Re: ThunderBird frustrations continued

2016-09-13 Thread Neville via Talk

Hi,
Have you tried compacting found on the file menu. Also removing the
history found under the Tools menu

As a desperate measure, you could try the following.
It would be worth taking a copy of the profile folder before doing the
following. This is only in case something goes wrong.

1. Backup your Thunderrbird settings with the Mozbackup utility. Don't
just take a copy of the Profile folder and paste it back later. The
profile folder continues to grow regardless of what you do. My Profile
folder grew to around 6.5 gb but when backed up with the Mozback utility
without emails and history, it came down to around 13 mb.

2. Un-install Tbird making sure the old profile folder is gone.
Install the latestThunderbird with an empty profile folder. Use
theMozbackup utility to put back the settings.

I recently did this to get rid of the huge profile folder.

HTH
Neville.

They have updated the program, but last time I tried it, it still didn't
worik--either on the PC end or on the web site. I complained and got the
traditional answer from Amazon that they appreciate my feedback and sent it
to their development team--a dead letter box. I haven't tried it withthe the
very latest Window-Eyes. I had them delete my PC from my devices because I
couldn't do so. I will admit that I achieved success with the IPhone app.
So, I didn't pursue work with the PC frurther. I know this is not what you

Re: Google Chrome

2016-09-13 Thread BK via Talk
Pam, bookmarks in chrome are the same as favorites in IE, except you
access them a little differently. Press alt, then arrow down once or
twice to get into the list, then press B, and that will open your
bookmarks menu where you can choose what you want to do. BTW, I have had
no problems with the shortcut keys working. I would encourage you to
check out chrome. It's worth it. For example, I could not access live
audio games on MLB with IE, but with chrome I don't even need to log in
or anything. Chrome remembers my password like it's supposed to. All
computing should be this easy, though I still use IE for other things.
Go for it.

Re: really direct this time

2016-09-13 Thread David via Talk
In reality, NO.

VirtualView has been helpful in a very few times here, but I have
numerous times experienced PDF-files that it did not read at all. Have
some documents here, that reads fine enough in QRead, does read little
or nothing in Adobe, and all you can get from the VirtualView is that it
cannot find any text to display. Have reported it to the developer, but
even the newest version shows little improvement on the matter. To what
extent this is due to some settings deep inside the system or app, I
have been unable to discern.

But for a reliable PDF interpretation, I would say it is far from what
you really need. Again, it might be due to the kind of PDF files, and
since the app is freeware, you do not loose anything by trying
installing it, and give it a go. Only remember, if it reports back that
there is no text, or if you think the document will hold more text, give
any other reader or OCR a try.

By the way, have tested the app with a few other file formats that it
supposedly could be used on, with just as little result. Even on
screenshots it come out with poor results. The app has proven helpful to
several users here, and the idea is a great one. so I wonder if tweaking
the settings could be my bottleneck. Perhaps other users could tell what
settings they have found helpful.

The hotkey of the app, is by default Alt-Ctrl-V. Should that not work on
your computer, go to the WE Controlpanel, open the App Manager, and go
under the VirtualView and choose Help, then choose Hotkey Manager and
give the app another hotkey that is not in conflict with other stuff on
your PC.

Just to add one more thing to Chip's excellent explanation, if you are
dealing with a protected document, you must go to the Info tab in the File
menu. I believe the second option is to enable editing. You can press the
Spacebar, and you'll be good to go. I know this is true for 2010 and assume
it is true in newer versions.

Hi Jed,

Do you mean compatability mode or protected mode?

If you're opening documents from email or by downloading them with your
browser, this is likely to be protected mode; I believe there is a setting
inside of Word which lets you disable the use of protected mode (but it's
supposed to be a risk for viruses, but I believe it's a very low risk).

If it is compatability mode, this is usually when you get documents created
by other people who are using an older version of Word. The compatability
mode keeps you from using newer features in word that such people would not
have in their older copies of Word.

