[Texascavers] Adios TexasCavers List

2016-07-08 Thread Frank Binney via Texascavers
I¹m unsubscribing from the Texas Cavers list and offer some parting
thoughts:

€ I¹ve really appreciated all the time, effort, and dollars‹often
unsung‹that Charles Goldsmith has put into keeping the list up and running
all these many years. It¹s a real service to the caving community and I¹m
amazed the list self-moderates as well as it does.

€ My personal challenge is that I subscribe to a number of email lists; some
work-related, others community-related or special interest-related (caving,
birding, etc.). When someone on one of the lists starts over-posting
off-topic emails, I have to weight the time cost and hassle of constantly
deleting those posts against the value of staying subscribed.

€ At one time the TexasCavers list provided the most convenient and timely
way‹if not the only way--to stay in touch with far-flung Texas caving
friends and find out about recent discoveries and upcoming events. Now
social media‹in particular Facebook‹fulfills many of these needs. So I¹ll
stay in touch with many of you via the various caving-related Facebook
pages, and for those of you not on Facebook we can hopefully catch up in
person at TCR or the NSS Convention.

€David Locklear has written some very entertaining posts over the years.
I¹ve especially enjoyed the accounts of his Quixotic attempts to reach
distant caving events or of his memories of caver encounters back in the
day. Many of his more frequent posts, however, seem better suited to a
personal Facebook feed or a non-caving listserv.

Look forward to seeing many of you later this month in Ely, or in October at
Paradise Canyon,
Frank

Well..time has come and I didn't hear from a couple of you all. On my way back
to good old Texas and the Rio Grande Valley. Back home. I enjoyed my stay in
California.
And I apologize if this is not cave related anymore. Sorry.

Hi Charles!

Many thanks for posting the rules. I am sure I must have read them in the way
back when I first joined.

Having not read these rules in many years, I made the wrong assumption that
topics posted here must be cave(r)-related.

Like you, I take advantage of the warning David provides to "delete now" if I
am not interested.

Again, thank you for re-posting the link to the 4 simple rules to follow while
a member of this listserv.

And, many thanks for remaining our thoughtful moderator. I very much appreciate
the time you put into making this listserv function.

Happy caving!

We have 4 rules: http://texascavers.com/rules.html

David hasn't broken any rules and no, he's older than me Bob.

I maintain the rules as list owner, that's it. I've always stated that this
list is self moderated. If you don't like a post that someone has sent out,
send them a private message if possible.

If you don't like the list and how it's run, anyone is free to step up and take
over, including hosting and paying. Or, it's just easier to delete a message
and go about enjoying your day. Personally, that's what I do.

However, I concur that this listserv has a clear intention of being used for

I know David L posts comments on the various Texas cave-related Face Book pages.

Perhaps the moderator of this listserv could politely suggest that David post

Oh, I don't know, Frank. I think there is a greater need being served by
allowing such posts to occur without rancor. Some find them interesting and
amusing, and it's always easy to punch the delete key. If it's so inconvenient
to clean out your inbox of uninvited martial that is disagreeable, you may need
to examine some of your own demons.

Re: [Texascavers] robots in today's news

2016-07-08 Thread Herman Miller via Texascavers
This robot was no more autonomous than a predator drone in iraq. What it
did we have been doing on a near daily basis since 9/11. When predator
drones were initially armed there was a lot of talk about whether it
violated the Geneva conventions or not. After deliberation it was found
that it was in concordance. Are there autonomous "robots" capable of using
lethal force; most definitely. There are FLIR controlled weapon mounts
that will fire indescriminantly and without input from a controller. The
idea of strapping an explosive to a remote controlled vehicle is nothing
new.
