I am not saying you shouldn't change it if you want to. I have prefs bar
and I change it myself sometimes. I can't remember why.

I am just saying that the point of the User Agent String is to identify
the user agent. So the default setting should be Seamonkey, because
that's what it is. If the web authors can't be bothered to check it
properly it is their fault, not the fault of the browser.

I disagree with that, because it would not be correctly identifying the

I reported it to google via their feedback some time ago. Maybe one day
they will fix it. When they are not too busy pretending electric

Yes, outgoing mail messages, via an smtp server, incoming ones via pop
or imap.

I am not sure about that. Mail servers handle mail, news servers handle
news.

I have never known a news server handle mail. Maybe it can. But the
ports would be different, and the protocol. So you would have to set it
up twice in SM I think, once as a mail server and once as a news server.

You can reply all and produce one nntp article, via the configured news
server, and only one email, via the smtp server. You can use the default
smtp server which you use for all your email. Or you can use a different
one, if you have access to it. smtp servers tend to require an account,
or limit access in some way to avoid being used as spam relays.

No. The outgoing smtp server is for mail, news articles go via the news
server. The smtp server is optional. It's only used if you want to reply
both to the group and by email.

That seems odd. In the account settings for this news server, there is
an option to set an outgoing smtp server. And if I right click on a news
article, there is an option to reply to sender AND to newsgroup. So I
think it should work. But it didn't when I tested it.

I didn't mention it before, but I also saw that error message "Video
loading stopped...".

Later I tried creating a new profile and with that the video seemed to
work without problems.

Disabling all my addons with the default (suspect) profile made no
difference. I expect it is down to some setting, but finding which one

In my Blogs and News Feeds folder I have an unread folder, which is a
search folder which I created by searching for all the articles in Blogs
and News Feeds which are unread. So this folder, like all my other
folders, has the Order Received column on the right hand side, but
unlike all my other folders it has a Location column to the right of
it. This Location column might be unique to search folders. Anyway the
situation right now is that I can move the left hand side of the Order
Received column, but this does not change the width of the column, it
just moves the column. I cannot move the right hand side of the
column. Hovering over it with the mouse does not produce the <-> mouse
cursor.

So (experimenting) I move to a different folder... Nope, I still can't
change it, but, what I did next is move the Order Received column to the
left so that Priority Location Date and Status are to its right. Having
done that I can change the width of the Order Received column. Strangely
though I can now change the width of the Priority column which is in the
place that Order Received used to be.

What you are describing isn't quite what I am seeing. It needs to be the
second column from the right. If it is the rightmost column then moving
it will change its width by default I expect, as the right of the pane
cannot move.

So further experimenting, the Location field is not available in any
except the Unread search folder. If Order Received is the last but one
column in this folder, then its width cannot be changed.

Fascinating. :)

Maybe it only occurs on the search folder I have set up for unread
articles. I have noticed also on this search folder that messages with
the same order received appear twice. But if I navigate away to a
different folder and back again, the duplicates are gone.

*(By "Anything else" I meant any other folder. I was able to change the

I get some problems when I log into Netflix. I am not sure if it is a
memory leak. But my system has only 1G of RAM, and when I log into
Netflix, it goes swaptastic. The same problem was occurring with Firefox
but then it went away with a newer release, so I was hoping the same
thing would happen with SeaMonkey eventually.

Opensuse 42.2

Seamonkey 2.49a2 and 2.50a2, compiled by me. (Maybe earlier ones, I
can't remember).

That's not what the article says. It is talking about pop3 import, i.e.
getting mail from other email accounts into Yahoo.

I think if Yahoo stopped pop3 support it would be big news, because many
are trying to get away from it by pulling mail into another provider
like gmail.

You could use Aurora:

I used to use nosquint. Then I switched to theme and font size changer.
Now I just get by setting the minimum zoom level. It's not perfect but
it's good enough.

You could also experiment with setting a minimum font size, but that can
mess up some sites.

Edit -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Content -> Zoom options -> Range

Or about:config zoom.minPercent;170

Yes I tried 2.40 on linux. I am not sure this is a bug. It maybe an
improvement that was made to the TB user interface but never applied to
SM. I should think it would be more complicated for the code to go
through a list of folders and then for each folder through a list of
articles than just to go through a list of articles.

The saved search that I have created though is dynamically updated so it
is now easy to repeat the mark-all-read on it.

If firefox goes off to get the cisco H.264 plugin at run time, then it

There is text, and it can be seen without javascript, by pressing

using wget, and then running the page through html2text, or by using

If you get the page with wget and then run it through html2text you get

Ah, I forgot about the Adblock Plus. But when I disable that, and still
with javascript disabled, now I get a blank page with a circle.

I am not trying to bypass the adverts, or the ablock blocker, I am
trying to disable all the nonsense on forbes (they did at one time serve
up malware from their swamp of javascript). So I am thinking if w3m can
display text, why not SM? I don't think w3m or lynx run javascript.

I think this is some kind of memory leak. It uses up a huge amount of
memory to display the login page. And on this computer it ran out of
memory, whereas on another there was no obviously problem, until using
the 'free' command to observe how much memory is being used.

