Re: [Trisquel-users] Help needed - Cannot log in trisquel after external harddisk not ejected properly
Thanks for reply.. :) The keyboard layout was changed after defining the password. I am able to log in through terminal and change the password through sudo passwd command. the problem still persists as i am unable to log in to Graphical interface even if i click alt+f7 after logging in through terminal (i am shown the same enter password page). I have tried entering password in both layouts, it seems the password is not the problem as it does not show invalid password error in red. It tries to accept it but loops back to the same screen. i am new to gnulinux and unable to follow 3rd paragraph. what will following the last line achieve ?
[Trisquel-users] Re : Help needed - Cannot log in trisquel after external harddisk not ejected properly
You do not need the third paragraph that is about getting a root terminal on your system without inputting any password (e.g., if you had forgotten it). Since you managed to execute 'sudo passwd' and the problem is not solve, I now see that it has nothing to do with the password. It looks like your X server gets killed when you try to launch the desktop. There may be relevant information at the end of /var/log/Xorg.0.log that you can read from the terminal: $ less /var/log/Xorg.0.log You can as well copy (with 'cp') /var/log/Xorg.0.log to a USB key and show it to us. You can try to add a user (named "banana" in my example) and see if you can graphically log with this user: $ sudo adduser banana

Re: [Trisquel-users] Is there a shut down log, and where can I find it ?
Being leery of executing "sudo rm /etc/rc*/*apache2" with the wildcard rc*, instead I went to each /etc/rc?.d directory in turn (rc0.d through rc6.d) and executed "sudo mv K09apache2 /dev/null" after which "find /etc/rc* -name '*apache*'" produced no output. Then, being curious, I executed "find /*/* -name '*apache*'" which I do not recommend that anyone do unless they have the time to undo the result, which is a near infinite list of files, scripts, "permission denied" and the like. It did reach a conclusion, after which I closed the console. Preparing to come here to report my success in ridding the system of apache, I found that the terminal could not be re-opened. Upon executing a restart I was greeted with the biggest blinky screen of all, detailing every aspect of my transgression. After the restart everything works OK again. However, the README file in each /etc/rc?.d directory provides a clue to the mechanism by which a shutdown log could be created: "The scripts in this directory are executed once when entering runlevel "?". The scripts are all symbolic links whose targets are located in /etc/init.d/ . Generally it is not necessary to alter the scripts in this directory. Their purpose is to stop all services and to make the system ready for shutdown." I added the wildcard "?" to signify "0" through "6". There is also a directory /etc/rcS.d/ but that is for startup scripts, and it had no reference to apache. Poking around on the Internet, I found this page: http://askubuntu.com/questions/416299/execute-command-before-shutdown-reboot Where it says in part: > To execute a script at shutdown or reboot: > >save your script in /etc/rc6.d >Make it executable: sudo chmod +x K99_script > > Notes: > >The script in rc6.d must be with no .sh extension >The name of your script must begin with K99 to run at the right time. >The scripts in this directory are executed in alphabetical order. This advice was in reference to the need to shut down forgotten VM's in an orderly fashion. What I need to do will probably require that the script open a file at the beginning of shutdown for input during the shutdown, meaning that such script should be named with the prefix K01_script. Now I just need to dream up that script ... with the caveat that saving the input from freshclam to a log file has to be suppressed. I'll start here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/471285/how-to-create-execute-a-script-file

Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing Trisquel and gentoo on another drive, grub required?.
I installed Debian 8 on a USB stick when it came out in May and if I remember correctly at the end of the installation it asked me if I wanted to install grub so, not being sure I clicked "no" and that resulted in an unbootable Debian stick.. So I reinstalled and answered "yes" to "install grub" and was asked to choose the hard disk on which to install it (either my lappy hard drive or the USB stick itself - I selected my hard drive and that way the grub on my hard drive just got updated with the entry for booting Debian from the USB.. cheers
Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing Trisquel and gentoo on another drive, grub required?.
I don't think so. GRUB only needs to be installed on the master boot record of the first hard drive (or whatever media you have decided to set as the boot media- this is usually /dev/sda or something of that sort), and (if configured correctly) it will be able to boot into any installed operating system on any other media, handing control over to it. Try installing Ututo on the second hard drive- it will probably have options related to dual-boot/disk partitioning in the installer, and will (hopefully) work out of the box, probably setting up its own grub.cfg. If GRUB doesn't recognise, you can always rectify the situation by chrooting into the second drive from the first, so you should be able to get it to work one way or another. Give it a go, and tell us what happens.

Re: [Trisquel-users] MacBook 1,1 to Libreboot in software way
So in theory Libreboot can run on practically anything? Is it just that most BIOS ROMs are protected against flashing by software, so that Libreboot can in practice only be installed on certain devices which lack reflashing protection? Is that why Libreboot is only supported on a rather small number of devices?

