It's easy to disable it. And that's what I plan to do, and re-test,

However, I don't really expect the culprit to be Outpost, since Stuart

Yes. Don't know whether to put a :( or a :) here. :)

Although I guess I lucked out on this issue...

Indeed.

I think the only other person experiencing this latest is Stuart
Hemming, and even he hasn't had the full severity of it that I have.

I will just keep experimenting with various settings, to see if I can
nail the culprit down. At first I thought maybe my dpi setting might
be at fault (I have it at 120, which XP Settings/Advanced describes as
Large). But setting it back to Normal had no effect on this.

I also did a vigorous weeding out of Temp folders and old, now-unused
Apps, gaining thereby 5 GB of HD free space, raising that to 63%, in
case there were any file-management issues.

RAM on this machine is 512 MB. Task Manager says that TB! is using
103,408 kb of memory, that I am running 49 processes, that the Commit
Charge is 317 MB and that CPU usage is ranging between 0% and 16%,
usually running up and down between 0% and 4%. Although I did see one
spike to 49% while I began collecting these figures, just now.

Well, all this description of conditions on my machine may be verging
toward OT, even though it's in aid of trying to run down info for my
issue with v. 3.81.04.

But the list is slow right now, and it may be that the figures will
let you or another beta tester come up with an idea of something else
I can test to pin down what's happening for me with v. 3.81.04.

No. Sort of discouraging, but good to get things ruled out.

FWIW I'm running with OTFE switched on.

I'm running Pro, but without OTFE switched on. It's probably not that,
either, as I know there are a few other beta testers who run Pro but
no OTFE.

I'm wondering if my AV (NOD32) is playing into the mix. Although I
have it set not to check e-mail, but only to check files when I open
them.

Or my firewall, Outpost. I think I could safely disable either of
these, temporarily, since I'm behind a router--and additionally, never
visit websites that I'm unfamiliar with, unless vouched for by someone
I've learned to trust, from experience, or download mail from unknown
addresses, or click on attachments I didn't know to expect ahead of
time.

Ah, and I have SpywareBlaster running. But I already disabled it,
earlier, to test if it might be the culprit.

All goes well with v. 3.80.06, which you can see I am running at the
moment.

Thanks for writing, Stuart.

Stuart, thank you for continuing to test this issue. I changed to v.
3.81.04 just now to see what happened. First, in v. 3.80.06 I

The problem I had is when I run something in full screen mode
with a dimension change (ie, play starcraft...). When I received
an email, the translucent ticker would make the display go nuts
in an orgy of flickering. Making the ticker opaque would stop
the flicker. I chalked this up to bad interactions due to to crappy
video card and driver that came with the laptop. And poor use
of company resources, I suppose :p

I don't think I've had this issue. But, the shortcut that I use to
start TB! has the /minimize /nologo parameters, so I wouldn't
notice a lingering splash screen. I haven't seen the unpainting
thing, either.

Stuart, thank you for continuing to test this issue. I changed to v.
3.81.04 just now to see what happened. First, in v. 3.80.06 I
configured the Mail Ticker to Hide.

Then I switched the .exe file to v. 3.81.04, and it launched and ran
just fine, as we've already established.

Then with v. 3.81.04 running, I changed Hide to Always in
Options/Preferences/Messages/Mail Ticker.

As soon as I clicked OK, the Mail Ticker appeared--but flashing so
rapidly as to seem to be flickering.

So, I can't confirm that TB! will run okay--at least so far as using
the Mail Ticker--for me in v. 3.81.04.

Have reverted once more to v. 3.80.06.

I'm thinking of putting a BT report on this issue.

If I do, will you write a supporting note?

Ah, confirmation! Although I hate it that you are a fellow sufferer.

Hide the MailTicker--you may have to revert to v. 3.80.06 to
accomplish that--and TB! v. 3.81.04 launches, displays, and functions
very well.

However, I found that I missed the convenience of the MailTicker too
much. So I have reverted to v. 3.80.06.

Worse, once this happens, when I attempt to install v. 3.80.06 over
the beta, using either Modify or Repair, and the installation has
apparently been successful, still the same incomplete launch happens.

I have fixed it with a Windows System Restore.

At first I thought I might have a faulty download. The size given
in Properties for 3.81.04rar is 3.83 MB and for 3.81.03rar is 3.81 MB.
It doesn't seem as if I would get three bad downloads in a row (2 for

I am using TB! Pro, but no OTFE, on Windows XP SP2.

Any ideas about what could be going wrong for me?

Up and running, as you can see from my sig. Thanks a million!

I had been using WINRAR to unpack TB!'s rar packages, using the
command Extract to the specified folder. Never a problem until now.

But when I asked WINRAR to do that with your .zip, it would say it had
done it, but I still ended up with v. 3.80.6.

So I selected another utility that Windows XP offered me to uncompress
.zip files and put the resultant TB! exe on my Desktop. I then renamed
the v. 3.80.6 exe to old 3.80.6 exe and dragged the extracted
3.81.04 into the The Bat! folder.

Launched, and so far now working perfectly.

I'm very grateful to you, as working with your .zip meant that I found
out that my copy of WINRAR is not working properly. It's the last
thing I would have otherwise suspected.

Now I have to figure out what to do about that. :(

But at least I can now proceed with testing TB! beta v. 3.81.04.

Query: I guess I should delete the renamed old3.80.6 file from my
TB! folder now, to prevent problems?

Done. But WinRar may not after all be the whole culprit in my latest
TB! beta problems.

