves messages on
the server)
3. When all mails are in the SM-mailbox on my pc, il look at the
pop3list using PopTray.
4. The list is EMPTY. (so it looks - all mails are gone)
5. Then i look at the gmail mailbox using their webmail interface - All
the mails listed at point 1 are there and i can read them.

This is certainly not an SM problem, but an Gmail one. I wrote this post
to explain what i have found -
2 differents mailbox for a gmail account.

Not quite, from what I understand it's not two different mailboxes.
But Gmail keeps a record pointed to the earliest message it will make
available through POP3. If I remember well, in fact, when you first
activate POP3, it gives you the choice of setting the pointer to zero
(that is, the POP mail client will see all messages) or to now (that
is, the POP mail client will only see messages arriving from now on).

When a POP client like Seamonkey sends Gmail a command to delete
messages, but Gmail is set up to keep all messages regardless (the
default setting, by the way), it will only *move* the pointer, so only
new messages will be shown to the POP client. In fact, it *fakes*
deleting the messages.

My seamonkey option did not send a command to delete messages to Gmail !!!

That somewhat confusing behavior is one of the reasons I prefer using
IMAP with Gmail. That, and the fact that IMAP allows me to check the
Spam folder easily for false positives.

The truth is, differently from most other mail systems, Gmail was
conceived to be used primarily from its own web UI, which uses
different metaphors than other systems, with other means of access
(like POP and IMAP) being sort of afterthoughts.
The implementation of POP and IMAP was done with more regard to not
interfering with the main UI system than to following the specs to the
letter.

They did in fact do a fairly good job on the specs, but the way Gmail
features map to POP and IMAP may be sometimes a bit odd. In my
opinion, Gmail just maps better to IMAP than to POP.

It's a SM extension that maintains bookmarks. It compacts the bookmarks database

 Thanks,

This is NOT a problem. It appears to be intentional design.

There is a way to make SeaMonkey choose Windows' default printer every
time SeaMonkey is launched after having been terminated. Locate the
profile directory. In that directory, use an ASCII editor (e.g.,
WordPad, Notepad) to edit or create the file user.js. Insert the
following three lines:
user_pref(print_printer, );
// default back to Windows default printer if another
// printer was selected (e.g., Acrobat Distiller)
Be sure to include the semi-colon (;) at the end of the first line. The
second and third lines are actually comments merely intended to remind
you why you did this.

This will NOT work if you set print_printer to a blank value in
about:config or prefs.js; you should not even attempt to edit the
latter. The reason this will not work with about:config is that, every
time you select an alternative printer, prefs.js gets changed to point
to that alternative; about:config is merely a display of prefs.js.

Since user.js overrides prefs.js only when SeaMonkey is launched, any
selection of an alternative printer will remain in effect until
SeaMonkey is terminated.

Not automatically, no. Mr. Halford has quit development and removed
CheckPlaces from his site almost six months ago, at least two Mozilla
releases ago, and it still works.

But at some time in the future updates to the engine and API may render
the current version of CheckPlaces incompatible with Firefox/Seamonkey.

However, CheckPlaces is GPL'd and it even has the source code hosted on

problem been addressed/fixed in SeaMonkey version 2.14.1 and I am just
not finding it? If it has been fixed or there is a work around I would
be interested in hearing it.

Thanks,
John

This is NOT a problem. It appears to be intentional design.

There is a way to make SeaMonkey choose Windows' default printer every
time SeaMonkey is launched after having been terminated. Locate the
profile directory. In that directory, use an ASCII editor (e.g.,
WordPad, Notepad) to edit or create the file user.js. Insert the
following three lines:
user_pref(print_printer, );

OK, here's something that does work, though I'm not sure of any
unintended consequences:

In about:config, find the pref print_printer, right-click it, and choose
reset. It becomes blank. Close about:config.

Henceforth, whenever you execute a print command, the default printer is
selected. You can select another printer, but the next time you execute
a print command, the default is selected again. Just what the OP wanted.

Any reason not to do this?

I'd also like to know how to restore the default behavior.

The program fetches an XML file using a URL that is configured in

That parameter in my SM 2.14.1 has the value:

 app.update.url;https://aus2-community.mozilla.org/update/3/%PRODUCT%/%VERSION%/%BUILD_ID%/%BUILD_TARGET%/%LOCALE%/%CHANNEL%/%OS_VERSION%/%DISTRIBUTION%/%DISTRIBUTION_VERSION%/update.xml

I presume SM substitutes values for all the text between per-cent signs.

How do I figure out what all those values are?

If you want to know what to substitute them as, you can set
app.update.log;true and then you'll see all the details in your error
console when you attempt an update.

The reason for those substitutions is so that we can give you the proper
update, including a smaller update for some builds/versions, etc.

Going to about:config, I reset print_printer. I then went to a Web
page, selected print, and selected a non-default printer (printing to a
PDF file). I then went to print a different Web page, but the
previously selected non-default printer was still selected. Thus, what
you suggested does not work. What I wrote previously regarding
about:config is true.

I disabled the setting of print_printer in my user.js file, terminated
SeaMonkey, and then relaunched SeaMonkey. The previously selected
non-default printer was still selected.

I re-enabled the setting of print_printer in my user.js file, terminated
SeaMonkey, and then relaunched SeaMonkey. My Windows default printer
was selected. This proves my method works.
