Re: Unable to restore from backup to new laptop
Hello Achdut18, Well, having started this thread, I would like to bring it back to my problem: which is synching the use of The Bat on two computers so that I can access my accounts from either computer. You are right, let's get to your problem which, as you have seen, is not easy to solve if at all possible. Well, it would be if you used IMAP, but you are not for that. And I agree with you. ...mail is allowed to remain on the server after download for at least 90 days... I assume this is in your private domain, right? ...with respect to gmail, forever,... And I assume this is with your current setting at Gmail, right? And that you don't want to leave your email at Gmail servers *forever*, right? Otherwise, if you didn't mind, then it would be best to use IMAP. b. mail that is sent from one computer is not seen by the other computer unless I copy myself on the message AFAIK, that is normal using POP accounts, CCing yourself wouldn't be needed with IMAP (I think). c. once gmail is downloaded to one computer, it will not download to the other computer. That's because it is marked as read with the first download. When I look at the gmail settings for my account on the internet, I see that POP is enabled for all mail after a given date in 2006; and that IMAP is enabled. Thus, gmail is set up for BOTH POP and IMAP. That is my setup too, so I can access my email (by IMAP) from my phone and tablet. Have you tried to disable IMAP? I have not tried myself, but maybe doing so the account would just be (or behave) like a normal POP account like in your private domain. Why don't you crate a new Gmail account just for testing this? I like the idea of being able to download the mail to my computer rather than run the risk of having it sit out on a server in the middle of who knows where. Same here. That is why my setting in Gmail is delete Gmail's copy. The only problem, which I don't mind at all, is that after I download messages with TB those messages will not be available from my tablet or phone. So, it seems the only way to ensure that mail on both computers is synched is to use some sort of synching program. On a related thread, Adding The Bat to a new computer on a home network Jack La Rosa recommended www.wuala.com to use for synching folders on two computers. Does everyone agree or do you have other suggestions for this purpose? I do. But I will still suggest creating a second Gmail account, disable IMAP and test. -- Best regards, Miguel A. In my experience TB's internal backkup and restore is totally unreliable, and has been for years. It should either be repaired or removed ! Well, I have used the internal backup and restore facility at several occasions and have never had a problem (since v3 or so). Just did it again on my new office computer earlier this month. I have on several occasions (including, just recently, copying my TB user directories and settings over to a new Win 7 desktop from my not-so-new Win 7 laptop) used the backup/restore functionality with complete success. Obviously, YMMV... These procedures were originally done with V.2.04.7, and have since (maybe the last 5 years or so) been done with V.4.2.44.2. [I still miss using ol' V.2.04.7, though... sniff] I do have to say that, many years ago, with V.2.04.7, I did try incremental (i.e., create an update to an existing archive) backups for a short time (it seemed like a nice idea) and did get flaky results, but I since then (for about the last 14 years now, I think) I have used the complete (i.e., standard) method with complete success. I routinely make two backups - one backup of just my settings and address book, and one a complete backup - every couple of months or so, just for safety's sake. However, when I set up a new installation of a new PC, I make a fresh pair of backups just before restoring TB on the new PC. OK. Anxious to set up TB! on my new laptop, I was unable to wait for a response to my most recent post, and went ahead and followed the advice that Thomas Fernandez gave in his post from Feb. 18, 2014. a. I downloaded the .msi file for thebat_pro_6-0-0.msi to my laptop, as copied from my older computer and ran it. b. I also plugged into the laptop an external hard drive, which had a backup folder with the file, autobackup.tbk. c. When I opened the newly installed TB! on my laptop, I was prompted to designate a location for the data file and specified the default location (The Bat! in Application Data). d. I then was prompted to either set up an account or restore from backup. I restored from the .tbk file on my external hard drive. Initially, I was asked which of my accounts I wanted to restore and specified all of them. e. Next, the Maintenance Center appeared saying Restore is in progress. Please wait - it can be a long process... But almost immediately an access violation pop up appeared. I clicked ok and it disappeared, but the Maintenance Center was left hanging. No progress showed in the window, and I couldn't cancel or delete it. After about a half hour, I used Task Manager to shut down TB!. f. I uninstalled the TB! I also tried to use System Restore to go back to a point in time prior to installation of the TB!. The laptop refused to complete that process and suggested my anti-virus was preventing that from taking place. However, disabling the anti-virus did not resolve this problem, so, I gave up trying to use system restore. g. Since TB! had successfully uninstalled, I tried to reinstall TB! TB! reinstalled, but this time, I was not prompted about which accounts to set up or download from system restore, nor was I prompted to choose a location for the data files. Also, this time, when TB! opened, the folder tree showed all my accounts, but they were all empty! 10. I went to tools/restore in TB! and attempted to restore from the file on the external harddrive. The same thing happened as before: an access violation pop up appeared. This time it reads: Access violation at address 00DE7C52 in module TheBat.exe. Read of address . I clicked OK and exited out of this; however I did leave the maintenance center open even though no progress is appearing in the window. I will leave this where it is at all night, but I expect nothing to come of it. So, why am I getting an access violation message? Does it have anything to do with the fact that the backup was created by ver. 5.8.2 of TB!, but I used the 6.0.0 msi file to set up TB on my laptop? And while this is not, strictly a TB issue, does anyone know why my computer won't go to a restore point that immediately precedes the installation of the software? -- Avi Using The Bat ver. 5.8.2 on Win XP Pro sp3 BUT trying to set up The Bat ver. 6.0.0 on Win 7 Pro, on a Lenovo T430s. Dear tracer, --- tracer / Montag 20.04.2009, 11:53:00 Restore from backup RO Yes, it will even let you choose a specific folder. What about using import? All you then can do wrong is generate duplicates which can be filtered out... This, as I understand, can only be done with a normal MSG file and not with a backup file. -- liebe Grüsse www.EddieCastelli.com Eddie :ec: on Tour Current version is 4.1.11 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Re: Restore from backup
Dear Roelof, --- Roelof Otten / Montag 20.04.2009, 09:35:03 Restore from backup EC What I have done: I started Restore and added the backup file. EC Then I selected out of the 5 checkboxes only the second Messages EC and Folders. I didn't hit return at this moment as I am not sure EC what is coming next. EC Question: does it ask me or let me choose the account also? Yes, it will even let you choose a specific folder. Not quite. In my v4.0.38 it asks first for the file, then the account and here it goes. It restores that whole account without asking which folder. But, it does not overwrite what has being added after the backup. BTW, the problem was as follows. I had moved some Folders to another location. In the Filter I renamed those old folder names to something different but forgot to do so with the folders itself. I guess when I applied the filter those folders where created but did not show (strangely) in the account. Looking with Explorer revealed the folders where there with all the mails in it. But now all is fine. Thanks. -- liebe Grüsse www.EddieCastelli.com Eddie :ec: on Tour Current version is 4.1.11 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Tuesday, February 12, 2002 at 8:33 PM Hi everyone, I'm new and have a couple of questions about The Bat! which I can't seem to answer. Here they are: 1) How do I search through **all mailboxes** for a message? Text in message, sender, etc.? 2) How do I search through a particular mailbox for a message or a particular folder? 3) how to I copy a bit of quotable text to the message I want to write? Thanks everyone! I lost themail in that folder but all other mail retored fine. I have no idea what the problem was but I feel TB! shuld not have stopped there. I started with a complete new installation and TB! started restoring top down, nothing random about that.
