Talking face to face is faster, at least for me to grasp what's on the JK
side of the world... And of course I'm not saying that we are not going to
participate on the ml... C'mon... Get real :) :) :)

Or is there a conspiracy around here to prevent me from going on the French
Alps and visit Chambery (which is a _really_ beautiful town) :) :) :)

You want to trade a visit to Chambery, France, up in the Alps with a warm
pasta dish with a computer screen? _YOU_ARE_DUMB :) :) :)

There are things I don't know about JK and I might want to learn, and there
may be things about WEBAPP that I might share... For sure a face-to-face
conversation with one of the guys that KNOWS that thing is the best for me
(me, not you, I'm freakin' selfish, so what?)...

Are you scared I'm going to steal developers out of your hands??? Hahahaha

Be sure that there is nothing hidden :-)

Pier Parent's live not too long from Chambery and I just proposed him
that if he pass near my town to stop and have a diner at home where
he could eat some 'Pasta Fresca con peperoni' prepared by my wife
(which is italian).

It's an invitation that all decent Italian couldn't refuse ;)

The discussion of mod_jk/mod_webapp will be open on tomcat-dev.

Merging mod_jk/mod_webapp (was [VOTE] New Committer: Amy Roh)

2001-03-16 Thread Dan Milstein

It would be nice to have this dicussion on tomcat-dev. I do think I have a
useful understanding of mod_jk to offer, but I'm not going to be in France
(and I'm not on the private thread)...

Not that we have to have that conversation now, but I would like to be
involved when/if it happens.

Well, maybe a better place to meet would be tomcat-dev, isn't it ?

I'm sure Dan Milstein would enjoy a French vacation ( I would ), but
so far mod_jk was developed by a larger group on tomcat-dev. Dan and Henri
are doing most of the work maintaining mod_jk, and Larry and Nacho ( and
Marc on the 3.2 branch) are doing most of the work maintaining tomcat -
but they are not the only people working on either mod_jk or the
container.

That's the spirit of "community" and open source, isn't it ... Ok, I'll

I still think it would be a good idea to merge mod_jk and mod_webapp, even

getting them into mod_jk will be good for the users - and that's what
matters.

That's "bribing" the boss (but for real, how can he _really_ commit code
from under 6 feet of snow stranded on the east coast and with basically no
email access), Craig, one day you'll have to share the secret...

I strongly agree with you... Just to make the long story short, it's true,
tomcat 4.0 seems to be a "Sun" corporate project... Indeed at Sun there is a
plan for it (TC4.0 is in J2EE 1.3), but most of us working in the team were
there _before_ we were even working there... Catalina, so far, started years
ago when Craig was working on Jserv 2.0, and was working somewhere else,
regarding me and Remy, well, we have a different story, but most of us were
not at Sun when TC4.0 started... And we were already somehow "involved" in
it. I believe we were just lucky to find a company willing to pay us to
maintain our current involvement in the open source community "for real"...
It would be like saying that Apache 2.0 is a "Covalent" project... C'mon
guys... :) :) :)

You're right and personaly I only focus on the little part
of web-connector for tomcat's project. I only cross working
on RPM packaging where I'm present in many (not all)
jakarta and xml projects

I spend more time on Tomcat 3.2/3.3 since I saw larger support
for Tomcat 4.0 from Sun.
As a old hacker I feel better working on projects with individuals
(like costin, nacho, larry or dan) than large projects like TC 4.0
with company team

First of all, I would like to thank to everyone who voted +1 for me becoming a

happy that I no longer need to bug Craig or Remy to commit my code for me. :-)

And for response to Gomez "Personal to Amy, are you agree working also on TC

Has every committer for this project been contributing to ALL TOMCAT current
projects? Personally, I don't quite understand the need for contribution
to *EVERY* branch of tomcat from an EACH committer nor the ability for a
developer to focus on different branches at the same time unless you're a
superman (Craig for example):-)

I think our focus should be on making Tomcat a better product rather than
focusing on which version should get more attention. However, that's just my
humble opinion...

I strongly disagree -- if Amy is going to focus on 4.x, I think that's
absolutely fine. We don't need every developer to work on all three
branches -- we need enough developers committed to supporting each branch
we're serious about releasing and maintaining. Adding someone who is going
to focus on 4.x in no way impedes our support for 3.2/3.3. That is why the
clear vote about who was going to work to support 3.3 was so useful -- some
people are focusing on 3.3, some people are not. That's fine.

I have not yet done much (read: any) work on 4.x. Does this mean that I am
not fully contributing to the Tomcat project? I don't think so -- some of
the project's programmers are currently working on pushing 3.3 towards
release, some are working towards getting 3.2.2 out (go Marc!), and some are
working on 4.x. There is some overlap, but I do not think it is important
that everyone work on every branch.

