Re: [talk-ph] Fwd: [OSM-talk] Scholarship program to State of the Map 2011
Dear everyone, I am know collating my mental notes in preparation for the State of the PH lightning talk for SOTM2011. And since this is a community presentation, I might as well ask you on what we should be presenting. The primary source materials of my talk is the wiki [0,1,2] and of course, this list [3]. For sure the OSM-PH data has grown tremendously in the the past 2 years. There a number of factors that may have contributed to this growth. I would like to focus the presentation on on 4 main points. Perhaps you can help me develop the discussion. 1. The osm-ph community. Who is the community? What characterize a PH OSMer? How do we map? What are the innovative ways we do to improve the map? Are the data users part of this community? Is the talk-ph list and discussions here a representative sample of the osm-ph community? 2. How do we use the data? Some sample of data useage we can illustrate. Maybe a ph brewed mapping application? Or other ways you have used the data? If there are any, please provide a link or description and a screenshot. 3. Issues and concerns. Why are we growing in some areas but not in others? How do you guage our relationship with other crowdsource mapping initiative in the country (google mapmaker, roadguide.ph, wikimapia)? 4. The future. How do you see the state of PH data in a year or two? What should be done to further improve and expand data coverage? If you any thoughts, just send them here or as a PM. Thanks! The ideal candidates for funding are from countries with a small OSM community, perhaps just a few mappers in total. They have made a significant start at mapping their city, either through imagery or with their own GPS, and are directly familiar with the process of OSM. They may have started communicating among themselves, and made plans and scoped out the process for their local district. But, the community is nowhere near critical mass, and they need the inspiration and support to take OSM to the next level. We need to act fast! State of the Map is just over 3 and a half months away, tickets and visas need to be arranged. Dear docsam, First off I want to mention that you are doing great work mapping Mindanao. I'll answer a few of your concerns. If you don't hear from anyone that means either your are doing it correctly or no one is around to check your edits. I suspect it is the former. :) I did corrected a few of your edits a few days ago. This is related to using the ref tag. Apologies for not informing you of my corrections. Here is my changeset: http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/changeset/8925161 I usually add a descriptive changeset comment so that other will understand what was edited. 1. i've been submitting data to osm but up to now i still dont have the confidence if im doing it right. no one is telling me if what im doing is right or not. maybe a local forum osm-ph shouls be created or maybe there is but im not aware of it. or atleast a personal mail to really direct to the person concerned the things that needs to be corrected. Yes this is true. Perhaps others can share their own experience on the point polygon conversion. 2. we have a vague standards as to the placement of the waypoints and what i noticed, not all waypoints uploaded form part of the map. most waypoints are later transformed into polygon. even the classifications of roads are a guessing game to me. JOSM is the offline tool while the edit tab or potlatch is the browser based editing tool. I personally use JOSM because it has more editing capabilities and I can edit data offline. Both editor has its own benefits and issues. 3. i believe that there are a lots of people who would like to contibute to osm since its an international site but theres no clear tutorial site. to name a few, like whats the difference of using josm and the osm edit tab portion? how to make polygons, what qualifies a waypoint to be a polygon? -- cheers, maning -- Freedom is still the most radical idea of all -N.Branden wiki: http://esambale.wikispaces.com/ blog: http://epsg4253.wordpress.com/ -- ___ talk-ph mailing list talk-ph@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ph

Sounds great so far. You might also want a small section on the particular challenges peculiar to the Philippines. Just off the top of my head: - The lack of satellite data (always good to plug that one). So we rely more heavily on contributions, especially in rural areas. - The different ways of subdividing areas. City / Barangay / Village etc. and how that maps onto the OSM categories - The different names for things. How do we mark a sari-sari store? (insert picture into slideshow) Convenience? Vulcanizing store (cue Spock joke ...). Those are a few issues that I remember from the discussions on this list. I think this is the sort of thing which would be interesting to others from outside: The quirks. [OSM-talk] The temporal dimension (was: Re: Overpass API: new version 0.6.93 ...)
