I'm almost happy at the moment...I can receive my email messages on
SeaMonkey.  I still don't know what made this happen...unless it was a
mistake I made while looking at "Preferences" in SeaMonkey.  I found
under "Preferences" three squares...one with Mail, another with News,
and the third with Feed printed on them.  Two of these boxes (Mail and
Feeds) were grayed out and only News had a white background.  I said
to myself...voila, I need to find a way to make Mail have a
background. I never found a way to make the Mail block turn white, so
I started down a very dangerous path of experimenting.  I decided to
click the News block and then I got a message asking if I was sure I
wanted to take this action...after some hard thinking, I decided to
say yes.  I was then shaking like a leaf in the wind but ultimately
decided to attempt to download my (AOL) mail on SeaMonkey...would you
believe my messages started to download immediately after clicking the
download button.

I next decided to check my newsgroup messages...they were there and
new messages were downloaded.  One problem here that was not present
in my mail arena is the fact that I still can't open my news group
messages...I only see message headings and can't open the messages to
see the message text.  Without seeing the message text I don't know
what the message is all about and I need the message to be open in
order to send a response to that message.  I will continue to look for
a fix for this problem.  (((Question: Is it better for me to open a

Needless to say I am a happy person right now, and I can send/receive
email messages via SeaMonkey...able to receive newsgroup traffic on
SeaMonkey but not able to open the message or respond to the message
on SeaMonkey...and I can continue to visit web pages on SeaMonkey. All
of this would not have been possible without the help all of you sent
my way...you are all to be commended for what you do to help other

Frog

Frog, I don't know if my contribution will fix your situation ... but
you never know

At one stage, SeaMonkey was set up so that, once you had set up an
e-mail account, SeaMonkey would reason that any other account you set up
would HAVE TO BE a News account, so removed the possibility of setting
up another e-mail account, hence your not being able to, i.e. E-mail
account being greyed out!! (I don't know why you saw 'Feed' greyed out!!)

What you just stated makes sense to me in light of what I have
encountered during this thread and what I have to look forward to in the
coming days. Recapping a little here, I have two accounts (one titled
username@verizon and another AOL Account). I believe the one titled
usern...@verizzon.net is the one I am actually using to access my AOL
mail on SeaMonkey. The second one I think is a dud and probably should
be deleted...now I have to make sure of which one I am actually using
before deleting anything.

I can now see the subject line and message text of my AOL email messages
on SeaMonkey. I can also access - see the subject lines of the messages
of this newsgroup on SeMonkey. I cannot, however, open or respond to a
newsgroup message on SeaMunkey. My attempts to open a message results
in me seeing this message:

This link needs to be opened with an application.
Send to:
 Pick an app
Choose other Application Choose...

___Remember my choice for news links.

 CancelOpen link

I have never been able to identify an application that will open the
messages on this newsgroup using SeaMonkey. My work around for this lack
of access to newsgroup messages is to open Thunderbird and all of my
messages become readable.

To change this situation, i.e. to allow you to set up a new E-mail
account, you need to get into your set-up and make a change

FYI, I am afraid to start deleting an account because I am informed that
doing so will delete all of my historical messages.

Hmm! I must be getting old!! I used to be able to give instructions for
reverting to being able to set up Mail account but, alas, now I
cannot recall the preference that needs to be reset ... or, do I, sort
of, recall someone here suggesting this functionality might have been
removed??

It maybe now, that you have set your account up as a News account, your
SeaMonkey has gone and gotten your mail off of the Server, BUT is then
trying to operate as a News reader such that when you click on a
Subject:, your SeaMonkey is trying to re-read the message from the
Server but the message has already been downloaded onto your
Computer, so is not on the Server for it to read.

smtp.verizon.net is the server name for sending mail.

pop.verizon.net is the server for receiving mail.

I just setup my Verizon account in SeaMonkey 2.52.2.

Once I entered the email address, server name (pop.verizon.net) and port
number (995) I had to open the accounts settings and change the accounts
security settings.

Connection security: SSL/TLS
Authentication method: Normal password.

Then I attempted to get messages, was asked for my password, entered it
into the dialog window, clicked "Next" and received my emails.

Hope that helps.

I also retained my u...@verizon.net address.

