Hmm, I think it is not possible, except if you delete entire folder,
which is not possible with Inbox folder. Other possibility, but
hardly, is that trash folder is emptied in some automatic, or some
other not noticed, way.

MD So, are you saying I should move the messages .tbb and messages.tbi
MD files to a new TB folder, and then compress the new folder?

No, copy them in a temporary folder somewhere *at HD*, not in TB, then
compress your Inbox folder *in Bat*. Then close TB, then copy tbb and
tbi files back in *Inbox folder, at HD*, then start TB. If this is
what I mean, then you should see messages from your Inbox folder, in
TB, again.

***I recalled another reason why you cannot see your messages, and it
can be pretty mussy: if folder structures in TB are not corresponding
with folder structures at your HD. It will happen if you changed
location of messages.* files at your HD.

But, that what is very important is a fact that you still have
messages.* files from this Inbox folder at your HD. As long as you
have them, and as long as you have them copied in some safe place,
would be possible to find a solution. This is most important.

Usage of Read Filter

2002-05-12 Thread Raj

Fellow TB users,

Just wanted to clarify on read filters.

How is a read filter activated. I mean does it get activated automatically after
the mail is read. Or does the folder have to refiltered each time ??? The former
does not seem to work.

I expect to get all messages too, but once the message is in the

Not sure I follow what the problem is. I have a v505 and I expected
to get all messages in the Inbox on my Palm, and do. Are you
expecting to only get the unread messages on the Palm? Is there a
setting you changed to make it do that (I like keeping both Read and

You should really use an external implementation of PGP to enable full

Well, primarily you need one of the external PGP packs - NAI PGP 7.x
(with tray support) has no TB DLL plug in. If you use or can track
down a PGP 6.5.8 freeware or the ckt build then you can use the PGP
DLLs, which you can get from the RITlabs FTP site at
ftp://www.ritlabs.com/pub/the_bat in the PGPDLLS.ZIP file. GnuPG is
supported without using plug-ins.

Imad R. Faiad, the producer of the ckt builds, has issued a new
plug-in DLL for TB to go with Build 8 of the ckt version. Go to
http://www.ipgpp.com/. The plug-in is bundled in the build 8 download.

Re[2]: PGP question

2002-05-12 Thread Roberto Baibich

Well, primarily you need one of the external PGP packs - NAI PGP 7.x
(with tray support) has no TB DLL plug in. If you use or can track
down a PGP 6.5.8 freeware or the ckt build then you can use the PGP
DLLs, which you can get from the RITlabs FTP site at
ftp://www.ritlabs.com/pub/the_bat in the PGPDLLS.ZIP file. GnuPG is
 supported without using plug-ins.

OK, I downloaded version 6.5.8 and installed it and the DLLs
available at RitLabs site. It should be working, but it still
fails still saying that it is an unknown key, but this time
showing the KeyID (0x929DCDA0 in your case). What did I do

Re: MAPI problem

2002-05-12 Thread Roberto Baibich

Just to exemplify, I took an old Eudora backup, installed
Eudora, ran 2 hotsyncs and then imported the mailbox into The
Bat! and ran 2 hotsyncs. Timings:

Eudora 1st hotsync: 3min17s
Eudora 2nd hotsync: 2s
The Bat! 1st hotsync: 3min18s
The Bat! 2nd hotsync: 3min18s

Seems to me that The Bat! is sending all messages to the unit,
everytime I hotsync instead of checking if they are already in
the unit or not, and that's what I want to fix. Any thoughts?

 Hi you all!

I began using The Bat! not long ago, and I must say it's a
pretty amazing program. The only problem I have is with the MAPI
 interface.

I have a Palm V handheld, and I use the mail synchronization
feature in HotSync. It seems that the program is failing to
'say' that a message isn't new, so it'll download every message
in my inbox time and time again, taking a long time to do that.
I had Eudora before going to The Bat!, and it worked perfectly.
Anyone knows how to fix that?

 Thx.

Okay - now we're in the domain of how PGP works. This is better
dealt with on PGP-Basics on YahooGroups. Your problem is that you
don't have *my* public key on your PGP keyring. You need to configure
PGP to download unknown keys from keyservers on verification and
encryption.

Yes, but do you have a single mail folder containing 1GB of mail. If
it were TB mail, I did some rough calculations based on my base sizes
and came up with over 300,000 messages for that one base. Either the

There's another way to get these accidentally disappeared messages
back - I've had this happen to me, too.

Select the folder they disappeared from (in this case your inbox),
then from the Folder menu select Browse deleted messages and make sure

In TB! - two most populous of 11 mailboxes

POP #1 = 29,891 messages (mostly major attachments)
POP #9 = 14,300 messages (mostly major attachments)

Messages in Netscape mail to be imported = 78,998 (about 70% major attachments).

