That's likely a server configuration problem.

ACK.

The server is supposed to mark successfully retrieved messages as
 'read'.

He might do so, but this is irrelevant for TB! working the expected way.

When TB! reconnects, it will then know which messages are new and not
yet retrieved from which have already been retrieved.

Not by any 'server mark'.
The Bat! fetches a list of 'UID's (via UIDL command) at the beginning of
a session. It stores the UID of every message it retrieved locally and
the next time it fetches these list it compares it to it's local copy.
Every UID alredy present in it's data set it ignores, every unknown UID
is queued for the corresponding message to be downloaded. After
successfully downlowding the mail the new UID is added to the local
repository.

The trouble the OP might be run into will likely be: the POP3-server
does not generate the same UID for the same message every time.
This is a known, but not wide spread problem which can only be fixed on
server side. The Bat! can do _nothing_ about it, it's only chance to
identify a message on server definitely is: the UID.
Every other possibility to identify a duplicate is connected to
downloading the message and do a local 'Dup check' as 'Kill duplicates'
does.

Hope this clears thing a little bit, albeit it is no solution to the OPs
problem. I doubt there's any solution, but the administrator fixing the

TF OK, TB cannot change the content-type header of incoming mails. How do
TF we get the tabs? What should TB do differently?

I don't know. Based on the headers, TB tries to figure out what
attachments to show tabbed. So it depends on the sender describing the
contents.
What TB's sending part is considered. It's difficult for a program to
decide what files are text-based and what not. Even though I
associated *.cfg and *.log with notepad, I'm perfectly aware of the
fact that they don't have to be plain text. So I can't fault TB in
it's behaviour.

TF Now, I don't know the RFCs well enough to know what related means.
TF But is it correct that TB does not show a tab?

Since the RFC's only tell us what the messages have to look like
during transport, they leave us (and TB) completely free on the
visualization and storage part. So you can't base a bug report on any
RFC. (Only when it's transport related.)
Something else is a bug report because you look upon TB's behaviour
as faulty. You can argue for that in this case, however it may depend
on your starting point. Do you want TB only to shows tabs when you're
absolutely sure it's correct or do you want TB to show as much tabs as
possible?

TF On the left-hand side of the message, I still see the attachment
TF icons, even the correct one (IrfanView), so TB does know that
TF there are attachments and what they are.

TB doesn't know the attachments as what they are. TB knows their
extension and what program you associated with it. I've got *.doc
files that are Word-files (in one of the many versions) or plain text.
However TB (and Windows) show them all with Word-icons.

TF Is this a bug or not?

Depends on your point of view. Can be argued both ways. I think a
feature request would be more honest than a bug report, but
considering your remark in [EMAIL PROTECTED]">mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED]. We
all make our own choices. ;-)

Introduction and Question

2002-12-16 Thread Ron Jeffries
Hi All,

I've been using TheBat! for quite a while now, at least a year or so. I thought
I was subscribed to this list but I never got any mail, so imagined that the
list was dead. Instead, my subscription must have failed somehow. Anyway, here I
am again.

About me: I've been programming for ages, emailing not so long but making up for
it by posting to lots of mailing lists, mostly about Extreme Programming. I'm a
long-time Windows user but won't use Outlook because I don't need any viruses
right now. I used Eudora for a long time but was having problems with it when
someone suggested TheBat! I've been a happy user ever since!

I do have a question, about filters. I tried searching the archives and didn't
find anything, but if it's there, feel free to send me back.

I set up my filters so that I read all mail in the inbox and inbox-known. Then I
use Read filters to send the mail to folders for filing. This works fine with
one exception.

I would like to default all mail that isn't filtered elsewhere to go to the
folder named Read. I can do that with the last filter in the list, of course.
That also works.

HOWEVER: If the mail in question is useless or spam, I want to delete it.
Pressing the Del key, with the default read filter mentioned above, doesn't send
the mail to Trash, it sends it to Read.

So my question is: how can I have both a default filter sending mail that has
been read from Inbox to folder Read, and allowing mail that is deleted from
Inbox to Trash.

Thanks!

