Re: Google Chrome - Download the Fast, Secure Browser from Google
For me, Chrome was pretty straight forward. For the most part, I'm doing the same thing I did on IE. One thing though, when you click on the icon for Chrome, you are already in the address bar, so you can just type the URL you want. If you're on a website and you want to go to a different one, type control l, and then type the new URL. On 3/6/2021 8:00 PM, Carol Smith via Talk wrote: Hi Rod, Thank you for your offer. Hi Group users, I have reached the point where I can barely use Internet Explorer anymore. It was suggested that I switch to Chrome. Are there any users on this list that would be willing to help me get started with installation and basics of the program? I am nearly finished my period of brain fog which was an after effect of Covid. It does make it a bit more difficult for me to remember things, but I am, as I said, nearly back to normal. Thank you for any suggestions. Carol ___ Any views or opinions presented in this email are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent those of Ai Squared. David, do you have similar instructions for Google Chrome on Windows 7? I have Win10 at home, but we are still using Windows 7 here at work. Please forgive me if you had previously given those instructions for Windows 7. I didn't think that IE was going to become useless on sites such as PayPal so soon. If not I do understand. Thanks for all the help on Win10. Take care Have a great day, 73 Bob Hicks, KC8CR -Original Message- From: Talk [mailto:talk-bounces+bob=seeinghandassociation@lists.window-eyes.com] On Behalf Of David Moore via Talk Sent: Tuesday, December 12, 2017 7:42 PM To: Window-Eyes Discussion List Cc: David Moore Subject: RE: google chrome Hey Bob and all! I will paste my text tutorial on the Google Chrome browser right below this message. You can read it here right in the email. I take you through everything, and all of the settings. Here is the tutorial right below! Tutorial for Using the Google Chrome Browser By David Moore This tutorial will be done with the latest update of Chrome. I will also use JAWS 18, JAWS 2018, and NVDA 2017.4 for this tutorial, because they all work the same in Chrome. Finally, I will use Windows 10 Creators Update latest public build. I will assume that you have downloaded and installed Chrome. There should be a shortcut on your desktop. Section One: Launching Chrome: One way to Launch Chrome, is to press the Windows key or CTRL+Escape and type Chrome in the search edit field, and press enter when you hear JAWS say Chrome. However, since you have already downloaded Chrome, You will have a shortcut icon on your desktop. So next, find the shortcut for Chrome on your desktop, and press enter to open Chrome. The short cut will actually say Google Chrome, so press G to find the Google Chrome icon on your desktop. The first very important step, is to press Windows+up arrow to maximise the window. Chrome often opens with the window not maximise, and you will get undesirable results. Section Two: Bringing up a web site. Press CTRL+L or Alt+D and type the following: www.freedomscientific.com The Freedom Scientific web site comes up very quickly. All navigation commands like: H for heading, E for edit field, C for combo box, and so on all work just the same in Chrome. Section Three: The Virticle Chrome menu: I will press Alt+F. The Chrome menu is open. This is a very large virticle menu that you just keep pressing up and down arrow through. I will press insert+up arrow to hear the first option in this menu. New Tab, CTRL+T. You can press that command right from the web site you are on. New Window, CTRL+N You can press these commands right from your web page, instead of coming here. New incognito Window. History sub menu. I will press right arrow here to see what is in this sub menu! History, CTRL+H So, there is a key command for reading your history. You can read a few sites you were on right here. I will press left arrow to close this history sub menu. Downloads, CTRL+J There is the command for opening your downloads you have downloaded with Chrome. Next, the important Bookmarks sub menu. I will press right arrow, to open this. I hear, bookmark this page, CTRL+D That command will bookmark the page you are reading. Next down arrow, says show bookmarks bar, CTRL+Shift+B That command, will show your bookmarks on your Chrome browser for all to see. I do not want that. Here is the important one. manage bookmarks The command is, CTRL+Shift+O In here, you can organize your bookmarks into folders, see the bookmarks you have imported from different browsers, and very importantly, you can download, to your computer, an HTML file of all of your bookmarks in Chrome. On your computer, you can press enter on this file, after it downloads, and a page will show up in Chrome with a list of all bookmarks you have saved in Chrome. This is an awesome way to download all of your bookmarks right to your computer, so you can back them up. That