Re: OT: Sending mail

2001-09-09 Thread Timothy J. Luoma

I understand that he needs to use different SMTP relays depending on
the connection he is using, probably because the relays of his company
and his ISP allow only connections from certain IP addresses. But
anyway, as Timothy hasn't clarified this, we cannot know.

Let me then clarify ;-)

I have a laptop and need to switch my SMTP servers in the morning (when I go to work)
and in the evening (when I get home).

I have two different providers and they will not allow me to relay (which is good for
anti-spam, bad for mobile users).

So I either need an easy way to switch SMTP servers **or** a SMTP server on my own
machine (Dell Inspiron 7500/650mhz/256mb ram/Win2kPro)

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'm keeping a list!

As alternative, you may set on HOST file as :
 xx.xx.xx.xx smtp
 #yy.yy.yy.yy smtp
 ^
 watch here!

xx.xx.xx.xx = smtp address in office
 yy.yy.yy.yy - smtp address at home/ISP.

While at home, just change to :
 #xx.xx.xx.xx smtp
 yy.yy.yy.yy smtp

then put smtp on TB! transport properties.

That's fine, but then I have to restart TheBat as it appears (and I may be wrong) to
read the hosts file only at startup.

I have tried that method before.

Is there a program I can use that will let me set localhost as my
 own SMTP server?

You may run any SMTP (relay) server, such Mercury or others, but this
 will burden your PC.

Ram is cheap. I've got 256 and could easily goto 512

With Mercury, you don't have to switch anything. Just set and forget.
MDaemon is even better with SMTP since it is able to connect to a
smarthost if there are problems achieving a direct e-mail delivery.

Mercury can be toggled on or off-line. It doesn't matter anyway since
if you're off-line it will continue polling in the background without
protest or intrusion. When I used it, I just used to ignore it and
just used TB!. I logged on and off the internet as I wished and
Mercury did its thing.

My personal opinion (And I am a non-techie, I have tried Poscast, Mercury and
several
others.) is for you to try out AutoRoute SMTP (Free) from www.mailutilities.com. You
just
enter the SMTP details in the AutoRoute once and it will detect the SMTP you are
connected
to automatically. In TB you use 'localhost'. No need to select your SMTP manually.

However it uses the ISP's SMTP server and all rules applicable to the ISP will be
applied
to outgoing mails.

Small (really small hence in my definition low on overheads) and very efficient . I
have
tried it for over 6 months and then shifted to ADR for more features.
