I do that sometimes. Clicking on the HTML of course opens the editor,

SOT: beta testing

2001-12-19 Thread Alastair Scott

A very interesting article on beta testing of commercial software:

http://www.betanews.com/article.php3?sid=1007600207

Lots and lots of good points there; the interviewee is as keen as I am
on tools which make everything visible to everyone.

(As you can probably guess I'm not impressed with the way RITLabs does
beta testing*; it's too haphazard and the _testers_ cannot see how, and
if, their data are being handled which, in my case, is offputting.
Witness the IMAP closure problem, which RITLabs told me was duplicatable
and would be fixed yet has been hanging around for three builds so far!)

Alastair

* that said, very few get it anywhere near right; StarOffice, with a
Sun-hosted newsgroup and the Sun staff posting responses to that
newsgroup (rather than privately to the testers), was not bad.

AS A very interesting article on beta testing of commercial software:

A nice read. :-)

AS Lots and lots of good points there; the interviewee is as keen as I am

AS (As you can probably guess I'm not impressed with the way RITLabs
AS does beta testing*; it's too haphazard and the _testers_ cannot
AS see how, and if, their data are being handled which, in my case,
AS is offputting.

I guess that this is as a result of a lack of good *consistent*
communication which is my main problem with the process.

I don't see the point of releasing a beta with spanking new features
which aren't intuitive, and then there's no instruction on how to use
the new feature. How is it supposed to be tested then? Or is the
obscurity some way of straining out who tests the feature since the
more savvy will be able to 'figure it out'. :-)

I hope this is being construed as constructive criticism and not
whining.

Communication is the main problem to me. Otherwise I don't see much
scope for improvement considering the company size and resources. I do
think that there are also a lot of excellent beta testers subscribed
to this group who could do a lot more if given a chance and are
communicated with more effectively. I don't know what's happening on
private channels so I can't speak for that. As far as I'm concerned
private notes should be minimised so that all can benefit from the
exchanges, but I can understand a beta tester resorting to private
notes when no responses are forthcoming to important queries made
publicly on the list.

I do also realize that the developers need time to debug and develop
but there's that balance that needs to be struck with communication on
the other hand.

AS Witness the IMAP closure problem, which RITLabs told me was
AS duplicatable and would be fixed yet has been hanging around for
AS three builds so far!)

It's likely that they're working on a solution but haven't found it
yet. But again, no communication of this.

It's a case of submitting your problem and hoping it's heard and
fixed. This has been working for me. We're being heard. No doubt about
that.:-) They do listen and will fix serious bugs and implement
important and useful enhancements ... in time. So, I hope with all of
this Ritlabs and all who care to read my opinion here, realize that
despite my negative slant in this message, I do have very positive
views on The Bat! and its development over the years. :-)

AS * that said, very few get it anywhere near right;

Configuration Dialog for Common Folders

2001-12-19 Thread Allie C Martin

Hi all,

It would appear that the common folders need their own configuration
dialog, perhaps in the configuration panel (Preferences), since I have
no way of adjusting the delay time before messages are flagged as
read. What about the 'compress all folders upon exit' option,
the 'mark message as read only when only when opened in a separate
window' option as well as 'Home directory' options? These would be
needed as well.

Thread by Subject/Sort by Date Obscures New Messages

2001-12-19 Thread Ron Mura

Version 1.54 beta 15 introduced this change:

[*] Oldest messages are used as thread roots for threading by
subject/from/to

This causes problems when both threading by subject and sorting by
received date (in descending order) are used. Typically when you have
a folder sorted by date you want to see new messages at the top,
and that's the way it worked until beta 15.

Now, if there is another message in the folder with the same subject,
the new message gets buried under it. This can be a particular
inconvenience in folders with large number of messages. I've to use
View/Display/Only Unread messages just to find some new messages.

Suggestion: If a folder is sorted by received date or created date in
descending order, do not use the oldest message as the thread root,
but rather use the NEWEST message as the root.

That's right.

What about the 'compress all folders upon exit' option,

MM as I remember, this option was already added to Account properties.