If you aren't getting these documents from others but are creating them
yourself, It's possible that you accidentally set your default saving format
in Word to be Word 2003 and earlier (which is what compatability mode refers
to).

Hth,

Chip

RE: Who's going to take over the tutorials now that Mark is gone?

2016-09-13 Thread Chip Orange via Talk
I agree with everything you said Tom ... except your concluding paragraph
seems to have kicked the legs out from under your point that better
documentation is helpful, and necessary in this case. I would like to see
the WE manual significantly enhanced.

I don't see anything wrong with the idea of a volunteer taking over the
production of tutorials. He/she could create a site (such as a Window-Eyes
wiki or better a media wiki), which lists their tutorials and what's
covered, and links to the audio/video of the tutorial, and allows for
comments on each tutorial.

I did just this with the scripting tutorials, creating my own web site,
until GW offered to host them on their own servers. I'm not offering to do
this a second time, but I am encouraging Sky or anyone else who feels like
trying it to give it a try; I really knew nothing about producing tutorials
when I did the scripting ones, but I knew that I never would learn unless I
decided to give it a try.

It doesn't have to be a single person either; the AppleVis team is a good
example of how well multiple people can work together to produce useful,
high quality, material.

Jim,

I agree with you on more than one way to do things. I don't think the
comparison with algebra is quite spot on but the idea is. In something
like algebra different methods just click better with some people. So
choice is good. But I often find the single explanations of how to do
something on our computer is the long way around, i.e. creating a
shortcut reduces it to one key combination rather than several steps.
But of course teaching one how to best maximize their productivity
certainly isn't the responsibility of screen reader developers.

On the other hand I do agree with Sky regarding the writing of manuals.
Good documentation is in my opinion an art form. I'm not saying that the
WE manuals are particularly bad, but there is certainly room for
improvement. When the new manuals were written a lot of material was
left out or so minimized that the scant explanations really tell the
user nothing. But of course writing documentation is the last thing most
developers want to focus on or spend time on. And Sky is right about
information overload. Patience is often rare and quitting is always
easier. So it's somewhat of a no win situation.

Regards,
Tom

2016-09-13 Thread Chip Orange via Talk

If you aren't getting these documents from others but are creating them
yourself, It's possible that you accidentally set your default saving format
in Word to be Word 2003 and earlier (which is what compatability mode refers
to).

Hth,

Chip

Hey guys,

A bunch of my documents in word are opening in compatability mode. How
do i stop this from happening? I am running office 365. In fact when i
open a document, it isn't reading anything. Any ideas?

Thanks for telling me this. I was considering using it since I'm having
major league problems with internet explorer. What is this bookmarking
thing you are talking about? Pam.

I was just going to write up a message about it. So it is faster at loading
pages, but the bookmarks menu is not accessible at all. It also does crash a
good bit. I've had to switch back to firefox though because of the bookmarks
menu being what it is. And you can't reclass it because it's just classed as
a Chrome Wiedget.

So, yeah, I do like the fact that it loads pages faster. Oh, regarding the
menu, yeah it's kinda weird and the keyboard shortcuts don't work very well
to navigate it.

I finally got back to trying Google Chrome again. Faster and easier to use?
Not so fast. At least, I got from the correct site and didn’t get any
unwanted downloads. However, the menu is hard to figure out. I can’t even
set the home page I want. It does seem to load sites faster. How do I set my
hoe page?

RE: really direct this time

2016-09-13 Thread Chris Grabowski via Talk
Hi,
If the PDF can be read, IE not a scanned image, you'd get better results with
Reader or QRead.

The keystroke is alt-control-v.
Chris

I know I asked this before, but I never got a direct answer. Can Virtual View
be used instead of Adobe Acrobat or Qread or another PDF reader?
Also, are the keystrokes used to activate it Control Alt V?
Thank you.

Peace.
Linette
