Nope. When you get that message, it's pretty much always because
SM is
compacting the folder.

...I thought I had control over that?

GW

I did manage to find it - you can set the Pref to Compact when it will
save a given amount of disk space. I must have hit it just right, I may
adjust my setting.

choose an odd number.
That fixed my hang-up / stall on automatic message checking back around
2005. Mozilla didn't like 2,4,6,8 or 10 so I put 9. Fixed it! (strange
but true)

GW

It's interesting that the problem now seems to be just with this one
Folder...I've just had it happen again, and had to close and re-open SM
after attempting to drag a post into it.

And even more interesting is that upon restart of SM I can see that the
task of dragging the post into the Folder was completed even though Mail
was still hung/in wait after the drag and wouldn't wake up.

There are 1459 items in this Folder...I have another one that is bigger,
and after trying to drag something into it, this happens with that one
as well - now I've got the blue-ball again...

...after I re-launch, I'll try it with a smaller one and see what
happens. Pretty sure now it's not connected to Folders being Compacted.

No clues what's going on here...dragging a post to a Folder is hanging
up that Folder until I restart SM - no matter what the size of the Folder.

I use drag and drop for about everything I can - I've been dragging NG
posts to Folders far longer than I've been dragging and dropping URLs
into the Bookmarks Sidebar to save them.

But I do like your approach for dealing with multiple machines! I do
that by noting what is Unread on the next machine and also dragging those.

I always took it to mean that if SM itself stopped to think, I get the
SM working/thinking symboland if it stops too long, I get the OS
thinking/working symbol. (aka pinwheel of deathfrom years back on
Mac groups). It's usually when I click to delete a god-awful huge HTML

SM has always taken a long time to delete large HTML heavy messages, IDK
why, and I have no basis for comparison. Anyone with ten times the RAM

So far I've only noticed it hanging on dragging a NG post to a
Folder...and it never recovers, but I can continue to use the Browser
and click around Mail - that's the really odd thing. Closing Mail
doesn't clear it either - I have to close the session and re-open SM.

I don't really do/see HTML Mail, so I've got nothing to compare to on
that score...but I do subscribe to a binary group of 3D artists, so I'll
have to look at what happens when I try and display a particularly large
post - those are generally what I File and I haven't had any trouble
with those...just ones from my Crohn's NG which are all text, some
converted from HTML probably - so maybe it's something with that group
that is the problem?

I'm still dubious about the blue wheel...I need to check that on my
1.1.19 install and see what I see.

It's not the OS X beachball of death, which represents an entirely
different problem. And, frankly, this busy cursor does not indicate any
problem whatsoever. It's just saying, hey, I'm busy doing stuff. The old
black-and-white cursor was so unobtrusive that I can easily imagine most
users not seeing it at all. The new one is seriously in your face.
