Hi Parveen, After the database import did you run sudo /etc/init.d/renderd restart ? Do that then visit the localhost location again, at which point you should be able to see the rendering begin. On my netbook I can run top to see renderd using 100%+ I've followed the instructions through and they worked perfectly. The complete set of package names is: libapache2-mod-tile renderd openstreetmap-mapnik-stylesheet-data osm2pgsql openstreetmap-postgis-db-setup If you use apt-get install, you only need to specify libapache2-mod-tile as the package depends and recommends the other packages and so apt-get will automatically install the other packages too. But to process the .pbf file I have to log in into the postgres using following commmands $sudo -s #su postgres That is probably because you didn't specify your username during the configuration as being allowed to access the db. You can use the script install-postgis-osm-user.sh to allow a user afterwards to access the db gis which is used by osm2pgsql and renderd. Error messages of renderd will be printed in the syslog. You can check for errors and see if everything started correctly there. After logging into postgres file processed otherwise there was some Indentation error. hi Kai, Thanks a lot for this, it seems to be working well for me. I've got a question, although I accept that it might be a osm2pgsql query. I followed the instructions and imported Turkey into my db - this worked fine and I was happily rendering maps of the country. Since then I have used the same osm2pgsql command to import Bulgaria and Romania, but this seems to be causing issues: At the moment, only northern Romania is rendering as expected - for Turkey and Bulgaria I'm only seeing either pre-rendered tiles or new tiles based on nothing more than the coastline data. As far as I can tell, the only data currently in my db is for northern Romania. How best to check this? Is there a way to remove the pre-rendered tiles and create new ones from the contents of my db? Is there a different command I should be running to append data to an existing database? Thanks again, Joseph On 9 October 2011 23:13, Kai Krueger kakrue...@gmail.com wrote: Hello everyone, with the recent need to crack down on tile scrapers and apps to not over tax the main OSM tileservers and hosting, there has been a lot of talk trying to convince people to set up their own tileserver. Although for smaller areas hardware requirements aren't too bad, they quickly go up beyond what can be handled by a standard desktop computer. You can simply delete those files and they will automatically get rerendered the next time you view them. You can also touch the planet import time stamp file (unfortunately I can't remember the exact location and name of the file atm). mod_tile checks the time stamp of the rendered tiles. If it is older than the time stamp of the planet import, it will assume the data has changed and attempt to rerender the tiles. I have seen that you appear to need to restart renderd (sudo /etc/init.d/renderd restart) after a new import, as it otherwise appears to still use old data (It is kind of odd, so I might have the wrong impression here). However, what you are trying to do is as far as I know not supported by osm2pgsql. Although it seems to be a much requested feature, I don't think osm2pgsql currently handles importing of multiple extracts. The --append option doesn't really do what you would think it does. Osm2pgsql can currently either import a fresh extract, deleting the previous copy of your db, or it can append diff files. It can't append a second extract. What you could potentially do is to change the extract file into a change file by changing the xml header and inserting a modified tag at the right place. However diff processing is currently one or two orders of magnitude slower than initial import mode, so doing that is likely to be prohibitively expensive. It is possible that one could catch the errors in slim mode and then only do the expensive diff processing for those node / ways that are duplicate in the extracts. Interesting, although I think this is beyond the limits of my OSM skills. Unfortunately Austria seems to be beyond the capabilities of my netbook; an import without --slim gives the error: Node cache size is too small to fit all nodes. You will likely not find that error message on google yet, as if I am not mistaken, I only commited that error message two days ago. The default Ram cache size is 800Mb. You can increase it with the -C parameter of osm2pgsql. But given that your netbook probably doesn't have that much ram, I am not sure increasing that option is such a good idea. Given that you can't fit Austria into 800Mb, I suspect you are using the 32bit version of osm2pgsql. It defaults to the old (for extracts inefficient) cache allocation strategy. You can try using the --cache-strategy option and set it to either optimized or sparse. That should be more efficient for extracts than the default method. In the optimized option, you might run out of virtual memory on 32 bit though. But you might have troubles with Austria on a netbook anyway, as it might still be too resource intense. Am trying to re-import Turkey now, then onwards with bits of Europe! If it all works out do you mind if I do a bit of wiki fiddling on your instructions? No go ahead and improve the instructions Thanks again, Joseph ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk
Re: [OSM-talk] Jerusalem name tag - Mediation
