Re: is spybot accessible

2016-09-01 Thread David via Talk
Spybot Search & Destroy, is an Anti-Spyware program. It will take care
of an extensive list of known malwares, search for them, and destroy or
delete them.

Besides having a system scanning function, it also have the capability
of "watching" your system activity. For instance, when surfing the net,
it may block certain malicious activity.

One interesting detail of it, is that it has an Imunizer - that is, it
will prevent your system from future attacks, even if they are not yet
at your machine. At least, that is what they attempt to do.

It does come in both a free version, and a paid for flavor. Main
difference, from what I can make out, is that the paid for version will
automatically update its databases, whereas the free version requires
you to do so once a week or so. Further, it seems the paid for version
will have some extra watchdogs hanging around your system, just to make
sure even less intruders will have their chance.

Yesterday morning, I did find my system acting up on me. For one thing,
the fan kept spinning more than usual, and Thunderbird and WE did not go
hand in hand as they should. Well, and just in general, I found it was
time for a system cleanup. I ran Spybot, it found some 20 issues, which
I asked it to automatically do with, as it desired. And now, my system
is back to good performance, and I can write and edit my emails as usual
again. Apparently, some strange stuff had sneaked in here. Not saying
this is the ONE AND ONLY software to go for. I regularly run a handful
security packages here. But at least it is worth a try with the Spybot
cleaner. A few days ago, I ran Malwarebytes, and although it took care
of some of the issues on the machine, it obviously did not do all of
them. This not to hold one against the other, but just to underline the
importance of scrubbing your PC with different tools and detergents
every now and then.

Spybot has their own homepage, which you could search on the net, to get
the more full picture of their software and services.

Re: is spybot accessible

2016-09-01 Thread David via Talk
Basically, I just let it take care of all found issues, and generally
that does the job. But when you have performed a scan, there is a list
of found issues, with checkboxes. I guess, unchecking some of them, will
make the program skip these issues, but as I stated, I don't really
bother much about the list. Sometimes I do scroll through it, just to
make sure what it actually found, only then to ask it select all the
issues, and get the job done.

Sorry if this is a bit off-side from your query, but that is how it has
worked for me for a long time. Since my system is newly scanned, I don't
have a chance of checking how accessible the checkboxes in the list are
- i.e if you can hear when a box is checked or unchecked. Again, sorry
for not being of more help on this one.

only thing I have a problem with is when AVG pops up with an advertisement
for their PC Fix, but that's not very often. Sometimes when I hit enter on
the AVG Icon, I have to alt tab to get window eyes focused on the AVG
window. If you hit enter without knowing where you are there's no telling
what your hitting enter on. LOL HTH.

Subject: AVG

After reading comments from listers, I thought that AVG would be accessible
with Window-Eyes 9.5 and Windows 7 64-Bit Pro. I think not so fast. My
problems began as I found that the installation screen did not read
properly. Then, when I got into the Zen afgter I finally got it installed, I
found that screen didn’t read either. I tabbed and pressed enter at one
point, why I don’t know because that was foolish. I suddently lost speech. I
rebooted, and things got quite interesting. The drive would seem to be
active for a while and stopped. After several other attempts with the same
result, I had a sighted friend come over. All he saw was was a cursor
blinking about every second. A reboot gave him the same results. He couldn’t
get into Windows of Safe Mode. He WAS FOMA;;U AB;E TP GET into the BIOS amd
ex[;pre sp,e p[topms/ We tried System Restore which appeared to fail. At
least we were getting text shown on a working monitor. He then tried Windows
Restore. Luckily that worked, and we got the message that System Restore had
completed successfully. The loving Windows sounds and Window-Eyes came to
life. I don’t know how much to blame on AVG. Certainly, I made a silly
mistake. However, you guys who say AVG is so great, I wonder what your
system specs are. I do have an HP Pavillion. As far as I’m concerned, AVG
needs a big heap of help. This is the first E-mail I sent since the crash.
Sorry for the rant.;

RE: Windows 10, Adobe Dc help, please!

2016-09-01 Thread Joseph Norton via Talk
Hi Joe:

I just did this on my Win10 machine and it worked.

Here's what I did.

First, press the Windows logo key. The search box will pop up. Type the
words "default programs" (without the quotes). Then, press Enter.

You will be placed in a dialog where you can set certain things as default.
Tab until you hear "link set defaults by app". Press Enter on that. Wait a
few seconds, then press the Tab key. You will be placed in a list of
applications. Press the letter A until you hear "Adobe Acrobat DC. Press
Tab twice. You should hear "set this program as default s button" Press
Space on that, then, tab to OK and press Space on that.

Then, any time you open a pdf file, Adobe DC should open.

Hope this helps.