[@newer=2011-08-01] restricts the data to only those data last edited after the given date. This is only possible in combination with another conditional. Why wasn't something like [@timestamp2011-08-01] used? Well, at first, because there is no [@older=..] or [@timestamp..] . By the way, to correct myself, it should be something like [@newer=2011-08-01T09:15:00Z], because the simplistic parser needs a full date. The [@older=..] in turn doesn't exist, because it doesn't make sense in the current state of affairs. See below. [@newer=..] shall have a humble look and feel, because it is a very humble solution. To spark the discussion, imagine the following data items: - Element A hasn't changed since January. - Element B has been re-uploaded without changes yesterday. - Element C has been deleted yesterday. - Element D has substantially changed its meaning yesterday such that it is now out of scope. (To make this clearer: think e.g. you are searching for bridges and D is a way that has been split such that one half is no longer a bridge.) - Element E has been created yesterday morning but then disappeared yesterday evening, due to a bad edit. Now what would you expect from the [@newer=24-hours-ago] operator to find? A good implementation should produce surely C and D, maybe E and/or B. Actually, Overpass API yields B and only B, which is unsatisfactory. The reason for this: At the moment, Overpass API represents at any moment the data as it would be visible in a fictional Planet.osm, patched from the last Planet.osm by the diff files applied so far. And a Planet.osm would also only show B. This is closely related to discussions of the type How do I find deleted elements?. What are other options? (Please mind: All of them are thoughts, not even vapour ware) Overpass API could become a full blown history server. This would allow to give sane answers to [@timestamp..], [@timestamp..], and a create a diff option, produce search results from a certain time in the past and a lot more of amazing thing. But this has at least four downsides: 1. This partly breaks with the OSM data model. For example, a way can change its geometry without getting literally changed itself: just move the underlying nodes. The OSM element doesn't recognize this, the database must recognize this for consistent data delivery. The way might for example have entered or left the bounding box you have searched for. The issue popped up at some time in a discussion about the undo features of Potlatch, but I don't have a link to that. Another thing is that such a server would mix CC-BY-SA and ODBL data at a certain time in the future, which is a unnecessary legal hassle. Most likely, I would be slow enough on development to roll out the software after the license change :) In any case, this may produce a flame war on details, which I exactly don't want to get the project into, and I'm not diplomat enough to avoid this. 2. Hourly, daily, weekly diffs are incompatible, and even the Planet.osm and minute updates need diligent analysis. Note that in all the diffs, multiple changes will be collapsed into a single diff. Thus, an element like E above might never appear on the server. I'm not sure whether the minute updates are guaranteed to contain all changes, but changes reverted in less than a minute might be acceptable to lose. The full history Planet.osm could replace an ordinary Planet.osm, but mind that it is an order of magnitude bigger. 3. This all could multiply the hardware requirements. I'm simply not sure what the current server can handle. For this reason, I started with the Planet.osm meta data, which already doubled the data amount from roughly 35 GB to roughly 65 GB. With history data, I expect rather 100 GB to 150 GB. The impact on the query times can probably be kept under control (if we keep the historic data apart from the current data), but the data updates in that case will become much slower. 4. And it will need a lot of programming effort. Just alone the necessary documentation to make clear all of the decisions necessary in point 1. and 2. takes weeks. Implementation and testing will be the same or even more effort, depending on how much tricks are necessary to keep the system responsive. While it is challenging, I don't see the massive demand in comparison to other features that would be postponed in that case. A second option would be to produce some kind of feed, where you need to subscribe to get changes. This can be realized quite easily, because the way and relation updater already receive some kind of internal feed to update their geometries from their members. So you subscribe with an arbitrary query, e.g. a bounding box or a certain tag or a combination of both, and get all changes concerning that query roughly every few hours, without the assertion of being complete. But I don't expect that much users would be interested in such a service

Re: [OSM-talk] How to start to remove non-CT compliant data..
