When I launched it from the desktop shortcut it worked fine.

Similar observation here:
I took the MSI installer, TB showed the initial splashscreen and hung up.
No entry in TaskManager to terminate the hanging app. Closing it via red

The Bat! 3.99.24 *.EML importing issue

2007-09-05 Thread Charlene Ferrara
Dear List members,

I have seen some broken filters since the installation of The Bat!
3.99.24 release candidate and wanted to do some more testing on it. I haven't
changed my filters and wanted to find out more and opened my old
compressed archive of mails, containing various emails from all kind of
senders that once were exported as *.EML and tried to import the whole
bunch. First thing is, that the old known bug of a beta from a long time
ago number 000 can't be found nagged me. Renaming the first *.EML-file
to *.txt cured the symptom. But why is TB stopping the import action? If
the first email can't be found, why not proceeding to number two?
Second issue is, that the number of emails TB can import at once seems to
be limited. My archive contained 6000 mails and TB didn't succeed to
import them. Sliced in better manageable chunks of several hundred it was
pure bliss: some seconds and I was done. But the repeated action of
marking the digestible amount of mails is a bit tedious.
As a third issue came refiltering. TB refused to filter the mails. The
hourglass an an emptied main window was the dissatisfying result. I think
with a dual core and some 30 minutes of time this work could have been
done.

At the moment it seems to me that the way TB handles importing from *.EML
is not exactly what I would characterize as technically mature.

As in the last few betas which were unusable for me, I noticed that the
cursor has its own life and mind:
I hit reply or F4, place the cursor right behind the piece of text I wish
to reply to and click the LMB. What happens? The cursor goes all the way
down to the end of the text, which is a bit arduous in the long run,
especially if you have long mails with text over several pages.
In .03 and all versions before the cursor could be placed wherever you
wanted in replying. Is there a way to get the more comfortable behaviour
back?

[*] Better and faster way to shutdown when some tasks are in progress

My TB stuck in deep mud after having sent some mails.
Steps to reproduce:
Send some mails with small attachments, so you have time to RMB the tray
icon and chose alt+x to see the new dialog I mentioned before.
Close that window and watch the CC. It seems the confirmation of the
sending status does not reach TB, mail after mail ist listed as active
task. And more: TB behaves as before and seems to not react on the cancel
and OK button. Each and every mail ist listed as if it was still in
sending queue. I thought that I got bitten by Mary Bull's effect, that she
can't send a mail with TB, even after reverting to a previous version. But
no, all mails were properly sent -which I could see in the log after
restarting TB. (I closed it with windows task manager before)

Hi Maxim Masiutin,

Sunday, April 15, 2007
you let us know -possibly edited- :

[*] Backup archives larger than 2G bytes are now properly handled

Creating a backup (with OTFE enabled Bat) that is PW-protected took ages and
was not completed. My biggest folder has about 1 GB and TB tried
unavailingly to back it up. I gave TB over 1 hour of time on my PC.
TB did not proceed but was busily using RAM and CPU time and the progress
bar was not moving forward. TB seemed to choke on that folder. The progress
bar was nearly at 95% (estimated) during all of that time.
I have a dual core CPU and think that the PW-encryption is causing this
hang-up: If I choose not to protecd the new backup-file all is well and the
time to create a complete backup is much shorter. My full backup file now
is 2,2 GB at size.

BTW: previous versions didn't restore the full content of an address book,
phone numbers and birthdays weren't remembered. Has this been improved
also?

Thank you, we will be working on password-protected backups. They still are
 memory-hungry.
Thank you, this is good news. I often wondered why it is so easy doing a
backup without PW and impossible with that option. My WinRAR needs only a
few minutes to scramble the created *.tbk file. Good to know that work is
in progress.

BTW: previous versions didn't restore the full content of an address book,

Is there any bugtracker entry that did list this problem? I didn't know
about the problem with phone numbers.
not that I know... I remember that some time ago this issue came up while
discussing the backup-situation.
If a complete restore is done, all supplemetary information beside the
email-address ist not being restored. Phone numbers, all information on
every tab except general are AFAIK lost. At least the Private ones are.

Although in Firefox it automatically converts:

 to

 http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hand-Fu%C3%9F-Mund-Krankheit

Correct, but if Umlauts are allowed and displayed within TB, why would
anyone want thet the link breaks? It should be working anyway, either with
%C3%9F or ß. Why doesn't TB convert if it is unable to create the link?
It should be fixed.