is all for manage bookmarks. Next, I hear import bookmarks and settings. press enter on this, and you can import all bookmarks and settings from IE, and Firefox, right into Google Chrome, and they will be in their corresponding folders. Now, I hear all of my saved bookmarks as I continue to arrow down. Very important! Sometimes, when I open that bookmarks sub menu, I do not land on the choices I mension here, but instead, I start hearing my saved bookmarks. If this happens, I press up arrow a few times, and it gets me to these choices. Keep in mind, that many of these choices, like bookmark manager, have key commands, so you do not have to come to this bookmarks sub menu at all. You only need to come here most of the time, to arrow through your saved bookmarks, and enter on the desired one. To save a web site as a bookmark, Just press CTRL+D and press enter, and your bookmark is saved. I will now press left arrow, to close the Bookmarks sub menu! I will continue to down arrow through this virticle Chrome menu that we entered

Hi Mack, I'm guessing that you're using Alt-F4 to close tabs and that's why Google is closing. That's the only time I get the prompt in IE. When I close a tab in IE or Chrome with Control-W I just go back to the first tab. RE: google chrome
This web browsing business is very frustrating. On Monday, I needed to get a password reminder from Delta Airlines and was routed to the password reset page. With Internet explorer 11, I found a heading for password reset, but no edit boxes to perform the reset. Being a somewhat reasonable human being, I muttered some phrases I won't repeat and got all ready to launch a campaign against Delta to make their site more accessible. While my frustrations may have been somewhat correctly placed, I used Google Chrome to go to the same site. What do you know, the edit boxes to enter and re-enter my new password were as plain as day. Last week, I had to start entering time for work on a new time sheet system. The first thing I had to do was to reset my temporary password. I could find no place to do that with Internet Explorer. Again, trying Google Chrome resulted in additional text and links showing on the same web page that allowed me to do both. Okay, so maybe I should switch always to Google Chrome, right? Possibly that makes sense, but it turns out that I can't actually enter my time with Google Chrome. The edit boxes inside the table of dates does not seem to activate with JAWS or NVDA. On the other hand, those edit boxes act completely normal with Internet Explorer. Go figure. As many of you know, there is work going on to change the approach to accessibility inside FireFox making current new versions not accessible. >From what I have read, the ideas that are being explored have some promise, but I am willing to bet that it will represent another interpretation of web pages that, while possibly giving us better access, will add another variable. Of course, we already see differences between the Windows platform and IOS, so this isn't anything new, but I find myself wondering how such basic differences can occur in the experiences I've outlined above. Also, what do we do inemployment situations when an employer may not allow the installation of additional web browsers as mine doesn't? I will continue to down arrow through this virticle Chrome menu that we entered by just pressing alt. The next few are very self explanatory. The next one I will mension, is the more tools submenu. I will press right arrow on this. I hear Save Page as, and the command, CTRL+S. Next, Save to desktop. This allows you to save

RE: JAWS, Window-Eyes, Copying In Google Chrome, Problem Resolved
Thanks, Rebecca. That is very helpful, and something to be aware of. All the best, Rod -Original Message- From: Talk [mailto:talk-bounces+rod_hutton=hotmail@lists.window-eyes.com] On Behalf Of Rebecca Lineberger via Talk Sent: June 4, 2017 8:01 AM To: Window-Eyes Discussion List <talk@lists.window-eyes.com> Subject: JAWS, Window-Eyes, Copying In Google Chrome, Problem Resolved I posted the below problem several days ago. I post the solution now in case it proves helpful to someone else. There's so much to learn when switching to a new screen reader that it will take a while to sort out all the settings. Using the insert v quick settings menu when in Chrome, I changed the "select and copy full content using on-screen highlight" to "from virtual cursor." All the article now appears in my Word document when I paste it in. It was not necessary to change the setting in Internet Explorer. Who knows about Edge, when we get there. Smile. Also, yesterday, in trying to gain access to a "Play" graphic in JAWS, I resolved the same issue in Window-Eyes, where I'd previously had access and then lost it. I'd had to switch to Chrome, but then it disappeared there too. Web pages are updated (redesigned) as are browsers, and accessibility is not always guaranteed with the "improved" versions. The learning never ends. Smile. Rebecca