Two questions

2. What is the name of the address book and where is it?

Incoming mail management

2000-11-23 Thread Leonard S. Berkowitz

How can I set theBat so that all incoming mail goes directly to the
Inbox without the intermediate stage where I can choose for each
message read, receive, delete, etc.

I keep my PC on al the time and theBat always running set to check
mail every 10 minutes. However the first attempt that does find mail
just blocks further check until I "execute" the setting in the
intermediate stage.

I've searched through the various choices on the menus and sub-menus
but cannot find the correct setting.

Thanks.

TF This is not a TB problem, but a Windows question. You must associate
TF .html, .shtml, .html and so on files with Netscape (ie make NS the
TF default browser for your system).

TF Go to Windows Explorer / View / (the lowest item on the pop-down menu, forgot the

TF Reply valid for Windows 98.

Thomas,

Your approach did not work, but here is what a friend sent and this
worked:

OK, here's the trick:

Do a Find for the file "prefs.js". If you find more than one, you need only
concern yourself with the most recent time stamp (probably the last time
you used the browser).

Open the file with NOTEPAD.

Find the line:

user_pref("browser.wfe.ignore_def_check", true);

Change the word "true" to "false".

Start Netscape. It should ask if you want to make it the default browser.
Say "Yes" and leave the "don't ask me again" box UNchecked.

Quoting part of a message on reply

2000-12-04 Thread Leonard S. Berkowitz

Is there any way of quoting just part of a message on a reply? Eudora
will (usually) quote just the highlighted portion of the original
message. Is there way to do this in TheBat. I've looked in Option and
Help, but cannot find any information. The only discussion I've found
is whether to use %Quotes or %Text, both of which seem to imply the
original message in its entirety.

Thanks.

Signatures; Margins/wrapping

2000-12-20 Thread Leonard S. Berkowitz

1. Is the only way to insert a signature through the use of templates?
I am not interested in random signatures or cookies. There is an entry
for "signatures" in the help index, but it displays an essay on
templates.

2. The message editor wraps nicely until I go back an insert a word or
two. Then I have to use UtilitiesFormat BlockLeft to fix it. A pain.
Is there a way to set wrapping to be more automatic, like a word
processor? In one instance, I highlighted the entire text and selected
Format Block. Three paragaphs became one and I had to create the
paragraphs again. Another pain. Any tricks here?

Thanks.

Upgrade and transfer help sought.

2004-01-07 Thread Leonard S. Berkowitz
I'd like to upgrade my licensed copy of The Bat to 2.0 from 1.61. On
the RITLABS web site, the implication is that there is an upgrade

I see that there are three versions of 2.0: 2.00.6, 2.01.3 and 2.02.3.
Is there any reason not to download the lastest and greatest?

It happens when I try to copy text from an incoming message, always.

Here is a scenario: Another list to which I subscribe uses the L-Soft
Listserv product. I send a search message. The listserv responds with
extracts of archived messages that qualify, and even sends me the
command to obtain all of the:

GETPOST listname 123456 234567 345678 456789

I'd like to copy that command and paste it into a new message back to
the listserv rather than going the F4 route. When I paste into a new
message, what is pasted is what was on my clipboard previously.

Meanwhile, Allie Martin's suggestion has helped.

Hiding addresses in a group

2005-09-28 Thread Leonard S. Berkowitz
I created a new group, Meeting, under Personal address book for
mailings to about a dozen people who are on a committee. I selected
the group for e-mail, and the To: came up with Meeting list.
However, the recipients did not see Meeting list but the e-mail
addresses for all of the committee members.

I tried selecting the list from the BCC: pane, but only the first name
in the list appeared. Yes, I could select each name individually from
the BCC: pane, but then why do I need a group except to remind me who
is in the group.

So, how do I send e-mail to a predefined group without the recipients
seeing the others addresses?

Thank you.

Strange server error (solved)

2005-11-13 Thread Leonard S. Berkowitz
Last night I posted a query based on the following error:

LSB The server reports error, The response is: 5.7.1 Missing or literal
LSB domains not allowed

None of the information that I received was of much help -- no fault
of people who tried to help. So, in desperation, I copied the message
into Notepad, saved the Notepad file, opened the Notepad file and
copied the message into a new e-mail message. It went out without and
problem.

I think I understand what is going on. The error message has nothing
to do with the To: address. The message that I was sending was from a
person to whom I always have trouble replying, as my (From:) message
is incomplete. That's what was happening here, but since I normally
have the From: unchecked with I compose e-mail, I did not realize
this. Now why my From: address is corrupted is another matter. It
happens only with this individual, so I am not going to lose sleep
over it.

Not sharing address book templates

2005-12-01 Thread Leonard S. Berkowitz
My wife and I use the same computer and the same instance of TheBat.
It wasn't always this way, but for the obvious reasons, I created a
second account for her.