All was working without any problems on my computer (SeaMonkey software)
until very recently. I'm not sure if my computer was the cause of my
problems or whether Verizon or AOL had a hand in causing my
problems...whatever the cause, I now have a work around that involves
three software packages (Thunderbird, AOL, and SeaMonkey) to do what I
was doing on SeaMonkey alone. Any settings in your account or profile
(that you are willing to share with me) may help me to return to some
sanity on my computer. No, I am not seeking any personal information,
such as usernames or passwords, in my seeking help.

Please note that I had a 6.5 hour virus/malware scan of my computer and
no problems were found. I then got in touch with my virus scan people
for help and they had me send the results of my scan to them for further
review...the review did not turn up any problems. Thus, I don't think
the problem that put me in this mess was my computer...I believe it had
something to do with either Verizon or AOL.

It was good to hear from you and thanks for letting me know that I was
not alone when I made the decision to keep my Verizon email address.

you will be deleting all the e-mails you have sent and received on
those two accounts!

Least that's what happened to me! ;-(

I haven't been following this thread closely, but at this point, a
couple of thoughts...

Something that Frog might want to do is consider doing some playing in a
different user profile, rather than his current profile.  That way,
there's more capacity to experiment, without risking damage to existing
setups or data.

One way to do that would be to create a new profile in Seamonkey, and
try setting up a new connection there. The idea is to figure out the
mechanics of what works or not, where you're not trying to work around
your existing data.  Once you get that working, you can replicate those
settings in your normal profile.

Going a step further, consider the possibility of a temporary install of
Thunderbird -- its account setup wizard works pretty well (more
extensive than Seamonkey), and I've found that for most providers, all
it takes to get a workable connection is specifying your email address,
password and whether you want POP or IMAP, and the wizard is pretty good
about figuring out the rest of the settings. There are exceptions,
especially if a provider requires a different password for external
clients, as a way of doing a form of multi-factor authentication, but
absent that, the setup wizard should be able to do most of the work in
figuring things out. As with the suggestion above, once you have a
working connection, you can tweak your configs in Seamonkey to match.

However, it is possible that Verizon/AOL is doing something like
alternate password, and if so, the only source of information of how to
do your configs will be information that you get directly from them.  My
own mail provider does this, and when I was setting up my phone to be
able to check my mail, I found that they required me to do a one-time
configuration of a separate password that's used in a mail client
(although somehow, they seem to have grandfathered my long-time
connection in Seamonkey, where I've never had to adjust that.)

Item of caution: if you're working with a POP connections on a test
setup, before you commit to downloading mail from a server, I do
encourage you to check the advanced settings, to adjust the mail
retention preferences.  In Seamonkey, the default setting is to delete
mail from the server after it's downloaded, and if you're using a test
configuration, it's a good idea to set it to not delete from the server,
so that the test connection isn't grabbing mail that you want to go into
your normal mail.

Another consideration: if you're changing server names, it's generally
better to create a new account anyway, and not try to tinker with the
name in an existing account.  I have done that in the past, even in
changing providers, but the result is that you get a lot of messiness at
folder and file level within your user profile, and it's worse when you
have multiple accounts.  Some of the naming includes server names when
created, and if you're digging at that level, it can be really confusing
to be seeing old names that don't correspond with current usage.  With
this in mind, having a new account in place is probably a good idea.

As for making sure that you don't lose any of your mail archives, I
recommend either (or both) of the following:

1) Before you do any additional tinkering, make sure you get a backup of
your existing profile.  In Windows, you want to get the entire contents
of %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Seamonkey .  The AppData folder is normally hidden,
where you can't find it in the Windows explorer, but if you put that
path (with the environment variable) in the Explorer's address bar, it's
no problem to find.  And depending on what backup tool you use, some
allow you to use that construct in what you're including in your
backups.  For me, if I'm doing a data backup, besides all the normal
libraries in Windows, I include that designation, so that I get all my
Seamonkey data, and I do the same with my data for Firefox and
Thunderbird (%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox and %APPDATA%\Thunderbird,
respectively -- Thunderbird's designation is slightly different, for
some reason).

Even if you don't do this for your regular backups, getting a copy of
your Seamonkey data *somewhere* is a really good idea, even if you
simply copy %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Seamonkey to your Documents library.

2) If you anticipate the possibility of deleting your existing POP
account, copy all you mail data into Local Folders, where it can stay,

[excertptquote] Update server settings

Most email software and applications have an account settings menu where
you'll need to update the IMAP or POP3 settings.

