Re: [Trisquel-users] Is this Librem13 fully free this time?
There is a new update on Phoronix: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_itempx=Librem-15-Rev-2-Coreboot However, I don't consider this to be a significant step in the right direction as there would have to be proof first that they really installed coreboot.

I made my decision to leave facebook public, while suggesting Diaspora as an easy replacement. So far, one person switched, and I'm talking about a libre computing enthusiast... Either way, in a few weeks, I'll delete my account. I'll try to convince my other contacts without being heavy about it, and without sounding like a conspirationist freak. I'll have to make sure my communication comes across properly. And convincingly.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 'Abrowser' behaves strangely after a system update.
The problem was due to the gcc version used to build firefox. An updated package is avaliable for testing here: http://jenkins.trisquel.info/jenkins-repos/belenos/abrowser_39.0+build5-0ubuntu0.14.04.1+7.0trisquel39_i386.deb You can download and install it with: wget http://jenkins.trisquel.info/jenkins-repos/belenos/abrowser_39.0+build5-0ubuntu0.14.04.1+7.0trisquel39_i386.deb sudo dpkg -i abrowser_39.0+build5-0ubuntu0.14.04.1+7.0trisquel39_i386.deb
Re: [Trisquel-users] 'Abrowser' behaves strangely after a system update.
I am myself not much experienced with apparmor profiles, but being Icecat (or Icecactus as I recently started to call it, hmm..) based on FF (just like Iceweasel and Abrowser) the profiles shouldn't differ much. In Icecat your connection gets routed through Tor when you are in private browsing mode. If you are just viewing cats and dogs pictures it it perfectly fine to use it. But if you are doing anything important, compromising, vital etc.. use the Tor BB! You shouldn't mix your standard browser with tor. Fingerprinting techniques are much easier on Icecat because not many people use it. Another thing is, if you read the how to stay anon on the Tor website it will clearly explain you that installing addons on Tor can completely screw you anonymity. So if you have installed, say, jap dictionary plugin.. you may have problems. Tor Browser Bundle is used by many people and basically all the TBBs are identical so no fingerprinting techniques can be used against you. Make sure you set Tor to the strictes setting in privacy and sec settings, that is to say, make sure you completely disable javashit.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Advertising Trisquel FLOSS
sure jxself but it is no more available. You can't purchase one anymore. You can still buy one and then pay for the libreboot installation service though.. I wonder if this service includes the removal of the ME and AMT or just the libreboot installation.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is this Librem13 fully free this time?
Probably true if he does make it completely freedom based it would be for other reasons... although, I wish he was not a fraud. but alas can't always have what you want. :)

the removal of the ME and AMT i have installed libreboot on my x60 myself are there other restrictive features in these machines even after installing libreboot? do you need to do more?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Advertising Trisquel FLOSS
Hmm..you are right hack and hack. The X60 doesn't have AMT and the ME is disabled. I should have checked that before posting my previous comment. My bad. The question applies to the X200 - if I buy an X200 on ebay or somewhere else for cheap and send it to the gluglugs guys, is the removal of the nastiness included in the service or just the installation of libreboot? Also how good is the thinkpad X60? Can it play a good quality 720p movie without stuttering and such. What about the high temperatures issue? I read several guys were lamenting the high temps. And also the overly high use of the CPU. How good is it?

[Trisquel-users] Thumbs-up to Chris ThinkPenguin!
In a previous posting, I detailed my plans for building an Intel NUC BOXD54250WYK1, and enquired regarding various Atheros WiFi cards. After speaking with ThinkPenguin (via email, regarding various other topics), I was reminded of the absolute brilliant customer service which the ThinkPenguin team employs. While though less expensive cards with an Atheros chipset could be found elsewhere, supporting ThinkPenguin (an asset to the Trisquel community) held much more value. I rang Chris, this morning, and while the business end (read: ordering the WiFi card) of the conversation took but a few minutes, we spoke for almost an hour regarding software freedom across the proverbial map (from large tech companies, to automobile manufacturers). To Chris, and everyone at ThinkPenguin, thank you! Your work is much appreciated! Cheers
Re: [Trisquel-users] Advertising Trisquel FLOSS
Also how good is the thinkpad X60? Can it play a good quality 720p movie without stuttering and such. definitely What about the high temperatures issue? I personally don’t have this problem i imagine its due to some x60 collecting dust over time but you can always clean them out And also the overly high use of the CPU. How good is it? the cpu is fine i run trisquel 7 on myn(not mini) with no problems and it can play games like for example hedgehog wars or teeworlds or mintest or openarena its a good machine
Re: [Trisquel-users] Data protection vs useability
So the whole point is to be able to download the torrent file anonymously? it would not rely be anonymous as the pirate-bay only gives links to torrents you download outside the tor network the reason why i use the .onion link is in some country’s including myn the pirate-bay is censored and tor can bypass the censorship

Re: [Trisquel-users] Is this Librem13 fully free this time?
I'm really getting sick of this guy is all I can say. He's doing nothing for those who actually care about freedom. If he had a laptop out and wasn't claiming freedom I'd not be so annoyed. However he is taking advantage of people who aren't getting the information they need to make an informed choice and then being defrauded at that. There *are* people working on freedom respecting hardware- or working to release code-or otherwise clean up code- or reverse engineer. None of these people have ever gotten any credit. Not in any meaningful way. For Todd to swoop in and claim he's done something when he's not is sickening.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Complete solution for online privacy
Interesting, though it doesn't suit me for several reasons : - When overseas, it implies the server is always on. I'd rather have a smaller server I can move around (think yunohost on a Beaglebone Black, which I have yet to try). I'd rather cut everything when I'm away (it might not burn or anything, but why take the risk? Also, If I have a power outage, I'll probably will have to turn it back up, even though it's can probably be automated. Also this way, my data is physically close to me). - I was told that having my own instance of OpenVPN means I'm the only user, thus my privacy isn't too good, even if it's encrypted. I didn't dig too much on this one, I might be wrong. But it seems to make sense since what goes out of the VPN is only me, not me and other users. - it looks hard to set up. Yunohost seems easier.