In most New Message, Reply and Forward templates, for the signature, I
have used the macros %FROMNAME or %FROMFNAME. However, for personal
friends, I have typed my nickname as a literal. Since many of these
friends are mutual friends, when my wife sends and e-mail note or
replies to one or forwards one to one of our friends, the message
includes my nickname that she needs to change manually.

There does not seem to be an option to create a second address book
for her account with different templates. Also, double entries for
these friends with different display names, even if it will do the
job, will be confusing.

So, for those cases where the template uses my nickname, how can my
wife steer clear or have her name or her %FROMFNAME (she has no
nickname that I have discovered during the past 49+ years that I have
known her)?

Thanks.

Controlling line length in messages

2005-12-22 Thread Leonard S. Berkowitz
One issue I have noticed in the 3.nn versions of TheBat is that the
length of text lines has increased from about 60 characters to the
width of the screen, expecially in replying to a message that had some
formatting in it. It used to be that alt l would wrap lines that had
become overly long because of the insertion of some text after the
line had wrapped to the next line.

Not only that, but there is a toolbar with all sorts of formatting
options that I normally do not use.

Now this phenomenon has not arisen during the course of writing the
current note and alt l works as it previously had. However, I do
have a formatting tool bar with left justify, center, right justify
and justify icons.

How can I have TheBat work the way it previously did?

Thanks.

Default attributes on reply

2006-04-26 Thread Leonard S. Berkowitz
I find that when I reply to an e-mail note that has both plain text
and HTML components, the formatting in my reply is Courier New, 9
point and various colors as well (I infer this as friends have told me
that my replies are faint, meaning that they are seeing colors in
black and white). In these same replies, things that I have specified
with text and %macros in my default reply template are behaving
properly.

The question is, then: How do I set up replies to be in my standard
font, standard point size, and black only independently of the
attributes of the incoming message?

Thank you.

 Leonard,

I noticed that new behavior with 3.85.03 pro: I think it's a new

My guess is that you're looking for Delete message(s) from text

That did seem to solve the problem, but the text next to the checking

Maybe it's worth trying the following if you haven't already. In your
address book create a folder Called The Bat (or whatever you want) and
add the tbudl@thebat.dutaint.com to that folder. Then, in the folder
settings, put your usual quick templates or whatever in the New
message and Reply boxes and then all your messages to TBUDL will have
 those templates or settings.

Maybe you've already done that, it's hard to tell from your previous

It's also strange that, just with your messages, they arrive about 3
hours after you've sent them so I read all the responses and then your
messages arrive. Since no one else has mentioned it, it must be specific
to me and maybe something Wanadoo is doing to hold them up a bit :-(

Richard,

Hello Leonard,

On Wed, 20 Sep 2006 you wrote in mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

LSB So, if your idea works, will I need a new folder for everyone in my
LSB address book for whom I have specific reply template grin?

Well, in my address book I have 28 different groups. Some of them only
have a few names but others have many. Almost every group has specific
message settings and, in some of the groups, selected individuals have
more personal settings themselves so that, when a message is sent to one
of them, they get their more personalised message whereas others in the
group get the general group message.

So, to answer your question, no, you don't need a new folder for
everyone in your address book but they do need to be in your address
book and either in a folder that already has its own specific mail
sending templates or you do need to give specific people in the address
book the correct templates or details individually for sending messages
so that it all works properly.

For instance this message to you, and all my messages to TB! is sent
using the same template with the standard greeting, quote heading and
sig.

At the same time I could assign you a specific and more personal
template that would override the folder template that would in turn
override the address book template that would override the main general
template.

Honestly it really does seem, as Roelf has said already, that you've got
a setting wrong somewhere and I've been there and done that only
recently because I had a filter setting that suddenly put a message from
a particular person into the trash folder. I swore black and blue that
I'd checked every thing but I hadn't and I had to hang my head in shame!
I suggest you go over everything with a fine tooth comb and I'm willing
to bet my bottom dollar (don't have many anyway) that that's what it'll
be :-)

I have never used any of the spam plugins and so I never paid much
attention to them. But, if what you say about BayesIt is true, then
Ritlabs should pay more attention to what they do and write.

Today I received their newsletter announcing the release of 3.99 and
 it includes this paragraph:

Now that you mention this, I see that there is a BayesIT directory
under the TheBat directory. It was created on August 31, 2005,
probably when I installed an earlier version of TheBat, and then it
was modified in March of this year, apparently when I installed
home_3.98-1. Now, it is empty. I did install 3.99-3 earlier today, and
that may have emptied the directory.

LSB The mystery remains about why the F4 stopped working.

Probably not the same problem I have as F4 works on almost all messages except
for a few. Also F7 brings up the Message finder.

To check what shortcut is set for Reply Quoting Selected Text select
View/Toolbars/Customize and select the Shortcuts Tab. Then select Main
Form/Main Menu/Specials and look for Reply Quoting Selected Text. If its not
 F4
you should be able to change it.