You might even be able to assign the delete key as hotkey for your

Funny that you'd choose that example, for that's one the things that's
stored in the registry and not in the program directory. It's possible
that if the registry fails TB looks for the default message base path
and that would be the mail directory in de program directory, but as

MR S/MIME differently than does Microsoft. It doesn't even
MR matter which is correct or which is not. The fact that by
MR simply switching one's preference for implementation method
MR can yield the opposite verification result (valid vs.
MR invalid) shows that there is *not* a standard at work
MR here.

Regardless of which S-Mime implementation I use, Victor's (Comodo
Class 3) certificate shows as invalid. Simon's (Certum Level I)

Re: Attachement showing in a TAB?

2002-12-16 Thread Thomas Fernandez
Hello Roelof,

On Mon, 16 Dec 2002 11:10:57 +0100 GMT (16/12/02, 17:10 +0700 GMT),
Roelof Otten wrote:

TF OK, TB cannot change the content-type header of incoming mails. How do
TF we get the tabs? What should TB do differently?

I don't know. Based on the headers, TB tries to figure out what
attachments to show tabbed. So it depends on the sender describing the
 contents.

Maybe TB should judge from the file extension rather than the header.

What TB's sending part is considered. It's difficult for a program
to decide what files are text-based and what not. Even though I
associated *.cfg and *.log with notepad, I'm perfectly aware of the
fact that they don't have to be plain text. So I can't fault TB in
 it's behaviour.

I get the feeling that it depends on whether TB has an internal viewer
for the file extension, rather than whether it is associated to an
application. If TB thinks it has no viewer for .cfg files, it cannot
show a tab. A suggestion would be to add file extensions to the
internal viewer(s).

But that doesn't explain why .jpg files don't get a tab if the header
is not as expected, even though valid.

If the RFCs say it is OK to attach a .jpg file and have the header
show octet-stream, then TB should recognise them correctly and also
show a tab. IMHO.

Something else is a bug report because you look upon TB's behaviour
as faulty. You can argue for that in this case, however it may depend
on your starting point. Do you want TB only to shows tabs when you're
absolutely sure it's correct or do you want TB to show as much tabs as
 possible?

Both. The .jpg attachment declared as octet-stream is obviously
correct, so TB should show a tab.

TB doesn't know the attachments as what they are. TB knows their
extension and what program you associated with it. I've got *.doc
files that are Word-files (in one of the many versions) or plain text.
However TB (and Windows) show them all with Word-icons.

Of course, it could only be based on the extension.

TF Is this a bug or not?

Depends on your point of view. Can be argued both ways. I think a
feature request would be more honest than a bug report, but
considering your remark in [EMAIL PROTECTED]">mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED]. We
all make our own choices. ;-)

new, unread and read messages?

2002-12-16 Thread Heiko Kuschel
Hallo there for the first time,

my name is Heiko Kuschel.
I started using The Bat on Saturday, but I have a lot of experience
with mailing etc. I´ve used YAM (Amiga) for the last 5 years, and it´s
quite similar to The Bat!

There´s one feature I´m really missing ATM.
YAM not only shows me read and unread messages, but also new
messages, that means: Messages that were collected since I last
started the program and that were not yet read. I´m subscribed in a
lot of mailing lists where I don´t read all the mails, so it´s
important so see the new ones - well, if not important, then say
convenient. :-)
(Yes I can order them by date, but nevertheless...)

I got an idea that you can probably do this with these colour groups
and some intelligent filtering.
I can do the first part no prob: Set all incoming mails to the colour
group new. Is there a way to define a filter that sets all messages
back to normal either when starting or leaving the program? (Even
better, also when I read a message?) That should do it. :-)

Or maybe you have a better idea.

Thanks in advance.

ACM Without installing a separate PGP version or GnuPG, the menu items

ACM since it only supports RSA keys and many PGP users are now using
ACM DH/DSS keys.

HK But what about unread new messages when I leave The Bat!?

Unread messages when you leave TB will be still unread the next time
you start it. You can't assign a automatic filter to be triggered on
exit.
Only way around would be a manual filter that sets the colour group to
none. But you'll have to remember to run it for every folder with
unread messages, every time you close TB. More than a bit cumbersome,
I'd say.

Probably you're not aware of the fact that this list has a webbased
archive. The addresses in the headers are removed, but the message
body is unchanged. You place your address in your signature, so that
it can be collected by address harvesting bots.
Since almost half of the messages in this list are about spam handling
filters, you'd better be aware of this. To prevent is better than to
cure. ;-)