How did you expect The Bat! to find out that SS should be handled as
unicode when transferred to TB! thru the clipboard that changed that
 to be 1 byte code?
I just think that the link should work, eitherway with or without
transformation. The blue underlining should stop at the first blank space
and not within the address so that the recipient can easy handle it.

(Sorry, that I demand just pissed me off...)

Can anybody confim that The Bat! hangs with 50% CPU utilization when

50% seems to me that one core is running on full usage and the second
 one is idle.

So I guess no one without a dual core can confirm this :-)
I had a dual core running with Vista and TB 3.98.06 and saw no hanging of
one core. TB worked as usual, except the certificate nagscreen.

I had Vista Home Premium installed for two days and encountered no such
problems. I went back to XP MCE nevertheless, but TB isn't to blame for
that. No confirmation.
What is a bit nasty anyway is that naggings screen when connecting to Gmail

If you have AVs on exit, than you should have unempty ex_log.txt.

I should, I understand that. But I do have AVs on every exit and there is
 _no_ such file.

Hi Ian A. White,

you let us know -possibly edited- :
There is an issue with an error on exit, however it only happens if I
send or receive an e-mail. I can start The Bat! and then close it and
no problems. If I start The Bat!, send or receive a message and then
close it, I get an alert asking if I want to send a report to MS. When
I close that (and I have to do that twice because the dialog comes up
twice, I find another alert telling me that there is a

 RTE 216 @ 00404A0E

This RTE and address are the same every time I do this.

Confirmed. This is annoying, I found a faster way to exit TB: I click on
debug instead and get no further dialogues -if I don't then I see the
same as you do.

Sometimes a little guidance would be quite welcome. Endless AVs, no

sonsequent handling by TB itself. Wouldn't it be good if every

The AV when scrolling smilies is still present; see attached. It

Confirmed in parts.

The only way to resolve is to forcibly close TB with CTRL-ALT-DLT

My copy shows up two or three half-drawn AVs and TB closes itself, no
task manager needed over here. Last sign of life is the tray icon, and
that vanishes on mouse over.

To reproduce the steps I only have to click on smilies and wait some
seconds.

If I disconnect my laptop from the network and just click and read
emails, The Bat! seems to try to connect to the server every seconds

of memory. If I stop using The Bat!, it will eventually stop trying
to connect and the amount of memory decrease quickly to the normal

As long as I ain't connected, TB tries to connect to IMAP, but does not
slow down or use constantly more and more resources. It just keeps on
trying without negative effects.

Hi Thomas Fernandez,

Friday, August 4, 2006
you let us know -possibly edited- :

No. I find it mildly annoying, but not a big issue. I think DUNners
are in the minority now (I hope to leave that crowd soon), and I have
my workaround: Watch the CC before before deleting a task, and if
there is only this one, just initiate another one first.

You learned to live with imperfection, you accommodated to a mildly
annoying thing. This may be the way for you, which I can perfectly live
with, that's understood, but maybe the better way would be that TB would
do that job right, isn't it?

CF There are at least two places within TB where one can set options
CF to either disconnect or not after mail retrieval, and I have
CF forbidden to disconnect. So it is obviously a bug, isn't it?

It's not a bug unless someone confirms it. - Any secondors?

For an IMAP connection, yes. But not for your POP issue.

Re: The Bat! 3.81.13 Beta is now available

2006-08-03 Thread Charlene Ferrara
Hi Simon,

Thursday, August 3, 2006
you let us know -possibly edited- :

I do still get an AV when scrolling the smiley list in full from top
to bottom (attached). the difference now is that before this used to
crash TB completely with multiple AV's. Now, acknowledging the AV
produced returns you to your mail and the smiley list. I can then
scroll back to the top, to the bottom and repeat the same AV... and so on.

My bat is slightly more creative: I just tried it the way you describe
and had to scroll several times up and down, closing the smilies page
and reopening it again to see my own little AV:

Access violation at address 007676FF in module 'thebat.exe'. Read of address
 0014.