When entering your account info, make sure you use your full email
address, including @verizon.net, and that the SSL encryption is enabled
for incoming and outgoing mail.

ProtocolServer Settings Port Settings
POP 3

Incoming mail server (POP3): pop.verizon.netPOP3-995-SSL
Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.verizon.net SMTP-465-SSL

IMAP

Incoming mail server (IMAP): imap.aol.com IMAP-993-SSL
Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.verizon.net SMTP-465-SSL
[/endqoute]

REF:

Pick one and fix your settings.

Other options are to use Web mail from or use the
account wizard in Thunderbird to setup the POP Verizon account.

Just enter your name, email address and password, then click the
"Continue" button, when it finds the server settings click "Done".

Then use those settings to configure your SeaMonkey mail.

Re: How to access my AOL mail account using SeaMonkey.

2020-05-01 Thread Frog
Thank you for helping me with fixing a part of my world I know very
little about...computers.

I made the changes you recommended and I am not able to access my AOL
mail from SeaMonkey. I attempted to download my email messages from AOL
after the changes were made and this is the error message I received:

Error with account f...@verizon.net

address is correct in your account settings and try again.

I have two accounts in SeaMonkey...one account is for my newsgroups and
browsing the internet. The second (titled AOL) account is used for
downloading email messages from AOL to SeaMonkey. I believe a select
look at the two accounts tells me that something is wrong between the
two accounts. Thus, I am sending select account settings for both
accounts for your review.

You have a usern...@aol.com email account or are trying to use your
usern...@verizon.net email address with AOL mail?

I can agree that I have an email address at AOL and it is
usern...@verison.net.  I agreed/selected some two years ago to retain
my original Verizon email address over a new AOL email address.  I
made this selection because I thought it would save me a lot of time
informing people about a new email address.  Also, I was uneasy about
my technical skill that I thought would be needed to change "things"
in my computer to make a new address work.  I'm not sure, in light of
my situation today, that I made a wise choice to continue to use my
Verizon address.  Bottom line..I have never had a usern...@aol.com
email address.

That won't work.

I'm not sure I understand what won't work.  I continue to use my
original usern...@verizon.net address when I send/retrieve my email
from AOL...and it continues to work in the AOL's mail system.

What won't work is trying to use the Verizon address with an
imap.aol.com or pop.aol.com server name in your configuration.

It should be.

Server Name: pop.verizon.net.
Port: 995
Connection Security: SSL/TLS
Authentication Method: Normal password

The outgoing SMTP server settings are:
Server Name: smtp.verizon.net
Port:465
Connection Security: SSL/TLS
Authentication Method: Normal password

That's what my settings are.

You probably have to resolve that Known Issue before you can create an
email account.

WOW!!!  I entered the settings as you suggested and I can again
access this help page on SeaMonkey.  I, however, cannot see the text of
the messages...all I see is the following when attempting to open a
message:

Launch Application    X
This link needs to be opened with an application.
Send to:
 Pick an app
Choose other Application Choose...

___Remember my choice for news links.

     Cancel    Open link

Thus, I had to return to Thunderbird to make this message available for
reading the text of your message and being able to respond to your
message.  When I click "Choose" on this small window I am taken to
another window titled "Another Application."  When I click "Open link",
it takes me to a blank page with the same message documented above.

What is causing my messages open normally in SeaMonkey?

Thanks again for getting me this far in solving my SeaMonkey problems.

Frog

Your confused? That makes two of use. ;)

So creating the email account worked, you can receive and send email,
but can't read newsgroup messages in your newsgroup account?

I vaguely remember seeing that message when trying to read newsgroup
messages. Forget which version and I'm not sure what I did to fix it.

Here is a link to my settings.

If you want SeaMonkey to be the default for Mail, News and Feeds select
each button. I only have News selected and that may be what fixed it for me.

Good luck!

They aren't using an AOL email address so that isn't relevant unless
they decide to create one.

They have a Verizon email address. AOL now hosts Verizon mail since
Verizon owns AOL and moved their email accounts there.

Have you read the SeaMonkey Known Issues and attmpted this fix.

After creating a news account through clicking a news URL, the MailNews
account wizard may be broken (the account type will always be News). To
work around the problem, set the mail.server.serverX.valid pref (where X
is the internal number of the corresponding news account) to true in
about:config, or delete the invalid news account (bug 521861).

