Re: Window-Eyes!
Speaking of the Thousands and thousands of Window Eyes users, does anyone know roughly the size of the Window Eyes Customer base? NVDA claims to have had a bit over 60 thousand downloadws of its screen reader, World Wide, which I find an amazingly low number. Have always been curious as to the size of the distrabution of Window Eyes. Yeah, I too wish NVDA could copy the Window Eyes keyboard commands. I find the Insert Up Arrow to be a bit Funky when reading the line the cursor is found. RE: No future; Window-Eyes is dead!
Well, Window-Eyes is unfortunately definitely dead. It is irrational to presuppose that VFO will support two competing screen readers, with one a lot cheeper than the other. Sad to say, JAWS won and WE lost the screen-reader wars. Those of us with technical skills ought to help NVDA to improve over time so we can keep up with Windows 10 advances. RE: Window-Eyes!
Jim: I think you will find that the user number is declining. Importantly: those users who have paid for their licenses to use Window-Eyes has been declining. It isn't really current users who matter - it is future potential users who have chosen to go to NVDA or who have shelled out to buy JAWS because their livelihoods depend upon a working, reliable screen reader today, tomorrow and beyond. Cash flow does not come from current users. It comes courtesy of a product being available which new people are prepared to buy. I have two installs on a software maintenance agreement, purchased nealry 18 months ago. That cash, provided to AI Squared out of loyalty and good faith has gone. I would have expected at least one significant upgrade against my SMA and that would have been enough to restore my faith in AI Squared. And now: if someone were to ask me about Window-Eyes - I'd say don't spend a cent on it. Demo it using the Office deal. So: I'm actively prepared to discourage people from purchasing Window-Eyes, because it isn't worth the purchase and the sma IS NOT A GOOD FAITH RELATIONSHIP ANYMORE. By contrast: people who actively support NVDA seem happy to continue to do so, because of frequent upgrades. I'm not an NVDA user, so don't know how good or bad it really is. If reducing paid customer demand was not so - the Window-Eyes for Office deal would not have been put in place, and the VFO merger or takeover would not have occurred. Why are people so prepared to trash Window-Eyes on this list, making it very clear that they are using NVDA with some degree of personal preference? So: please don't accuse those of us who disagree with you as simply providing speculation - you don't have the user statistics to back up your claim either. If you wanted to show some leadership, email someone senior at VFO and find out what the official word is and then paste the reply into a truly informative message. People have been commenting on this tread for 10 months. Why has no one from VFO shut down the threads? Why has VFO not written to those of us as critics and paying customers and told us what is going to happen? In short: misrepresenting the opinions of others who disagree with you is unhelpful. Many other companies in the real world have more than one brand of products in their offerings, why not Window-eyes which is far better than the other brand VFO sells. Also if Window-eyes is dead like so many speculate, VFO had no issues in selling me a Window-eyes SMA a month ago for $199.00 for the next two major upgrades! Narrator has a long way to go to be a viable screen reader and do we want to be relying on Narrator for Windows, like those poor folks who have MAC and appple products having only one choice, Voice over! NVDA is coming along, but it has a way to go to be equal to Window-eyes. I am successfully using Window-eyes 9.1 with XP Pro. YOU are probably laughing, but MY company did over $500,000.00 using XP pro, Window-eyes 9.1, AVG 2 year protection software, Firefox for my browser, Office 2003 with the ms converter patch to access office 2007 and up files, and good old outlook express and outlook as email clients with little or no issues! I also have over 6 computers with windows 7 pro with the latest Window-eyes 9.54 with little issues. I wil go to Dolphin screen reader before I am stuck with no Window-eyes and have NVDA as a backup screen reader. Who knows, maybe if the alternative facts are true about the end of Window-eyes, maybe some other adaptive company wil take it over and keep it alive, Like HumanWare. So I wil expect a refund from VFO if Window-eyes does not come out with any major upgrades and use my refund to purchase Dolphin screen reader software instead. Re: No future; Window-Eyes is dead!
