Can't remove v5

2011-07-25 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Greetings Bat People,

Like many others on the list, I too feel the need to revert
to an earlier version. I've learned from the list that you
can't just reinstall an earlier version but have to remove
v5 first. Unfortunately, I can't delete version 5. I've
used Windows Add and Remove Programs and when that didn't
work, used the Revo uninstaller. Admittedly I did not run
Revo balls to the wall, full on because at one point in the
removal process it showed that it was going to remove a
whole bunch of stuff (like my custom .wav files) that I
didn't want removed. I declined that part of it.

I did do a backup of v5 before attempting to remove it in
the hopes that if everything crashed and burned, I might be
able to get myself back to a working program even if it was
still v5. What exactly does a backup contain? Would the
.wav files be in there? Will a previous version (should I
ever be able to load one) be able to use a backup made by
v5?

Revo is pretty thorough and I'm terrified that I'm going to
lose all my messages and more if I allow it to run full
bore.

I would really like to revert to v4.2.44 but have no idea
what I'm doing wrong or if I'm worrying about things that
will be ok if I do successfully revert at some point.

Bad idea. You never know what tools like this do or do not remove,
what may or may not belong to the program you're working on.

If you have a full backup anyway, why don't you try a more direct
approach: Rename thebat.exe to thebat.exe.v5, then do a standard
install of v4. Afterwards there should be a new old thebat.exe
there, which should ideally be able to handle your existing
messagebase. If it can not, you're no worse off than before, just
reinstall v5 again and if necessary restore your backup.

Delete thebat.exe from the install folder, and run the 4.2.44 setup and
install over the top! That worked for me and others.

Not sure what the issue is, I'll just go back to using pop with gmail.

Wow! That was easy. I did exactly as the above paragraph
suggests and in seconds, I'm once again running v4.2.44.2.
Everything seems to be where it should be. I don't think
I'll be so quick to upgrade in the future.

Thank you Alto and Si. Alas, if only all tech support were
this good.

I did have a problem with another app on imap and my antivirus was
causing the problem. Also firewalls can be a pain. Hopefully you will

I suppose you haven't used Revo Uninstaller yet.

1) First it creates a system restore point before uninstalling a program
2) Then it uses the program's own uninstall (if any)
3) After that it offers the possibility to search the registry for any
leftovers,
lists them and leaves the user the choice wether he wants to remove any of
these (all individually selectable)
4) Finally it can search for any left over files and folders. Once again it is
up to the user to decide wether he wants
to delete them or not (none are selected automatically, as is the case for
the registry items in point 3 and the user
   can skip steps 3 and 4) (x)

I use Revo Uninstaller Pro for a couple of years now and it isn't longer
than yesterday that I was very happy to have
it. I bought an upgrade for OmniPage 18 (coming from 17). The installer kept
saying that an earlier version was still on
my computer and had to be removed before I could install version 18. It
seems to be a known problem since Nuance has
created a tool specifically to remove earlier versions. Well, Nuance's tool
wasn't able to do the job.

I thought it had to do with PaperPort (which has a Omipage-dll of it's
own) and PDF Converter/Creator from the same
company that are installed too. At last, I used Search Everything to find
any leftover files/folders with OmniPage in
their name and removed those with Revo through the right mouse-click
context-menu. These appeared to be left-overs from
pre-OmniPage 15 versions and if I would simply have deleted those files,
there would still have been left-overs in the
Registry.

Oh well, everyone has to decide for him/herself wether or not to use Revo
Uninstaller (Pro), but this is not the kind of
tool that does things without leaving the user the choice (as many
competitors do).

(x) When removing TB! nothing isn't removed that TB! itself would not remove
during phase 1.
But TB! did not remove everything from the either.

BTW: the trick you suggested (renaming (or removing) thebat.exe did not work
for me when trying to go back to 4.

I have to say that the current working of IMAP in TB5 is one of the
best I have seen, fast and reliable. I just hope his problem is
something else and not something that is lurking beneath the layers

I just wanted to confirm what Mark is saying here. I've
used Revo Uninstaller (free version) for many years and
never once have I had a problem with it removing anything I
needed. I don't even question the things it wants to remove
anymore and just let it have it's way, confident that
nothing will be harmed. But, because I know how well it
works, I was reluctant to let it remove TB because I was
afraid it would remove my message base or something else
required for TB to run.

Like Mark, I too have had programs which simply refused to
be removed through conventional means only to have them
obliterated finally by Revo; and, you can't beat free.