I will try that. Thanks for the tip.

I am also wondering whether this is function (no pun intended) of my
keyboard. F7 is labeled Reply while F4 is labeled New.

AntiSpamSniper 2.0.0.4 Free issues

2008-04-02 Thread Leonard S. Berkowitz
AntiSpamSniper is working over-time. I recently enabled my mail from
TBUDL after not receiving mail for a long time. Now, I've noticed
that mail from posters on the list goes to the Junk folder even when
there is an entry for that person. Not to pick on Rick Grunwald, but
three messages from him from April 1 ended up in Junk. Before I
marked them as Not Junk, I verified that Rick is in the list of
allowed addressees. Right now, I check the Junk folder regularly and
catch these messages, but it is a chore. Rick is not the only person
whose mail behaves this way. A poster on another list repeatedly ends
up in Junk.

Any wisdom about this problem?

Thanks.

The only way that comes to mind is to upgrade to the pro version and
start using OTFE, that will prompt for a password for accessing the
 message base.

I guess I was not clear. I do not want to be prompted for a password

But I'm not sure about the location, as it's an option that isn't

I did not put a lot of energy in pursuing this issue as, oddly

When I reply (usually via f4), the reply is addressed to, for example:

Mortimer Snerd msn...@gmail.com

That will always bounce. However, if I change the reply addressee to

msn...@gmail.com

the e-mail message will travel smoothly to its destination.

(apologies if there really is a Gmail user with the name of Mortimer
Snerd)

Can anyone explain this phenomenon?

bounces, but does not bounce when I send it from my wife's account.

Version 5.0.20.1 on Windows 7 (Does this not appear in my signature?)

Restarted theBat: same result
Rebooted and restarted theBat: same result

Along the way in my trying to figure this out, I notice that in
certain contexts, the computer thinks that I am in Hebrew mode. I do
use Hebrew quite a lot, but hardly ever in theBat. To change to Hebrew
mode, I use the language toolbar. I only mention this because as I was
typing my reply above, I was suddenly in Hebrew mode and had to switch
back to English.

Many thanks.

Thanks for your continued interest. I did solve the problem, however.
It was related to the Hebrew issue.

The other day, I installed a Hebrew add-in to MS Word. It was not
working. The support rep suggested that I change my regional setting
in Control Panel to Hebrew (Israel) from English (United States). That
led to the problem, although I am not quite sure how. When I finally
got the addi-in working, I changed the region back to English and the
addressing problem in theBat disappeared.

As for 5.0.36, I usually wait until I receive a notice from Ritlabs.
Should I do so anyway (anyway that I have not received a notice and
anyway that I have solved my addessing problem)?

Thanks. I will look into this.

Missing buttons

2012-07-06 Thread Leonard S. Berkowitz
In Editing Mode, the buttons in the group on the very left have
suddenly disappeared. Must be something that I hit accidentally. This
is the group that contains Send Now. I poked around in the Toolbar
maintenance, but did not see anything that applies.

How can I restore these buttons?

Thanks.

It was and it still is. Thanks.

Meanwhile, I was able to get the immediately command to appear in

 Close TB
 Go to your mail directory
Rename the file tbuser.def to tbuser.def.old
 Start TB

Thanks. Worked like a charm.

That will remedy this. However, it will also delete all shortcuts and
 interface changes that you made.

Not a problem for me.

Backup

2012-09-11 Thread Leonard S. Berkowitz
Now that I have been able to restore theBat from the backup, I have
some questions.

1. It seems that the only thing that I can figure is where to keep the
backup itself. Is there anything else that I can control, like when
the backup is to run?

2. Is there some way to run a backup more than once a day?

3. Is there any logging of the operation of a backup?

Thanks.

Sure, but not with the auto backup. I'm using an event in the
taskmanager to do my backups. You can set such an event to run every
five minutes if you need that many backups. ;-)

Ha, ha!

Thinking more about the backup, to which I had not paid much
attention, I do have a way of having a second utility run a backup.

What happens if I am using theBat when the backup starts? Will it
fail? or will the user hang until the backup compleres or gets beyond
a ceratin pint? Will there be one or more messages that are in a
dirty state and will not be backed up? And other negative effects?

Mail collection will continue, but I'm not sure whether messages that
are being received actually will end up in the backup. My guess is
that messages that are destined for folders that aren't backupped yet,
will be included in the backup, but messages that are destined for
folders that were processed by the backup process will be ignored.

That's what I would have figured. I think that the first thing I need
to do is to schedule a back up at a time certain (certain = that I am
aware of what time it starts) and then see whether I can infer from
the backup file's attributes how long the process takes. Then I can
schedule theBat's back up and my separate back up in a way that will
have the least impact on users.

Many thanks for you comments.