I couldn't get out of this circle, every confirmation brought up the
same error message again and again. Alt+F4 didn't function so I tried
ESC, which did the trick. Long seconds later I saw TB recover slowly.
Some windows were redrawn and got filled with text, vanished and others
came up. But I hadn't had to kill it by TM this time.
My except.log again is filled with dozens and dozens entries of the
well-known type GifImage:8 EOutOfResources Out of system resources

All in all it looks as if this smilies-feature currently is under
construction, and at an early stage far away from being full-fledged.

Re: The Bat! 3.81.13 Beta is now available

2006-08-03 Thread Charlene Ferrara
Hi Mary Bull,

Thursday, August 3, 2006
you let us know -possibly edited- :

My idea was to try to replicate the lack of a space between the
handles of two smileys that you reported. Didn't get that far.

Inserting :beerbuds: shows the cursor next to the end of the handle, I
think this should be reworked. TB should insert the spaces as well.

The first :batbeer: that I inserted (I typed the handle for the one I
chose manually in this sentence) caused the Alert boxes to begin
cascading--they showed the error message you report that you got
 on exit.

I added my note in https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=5956 to
describe the differences in both versions of TBs current instability
concerning this smilies-feature and added a except.log for dev. team.

TB! froze while painting multiple Alert boxes.

I had to kill it with the Task Manager.

Next time I will give ESC a try.

 :batwine::batwine:

Confirmed. See above. Let us console ourselves with a glass of
 ;batwine: !

:bat-herb-tea: cheers! Since June 2005 when I was ill and got strong
antibiotics I haven't touched a glass of wine. So let us clink glasses
with :bat-herb-tea: on my end and with :batwine: on yours!

Here's to this Insert Smile code's getting fixed soon!!

It would relieve my weak memory from the need of having to remember the
correct handles of two dozens of smilies. I do not really need this
feature, but since it is positioned at a quite prominent place it simply
has to work.

Further note: When I clicked the Send button to send this message, I
got cascading Alert boxes which said Canvas does not allow
redrawing. TB! froze and I had to kill it with the Task Manager.

That's quite normal those days :evilbat: All joking aside, I have
noticed this about ten times and in each case I was playing with
inserting smilies previously. Well, once being wet with oil paint or
acrylic all forms of Canvas won't allow redrawing, nothing new. :P

The bat! begin to be slow and finally crash.

Not confirmed. TM shows that TB stops writing/reading on HDD, nothing
happens.

BTW: you seem to be a rather experimentalizing person, can you confirm
that if you pick delete task in Connection Centre TB closes the
Internet connection? The only way not to lose my established connection
is to RMB the IMAP account and pick disconnect from server.

I can confirm this with POP,

This actually never happened with any version of TB here. Rather strange
that that happened to me ever since I use IMAP.

.IF. the connection was established by TB
   .AND.
(.IF. there is only this one POP session open and I choose delete
 task
.OR.
  .IF. I hit abort all).

This has been forever, not new to this beta.

Did you make it public on bugtrack? There are at least two places within
TB where one can set options to either disconnect or not after mail
retrieval, and I have forbidden to disconnect. So it is obviously a bug,
isn't it?

The Bat! 3.81.13 Beta is now available from:
 http://www.ritlabs.com/en/tbbeta/

Up and running.
Tried some smilies and found no AV during inserting and receiving such
mail, but on exit I got cascading error messages -about one per second-
saying the same as the entries in my except log:

 v3.81.13 Beta /Charlene 02.08.2006 23:16:06 TimerEx:1
EInvalidOperation Canvas does not allow drawing

My monitor flickered heavily and showed a white empty mask covering the
entire screen and TB didn't react any more. Had to force it's exit with
task manager. Redrawing of desktop icons took some time, start
remained white/empty until mouseover.

And again: repeatedly inserting smilies will not always show the desired
effect on recipient's side since a space between the end of a smilie and
the beginning of the next one is missing, TB can't display
:boohoo::boohoo: as two :boohoo: s correctly.

Re: The Bat! 3.81.12 Beta -inserting smileys

2006-07-27 Thread Charlene Ferrara
Dear Mary,

Thursday, July 27, 2006
you let us know -possibly edited- :

I have just encountered a series of AV messages that TB! cannot draw
an image after using the Insert Smile dialogue window

Thank you for being such an adventurous beta-testing friend. Have you
had the opportunity to have a look at the except.log file? In my case,
there were dozens of lines of text that all said the same. The beginning
of the error log contains some words about -wait, I found it:
GifImage:8 EInvalidOperation Canvas does not allow drawing

This was the start of a cascade of more errors. When I tried out some
smilies that I would send to me, I found that there were some doubles
(the kissy ones in the first line) and that some of them didn't seem to
have a correct handle i.e. :handle: Some missed the final : at the
end. And when I received those, they wouldn't show up correctly.