It would indeed be great if we could use an arbitrary version of an object to continue to build upon. Now, I have to start all over on each object that was touched by somebody who didn't agree (yet) to the CTs, which is annoying, as it disrupts the entire history. Jo 2011/9/5 Ian Sergeant iserg...@hih.com.au I wrote: To address your question specifically, what happens to data placed in the public domain by the author on the wiki, who then specifically declines the CT? Russ Nelson nel...@crynwr.com wrote on 03/09/2011 01:34:09 PM: What problem does this solve? If data in this class is accepted as compliant with the CT then it obviously solves no problem. I think this is your point? Just repeating, like I have in all my emails, that I'm only proposing that the API grants the ability to hide/remove data whose author has specifically rejected the CT, allowing us to better manage the transition to a CT-compliant database. By allowing CT-compliant editors to modify and save CT-compliant earlier versions rather than CT-non-compliant later versions we avoid the possibility of generating more CT-non-compliant tainted data than we have already. The acceptance or otherwise of this peculiar class of data where the author has on the one hand said that anyone can do anything with their data, but later tried to retract that by declining the contributor terms is an interesting issue of policy. I can see both sides of the argument. However, I believe the changes I am suggesting will be of procedural value, regardless of how these policy issues are resolved. Re: [talk-au] Missing streets in Sydney
Someone wrote Yep. A one-way street mapped as a two-way street is better than nothing. To me this statement absoluetly defines the difference between people who just want to see lots of lines on the map and people who want to actually use the map for navigation. Many moons ago I was driving on the 17 mile drive, trying to get to a golf course for a round. I accidently took a wrong turn and then the pathetic Teleatlas maps tried to get me to turn up one way streets the wrong way, eight times in a row. I just turned off the unit and navigated by the sun (which is hard for us Aussies in the Northern Hemisphere). This experience (plus some others with the substandard sensis maps) convinced me that we really need up-to-date ACCURATE maps which match reality. In Canberra I think I've fixed up all the one way streets that were not so marked. When up in Queansland, I was on a left handed golf tour and on the way home the bus driver, at one of the stops, admitted he was new to the job and didn't know the way to the next hotel. Of course I was capturing gps traces at the time so I told him just turn left into Smith street and then take the next right at the T junction. Unfortunately I was using sensis mapping and when we got to the right turn, there was a no right turn sign. The whole bus laughed a lot at this useless computer technonoly and the bus driver in frustration just turned right anyway, nearly taking out the sign and a few pedestrians as well. There are so many other examples where near enough is good enough maps are just so dangerous but time does fix most things and eventually the planet will be surveyed properly and we will have usefull maps. I think 10 years may see Australia with good mapping. ___ Talk-au mailing list Talk-au@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-au

Does fixing the errors take several times longer than editing it from nothing? I think it does, yes. And in the meantime you have data that may be wrong. Personally, on the local scale where most OSM Australia mapping is up to, I struggle to see much benefit of having the vectors traced from imagery on a map over the raw imagery itself. The local visit can certainly add more details, (street names for a start) but it's damn rare that it will get a better overall layout positioning. Lot's of gps traces can be just as good, but that takes multiple visits on different days to get good averaging. I think this is a proposition that could probably do with more empirical evidence. Especially with the halcyon days of nearmap behind us. I do have roads and cycleways that I have many many GPS traces for the single way over multiple visits, and the divergence appears very limited. Of course GPS signals can lose it entirely occasionally with reflections, etc, but it isn't like the surveyor doesn't have the imagery as another arrow in their quiver. If things get displaced it isn't hard to highlight areas of possible concern and investigate the errors further. If after understanding the topology, on-the-ground changes, and any offset, the easiest way is to trace the imagery for a way, then that is an option still open to the surveyor. Any perceived time saving is illusory, when someone has to visit the area sooner or later anyway. Again, who cares? You are only responding to half an argument. Steve was saying that he can map 10x the area from imagery than I can from surveying in the same time, and advocating that as a benefit of imagery tracing. My response to that was that the time saving is illusory, because after he maps from the imagery, I still have to go there and survey it. Well, words to that effect anyway... Beside which, you're wrong. I've done a lot of mapping, and it takes the less time overall to do an area from good imagery first, then go fill in the details on the ground than to do it all from tracing. It also makes the ground visit quicker, As I said, I recognise there is a divergence of views here, including among people who have made substantial contributions to the map. Most of the views have been given a fair airing in the past, and I'm not expecting a new consensus here and now. However, I do, with respect, still disagree with you. As you say, time isn't the only consideration. I wouldn't want to be navigating anywhere important based on a map merely consisting of vectorised aerial imagery. IMO OSMers are the ones who should be having the adventures down the road that may or may not connect, may or may not be open to the public, etc, leaving our data consumers with the benefit of our endeavours with maps accurately reflecting what is on the ground. Re: [talk-au] Contribution review??
