advantage KAV and plug in?

2002-07-05 Thread Ochrid

Hello all,

So far I have been using NAV 2002 in combination with the Bat!
Recent remarks about NAV not detecting the Yahaa-virus led me to
reconsider.

I have read about plugins for KAV, and where to get them.

Can someone explain to me why I would need a plug in?
Would KAV otherwise not scan my mail?
Or what is the advantage?

Re:Stuck Messages

2002-07-05 Thread Michael Rudnick

Jonathan,

Thanks for your comments and from others as well.

Since this has occurred several times I have some information on the
problem. I can't yet see a pattern but here's what I know so far:
- The Bat! gets stuck downloading a message. I note the message
  number.
- I open a browser and go into my mailbox via the web.
- I find the message and look at it. Usually there is nothing special
about it. I can read it fine. On several occasions it has been from
  this group.
- I go into the dispatcher and delete the offending message.

I guess I could try to download the message in Outlook Express, which
I still have on my system. If it worked though, what would that tell
me? I already know that the message is OK. I assume that since others
aren't noticing this happening regularly then it's not a major bug.
I'm happy to do a little more research on this if someone knows what I
should do with the results.

Cheers,

Back to the original story, I finally discovered that my KNOWN filter

Here are the headers for 2 messages that do not thread. The

I believe that the In-Reply-To: field is how TB Threads, not by

In Netscape 4.7x there was an option to export the address book as an
LDIF file. I don't know if that feature still exists in 6.2. If it
does, do the export, then in TB, open the address book and hit
  - File
- Import From
  - LDIF File

That method seems to be the most reliable and easiest.

It could well be.

MD I really want to figure out what caused this. If it's just a

MD TB.

There is no known issues with random loss of email. Whenever email has
been lost, it has proven to be either a user error or a system (OS)
error. If it ever proves to be a TB bug, it is fixed at once. Sure,
some bugs don't get fixed, but stability issues and data integrity
issues are always resolved in my experience (which in TB terms is now
over four years).

MD Perhaps someone from Rit Labs could chime in here? Any theories
MD what caused this?

I know that RITlabs have no theories and won't chime in. How do I
know?

1) There is no similar issue open on the BugTraq
2) If there were any such issue in the current release, it would be
   fixed PDQ.
3) I think it may be related to the resource leakage issues that
   abounded pre release Q.

It sounds like an index corruption to me and that if it were ever to
happen again, the quick recourse would be to turn off all folder
compression for the affected folder, exit TB, delete the .tbi file and
restart. The tbi file would be automatically re-created and any lost
messages will miraculously reappear.

If the messages were truly lost then the only other theory is that
they were lost during a Compress operation. That could be due to
system crash or OS error. If it were that, you'd know all about it
though.

Re: advantage KAV and plug in?

Hello Ochrid,

In Reference to your Posting on Friday, July 05 2002 at 07:47 AM PDT,

So far I have been using NAV 2002 in combination with the Bat!
Recent remarks about NAV not detecting the Yahaa-virus led me to
 reconsider.

Remarks from whom? Before dumping NAV 2002 based on that kind of evidence,
I would go right to the horse's mouth and direct any concerns you may have
to NAV Support.

I have read about plugins for KAV, and where to get them.

If you are intent on changing AV Programs, may I suggest a very close look
at NOD32 from Eset Software. It has a very small footprint and from what I
have read and experienced... is very reliable.