To: Window-Eyes Discussion List (talk@lists.window-eyes.com) Subject: JAWS, Window-Eyes, Copying In Google Chrome I've tried repeatedly to copy several articles on different web sites using JAWS and Google Chrome. I tried selecting text with the shift down-arrow, copying and pasting, an, when that did not work, setting a temporary place marker, using JAWS find to locate the last word in the article, and placing a marker through the layered keystroke menu and copying and pasting. I get a copy confirmation but when I paste the article into Word 2010 or NotePad, I get a few lines but nothing more. When I switch to Window-Eyes and use the F8 method to copy plain text, the article is all there. If I then bring up the article in Internet Explorer, the copy function works as it should in JAWS. Has anyone else experienced this. I realize JAWS is probably putting all its efforts into making Edge accessible, but I would hope that Chrome too could be made fully functional. There are some things that JAWS does better than Window-Eyes. I wish the best of both programs could be combined into one. Smile. For anyone who wants to play with one of the articles I was trying to copy, here is the link: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2017/06/black-holes-gravitational-waves-s pace-genius-science/ Rebecca Windows 10 and latest versions of Window-Eyes and JAWS. RE: A time to have another look at Google Chrome
Great. Remember that many of the browse mode functions for navigation work with Chrome. Isn't it strange of Microsoft that their browsers are falling behind in accessibility compatibility, and that they've deliberately shut screen readers out of Edge. It takes a bit of getting used to, but like anything new, in a day or so I probably won't even notice, except for trying to use the IE key combinations that have been ingrained over so many years. Re: A time to have another look at Google Chrome
Hi Vaughan, Cheers for the heads up on Google Chrome. I installed it earlier this morning, and once I found where to import my favourites from IE, I've been picking sites at random, searching, browsing, and waiting for the dreaded crash, that happily never arrived. It takes a bit of getting used to, but like anything new, in a day or so I probably won't even notice, except for trying to use the IE key combinations that have been ingrained over so many years. Re: A time to have another look at Google Chrome
Hi Vaughan, Several months ago, I had become so discussed with IE 11 and WE that I also gave Chrome a look. IE 11 just kept crashing with WE and on many sites it just didn't read info in fields that needed input. So, Because I was also on the market for a new phone and was giving Android phones real consideration, I tried Chrome on my toshiba Laptop. Well, after just a couple of hours, I got the hang of it and quickly realized that mahy of the IE keyboard shortcuts were the same, and so I felt quite comfortable in a short time. I have not gone back to IE. I should also tell you that I have used the Chase bank site to pay credit cards and Chrome did very well. HOwever, for some unknown reason, Chase feels as though they must continue to change there webbsite and in doing so, they have it a bit more difficult to use. But, I did manage to get the job done. By the way, I have procured a new Android phone and within just a few hours I was very comfortable with the Talkback screenreader that comes with Android which supports a full touch interface. I have had it only a couple of weeks but I think I have nastered much of it. So, I suggest you stick with Chrome because it is much more stable with WE than is IE 11. Window-eyes, Google Chrome and Google Docs
Hi: I am running the latest version of Window-eyes, and the latest version of Google Chrome on my Windows 7 system. When I Open Google Chrome and then open a document in Google Docs, I find that I can't edit or read what I have typed. For example, if I create a new document in Google Docs, then type "This is a test." and press the Enter key, Window-eyes just says "blank" when I press the Up Arrow key to try to read the line. If I do the same exercise as aboveusing Mozilla Firefox, then Window-eyes reads perfectly. Has anybody else noticed this and is there a solution to the problem or is it just a problem with Chrome? Re: Google Chrome
Pam, bookmarks in chrome are the same as favorites in IE, except you access them a little differently. Press alt, then arrow down once or twice to get into the list, then press B, and that will open your bookmarks menu where you can choose what you want to do. BTW, I have had no problems with the shortcut keys working. I would encourage you to check out chrome. It's worth it. For example, I could not access live audio games on MLB with IE, but with chrome I don't even need to log in or anything. Chrome remembers my password like it's supposed to. All computing should be this easy, though I still use IE for other things. Go for it. google chrome help with window eyes.