Before I even saw your suggestion, and while running TB! beta v.
3.81.04 that I had installed from Simon's .zip file, the MailTicker
began to flicker and TB!'s main window started to become unpainted
in about half the window. So I then closed TB!, renamed the 3.81.04 exe
file to old and took old out of the name of the 3.80.06 exe file,
then relaunched TB! Result, a perfectly stable 3.80.06 that launched
perfectly.

As a test for my new beta WinRar program, I completely deleted both
TB! exe files, the renamed and the functioning 3.80.06.

Then I did a fresh download of TB! 3.81.04 from the TB! rar link that
9Val sent. Before doing that, I sent the previous rar to the Recycle
Bin, so there would be no possibility of errors through an overwrite
in the Temp folder.

I asked WinRar to extract to The Bat! And it showed the same launch
problems as ever.

My problem with installing and launching beta v. 3.81.04 is still not
solved.

But I see that there are enough beta testers doing a good job of testing it
without my help.

How weird! That is exactly how I do things this end too.

:)

Which version of Winrar do you have?

I did have 3.20, but this afternoon I downloaded and installed
beta 3.60.4.0. And it does unpack your.zip okay, now. So there was
definitely something corrupted in my old WinRar folder.

Unfortunately, although TB! v. 3.81.04 behaved well for maybe half an
hour in the exe I got from your .zip, it became unstable--first sign,
the MailTicker started flickering, and then the TB! main window
partially unpainted itself.

Really weird. So I'm running TB! 3.80.06, at present, which you can
tell also from my sig.

I'm glad the re-packing to a .zip worked; I did think it was worth
presenting a different archive format. At least you can access a
 .zip natively in WindowsXP

It was certainly worth it to me!!

Re: Incomplete Launch [was Re: The Bat! 3.81.04 is now available]

2006-06-14 Thread Charlene Ferrara
Dear Mary,

Wednesday, June 14, 2006
you let us know -possibly edited- :

Done. But WinRar may not after all be the whole culprit in my latest
 TB! beta problems.

Really seems so :(

Before I even saw your suggestion, and while running TB! beta v.
3.81.04 that I had installed from Simon's .zip file, the MailTicker
began to flicker and TB!'s main window started to become unpainted
 in about half the window.

This I read and the following also.

So I then closed TB!, renamed the 3.81.04 exe
file to old and took old out of the name of the 3.80.06 exe file,
then relaunched TB! Result, a perfectly stable 3.80.06 that launched
 perfectly.

So far so good :)

As a test for my new beta WinRar program, I completely deleted both
TB! exe files, the renamed and the functioning 3.80.06.

Betatesting is demanding sometimes ;) -it takes many steps to verify an
idea or even falsifying it. This I say from own experience.

I fear Rit guys won't love to hear this, but I really think it looks as
if this version of TB is slightly under suspicion. I once had a early 3x
version that constantly refused to start, it took more than two months
to get it going. To my luck I always had a stable version to fall back.
With 9Val's help I succeeded at last and I still am thankful for his
help.

My problem with installing and launching beta v. 3.81.04 is still not
 solved.

Maybe he can help you the same way he helped me. I don't remember how it
worked out or what the steps were we had to take.

But I see that there are enough beta testers doing a good job of testing it
 without my help.

I can't fully subscribe to that point ;) I really hope that some clever
brain will figure out what to do. The only occasions I see half painted
windows or improperly drawn ones is when my system's file system is
strained to the max (like copying huge files while raring other ones in
between).

I believe Opera's cache was empty when I did the earlier downloads
using Opera. Unless something is wrong with Opera's display of the
Cache folder.

I have now made a download using Mozilla Firefox. I disabled
SpywareBlaster before doing that.

But, no joy, still. The installed 3.81.04 won't fully paint the window
on launch, and it presents also a flickering MailTicker.

Do you have any programs installed that check for spyware?

I disabled SpywareBlaster before this latest download.

TB! 3.80.06 runs perfectly. So there can't be any permanent change in
the Registry from anything SpywareBlaster might have done to earlier
downloads/installs?

I am at my wit's end about this and inclined to give up and stick with
TB! 3.80.06.

(The testing on the new Smilie function intrigues me. I hope the AVs
with it get fixed. I never got stable enough with .04 to click on that
button.)

This is only a thought as well Mary, but on occasion IE/Firefox will
give you a duplicate copy of a download from their cache - I've been
 caught with this before.

Good thought. Yes, I've been caught that way also, using Opera.
So, although I have Opera set to clear the Cache on exit, I actually
did a look in the Cache folder to be sure it was empty, before
clicking the Download link.

Is your browser definitely grabbing a entirely new copy of the rar file?

I'm using Opera. So far as I can tell, yes.

But, I'll delete my copy in Temp of the .04rar file and try a download
using Mozilla Firefox. I've never downloaded from TB! with it, so it's
not possible for an old download to be hanging around.

I'll report back how I do with installing from that particular rar.

Do you have any programs installed that check for spyware? In
another thread it appears that some spyware softwares are
incorrectly marking needed registry entries (the bat) as spyware and
removing. If you have these softwares and they are fiddling with
the registry when you run TB that may explain your dilemma?

Ah, I do have SpywareBlaster running. I'll disable it before I try the
download using Firefox.

 Just a thought :\

And also a good one!

It seems to me that you are experiencing conflicts with your video
driver or the way you have tweaked it. It may be valuable to download
and install the latest drivers for your video chip/card.

Then why would v. 3.80.06 not be having the same launch problem?

I have not done anything to the video driver. Could it have tweaked
itself?

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion, Paul, and I'll check it out.

Sorry. I did a lot of revisions trying to express myself clearly to

Launched in a flash and is displaying perfectly!

So, as long as I configure the MailTicker to Hide, I can run v.
3,80.04.

Now the question is, why am I having this problem and nobody else?