Hello!
I have been unable to figure out how to use Adobe Acrobat DC with Windows 10
and cannot open pdf documents with it. Microsoft Edge seems to be linked
with it somehow and with the latest version of WE, I don't know how to get
rid of Edge. My default browser is Google Chrome but Adobe DC doesn't know
this. I'm stuck. Will you offer me a solution for reading, opening pdf
documents with other software and tell me how to get rid of these pesky
pieces of software (Adobe DC and Edge? Thanks.

Occasionally, I receive e-mails with links to various Youtube videos,
except that I only receive the URL without a link to click on.
Generally what I do is copy using the f-8 method and the right arrow
key. While it is tedious, this method is not much more than a minor
annoyance. But here is my question, I have tried copying the link using
the down arrow key (of course, after I have pressed f-8) and it doesn't
always work. This happens especially when the URL is at the bottom of
the e-mail. I have tried placing the cursor above the URL and then down
arrowing, and that seems to copy the text above, instead of the URL.
Have I made this confusing enough?

I am not copying a link, I am copying a URL. The reason it is not a
link is you cannot click on it. Apparently, it has to do with the
e-mail program the sender is using.

There are some minor differences I believe. I did use the AVG free for a
short time but there's either some of it that is different or probally more
so, that some of the features in the paid version are not in the free one.

I currently use Esset Smart Security. Even making recommended changes with
it, I still find it more difficult to act upon alerts it provides. Further,
their own staff acknowledges that version 9 is not accessible. If I ever go
to Windows 10, I am told that 9 is necessary. Thusd, especially since my
subscription is up, I am exploring other options, so I tried the free
version of AVG since it was recommended by others. After a trip into the

Subject: OT: issues setting up email account in outlook 2010

Hi,
I'm about to jump off a cliff with trying to set up my new computer,
particularly my email. Running through my options now. I had an IT support
guy over last night and he wasn't making progress either. This is a new
Windows 10 machine. I have an MSN email account I've had for years, but my
internet service provider nor Microsoft will give me tech support other than to
tell me to google the answer. We got the email working on the mail app built
into Windows 10 and I do recall at least one person on this list saying he
found that app relatively accessible. I haven't had a chance to play with it
yet. What I was trying to do that is to have my email working in my installed
copy of Outlook 2010. but whatever information we use for the incoming and
outgoing servers and such is not being accepted. So here are my questions:

1). Are any of you using MSN email in Outlook 2010? If so, what are your
server settings?
2) For anyone who has set up a new email account in Outlook 2010 (or possible
later versions) are you having any challenges getting the right information to
set up the account, such as incoming and outgoing server names and some numbers
that you have to put on the Advanced settings tab?
3) Does Thunderbird make this any easier?
4) I have an icloud email from my phone. Is that easy to set up in Outlook?

Seems like I used to be able to just enter the email and password and the email
program would figure out the server connection information, much like when I
set my email on my phone. Just trying to figure out my options now to get this
working. Wasn't looking forward to the process of changing my email address,
but it might be time to start fresh with a new account, if I can find one to
set up in Outlook.

OT: issues setting up email account in outlook 2010

2016-09-01 Thread Van Lant, Robin via Talk
Hi,
I'm about to jump off a cliff with trying to set up my new computer,
particularly my email.

Re: Windows 10, Adobe Dc help, please!

2016-09-01 Thread Tom Kingston via Talk
I haven't used Adobe Acrobat in a long time. But there used to be a
setting under preferences to open documents in your browser instead of
the reader. The idea was that most folks were clicking on PDF links in
their browser anyway and the browser would use the Acrobat engine to
display the document. But I think Edge has built-in support for PDF
files. So you may also want to open the Control panel, Default programs,
and make sure that PDF files are associated with Acrobat.

I've been using the paid version of AVG with window Eyes since Win 7, I'm
now using windows 8 on one maching and windows 10 on another. I am able to
navigate through everything using window eyes, some things require using the
mouse keys, but I can look at the logs, run scans, etc with no issues. The
only thing I have a problem with is when AVG pops up with an advertisement
for their PC Fix, but that's not very often. Sometimes when I hit enter on
the AVG Icon, I have to alt tab to get window eyes focused on the AVG
window. If you hit enter without knowing where you are there's no telling
what your hitting enter on. LOL HTH.

Re: selecting text

2016-09-01 Thread Tom Kingston via Talk

Nick,

I've never had the problem you mention. So I don't know what to say. I
just go to the start, press F8, move to the end using whatever method is
the quickest, press f8 again, and it copies whatever I've selected.