Google chrome help with window eyes. Hello. I had to reinstall google chrome since it did not appear in the programs and features control panel using windows 7. I did everything that was suggested, as far as backing up my settings and data from the google folder and copied it to my documents folder. I had to get rid of everything that was related to google including the google folder in my apdatta local folder. This is under my user name. I did not touch the documents folder since my backed up stuff for chrome sat. So I did a complete install of google chrome including copying my settings and data from the back up in to the newly created folder in the apadata local folder and had to look for the folder google had to clear out what was there so I would not get the annoying page that kept on coming up, plus I could have my old settings back. I did copy the chrome folder. in to the empty google folder under apdata local folder. Well I thought it went well, the only thing is window eyes used to be able to see everything that is in the menu bar, just wanted to make sure that I did everything correctly, cause I had to shut down WE and launch NVDA just to make sure that it wass all there in the menu bar and with NVDA it read everything. How do I fix this so window eyes can read everything on the menu bar again? I tried to reinstall the chrome set file hoping that it would fix it, but no luck there. Should I do a factory reset or do a complete uninstall of window eyes just so I can get everything back in order? Can't remember your password? Do you need a strong and secure password? this has already been sent to the programmers. usually when browse mode is on and you press the space bar on a radio button you have to tab away and go back before w e will announce the status of that radio button. but press r to go to the first radio button then turn browse mode off. then you can move between options with the arrow keys if there are more radio buttons and it will give you the status and the option you are on. -Original Message- From: Michael Massey via Talk Sent: Thursday, December 31, 2015 8:32 AM To: 'Window-Eyes Discussion List' Subject: Radio buttons not announcing checked status using Google Chrome Hi. Today I went online to my bank's website using Google Chrome. I entered my bank's website address focusing the address bar by pressing alt-d. After I logged in, I used the transfer feature to send money to my selected recipients. When I checked the boxes to transfer the funds immediately, the state of the radio buttons would not properly announce the status. I know that the radio buttons were checked because I was able to complete the transactions. The radio buttons still announced that they were unchecked. I hope that this issue will be resolved in the next release of Window-eyes. I’ve had no issues with Chrome, getting it from https://www.google.com/chrome/browser/desktop/ So hopefully, this should help. Meant to say that I agree, always get programs you wish to install from their actual sites. Hth, and have a wonderful day. problems with Window-eyes and Google Chrome
Hi: I have a couple of problems when I am using Window-eyes and Google Chrome to read articles or email messages. First, when I am reading an article or an email message, the first character of a line is absent, for instance, if a line begins with the word and Window-eyes just reads nd. The other problem that I just discovered is that when I am writing an email from my gmail account, I cannot read what I have just written in either the message body or the TO and SUBJECT fields. I do not notice this behaviour when I am using Nvda with Google Chrome, nor do I notice it when I am using Firefox or Internet explorer. What is the problem. Re: downloading with Google Chrome
Hey, Chris. In order to make chrome even open, I must run it in administrator mode and even then i can not do any typing whatsoever, and this is in any screen reader. I think this happened since when the first time i ran chrome i set it to windows 8 mode. After that i've been having trouble with it. I'm using windows 10, but i thought that windows 10 would be able to work with programsd from windows 8 and 8.1. Do you know how i can get it to work? It looks like a nice browser. But i can't wait to try spartan. *smile* On 3/30/2015 1:25 PM, Chris Grabowski via Talk wrote: This is correct for the mp3 files, but zip or exe you would still just hit enter on the link. RE: using Google chrome
When getting to the area to type in what you want to search for and hit enter to turn off browse mode WE says invalid required before you type in anything. This is the expected behaviour when a HTML form control has a required attribute. It is exposed as invalid until valid content is entered. I think this is counter intuitive, but it is how the attribute is specified in HTML and how browsers have implemnted it thus the information is exposed in accessibility APIs and conveyed to users. Chris, oh that it were so. After following the download link and then download for Windows, there is something, perhaps a popover which causes WE to stop reading. Even better, get Chrome here www.ninite.com/chrome or check the Chrome check box on the main Ninite website and click get installer button.
