[Talk-transit] Bus stops not in naptan
Was there an agreement reached on how to tag bus stops that aren't in naptan? I verified 2 last night when out walking that I could see on the Mapnik layer only to find when I got back that they were two that I added in the dim and distant past (last December), so I'd verified my own additions. It's probable that no buses use that route at present, though I may be wrong. Holland Road, Little Clacton. Nodes 317709575 and 317709576 I'm guessing perhaps physically_present=yes? Just tag is per the normal OSM methods. physically_present=yes means nothing on a non-naptan stop, since its assumed to exist by merely being in the database. 2009/9/18 Ed Loach e...@loach.me.uk: Was there an agreement reached on how to tag bus stops that aren't in naptan? Re: [talk-ph] please revert this user's edit (Re: Fwd: [OSM-talk] RR8 - Possible International Vandal(assistance required in various countries))
Regarding cleaning up and/or removing some tainted data, it could be a tricky one. I did some cleanup in Ashton Fields in Calamba (and added landuse and a road stub for future reference); Ponte Verde near the STAR tollway interchange in Santo Tomas (where there used to be some edits from maning); most of downtown Tiaong and the nearby market area (which can be recovered by making an actual GPS trace in the area, more if necessary); Dolores, Quezon (where I could go and make some GPS traces, if my schedule isn't that busy); and the Avida residences in the Tayabas/Lucena boundary area (someone had previously made an edit over the area). I also made some cleanup in the Bicol area - along the stretch of the Pan-Philippine Highway (specifically in Naga City, where it is hard to edit when using the online editor - epecially if one's computer is very slow and 8 years old and above), and some places in Albay. The problem with some of Anthony's edits is that they have too many nodes in a certain way, which is probably bad for routing. The problem with some of Deck's edits is that some of the edits he made were probably done previously by other contributors (which is the other problem caused by some of Anthony's edits). If we are to activiate the revert script on those edits, madadamay ang ibang mga edits (other edits will be affected by it). For me, It would be best to retrace, remove or transfer tags, then delete the questionable nodes and ways, if there were some previous edits placed in that area, so that the older (and probably less tainted) edits will be there, although under a new node/way identification number. BTW, we're lucky that we don't have to deal with people like RR8. Instead, all we need now is some understanding and consensus. ___ talk-ph mailing list talk-ph@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ph

Yup, we did seminars/workshops because only few people knew OSM in Davao and some who are aware of it don't know how to edit the map. Maybe in Manila's case, you don't need seminars/workshops because you have many experienced contributor in your area. Maybe a pre-mapping party meeting will do to organize the teams. And in our case most of the participants who attended the seminars did not attend the mapping party and those who attended the workshop all joined the mapping party. Which of the both routes is wrong? or are they both valid? Which one would you prefer, then? I have to admit to getting a little confused looking at this initially, but it WOULD seem that the route IS legal. However, the slip road being used has obviously not been designed to handle traffic FROM the other side of the road. Initially I just thought the direction was wrong on the slip - and then I remembered to start driving on the wrong side of the road ;) I had a run around two customer sites yesterday. Both I know the route from here and don't need the sta nav, but I have never been across country between the two ( Worksop and Stockport ... ) so typed the post code in and followed the route. As I was going up the M1 and then across country, it became obvious that I had to take the instructions with even more of a pinch of salt than usual ... Bear right, and take exit often needed a little more information, such as keep to outside lane, or take inside lane. On at least one occasion I was having to change lanes late because of strange instructions - or no instructions at all, such as getting out of the inside lane because it did not go straight one! The google map is a good example of where a single way for a road does not provide enough information for the route planner to produce a SAFE route. This is another area where 'micromapping' may be very much more preferable to trying to add routing detail to a single way? Although in the case posted, the instructions keep to outside lane and wait for clear traffic in the three lanes coming the other way could probably be inferred, but I doubt that stopping the the fast lane would be appreciated by other drivers? -- Lester Caine - G8HFL - Contact - http://lsces.co.uk/wiki/?page=contact L.S.Caine Electronic Services - http://lsces.co.uk EnquirySolve - http://enquirysolve.com/ Model Engineers Digital Workshop - http://medw.co.uk// Firebird - http://www.firebirdsql.org/index.php ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Re: [OSM-talk] [OSM-dev] Footnav - new 3D project aimed at countryside users
I'm glad to see that this project is moving on and especially that it's using Qt :) However, I get a compile error with revision 2: Me too. In SRTM.h there is: #include GL.h But in maths.h I see this instead: #ifdef __APPLE__ #include gl.h #else #include GL/gl.h #endif Quite inconsistent, considering in both cases probably the same header should be included :). On my system I have only GL/gl.h but not GL.h An oversight, not deliberate :-) Anyway it's fixed now. I've also fixed a few things with the latest revision, for instance if you load in a SRTM height file it places you in the centre of the bounding box. Also you jump to location using lat/lon, not UK Grid Ref, which should (though not tested) make it internationally compatible. However don't expect great usability just yet, I'm focusing more on the backend for the moment. The interface is just enough to allow testing. Next thing will be to display OSM data overlaid on the SRTM, then after that, lighting effects (perhaps using system time to work out the actual position of the sun). I'm just following the release early, release often idea ;-) Nick ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