Average attachment size per message (list postings) in these mailboxes is
350K. All are being compressed. In V1.53d (Win98SE), it took up to
40 minutes to compress, now in 1.60h it took about 2.5 minutes (Win98SE)!
A big improvement on that aspect. I also noticed a further improvement

Interesting. I tested it before making the statement. No
auto-triggering occurs here when I manually mark messages as read.

Would you try it on a message that has already been marked as read.
That is, mark a read message as unread, then manually remark it as
read and see if the filter triggers. This is how I've been doing the
testing. There's perhaps a difference between messages reflagged as
unread as opposed to messages that are genuinely unread.

Re: Usage of Read Filter

2002-05-12 Thread Miguel A. Urech

Hello Allie,

Would you try it on a message that has already been marked as read.
That is, mark a read message as unread, then manually remark it as
read and see if the filter triggers.

Yes, it sure triggers.

Which version of PGP did you install... 6.5.8 Freeware, or Imad's

there was no need to install the PGP DLL's from RITLabs because the CKT

have over written the Plugin.

Not that I've been able to find. If you are scrolling within the Message
List, TB has a 'feature' which allows for the scrolling of an entire page
except for the last line. IOW, when you scroll within the Message List a
new page will appear with the last line from the previous page now sitting
atop the new page.

I can live with that I suppose, but what I find annoying is that TB has
interfered with my Mouse drivers such that when I scroll within the
Preview Pane, the scrolling occurs 8 lines at a time... which is difficult
to live with. :o(

Re: MAPI problem

2002-05-12 Thread Tim Musson

Hey Roberto,

My MUA believes you used The Bat! (v1.60h) Personal
to write the following on Sunday, May 12, 2002 at 8:24:04 AM.

RB I expect to get all messages too, but once the message is in the
RB handheld, I don't see a reason to transmit it again to the
RB unit. Somehow my old messages that have already been transmited
RB to the handheld are being send to the handheld everytime I
RB synchronize the device.

Guess my brain is not functioning this week... g

How can you tell that all the mail is being sent to your palm each
time? Is there a log that lists each msg that is sync'd?

I have noticed a couple of oddities

1. You want to have TB the active window during the mail sync, or it
is 4-5 times slower. I think this is an issue with how TB has
implemented MAPI? but am not sure.

2. The read/unread flag on the Palm device is changed to match what is
the TB Inbox. Kind of a pain, but I haven't needed that
functionality recently, so have not pursued it.

Becky is that nice for you eh?

Awe shucks! g

I was so positively hooked on scrolling with only the arrow keys from
my Forte' Agent days that it was very difficult dealing with using the
alt+up/down keys in TB!. In fact, I installed a macro tool to remap the
keys but this created other little conflicts in that I couldn't use
the arrow keys for any other purpose except scrolling. I therefore
started using the spacebar for scrolling. This restricts me to not use
the RTV and I had to get accustomed to page downs while reading.

It was worth it since I so love the other features TB! offers.

I do hope the scroll problem with the mouse is fixed one of these days
but I'm surprised that it would comprise a show-stopper for you. :-) I
can't even hope for that since my problems with TB! are a matter of
taste rather than a malfunction.

I stopped using the mouse to scroll when it caused Explorer
instability some time ago when I used to use Win2k. Bad drivers at the
time. I had to stop scrolling with the mouse altogether and haven't
really started back since then.

Yeah, I know the story about the fact that the user shouldn't adapt to
software. However, there's perfection and there's the reality of
imperfection that we have to always deal with.

It seems to be machine hardware, OS and driver related.

Re: middle mouse button scrolling

2002-05-12 Thread Nick Andriash

Hello Allie,

On Sunday, May 12 2002 at 01:45 PM PDT, you wrote:

Becky is that nice for you eh?

Becky is extremely stable, and the latest Beta that was released last
month now includes some nice features that fit my style of E-Mail reading:

Update History

Ver2.00.11 - Ver2.05.00

- Added Save Attachments to Separate Data Files (General Setup Advanced)
  option. (Default)
If this option is on, attachment parts in e-mail messages will be
saved as separate data files, which increases overall performance and
decreases the risk of virus-scanning software deleting e-mail messages
that contains viruses along with other innocent e-mail messages.
Those separated attachment files are saved as is (not decoded) and
this process is totally transparent from the user.

- There are two commands added in File Folder menu. Separate
Attachments and Combine Attachments. Older version of Becky! doesn't
support data files that has separate attachment. So, if you need to go
back to the old version for some reasons, you will need to process
  Combine Attachments on each folder.

- Over ? KB message is saved as single file option is discontinued
because Save Attachment to Separate Data Files option does a better
  job.

- Auto complete for To, Cc, and Bcc fields is supported. You can turn it
off by unchecking General Setup Editor Use auto complete for
To, Cc, and Bcc fields. option.