Chromium displayed the page without problems on this computer so I have
raised it on bugzilla, where it will probably collect dust, or maybe a

OK, I tried shift compose and it is indeed wrapping as I type. What I
was doing before was pressing compose, and then selecting option -
format - plain text. I thought that amounted to the same thing. The
formatting toolbar disappears. But apparently it is not the same thing.

Since posting that article, I found that if an email is saved as draft,
it is saved in HTML format, even if it is a plain text message. So I
guess it is converted from HTML to text as it is sent.

This may also be dependent on me using IMAP.

For the time being I am going to use gnus for posting to mailing lists.

I am not sure if this is a bug, or intended behaviour. I just tried

You could make sure that you have blocked unrequested pop-up windows. Go

Then install an ad blocker like adblock plus, or ublock origin. Go to

The problem seems to be that when I am typing a news article the text
wraps as I type, but when I am typing an email message the text does not
wrap, at least not until I get to the right hand side of the Window,
which is quite a long way on this screen. This is true regardless of
whether it is html or plain text.

Anyway I sent myself an email and it seems to arrive wrapped, but I
cannot tell where the wrapping occured, i.e. did it occur in the viewer,
or before it was sent?

I posted to a mailing list and someone complained that I should wrap my
text as a courtesy. But I cannot tell if it is going to be wrapped or
not at the point I press send.

I didn't mean that I wanted to check that it tested for lack of SSE2 and
then refused to proceed. (I think Edmund said he has not put such checks
in yet) I wanted to check those parts of seamonkey which require SSE2
and see if they are still working. Someone mentioned that there is
assembler in the code, so I would expect that to fail.

But if the problem is only because Microsoft's Visual Studio is
producing SSE2 instructions, then that's not going to make any
difference to me on linux.

I see a bug here which might be the same thing, so maybe this will go
away in later versions.

I forgot to mention that. It's 2.49a2. But I do not see any errors.

You are right, there is no need to restart, only close the find bar. I
see no errors on closing either. Perhaps it is just that it does not get
focus. If I click in the box after ctrl-f then it works as normal.

A bug with Find-in-Page?

2016-12-29 Thread Richmond
I am not sure if this is a bug, here is how to create it:

Quit Seamonkey if it is running.
Launch Seamonkey
Go to a web page, e.g. http://www.seamonkey-project.org/start/
Type ctrl-f to make the "find in page" box appear.
Then start typing seamonkey.

I would expect the letters to appear in the "find in page" box toward
the top left. But the letters don't appear, although the incremental
"find as you type" is working. However, typing ctrl-f again fixes it,
and I think it remains fixed until Seamonkey quits again.

If you open a terminal command line and type:

type seamonkey

It will tell you where it is going to pick up the executable from. It
will be somewhere in your path. And it should be from where you were
expecting.

What I did (on opensuse) was uninstall the distribution's seamonkey, and
then switched to root and unpacked the tar into /usr/local/. This should
give you the executable as /usr/local/seamonkey/seamonkey. Then create a
simlink from /usr/local/bin/seamonkey to /usr/local/seamonkey/seamonkey:

ln -s /usr/local/seamonkey/seamonkey /usr/local/bin/seamonkey

Then check that /usr/local/bin is in your path with

env|grep PATH

Check the version with:

seamonkey --version

New Javascript Free Tab?

2016-12-26 Thread Richmond
I had an idea for a useful addition to seamonkey. An option to create a
new javascript free tab. This would mean the javascript on/off flag
would need to be per tab.

I am aware of noscript, but it doesn't work the same way. Some tasks,
like reading the news, don't need javascript and are better without it,
whereas others, like internet shopping, will fail without it. So
javascript should be organised by task, not by site, as google-whatsit
is pervasive on all sites for any task.

This would make seamonkey better than all the other browsers, and set
for world dominatin. ;)

It is working ok for me on linux 2.49. But I read that the data manager
on 2.40 was half broken. So maybe you have some corrupted data in there?
You could try creating a new profile to see how well it works with that.

Yesterday I was using it to move hugh amounts of email around. It was
doing ok. It is ok for just reading things on the internet but it helps
to have javascript disabled. There is no point in trying to watch video.

Thunderbird fell over with a segmentation fault.

I see here:

Does this mean that I could compile seamonkey on my AMD Athlon XP

I used "user agent switcher" as described by FRG in the bugzilla. Search
for that in addons. But you have to then download and import a list of
agents to get Firefox 49. Otherwise it's just i.e. and a few obscure
ones.

I can make it work in the way described by Ralph's first work-around.

Disabling Javascript seems to make the problem go away by placing the
search options in a menu on the left. Disabling javascript completely is
impractical but using noscript to disable it just for google might be a
solution.

My Seamonkey 2.49a2 identifies itself as Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64;
rv:52.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/52.0 SeaMonkey/2.49a2. So I thught maybe
this is a bug which hasn't yet reached my firefox which is still on 51 I
think. But that doesn't fit with the problem being in Seamonkey 2.40.

I suppose the thing to do is to see if it has been recorded on bugzilla
and if not then raise it on there, and then it will be rejected if it is
down to google and not to a fault in the browser.

I might do that shortly.