I believe the usage of the building should be explicitly defined, so station should be used. Re: [talk-au] post code boundaries
I just figured out a quicker way to do postcode imports, especially in the larger postcode areas that you can't easily download the area in one go because it would exceed one of the download restrictions, although I'm not sure if this is possible in the stable version of JOSM or not. I load the osm file and convert it to a GPX layer, then I right click on the GPX layer and tell it to download along that track. ___ Talk-au mailing list Talk-au@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-au

2009/9/18 Ian Wills swani...@gmail.com: Tell me about it! Having worked for the post office in my youth, I can tell you that Postcode boundaries are often idiosyncratic. The boundary represents an easy way for the postie to walk, not a rational suburb boundary. In my own case, when I moved into my house 15 years ago it was in one suburb (sensible) but the council redefined the boundaries to match the Postcode causing much confusion, including with the council which sent rate notices with the old property address to the new postcode address. I once lived in a house where the suburb boundary ran down the middle of the road, from memory the mail was one suburb, yet pizza companies and I think phone companies classified the place in the adjacent suburb and fun was had by all. ___ Talk-au mailing list Talk-au@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-au

[talk-au] Gatton, QLD
I spent a bit of time driving around Gatton the other day. There are some roads there now and because it was night, I didn't catch many street names. This is the first town I've done from scratch so I don't know if I've done ok or done a royal mess. Anyway, I'm being bugged by the roundabouts which don't seem to cooperate for me in potlatch, josm nor Mercator. If someone would like to fix anything I've broken in Gatton including a few missing roundabouts that'd be great, especially as I'm away from home and my computer for a bit. If this is helpful, I might pop in a few more missing towns in my area as I come across them (can't always guarantee all street names). I added my thoughts to a wiki page on this topic about importance for areas that don't have sat imagery and are more or less a blank canvas. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Starting_with_a_Blank_Map I came to the conclusion that putting streets in, even without names is very valuable because other people with local knowledge can fill in the blanks without needing a GPS, at least that's how it'd work in theory :) As for roundabouts, they're a bit of hassle and I'd love for JOSM to do it better but any way as things are I either draw a square and then add mid points between the 4 corners to turn it into a roundabout, or I draw a triangle and hit shift+o, neither is perfect but perfection isn't generally achievable anyway. ___ Talk-au mailing list Talk-au@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-au
Re: [talk-au] Our own satellite imagery?
I received a reply about the cost to rent a plane, about 230GBP for one hour and the airport was close to the place they were photographying and it was mostly a PR stunt. Due to the sideways angle they are having difficulty rectifying images and that side of things is being worked on however companies doing this on a professional basis have a custom fit out of a plane with gyro stabalising mounts and super expensive medium format or bigger film sizes. I was pointed to this link, which I've already seen and forgot about, but it seems sat imagery is cheaper than trying to do it by plane: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Aerial_photography_funding_appeals#How_much_does_it_cost About 12-17$ per sq km, US$ I'm guessing, although AU$ is up to 87c again. If we could raise the funds needed the only question then is what do we want imagery of? That's for the two metre resolution - a plane would probably give better than 50cm resolution using a decent camera. Need to find some trainee pilots who need the flight time, and split the cost of the plane. Not sure how you'd rig the camera though. I'd vote for getting a selection of regional towns - population 5000, with a reasonable number of smallers towns located close by (well, close in AU terms - within say 100km. Vic examples would be Hamilton/Casterton/Portland area, maybe Naracoorte or Renmark in SA). I think the approach has to be to kick off with the larger town - we do initial tracing to lay down the core road grid and style, and work out a way of getting someone in that town to start tracing and naming (thus no GPSr entry cost for the local mappers), and then work out how to publicise the fact. I'd try and use the local papers to do so - a quick article about how OSM is paying for high res aerial, and now we need to make some decent maps would kick it off. The regional papers would publish that sort of thing no probs (although you might need to target the few remaining independents rather than the Rural/APN papers). There's also the Blokes Shed groups - retired blokes who tinker, who could probably benefit from the exercise walking around the town... although they could probably do most of it from memory. If the satellite is good enough and cheap enough, most of these town might only be 20 sq km, so buying the sat imagery is possibly more viable cost wise. Either way, the big issue in Australia is trying to get people invloved in the regional areas, as it's just not feasible for us city folk to leg it 400km on the weekend to map a town. (That said, I've discovered that jumping onto the V-Line train early morning with the bike, and getting off at an unmapped town is both viable and cheap - a lot cheaper than driving there. You can get through a small town in a day easily on a bike. Just make sure you know when the last train back home is...) OSM routing in Berlin Why doesn't OSM ever tell me to take a 270 degree turn into oncoming traffic on a 6-lane highway and get onto the motorway_link on the other side? Two possible reasons: 1. There is a restriction missing at the Google map or a traffic sign missing in reality. When i look at the picture, i can see just a dotted line in the middle and no traffic sign, which forbids the 270 degree turn (I haven't looked inside OSM, wether OSM has a turn restriction set here). 2. Depending on the attributs, OSM is showing the faster alternative. The result can only be identical if only the real length of the route is used as parameter for the router. If any travel time model is used, the results will never be 100% identical for complex routes, as long as the traveltime models differ in details.
Schloss-Strasse hat dann also insgesamt 6 s.