Hi Richard, Welcome to OSM. A few observations. Nearmap is no longer an acceptable source for OSM, since they do not allow traces from their imagery to be re-licensed. I notice at least one of your edits sourced nearmap, and that isn't allowed any more. If you were using Potlatch, perhaps you were using bing and didn't notice it? Using the name tag to describe the way or the amenity probably isn't best practice, it really should be the name of the way if it has one, and just left blank if not. Putting path connecting two streets, isn't the name, but you can put it in a note tag if you think the information is important. Same with the playground, etc. The name is what displays on the map as the label. You also don't need to put (dirt) in the name, instead you can use the surface tags, or tracktype tags. You don't need to put steps in the name, you can use highway=steps, or steps=yes. Apart from that, it looks good, and I look forward to grabbing my GPS and walking the Bungaroo Track soon. Ian. Re: [talk-au] Missing street signs in Sydney
Steve Bennett wrote Or maybe the difference between people who think all navigation takes place on four wheels and the rest of us. It's interesting that you choose to use the I presume to speak for lots of other people and imply that there are way more of us than there are or you approach. If you were to use a statistical approach to the issue, I firmly believe that you would find that a significant majority of people that need/use/pay-for accurate mapping, are in an area unfamilar to them and are either on foot or more likely on 4-wheels. In either case they will need street names, that need to be collected locally, and if on 4-wheels, then turn restrictions are vital for safety. Another point is that walkers and cyclists can easily and safely pull over and stop to consult the map and make sense of it compared to what they see around them. Motorists usually don't have this advantage and therefore it is critical that their maps must be completly accurate and up-to-date. I also think that cycle paths must be surveyed rather than traced, since it is vital to note any local issue that may catch a fast moving cyclist unawares. Fortunately, I believe Canberra has been expertly mapped is this regard. Therefore my stance is that any map that has roads without the turn restrictions or correct names (as shown on the street sign) should be considered (at best) just as good as google, teleatlas navteq sensis etc, etc, etc. (and that, IMNSHO,is not not very good at all. /dismount SB ___ Talk-au mailing list Talk-au@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-au

[Talk-at] Gehsteige / Linienbündel / Micromapping (war: Gehsteige ....)
Guten Tag! Gestern (So, 4. -- Liebe Grüße, Boris ___ Talk-at mailing list Talk-at@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-at

Would that be maptiler? I've got a dual quad-core Xeon Mac Pro with 14 gb of ram so a parallelized version would be a must. :) You first need to set up gdal and gdal python bindings. You also need PIL for the antialias mode which offers the best tradeoffs between quality and speed for resizing methods. gdal2tiles is reportedly significantly slower then it could be when compaired to some non-public tools that do the same work. Just for reference, I had gdal2tiles running for 1-2 weeks on my 6 core CPU when doing the low quality surrey images and estimated it would take 1 year on my 3 core athelon II for the 200 GB+ high quality version I'll have to give it a shot and see how long it takes to process some portion of my GeoTiff.

oota ___ Talk-ja mailing list Talk-ja@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ja ___ Talk-ja mailing list Talk-ja@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ja