No, I have not read the SeaMonkey Known Issues and attempted a fix. I
will do a search for SeaMonkey bug fixes and see if I can locate bug fix
521861. Hopefully I will find this item and that it communicates a fix I
can understand. As i stated in my response to Paul in Houston...I am
and user of a computer and have very limited technical computer skills.

Why can't you use SeaMonkey for newsgroups?

Simply put, I have attempted to access this mailgroup repeatedly and all
I get is a long period of a blank screen followed by a timed out
message. I can't download newsgroup messages, respond or create
messages when using SeaMonkey...it's as if it is dead.

I finally gave up on trying to find a fix for my problems and then set
up Thunderbird in an attempt to find guidance on how to make every thing
work once more.

I appreciate your help and I do apologize to you and all of the other
responders for my lack of responsiveness during my earlier cry for help
on this newsgroup. I was lost as to how to make my newsgroups work on
SeaMonkey...thus, I was fighting to keep my head above water at that
time. I am not much better of now than I was at that time...but I am
now able to access this newsgroup via Thunderbird.

Lets fix the NG access first because its easiest to fix.
You last accessed this NG with SM on Apr 17.
What have you changed since then to not able to access this group?

Paul, thanks for your response to my message.

The problem started when suddenly I decided to visit this support group.
I attempted to open this group and repeatedly received a small message
to the effect that my request had timed out. Then, I noticed that I
would receive this message without my checking my mail...it would pop up
on the screen without any action being taken. I assumed that it was
making normal checks for support group messages. Long story short, I
found that my actions taken to move from Verizon to AOL must have not
been correct...thus, I downloaded Thunderbird and Firefox and started
using it for accessing this support group. I personally believe that
Verizon suddenly did something that caused me to lose access to
everything except visiting web pages. This caused me to start using AOL
software (which I did install some two years ago when Verizon bought
AOL). I did not like the AOL mail system as much as I liked having my
mail on SeaMonkey (which continued to work until (I believe) Verizon
suddenly cut my access to everything except visiting web pages. That
forced me to use AOL for my mail.

That (I believe) was the cause of my many problems with SeaMonkey. I
had earlier tried to establish an AOL account on SeaMonkey. I got on
the internet looking for help...port numbers, server name, POP or IMAP,
and on to many other things I needed to know in order to make an attempt
to have an AOL account on SeaMonkey. I then decided to make an AOL
account on SeaMonkey. Well, another long story, I made several attempts
to make a workable account on SeaMonkey and was unsuccessful in all of
my efforts.

I thought one of my major problems with the new account was my email
address...I made a decision, when AOL came about, to continue to use my
original Verizon email address in AOL. This fact caused me many periods
of thought as to what should be in the account in order to make it
work...and nothing I did was a success.

I noted during this problem that my old Verizon account was my Default
account on SeaMonkey. I then decided to make AOL the default SeaMonkey
account. This act resulted in my losing all of my saved Verizon emails.
This action also had an effect on my AOL account...I lost all of my
AOL saved messages and was no longer able to access my AOL mail. At
this point, I once again reverted back to having my old Verizon account
as my Default account...with the result of being able to access my AOL
mail normally. I had a thought that my phone line is Verizon and
somehow that was a part of my problem...but later I decided that a phone
line is a phone line, and that wasn't a part of my problem.

I have read and printed items found on the internet that I thought would
make my efforts a success. I was at this point that I realized that
this old man (83) needed help with this problem. As noted in my
messages to the support group, I am looking for simple-to-follow
instructions as to how to achieve my goal.

At the moment, I have SeaMonkey on my system and it is only able to
perform as a browser of web pages. I have Firefox and Thunderbird on my
system that allows me to send this message and it performs as a browser.
I have AOL on my system and it allows me to access my mail (and likely
a number of other things that I haven't had time to explore). I have
used SeaMonkey for years and Netscape before that (back to 95). I feel
like I am at home when using SeaMonkey and that is why I wanted to use
it for all of my internet activities...user group, mail, and browser.

Bottom line, I continue to receive time-out messages on SeaMonkey while
attempting to visit this support group and when attempting take an
action involving my normal mail...visiting web pages is the only
SeaMonkey action that I can take without being confronted with the
time-out message,.

Well Paul, that is the best description I can give you for

Would it be easier for me to abandon SeaMonkey and and move to have my

You have a usern...@aol.com email account or are trying to use your
usern...@verizon.net email address with AOL mail?

That won't work.

Why can't you use SeaMonkey for newsgroups?
