RE: VFO acquisition of Ai Squared
Karyn I doubt that anti-trust can come into play in this situation. For one thing, there is no barrier to entry into the screen reader/equipment market other than it makes little economic sense for anyone to do so given the economy and the disincentives for entrepreneurship. The other, given the first, is that these are struggling businesses that are just attempting to keep afloat. If the Justice Department attempted to block this, all that would happen is that AISquared would likely fold not survive. These are mergers and consolidations out of desperation more than anything else. Keep in mind that when HJ and GW-Micro came into existence, we were at the beginning of the era of the dotcoms. We are not now living in such a time. I have a great need for Christ; I have a great Christ for my need. Hi Doug and list. I need to thank you Doug for the positive perspective and the sincerity of what you have said. I just hope that internally, there is product design collaboration, and if that is so, user concern, (including mine) will of course disipate. You are one of those great software engineers in this industry, so I'm trusting your judgement. I note the emphasis on changes in corporate xstructure. So hopefully - that includes proper international support, the opening up of better braille support across screen reader products, and the leadership commitment to direct interaction with customers, such as you and Dan created way back in the Vocal-Eyes days. Say what you want, but when a leveraged buyout firm purchases a bunch of businesses in an industry, the customers are in real trouble. RE: VFO acquisition of Ai Squared
Hi: So would you contact the Justice Department or the FTC to file a complaint? There are allot of scriptors out here who have put allot of time and effort into work that wont be used under jaws and the folks who have purchassed the office product to get hthe low-cost version of WindowEyes will be hurt as well if, when, WindowEyes is cancelled. I thought about calling but jaws actually works a little better than WindowEyes in Visual Studio, my main work platform, for now, so the loss of WindowEyes will only cost me if the Microsoft / WindowEyes pricing structure is deprecated and I am forced to buy a full copy of jaws. However, I think Anti-trust suits are usually brought by the Justice Department, and as this really affects only a very small smidgeon of the overall computer market, I wouldn't look for any action by DOJ. on this. There may be a private right of action, by stockholders, but I don't know for sure, and since I'm now retired--you know--a recovering attorney--LOL, I'm not really interested in finding out.but since there are other options including Narrator which I believe has no cost, I doubt this would fly either. Also, you would have to show that the public, even a segment of the public has been harmed by this acquisition, and since it has just happened, that would be difficult to prove. I haven't kept up with all these developments much since I still use XP, and Windows 8.4. I've been thinking about upgrading to Windows 7, since I've read so many people experiencing difficulty of one kind or another in using windows X. Maybe I should make the switch to Apple. Under this new leadership and available resources, I'm ready to take that and do whatever it takes to have the best possible solutions for our customers, for every low vision and blind person out there. People may be concerned about lack of competition causing innovation and quality to suffer. Nothing can be further from the truth. There is still plenty of competition out there, including free options but we have the determination and drive, starting at the corporate level all they way down to provide the best quality products, hands down. Yes, this will take some time to prove but I'm hoping that everyone out there will give us that opportunity. Again, I'm putting everything I have into this venture and I wouldn't do that if I didn't believe in it. And by bombshell, I don't mean a bad thing, I just mean it is shocking and unexpected news. I know this may seem scary to many people. I know that we have a great number of extremely loyal customers who may be feeling betrayed. There are lots of legit concerns and questions that I'm sure come to everyone's minds. But honestly, nobody knows the answers at this point. We are just starting the discussions internally of how best to take all our new resources, talent, products, etc. and meld them together to give the best customer experience. For the next 6 months or so, it will be business as usual. After the 6 months, who knows at this point but I can guarantee the customers will benefit from the results. Nobody will be abandoned or taken advantage of, etc. I'm very impressed with John Blake (CEO of VFO). I truly believe John is in this for the customer. Re: VFO acquisition of Ai Squared
It's been a while since I've had to have any knowledge of this, as this was not my area of legal expertise. Look forward to Mosen spinning it for the FS Cast soon. Doug, I believe as many on this list, you had no choice, so it is more proffitable to go along than resist, so hey since you, cannot beat em, you join em, simple as that. Company man! go for it and leave the ideals of those who have spent over 30 years now supporting your, company. Now it is a huge agency combined with multi-fragmented support to their own agenda, not ours. Money drives, we don't thrive, we pay, and continue to pay. Let us all support NVDA and pray they don't get absorbed as well. They do more than Window-Eyes and JFW concerning many aspects of windows ten right now. -- Curtis DelzerOn Tue, 14 Jun 2016 16:18:46 + Doug Geoffray via Talk wrote: > Hello everyone, > > I wanted to chime in here and give my personal thoughts to the bombshell > released today regarding VFO (the parent company of Freedom Scientific > and Optelec) acquiring Ai Squared. Re: VFO acquisition of Ai Squared
If he had, I would not be mentioning it on this list. While this might be true, there are two things. 1. it is far too new to speculate on this. The product structures, pricing changes if any etc have not been established yet. While my personal view is that from a consumer perspective, it has lots of potential not to turn out well, that counts for nothing and we don't have any facts yet to support an anti-trust speculation. 2. This is such a small industry, I doubt such a small market share company would attract the attention of regulators. Brian. There's always Dolphin and System Access. I must say that JAWS hasn't innovated excitingly with the last few versions. I wonder if the screenreaders merge, what happens, since GW Micro is free and the other one isn't. Does free option go? Interesting, but thank God for the other groups, i.e Dolphin, NVDA, SA, Baum. No one will be abandoned or taken advantage of, that's smooth, but in the views of the majority of us, not truthful. Well dug it already cost a bank for some of these products, and now who is to stop the; new group from even raising the prices higher??? Personally, I'm extremely excited with the possibilities. Think about it, we now have all the best minds in this industry under one roof. Instead of us duplicating resources, we can combine them and inovate. Although Freedom has been our number one competitor since Dan and I started GW Micro in 1990, I've always had great respect for their engineers. Okay, I've had questions about their corporate leadership, a certain lawsuit comes to mind (smile), but that was a completely different leadership team. That was a different owner and a different CEO. Vector has an outstanding reputation. John Blake has shown great leadership and concern for the customer. RE: VFO acquisition of Ai Squared
With all due respect, Why should we believe it? It's like the Jeff Jones of the AT industry. I've watched JAWS decline in innovation, Which is why I went to windoweyes and NVDA and system access. This was a chance for everyone to break away from JAWS, and now it seems to me that that is all we're going to be left with. Again, it's the Munich agreement, and no matter what is said here, it doesn't change the fact that we the customer are sold out.