This is on a per account basis. I don't think it can be applied to the
common folders unless, the common folders are made to inherit the
settings of the default account which wouldn't be desirable for want
of control of those common folders.

Hmmm. I see what you mean.

Before this new feature was introduced, I used to sort messages in
descending order of received time and the oldest message would start
the thread with the messages getting newer as I go down. This is my
personal preference and it works for me. Finding new messages doesn't
require digging since I just use the 'go to next unread message'
navigation option (CTRL-]).

I don't believe in imposing style on others and having the oldest
message *always* at the top of the thread, no matter the sorting order
chosen by dates (this is what appears to be the case after testing)
seems like a bad move to me. Are there those who would wish to sort in
*ascending* order of date and yet wish for the oldest message to be at
the top?

The problem is there is no account properties dialogue for the common

My general practice is to sort by created time, with the newest on
top. But when I toggle to threaded view to put a message in context,
it seems logical to me that the thread be headed by the message which
began it. As a thread grows, there are answers to third generation
messages which are later than answers to 5th generation messages. What
does the sorting do when there are multiple messages with identical
date and time from different branches of the thread of you try to
display from bottom up. Admitted this won't happen often, but since it
can happen the code would have to deal with it.

JW The *** MOST ANNOYING *** problem (to me) is the pause or system
JW hang after checking mail. It last about 3 seconds, but it has been
JW around since at least Beta 13 or 14.

I almost never have this problem (using Win2k SP2). The only time I
see it, is if I have a (low priority) task in the background which
takes up almost all CPU time, such as compressing a DivX, and the mail
server is responding very slowly at the same time. It seems as if The
Bat is then starved for CPU, and responds quite badly to events (but
it doesn't hang up totally, however).

I'm not sure how The Bat processes WinSock events, but if it is via
the (old-fashioned) system of processing windows messages in the main
WindowProc, then this could be the problem. However, switching to a
fully asynchronous WinSock event model is not an easy task... Not to
mention incompatible with older versions of Windows.

Do other people with the pause problem have CPU-consuming tasks
running in the background?

Cheers,

Sorry, I have no understading for this policy. Should I warn the poor
folks on the German lists that the new version contains known bugs but
has been released nevertheless (if you do deicde to make this fatal
marketing mistake)? Please fix the bugs first, and then release. I can
with no good conscience recommend a buggy program.

I guess I can't even imagine what is about to happen. Are we talking
about releasing a version 1.54? If this is true it's crazy. 1.54 is
not yet ready for prime time!

Are you talking about releasing this as 2.0? If that is true, TheBat!
is about to self destruct.

The 1.54 Beta has great promise. I see lots of good things starting to
fall into place. BUT it still has too many incomplete additions and
rough edges. Common folders are going to be good, but right now they
are not there yet. The same is true of lots of things happening here.

People who don't like betas until they are pretty solid would do well
to move to 1.54 by now. People who resist all betas will be very
unhappy with 1.54, because it will be clear that it is really just a
beta not a perfected thing.

Don't do it. Please.

Can anybody made some additional tests

2001-12-19 Thread Alexander Leschinsky

Hello tbbeta,

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Preferences panel is hidden by The Bat! main window.

  Steps to reproduce the bug:

  Click Options, Preferences, System, Browse.
The focus is no longer on The Bat! Minimise by right clicking on The
Bat! icon in system tray and selecting minimise. The Preferences
dialog and directory tree window then appear.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

I never can reproduce or construct reasonable opinion - How it can be
on single system (I haven't same reports and see nothing here)...

Source OS - Win-98 1998 (as I can reconstruct), tested platforms - 98
SE (but in _this_ case differences _was_ supposed meaningless)... Can
first 98 build owners see at this problem?

(I _know about _a lot_ annoyable bugs - bug they are known,
reproducable... This locking - no...)

  Confirmed. :(
Doesn't work in Beta/14 as well.

Just tested it from home on Windows 98 4.10. A Russian. Closed all

If you have TB! icon in a task bar instead of system tray you are not
able to minimize TB! main window by right-clicking on it - menu just not

You can return to TB! by pressing ESC twice. :)

That bug has been around for ages... for as far back as I can remember.