Please, please, please, let's not get into another debate about 3.x vs 4.x
-- I am really enjoying this list being useful again, and not clogged with
flame wars.

I happened to be in the same situation with Amy - my account was created
without "frequent or valuable" contribution from my part.

It is very hard to get involved in such a project, with all the flames,
so many smart people around who will read your mails in all possible ways,
all kind of conflicting requirements. Not to mention the peer review.

I could say a lot about this - but the short answer is that I'll vote

+1

and I would love to see more people working for other companies in jobs
involving tomcat and willing to become commiters, and this vote will make
it easier for them to do so.

I agree with Dan.

Glab to see so many Sun employees involved in an OpenSource
project like Tomcat ;-) But since there is 3 tomcat open projects
each one need attention.

Personal to Amy, are you agree working also on TC 3.3 ?

I agree with you totally. Since several of the folks involved (Pier,
Remy, Justyna, and Amy) work for me, we're very conscious of this issue,
and emphasize communicating through the public lists on issues related to
features and bug fixes. We do have internal-to-Sun meetings on a weekly
basis, but they have more to do with Sun's own uses of Tomcat and related
technologies (such as the fact that Tomcat 4.0-beta-1 is inside the J2EE
1.3 beta that was recently released) than anything else.

I'm happy to see you taking your responsibilities seriously.

Actually, I have a lot of empathy with where you're coming from. Prior
to joining Sun (almost exactly a year ago), I was active in the Apache
JServ project, at the time when the contribution of Tomcat to the Apache
Software Foundation was first announced. One of the things that
attracted me to Sun (and in turn made me attractive to the company) was
the opportunity to ensure that we played by the rules of the Apache
community. I'm happy to say that Sun has been *very* receptive to that
message, as have the individuals involved in the various open source
projects.

Sounds good -- I looked through the archives and found the messages which I
had missed. Thanks for clearing that up -- I'll happily convert to +0 (I
still don't feel like I've seen enough of her changes myself to vote +1, but
it looks like plenty of other people have, which is great).

Going ahead, it would be good for folks working at Sun to be careful about
passing bug fixes among each other rather than on the list (I realize you
say that below, but I do want to emphasize it). Speaking as a volunteer,
it's very important that I feel that I am fully involved in the process
(i.e. that the volunteers are in no way second-class citizens).

I'm sorry if I'm belaboring this -- I don't think this instance is a
particularly big deal, but I do think it's an important area to be careful
about.

Two specific things she has contributed (via posting to the list) were
porting the Application Developer's Guide from 3.2 to 4.0 (which has been
integrated) and several additions to the "tester" app (which have been
posted on TOMCAT-DEV but not yet committed -- my fault because I was on
the East Coast for the last two weeks.

She has also reported several bug fixes directly to other committers (not
through the list -- you're right about appropriate guidelines, and they
should have been posted as patches).

Re: [VOTE] New Committer: Amy Roh

2001-03-12 Thread Dan Milstein

I have to say that I am a bit uncomfortable with this. The guidelines on
the website say (http://jakarta.apache.org/site/roles.html):

"Developers who give frequent and valuable contributions to a subproject of
the Project can have their status promoted to that of a "Committer" for that
subproject."

It sounds like Amy has contributed good work which people at Sun have seen,
but, as a developer who only communicates via the list, I haven't seen
anything she's done (I haven't missed any things she's submitted, have I? I
have this vague memory of ezmlm complaining about not being able reach me).
I'm also not clear if her documentation and test cases are part of the TC
4.x code base or part of the JSP spec (since she's working on the
"JSP/Servlet Team")

I don't want this to turn into a Sun-bashing thread -- I think it is
*fantastic* that Sun is giving excellent developers a chance to work
full-time on an open source Tomcat. And I would love to have more people
who can contribute to the project.

But I think those guidelines are important -- in terms of our social
organization, I think it is reasonable to require a new developer to submit
patches and ideas to the list at large, so that, when they are proposed as a
committer, everyone can feel that they're voting for a known quantity.

Furthermore, since I've been involved, that process has actually occurred
very quickly (which I think is great). Once someone has contributed a few
solid patches, everyone is ready to give them commit access.

If I'm missing part of the story, I'd be happy to change my mind, but I
guess I'm -1 until I can better understand what Amy's "frequent and valuable
contributions" have been.

[VOTE] New Committer: Amy Roh

2001-03-12 Thread Craig R. McClanahan

Amy has recently joined the JSP/Servlet team at Sun, and has contributed
several documentation updates and new tests for the test harness. She
would like to work on bug fixes, as well as participate in the development
of better admin tools, primarily on the Tomcat 4.0 code base.

Votes please?