[Trisquel-users] Ars Technica wrongly affiliates Stallman with open source
dh...@openmailbox.org wrote: I also wonder if it would be wise to go to The Free Software Foundation or RMS and ask them to make a public comment to possibly get the word out. I read the article and I didn't see a link to the FSF's announcement of this alleged partnership with Crowd Supply. This is troubling as one would typically point to a document proving what the article claims is true, particularly when dealing with a net savvy organization such as the FSF. I noticed that the title of the article describes whatever the FSF is doing as a blessing upon open hardware-focused crowdfunding site, and says that Stallman is known by many in the open source worlds (how many worlds is that, exactly?). Yet Stallman consistently replies to people that ask him questions framed in terms of the open source movement by replying he doesn't do anything open because that gives people the idea he stands for or with the open source movement which he does not[1]. Author Sean Gallagher goes on to conflate the difference further by saying open (or Libre) hardware yet open (a reference to open source) and Libre (free as in freedom) are not the same thing, in fact the open source movement was defined to never discuss software freedom which is at the heart of the free software movement's message and actions. Gallagher claims Stallman is not the sort of person you'd expect to endorse a product yet Stallman's own organization has (for a couple of years now) run a product endorsement program known as Respects Your Freedom hardware certification where the FSF lists criteria and the list of endorsed products at https://fsf.org/ryf. And on top of all this there's a typo in the caption underneath Stallman's picture (not enough proofreading, I guess). I quickly became suspicious that this article is highly inaccurate because Gallagher apparently understands his subject far less than he should. I wouldn't be surprised if this alleged endorsement was actually something vaguely supportive Stallman said about Crowd Supply and Gallagher is trying to reframe this as an endorsement and a partnership. Or maybe what Stallman really talked about was Crowd Supply's using free Javascript code thereby complying with the FSF's campaign to use only free Javascript. This is good for Crowd Supply and its users but this really needs primary source backing in the form of a link to an FSF webpage so we know what the FSF actually says about Crowd Supply. It's hardly surprising that the comments on this article are a joke, much like what passes for insightful or informative on Slashdot, another corporate repeater site. [1] Read https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-software-for-freedom.html and http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/open-source-misses-the-point.html for more. Or skip to the QA part of any talk on https://audio-video.gnu.org/ and listen for someone who apparently didn't pay much attention to the talk ask something about Stallman being a part of open source. There's usually someone who does this despite Stallman's patient in-depth explanation of how the older free software movement differs from the younger open source movement.

Thanks, I'll check it out once I update avconv (youtube-dl doesn't work without this updated). For now I went with the how (simple and easy), the why is harder. Besides gathering facts and making all that compact enough to have enough punch (without being sensationalist), I don't see other options. No idea what the what can be, I'll check the video at some point anyway.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Data protection vs useability

Anyone know where I can sftp up the new files. I've been doing work but sf.net's file release system has been down for 2 weeks now with no end in sight. I want to put the files up so people can use the new features (city generation). Some screenshots attached. all buildings have interiors (I've been making them over years). Everything is opensource, gpl, ofcourse.
Re: [Trisquel-users] FCC Rules might force Wifi router vendors to lockdown their firmware!
To be honest, I'm inclined to expect this to be the case... I mean, the new rule in question is actually a year old (even though devices can still be sold under the old rules for another year, if I read the page correctly), so if freedom-respecting firmware is forbidden because of it, why hasn't the FSF or EFF said anything about it? I think it's ridiculous that the FCC would require certain hardware to be defective by design; if some modifications can cause a problem, those behaviors themselves should be made illegal, and the only thing vendors should be required to do, maybe, is inform consumers that those behaviors are illegal. Still, it looks to me like the fear of alternative operating systems being forbidden might be unjustified.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Data protection vs useability
What's that onion link? it doesn't seem to work for me. I've read about some pirate browser, which seems overkill with a VPN. As for the big list of adresses/servers, how do I know that I'm on a trustworthy one? I mean there's are the only official versions? While we're on the subject, what's that GNUnet thing? I see it's some kind of file-sharing model, which has it's own GUI peer. Anyone uses that?

[Trisquel-users] Closest thing to a FLOSS tablet ?
Hi Everyone I have been writing two programs to help disabled children communicate, they are FLOSS. I have one running on Trisquel with a large touchscreen monitor. It's okay but it's a fight to get it into the school. Something that could go in a child's bag would be much easier politically. There are lots of tablets on the market in the $100-$300 range, in reach of many families. I am not aware of a tablet that runs Linux. I see Android, IOS and Windows. Android is billed as open source but I don't see how anyone can create free software with a closed source IDE and I am starting to feel that Windows is actually the least evil of the 3 in that it does not pretend to be a FLOSS product, obviously I will also hate this platform as well. Is there anythign running just GNU/Linux. I have heard of Cyanogenmod and it might be do the job but if I could use just plain GNU/linux that would be best. -Patrick