The AV windows cascaded. I had to close TB! with the Task Manager.

My Bat certainly has been much more experienced in crashing than yours,
every now and then I have some troubles with that. If I restore it from
tray, sometimes TB can't be motivated to go back at work: The freshly
maximized window, although set as active, doesn't react on any of my
clicks then. TB can't be terminated the regular way then and must be
aborted by task manager. This time, however, when fiddling around with
the insert smiles functionality, my TB had a heavy hick-up for some
seconds before it finally crashed and closed itself without me having it
stopped. I saw IIRC some alert boxes, too, but all happened much too
quick.

BTW: moving the scroll bar in the opening smileys box does not have any
visible effect on the icons there: they stay and won't scroll as long as
the mouse holds and moves the bar.

 Confirmed.

I agree with you that this feature should be reworked in-depth.

Yes, and I noticed that the reaction is quite slow here. Hovering over

Re: The Bat! 3.81.12 Beta -inserting smileys

2006-07-27 Thread Charlene Ferrara
Hello Mary,

Thursday, July 27, 2006
you wrote -surely not edited- :

GifImage:8 EInvalidOperation Canvas does not allow drawing

Ah! That's the language which was on the Alert Boxes (which I
perceived at first as cascading AVs) that came up for me. There were
dozens of them before I used the Task Manager to close TB!

However, when I unpacked the Except log you sent using WinRar, saving
it to My Documents, the language shows as:

 v3.81.12 Beta /Charlene 26.07.2006 22:59:33 GifImage:6
 EOutOfResources Out of system resources

So, I did not recognize it as being the same as my own Alert boxes.

Thanks a million for clarifying this.

The very beginning is as follows:

v3.81.12 Beta /Charlene 26.07.2006 22:59:33 GifImage:6 EOSError System Error.
Code: 87.
Falscher Parameter
v3.81.12 Beta /Charlene 26.07.2006 22:59:33 GifImage:8 EOutOfResources Out of
system resources
v3.81.12 Beta /Charlene 26.07.2006 22:59:33 GifImage:8 EInvalidOperation Canvas
does not allow drawing
v3.81.12 Beta /Charlene 26.07.2006 22:59:33 GifImage:8 EInvalidOperation Canvas
does not allow drawing
v3.81.12 Beta /Charlene 26.07.2006 22:59:33 GifImage:8 EOutOfResources Out of
system resources
v3.81.12 Beta /Charlene 26.07.2006 22:59:33 GifImage:6 EOSError System Error.
Code: 87.

So a EOSError followed by the out of resources note leads to a nearly
endless loop of
GifImage:8 EInvalidOperation Canvas does not allow drawing

I agree with you that this feature should be reworked in-depth.

Perhaps you could describe its shortcomings in an issue report at Bug
 Tracker?

I would then put a supporting note.

Please do so at https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=5956 and help me
out with some more clarifying words on it. :)

The Bat! 3.81.12 Beta -inserting smileys

2006-07-26 Thread Charlene Ferrara
Dear List members,

I had a one-time-issue with this version:
Inserting a smile caused a heavy malfunction, consisting of several
half-drawn error messages that could not be read properly, because TB
closed itself within seconds. I noticed that in the background something
was going on, the monitor flickered a lot.

The second attempt to do so was successful indeed, no further trouble,
so I insert my smile here == :)

Dev. team may want to have an eye on attached except.log.

I can confirm this when I try and send a form from QuickBooks Pro.
This did not happen before when everything was correctly filled in.

Unfortunately this issue still is present, I always have to fill in the
recipient despite the fact that I already am in a specific folder. I
have a feeling that if once a AV occurred, something somewhere within TB
gets broken. I mean, there were times where I had no AV and things were
more or less fine, some versions later a RBM on the systray icon causes
an AV and later I realize some difference in TB's behavior.

Is your TB well after refraining from the use of QuickBooks Pro? Or was
there a damage TB didn't recover from?