The only exception I've experienced which is similar to what you're
saying is when the link is long and broken over more then one line. Then
it usually doesn't work anyway because there's a space inserted at the
line break. So I copy the two lines, pop up Notepad, paste, get rid of
the space, and copy it again.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Regards,
Tom

Generally what I do is copy using the f-8 method and the right arrow

Just remember that the F8 selection method is specific to browse mode
and in both cases (in a browser or an email client) you have to go back

When I'm reading a message in Thunderbird I'm in browse mode and have to
use the F8 method. But when I'm writing a message I'm not and have to
use the standard shifted method. Same in a browser. When you're reading
a page it's F8 and when you exit browse mode to enter text in an edit
box you have to fall back on the shifted method.

The only constant is when you're in the context pane of a CHM file. then
you're always in browse mode.

options you choose will depend on what you plan to do with the text
next. This is covered in the Window-Eyes Features, Working with the
Internet, Selecting Text part of the manual.

RE: When will Edge Browser be ready Under WindowEyes

2016-09-01 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi Rod: Perhaps I was over thinking it.
I just wanted to try and be correct in mentioning the folks and where they
work.
There was no between the lines stuff intended.
The guys are now, I would think, employees of Freedom Scientific and
AISquared and GWMicro are no longer viable entities.
Thus, while this is indeed a WindowEyes list it is owned, managed and
monitored by Freedom Scientific employees.
At least that is what I thought at the time so just used Freedom Scientific
as the new and, I thought, proper company name.
Saying hay guys at the GWMicro staff or hay guys at the AISquared staff
makes no sense if they now work for Freedom Scientific.
Anyway, I might be wrong since I don't follow corporate news but if the guys
do now work for Freedom Scientific I wanted to give them all due respect
since Freedom Scientific is a very good company just like GWMicro and
AISquared were and the guys working on WindowEyes are likely the same guys
we have come to know over the years only under that new umbrella you
mentioned.
Anyway, no hidden meanings, just tried to be correct in my use of
termonology.

Hi Rick,

I have to say, my friend, obviously with tongue in cheek, that you're
barking up the wrong tree if you're addressing your comments to the Freedom
Scientific staff, since, in truth, this is an AI Squared list.
The two companies may be under the same umbrella, but, in the words of
Sting, well, the Police rock band,"it's a big enough umbrella, but it'S
always me that ends up getting' wet."
I guess what I'm trying to highlight is the fact that the two companies will
continue to work independently in the development of their screen reader
offerings, at least in the short term.

Affectionately,

Rod (smile)

RE: AVG

2016-09-01 Thread Chris Grabowski via Talk
Hi,
I'm using AVG Internet Security under windows 10 64 bit on all of my Windows 10
machines.

For me the setup read and worked in Browse mode. The uninstall worked in
Browse mode.
AVG Zen is pretty pointless, but again, it at least loaded for me in browse
mode and I can see the status of the other computers attached to my account.

To access AVG's interface, from the start menu, I type avg protection and press
enter. Or I can locate open AVG from the system tray.
This will load AVG without using Zen.
I like how I can assign different sounds for different tasks.

I don't know how accessible the free version of AVG is as I haven't used it in
about 15 years.

I currently use Esset Smart Security. Even making recommended changes with it,
I still find it more difficult to act upon alerts it provides. Further, their
own staff acknowledges that version 9 is not accessible. If I ever go to
Windows 10, I am told that 9 is necessary. Thusd, especially since my
subscription is up, I am exploring other options, so I tried the free version
of AVG since it was recommended by others. After a trip into the VIOS, a system
restore, and a Windows Restore, I'm not so sure. I am quite confident I
wouldn't have had this had I not tried AVG.

RE: selecting text

2016-09-01 Thread Chris Grabowski via Talk
Hi,
Assuming the url is the only thing on the line:
Home, then f8, end, then f8 again and finally enter.
You could always do control-right to move after the url, press f8, then home,
then f8 again, then enter.

Occasionally, I receive e-mails with links to various Youtube videos, except
that I only receive the URL without a link to click on.
Generally what I do is copy using the f-8 method and the right arrow key.
While it is tedious, this method is not much more than a minor annoyance. But
here is my question, I have tried copying the link using the down arrow key (of
course, after I have pressed f-8) and it doesn't always work. This happens
especially when the URL is at the bottom of the e-mail. I have tried placing
the cursor above the URL and then down arrowing, and that seems to copy the
text above, instead of the URL.
Have I made this confusing enough?

Some Chatroom Questions

2016-09-01 Thread Jed Barton via Talk

Hey guys,

OK, i need some help here. I am trying to put a web site together for
an internet radio station. We wanna have a chat room on the web site.
Here's the problem. Not many of the chat rooms are accessible at all
with window-eyes. Any ideas of a chatroom platform we could put on the
site for listeners that is accessible, either directly on the site, or
with some messenger program?

The pluginw e're using is called
iFlyChat

That's the plugin we currently have installed.
Has anyone ever heard of this plugin?

Thanks,
Jed