Arabic *and* Hebrew are the official languages of Israel. You can see that also the Jerusalem Municipality website is in Arabic and Hebrew ( English) [1]. Hebrew is locally considered to be the primary language. While Arabic is also an official one, Hebrew clearly takes precedence. The Jerusalem emblem contains the name only in Hebrew. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emblem_of_Jerusalem You didn't explicitely state it but: Do you oppose having יְרוּשָׁלַיִם - القُدس used as the name? Yes, I oppose to have a double name because I would like the node to represent the de-facto capital of Israel which is a Jewish state, whose primary language is Hebrew. I believe that the current dispute can easily be solved with introduction of appropriate tags which will clarify any disambiguity. Please consider my proposal outlined below. I think what is really missing from current OSM rules is the precise meaning of the tag capital. The dictionary definition is seat of government, which doesn't consider recognition but is rather a property attached to a city by a state. Still, the issue of recognition is important to many people so OSM should reflect that. Capitals can be de-facto (when the city physically contains the seats of government) or only proclaimed (which is a necessary condition for a city to be called capital in the first place). Our situation is as follows: 1) Jerusalem is a de-facto, not recognized capital of Israel. 2) Al-Quds (East Jerusalem) is not de-facto, not recognized capital of Palestine (but capital nevertheless because it was proclaimed so by the PLO). Please note that they explicitly talk about East Jerusalem. My proposal therefore includes the introduction of the tags 1) capital:recognized, type:binary, default value: yes. 2) capital:de-facto, type:binary, default value: yes. There will be two nodes: Node 1: name=ירושלים name:en=Jerusalem place=city capital=yes is_in=Israel capital:recognized=no capital:de-facto=yes The node will be placed west of the 1949 armistice line and west of the Old City of Jerusalem. Node 2: name=القُدس name:en=East Jerusalem place=city capital=yes is_in=Palestine?(will be chosen by the local community there) capital:recognized=no capital:de-facto=no The node will be placed east of the 1949 armistice line and east of the Old City of Jerusalem. Please note that this will be in accordance with Wikipedia articles on Jerusalem, East Jerusalem, and Israel. I think Wikipedia in this case represents an important source because they are driven by consensus, similar to OSM. In fact, they had lengthy discussions about the topic[1,2]: [1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Jerusalem/capital [2] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Israel_Palestine_Collaboration/Discussion_archive/Jerusalem_as_capital ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Re: [OSM-talk] Jerusalem name tag - Mediation
Like all things OSM, there are at least three answers - what the wiki says, what plant.osm has and how renders behave. A few examples from planet.osm: http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/node/256423505 Name = Nicosia, capital = yes, is_in = Cyprus Northern Cypress also claims this as a capital. Note - the name is in English - not Turkish or Greek. http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/node/1147314253 name = 台北市 (Taipei), capital = yes, is_in = Taiwan China claims Taiwan is not a country so a relation like: http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/relation/449220 seems to be controversial. http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/node/448726107 name = Prishtinë, is_in:country = Kosovo, capital = yes Kosovo is not universally recognized. To summarize - the name= can be in English, mixed languages, or local. You can use the capital=yes on capitals recognized by only one country, or a handful, or many. The relation of capital=yes and country can be established by relation, by in_in:country or not at all. I'm not arguing there shouldn't be a standard, but I am pointing out OSM is hardly consistent. Angesprochen werden sollen v.a. ___ Talk-at mailing list Talk-at@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-at

[Talk-ca] Motorways tagging at ferry terminals/boarders
There are two different and conflicting ways of tagging motorways at ferry terminals. The first of these, as shown at the Horseshoe Bay terminal http://osm.org/go/WJQnahqdV- is of having one way where there are many lanes and tagging as highway=motorway. The second, shown at Swartz Bay http://osm.org/go/WJEP9q90r- is drawing the lanes as highway=service and terminating the motorway when it stops being one. The same issue applies at border crossings, except for the ones I've looked at the choice is between highway=motorway and highway=primary. I prefer the Swartz Bay scheme because it is more reflective of the reality on the ground. I was just looking at these terminals last night! Speaking of ferry terminals, I've been adding more detail to the Tsawwassen ferry terminal. http://goo.gl/2vzKx There is a situation where there is an overhead walkway, which I've mapped as a building with layer = 1, with some roads underneath, then on top of the walkway is an elevated road (layer 2) leading to the upper vehicle loading ramp. How shall I fix it so the building is above the road? I've had other situations where roads pass under or through buildings and it never renders the way I like, such as hotel entrances and vehicle inspection buildings. -- Matthew Buchanan -- Kamloops, BC On 18 October 2011 00:14, Paul Norman penor...@mac.com wrote: There are two different and conflicting ways of tagging motorways at ferry terminals.
