No, you must choose with TB PGP decryption (Shift + Strg + D) and not

But Tom was choosing "Check PGP signature"... and couldn't understand why
he was asked for his passphrase and nothing else happened. It was because
he never asked for the message to be decrypted... only the signature to be
checked, which is what the Plugin happily performed. Now, he was asked for
his passphrase because the message *had* to be decrypted before the
signature could be checked, and the passphrase is required for that
function because his Private Key is used to decrypt the message.

Granted, there are not many situations that would warrant a signature
check on an encrypted message... and not want the decrypted message
presented in some form. ;o)

I see what you're saying but what is written on the web page is still
misleading. If a TB! user says that he/she wishes to decrypt a message,
what do you think they mean, and what would you tell them to do? I'd tell
them to use the PGP decrypt command and explain how it works, assuming
that they wish to decrypt *and* read the message.

If they ask how to verify a signature, I'd tell them to use the "check PGP
signature" command and add that the command works with encrypted and
signed messages as well. However, for encrypted messages an unencrypted
copy isn't created in order to simply verify the signature. I don't quite
know if someone would wish to only verify the signature of an encrypted
message and not decrypt and read it as well.

This is why PGP so clearly makes their command, decrypt and verify.
There's no verification only command.

But what TB! does when it checks a signature on a PGP encrypted message is
exactly as advertised. The message must first be decrypted to obtain the
signature... the verification information is presented in the PGPLog, but
the message remains in it's encrypted state. Therefore:

"To decrypt an encrypted e-mail message from The Bat!, use "Check PGP
signature" command from the Tools menu. If the message is signed, PGP
automatically checks its signature validity. Note that the message is NOT
stored so you need to decrypt it this way each time you read the

depicts exactly the way TB! behaves when you check the signature on an
encrypted message. OTOH, if you use Tools/PGP/PGP Decrypt then TB! will
check the signature *and* leave a copy of the decrypted message.

Tom's original question was:

> But when I click on check pgp signature, It asks for my passphrase and
> ... nothing !
> So i'd like to know what happens to you, I hoped a window opened with
> my message decrypted or something like that.

If he wants to do both... check the signature *and* decrypt the message,
then he must use Tools/PGP/PGP Decrypt. Choosing only Tools/PGP/PGP Check
Signature will do exactly that, but even to do that, PGP must use your
Private Key to decrypt the message to get at the signature, which is why
it asks for your Passphrase. The reason it didn't leave a decrypted copy
as well is because that was not asked for. No? Yes?

I also use PGPtray to decrypt so as *not* to have decrypted messages
hanging around. I know when I used to use Pegasus and I decrypted a
message it would show the message in a viewer, similar to PGPtray and
when the message was closed, it remained encrypted. It didn't produce
another *decrypted* message. Just one of the things I would like to

It has to be said that the recent suggestion of a Read filter which
picks up "(pgp decrypted)" in the subject of a read message and does a
filter action delete does the job beautifully. No double delete needed
since a filter action delete never "touches the sides on the way
down".

For me it makes complete and final sense of the plug-in.

Mind you, you have to set up a filter for each folder in which
decrypted messages might appear, but that's just a quick copy and
fudge of the original filter.

To decrypt an encrypted message you need to use the decrypt command. Go to
the menus and choose Tools/PGP/PGP decrypt. The password prompt should
appear. Type in your password and hit .

The other way to get at the pgp decrypt command is by right clicking on
the message and go to Specials/PGP decrypt or simply hit Shift-Ctrl-D.

Yes.

When TB! decrypts a message, it creates a decrypted copy and adds it to
the message list. The decrypted message is indicated by "(PGP decrypted)"
being appended to the subject header.

aen> But when I click on check pgp signature,

Checking a signature is really checking the signature in my message here.
This command isn't what you use to decrypt encrypted messages.

Check PGP signature

2001-04-29 Thread ad

Hi,

I've already post that problem a while but as I got no answer and saw a
new faq, here it is again :

so on pgp help page i found :

"To decrypt an encrypted e-mail message from The Bat!, use "Check PGP
signature" command from the Tools menu. If the message is signed, PGP
automatically checks its signature validity. Note that the message is
NOT stored so you need to decrypt it this way each time you read the
message."

But when I click on check pgp signature, It asks for my passphrase and
... nothing !
So i'd like to know what happens to you, I hoped a window opened with
my message decrypted or something like that.

thanks for help