Just for reference sake. I did call vfo and ask about the we version of fusion. I asked straight up if it was a dead product and she said yes. She said the jfw version of fusion will be out within the next 2 months and will be sold as fusion version 11. If you have a esp (ai2's version of a sma) it will be automatically delivered as major upgrade. For those who don't have sma, fusion home version is $200. Neospeech voices will not be in it. Only eloquence and vocalizer. I am not buying. Re: A blast from the past?
My first computer was an EVAS computer running dos and articvision. I got it from the Commission for the blind in the beginning of 1991. I also had a key braille braille display. That package cost the Commission a bundle! In the later 1990s, they were going to update my equipment, giving me another computer running dos and vocal eyes and a power braille; but since they changed their rules, I only got to use it in training and I never got to take it home. They said I would get it when I got another job, which I never managed to get. The windows computers were not purchased from the state. I got the first one of those in 2000. I began learning to work with computers on my own in 1992; my first screen reader and synthesizer were purchased with my own funds from E V A S in Rhode Island. I had not known that I could have made a purchase right here in my village through Beyond Sight, Inc. which initially was Second Sight. I don't recall what the name of the screen reader was back then, it was most certainly for DOS; it came with Apollo synthesizer, but not knowing much too much about computers, I could not get it to work, so, I sent it back for a refund. Learning to use my computer became a huge problem for nearly five weeks! Then I got some more information about Second Sight owned by Jim Misener. I visited him at home, almost a 40-minute drive from where I lived. He talked to me about Vocal-Eyes! I was hesitant; he did several demos for me and allowed me to play with his computer. He showed me some basic Vocal-Eyes commands. Wow, Vocal-Eyes' responsiveness sold me at last! I bought the screen reader from him with Sounding Board which I still have to this day. Later, I purchased Speak-out directly from GW Micro and I still have it, although the battery is dead and I can't find the charger and the parallel port connector it came with. Jim Misener did move his company to a store front and changed its name to Beyond Sight, Inc. About 12 years ago or thereabout, he sold it and got out of business altogether. I have been a customer of GW Micro since the latter half of 1992! I later learned that GW Micro was an offshoot of Computer Aids Corporation which, back in the '80's was a pioneer in its own right in the area of screen reading technology albeit Apple's II-E was the most popular stuff in town next to Tandy and Atari if memory serves. I was a student at Indiana University Bloomington when Computer Aids Corporation, Inc. made a name for itself; however, I didn't pay any close attention to computers and held on to my typewriter for dear life! Some of what I said above about GW Micro may be incorrect, but I'm sure there are more knowledgeable folks here who can bail me out by helping to correct a few things. Aside from anything else, that's my story as it relates to my involvement with GW Micro! I'll go back to watching Window-Eyes in its hospice bed take the last breath! Having NVDA be purchased by VFO would be quite telling, wouldn't it. NVDA isn't yet in the same class of screen Reader as JAWS, so the VFO folks may not bother with NVDA, thinking it isn't much of a threat, and are only used by those who couldn't ever afford JAWS. Let's not forget that NVDA also suffers from the same Cash Flow problems GW Micro did.NVDA survives because they receive grant money, and other support from other sources of money. RE: Re outlook 2010 settings
Hi Mark, Here's some of my notes: Best, Rod How to configure Window-Eyes for use with Outlook First, you must install the set files for the most current version of Office or whatever version of Office you are using. This is done from the Factory Settings dialog, opened from the File menu within the Window-Eyes control panel. Indeed, Office 365 is the most accessible version of Office to use with any screen reader. At the time of this writing, Office 2016 is the most current version of Office, and it is the version included in Office 365. Then, install the Office Enhance app, and then the Outlook Enhance app, in this precise order. Even if the above two apps are already installed, you can reinstall them without uninstalling them. Note that a reboot is always required after installing the Outlook Enhance app. Next, make sure that the Outlook Enhance add-on isn't disabled within Outlook, as follows: >From the main Outlook window, press: alt-f, t, A twice, tab 4 times.
