So, if you are comfortable with Windows 7, 8, or 8.1, this tool will help you decide when, or whether to upgrade to Windows 10. As far as I know, you may not need to be as concerned after July 29, as MicroSoft is going to charge for updating to Windows 10 after that, so, I doubt they will push it as heavily at that point. If you want to download this tool, you can get it from: http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/ There are both an installer and a stand-alone executable that you can just run if you don't like installers. The advantage of installing the product is that it can watch your system and warn you if MicroSoft begins pushing Windows 10 to you. This is just my opinion so take it for what it's worth. I agree if need be I won't update the updates. I have them set to where I select what gets installed anyway. A lot of problems could be avoided by not clicking on links you don't know emails that don't sound right probably aren't don't open attachments if you don't know the sender or aren't expecting it. RE: Update Warning
Hi: No one should be forced to upgrade, if what they're working with works for them. Though I have not had the issues with Windows 10 you have, and I am doing pretty well under Windows 10, I see no urgency if someone does not want to update to Windows 10. My wife, for example, is quite happy with Windows 8.1. It does what she wants, and, she is happy with that. Interestingly, I did install Windows 10 on her computer, but, the HD decided to fail at about the same time, so the computer would randomly reboot. I replaced the HD in her laptop and reverted back to Windows 8.1 and she is running along with the GWX control panel watching out for her. -Original Message- From: Talk [mailto:talk-bounces+joseph.norton=gmail@lists.window-eyes.com] On Behalf Of net bat via Talk Sent: Thursday, February 25, 2016 1:08 AM To: Gary Melconian <garym...@msn.com>; Window-Eyes Discussion List <talk@lists.window-eyes.com> Subject: Re: Update Warning your full of it. i have not had any access denied to my account with windows 7 and i will stay with it until 2020 when support ends. win 10 is not better when it keeps changeing permissions on your account and you get denied access to your own account and files you created or installed. twice i could not boot the system and had to re format and start over because i was denied access to my account. this has happened 3 times with a upgrade and with 2 clean re installs. i got locked out of my own account and i could only log in as a guest there is still many places in windows 10 where window eyes will lag behind, lose speech or not speak at all. apps? there hasn't been a singl app that i am interested in and few are w e accessible. periphials and software? for get it. there is no drivers for my 1 year old dell printer. i would have to upgrade openbook i would not be able to use windows live mail which is totally accessible for me without haveing to find things on the screen with the mouse. microsoft wants us to use the windows 10 mail program which is still not accessible. they are changeing the protocalls for email so you can't use windows wlive mail, hot mail etc. with a microsoft account. the un accessible edge browser? how long will it be before there is full access to this? i do not have a microsoft account and if this will be the only choice i have the computer will go out the door. i refuse to put everything in the cloud where i would not have any control over stopping hackers from getting my personal information. with everyones info being stored on just one microsoft server the whole pc worlds personal info could be hacked at one fel swoop. no thanks. -Original Message- From: Gary Melconian via Talk Sent: Wednesday, February 24, 2016 9:20 PM To: 'Pamela Dominguez' ; 'Window-Eyes Discussion List' ; 'Pastor Gil Pries' Subject: RE: Update Warning No matter you are going ot get windows 10. RE: Update Warning
Hi Andy, You are right, updating to windows 10 pro, which I would suggest only doing if you must, can cost more in software not running under windows 10 or peripherals not having drivers for windows 2010. I am still using very successfully windows XP pro on four of my desktops, keeping my AVG internet security up to date and using firefox when necessary for browsing. I love I like using outlook express and outlook 2003, which doesn't have all the issues that windows live, thunderbird or other some what accessible email clients are being used under windows 7 and higher. I also have windows 7 pro on 5 other desktops in my home, with office either 2010 or 2013, so I can see what works on windows 7 pro. I also have 1 laptop with windows 8.1 and 1 laptop with windows 10 pro, so I am up-to-date and can support my customers who are running those operating systems and see what peripherals and software work under windows 7, 8, and 10. I also received office 2016 from my wife's job for $10.00, but have not installed it yet, since I don't see any advantage in using it right now, to tell you the truth, I am still using very successfully office 2003 on my XP machines with the patch that opens up office 2007 and higher file tuypes. My thinking is, if it still works for what you want to do, why upgrade unless your work place demands it or you like being a test monkey! Eventually like all , you will be forced by Microsoft to be at windows 10, but that is years away and for now windows XP pro and Windows 7 pro are just great! RE: Update Warning
Hi. I was one of those who went from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 the day it was released, but I had some issues with this PC. Elloquence would get stuck on a phoneme, and the only way to fix it was to turn the PC off and back on again. Even worse, the PC would randomly reboot itself. I ended up sending it to the Lenovo hospital where they replaced the hard drive. Thankfully the computer was still under warranty, so I didn't have to pay for the repair. I then decided to give Windows 10 another try, but the same thing with speech getting stuck happened again. I called up Microsoft Accessibility and reverted to Windows 8.1. I was a happy user of 8.1, until a couple of weeks ago when my speech did what it did in 10. I discovered that the problem was in the USB hub that I had my external sound card and wireless keyboard connected to. I then decided to once again try Windows 10, and, knock on the wooden computer table, I've had no problems. I upgraded on February 13, so it's be en a little less than two weeks ago. I'm sharing this to let those who think it's important to update to the latest OS that there are circumstances where this may not be the best thing to do. Believe it or not, I have a PC that will be fifteen years old in October of this year, and it has XP on it. I haven't had a single problem with that old desktop PC, and it has been on constantly for most of its life. I have a ham radio program on it which allows other ham radio operators the ability to connect to a radio that I have hooked to the PC so that they can talk to hams in the Lexington, Kentucky area. Sometimes the latest and greatest thing isn't necessary. Don't get me wrong, I really like Windows 10, and I don't regret upgrading to it on my Lenovo laptop. Just realize that not everybody has different levels of hardware that may limit them to a certain OS. Just something to consider. Have a blessed day, and don't work too hard. The main concern for me is that I have an older computer with older peripherals. I'm sure my computer can run Windows 10, but I fear that there may not be Windows 10 drivers for my peripherals, meaning that I will have to spend money to replace them, so this isn't necessarily a painless or free deal for me. Re: Windows Update Warning
That was probably a good thing to do. I haven't followed this thread very closely, but to prevent this windows 10 thing from happening again, you'll want to use something called GWX control panel. Note it's not a product made by GW Micro or AI squared, it's just got a similar name. Here's a link to the download page. http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/ I'll even make it easier for y'all. here's a direct link to the installer, and then a direct link to the stand-alone executable. The only real difference is that the installer creates entries on your start menu and puts an icon for it on your desktop. I chose the stand-alone executable, because you just run it, press enter on one button and you're done. Direct link to installer: http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/GwxControlPanelSetup.exe Direct link to stand-alone executable: http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/GWX_control_panel.exe Remember, the stand-alone executable is just something you run, so if you download that version, remember where your download folder is so you can run it. If you're not sure where your download folder is and you just wanna keep it simple, choose the installer. the setup screen is a standard one so you should have no trouble, and you can run the program just like any other piece of software. I know this is a big thing for a lot of people including me. My pc is just too old and isn't powerful enough to run Windows 10, so I wanted to take those silly update pop-up windows away, and I know a lot of you do too. Hope this helps.