- The result of Query is shown as a folder in the tree view. This
temporary folder exists while Query dialog is visible.

- Added Flag for messages.
You can double click the left side of the e-mail item in the list view
to add Flag to the messages. There are some functionalities are
added for flags, like Prohibit deleting flagged items. in General
SetupTree/List, and Select Flagged Messages in Edit menu.
Unlike the priorities or the color labels, flag works on IMAP server.

- Do not save option is added to Delete from Server action in the
filtering manager. This allows you to set up Kill filter for
particular kind of messages you don't even want to see.
If the message meets Do not save action, no other actions, except
Sound, will be processed even if the message matches other
  conditions.

- Improved thread capability.
No more Date related thread cutting that occurred in the older
  versions.
Nevertheless, the performance of thread generation is much more
  improved.
Plus, you can connect threads by drag and drop operation.

- Switch Mailbox command is added in Compose window.

- Force to Reconnect option in Mailbox Setup Connection, which
enable you to switch dialup connections on Collection and Delivery.

- There you see small H icon in the list view if the messages that received
  with Ver.2.05 contain HTML document.
If you process File Folder Reconstruct Index, you can also see
those small Hs on the messages that you have received with older
  versions.

- Convert to Plain Text option is added in General Setup Message
View HTML View. If you hate HTML messages but you want to read
the content sometimes, this option is for you. (and it is default)

- Invalidate Executable Tags option is renamed as Disallow Scripts.

- Added a resource-requesting callback function to the plug-in
interface. That way you can create plug-ins that replaces icons and
  bitmaps in Becky!.
For details, see _b2icon_ sample in Plug-In SDK.

- Supported koi8-r character set.

- Made the filtering manager resizable. If you use Tietew's Powerful
Customizer plug-in, you will see some flickers while resizing but it's
not a bug. Both programs are just working on their way.

- You can use short cut keys on Compose window even if the caret is in
  To, Subject, etc. fields.

- Disabled Delete key when the message view has a focus. You can still
delete messages with other key strokes. (like Ctrl+D)

- Made Export command exports hidden messages under the thread.

- Added a command line option /B that opens the address book
  immediately.

- Compaction will not delete Bcc fields anymore.

- Delete command is added alongside Cut, Copy, etc. commands in the
right click menu of the editor.

- If you search addresses in the address book, it will show Group
instead of Comments in the list.

- Made 4way button repeatable.

- You can customize columns of the list view. View Customize List
  Columns

- When you are saving an attachment with Save As command with the file
name that has no file extension, the appropriate file extension will
  be added automatically.

I do hope the scroll problem with the mouse is fixed one of these days
but I'm surprised that it would comprise a show-stopper for you. :-)

ACM Actually, he's more likely to grow accustomed to it and make it a
ACM system wide setting. Habituation is a hell of a thing. I find myself
ACM hitting the scrollbar to read text anywhere else that I am. I can't in
ACM all windows and wish that I could.

now that I know how to USE it, I sure will grow accustomed to it! It
takes the PAIN out of the preview PANE :)

NA I was only alluding to 'time'... in time you will tire of the massive
NA scrolling. However, reading further down your message I see you have a
NA more than adequate screen, so there may be nothing for you to wait
for.;o)

I thought you might see it my way, at least in MY case:). I am
learning a new email program, PGP, GPG and a new computer, all at
once! these new wheels are neat ! All I need now is an infrared mouse
and a flat panel display:) not gonna happen anytime soon for ME!

Re[2]: MAPI problem

2002-05-12 Thread Roberto Baibich

How can you tell that all the mail is being sent to your palm each
time? Is there a log that lists each msg that is sync'd?

By the timings I took with both Eudora and The Bat!, using the
same mailbox (all messages are read, deleted all messages in the
Palm unit before hotsync'n w/ each email proggie).

Eudora 1st hotsync: 3min17s
Eudora 2nd hotsync: 2s
The Bat! 1st hotsync: 3min18s
The Bat! 2nd hotsync: 3min18s

That's why I think that I'm having every message sent everytime
I hotsync with The Bat!.

Greetings TheBat! Users,

Does anyone know if starting with v2.x will no longer have TheBat
registry key. I seem to remember that someone said that in place of
the registry key, their will be an .ini file within TheBat directory.
I just wanted to know because if so, it will change the way I do my
back-ups. to be on the safe side.

I have been sticking with 1.60c for a while now. I have never been one
to upgrade just because. First and foremost, I look for stability in
a program and v1.60c has not let me down yet. I have over 22,000
messages now and everything is running fine. I know this is nothing
compared to some of you. I love the power of TheBat and will most
likely never have to change email clients again.

My continued thanks to Marck, Allie and others who put so much time
into helping new and not so new users through this list for the best
email client in the world! Long live TheBat!