[Trisquel-users] Helping new users choose application software
Greetings. The first thing I want to say is that I really appreciate all the work that goes into Trisquel. I value being able to download and use a fully free code OS, which is user-friendly enough to be installed for GNUbies (GNU newbies ;), to replace Windows versions as old as XP (or maybe even older). I appreciate that the applications software that comes bundled with a default Trisquel install is generally stable, user-friendly, and covers most users' everyday needs. Since I can't contribute to free code software by programming it (at least not yet), I try to contribute by giving thoughtful feedback from a user perspective, in the hopes that this will help developers and maintainers improve it. The issue I want to address today is the methods available for installing new software from the Trisquel repositories. I'm going to start by describing my suggested solution, then explain the problem I believe my solution will solve. In short, I propose that the difficulty level involved in installing an application should give some clue as to how user-friendly the application is. AFAIK there are only three ways to install applications from the Trisquel repos: * Add/Remove Programs: Any new GNU/Linux user who installs Trisquel will use AR/P a lot, at least at first, because A/RP is prominent in the start menu, and will be one of the first things new users see when they click the Trisquel icon on the start bar. Any applications offered here should be graphical, stable, and GNUbie-friendly. * Synaptic Package Manager: Synaptic is a little more confusing, as it doesn't distinguish between user applications and other kinds of software, or between user-facing applications, and the various back-end packages they are made up of. However, it does have a GUI interface, so slightly more experienced users might venture into using Synaptic if they can't find what they're looking for in A/RP. Any applications offered here should be graphical and stable. * Apt-get install: this requires a user to be comfortable opening a terminal and using the command line, remembering to use 'sudo', and knowing the exact package name of the application they want to install. I've been using GNU/Linux as a desktop OS for over a decade, and I still sometimes struggle with this. Any application in the repo can be installed this way, including command-line only apps, and experimental alpha and beta software, which is fine. Anyone who installs software this way is most likely prepared to cope with any problems that may come up. I know I'm proposing a major change from the way package installation is currently done, which might require major changes to somehow mark available applications according to three classifications (suitable for GNUbies, suitable for intermediate users, suitable for experts). Why do this? To illustrate what I'm proposing, I recently installed these four applications using A/RP: Hydrogen, Transcriber, FreeBirth, and FreeWheeler. * Hydrogen: the version in the repos is beta software (0.9.6beta3), 9.6 was released over a year ago. The graphical UI (user interface) is mature, and intuitive enough that I could figure out how to start using it just by playing around. Even running the beta seems pretty stable, and from a look at the project homepage, the development community appears to be active. This is an example of a good application to make available in A/RP. * Transcriber: the version in the repos (1.5.1) was released more than two years ago, and the package has been obseleted by TranscriberAG. The UI is graphical, but not optimized for GNUbies, for example, testing the stability was hard because I couldn't find my file partition using the open file dialogue (not even under /media or /mnt), and had to copy a speech file to the desktop because I could test with it. When I did manage to load the speech file, it loaded and played fine, so stability seems to be fine. This is an example of a good application to make available in Synaptic, but too rough-around-the-edges to be in AR/P. * FreeWheeling is also experimental software (0.6-2) and the UI barely qualifies as graphical. No instructions are available, and the program won't even load the UI if JACK hasn't been started first. Another look at SourceForge suggests this may be a dead project too. This is an example of an application to make available only by apt-get install, or *maybe* Synaptic, but it certainly should *not* be available from AR/P. * FreeBirth: the version in the repos, 0.3.2, was released in 2008. There are no bundled instructions, and no link to any. The UI is so bad I can't even figure out how to make it start. If it's the green button above the yellow button with the pause icon on it, that one just makes the app crash. A web search for "FreeBirth" brings up a SourceForge project, which says its alpha software, and appears

[Trisquel-users] UNetbootin won't install on Trisquel 7
I'm having problems installing UNetbootin on Trisquel 7. It's listed in Add/Remove Applications, but when I try to tick the check box, it just gives me the spinning beach ball of death. I tried using apt-get install but it just says no such package. Does anyone know what's going on here? I would prefer to install the "Freenetbootin" fork that's been discussed on this forum. Any progress on getting that into the repos?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7 feedback (with hardware details)
Compiz was experimented with in Trisquel 6, but it turned out to cause problems with accessibility, so Trisquel 7 returned to just using Metacity by default.
Re: [Trisquel-users] My new trisquel rig!
Beneath a Steel Sky has been released under a libre license, as have Flight of the Amazon Queen and a few others. Both of their licenses forbid selling copies of the games by themselves, but you can work around that by bundling them with any other unrelated file, like a simple Hello World program. The FSF accepted the SIL Open Font License as libre on this basis.
Re: [Trisquel-users] My new trisquel rig!
As for the confusion, I think (if I remember correctly) that it's mostly because you do actions by right-clicking, not left-clicking (left-clicking only observes things).

Currently Freenetbootin is not in the repo's (dose anyone know how i could do this?) but the spinning wheel of death is most likely due to unetbootin is no longer in trisquels repo's due to offering to install non-free distros like ubuntu its free software though so if you want to download it you can from there website https://unetbootin.github.io/ also if you feel confident to do so (and i could help) you can compile Freenetbootin from source: https://notabug.org/tomlukeywood/FreeNetBootin

Re: [Trisquel-users] Always underline keyboard access keys
Holding alt does nothing when I try. But, as I'm trying things as I write, alt+the first letter of a menu item in Thunar opens the drop-down menu. That's cool. Is it a way to make The whole trisquel work like VimFX? If it is, I'm interested. In that and other ways to go mouseless. For now I use a keyboard-driven window manager, and VimFX for the browser. I can move around somehow in Thunar (plus I should be able to set keyboard shortcuts for that). Any other ways to go mouseless? I just learned about Zathura for example. I know it's also possible to apply a script that makes the mouse work from the keyboard. I suppose that learning the shortcuts specific to each program is something I've overlooked as well. Still can't figure out that alt thing though. Any help appreciated.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7 feedback (with hardware details)
Sure, but if old/ slow harware is a problem, surely that's what Trisquel Mini is for? My laptop is a least 5 years old "netbook", and runs Compiz in Trisquel 6 with no noticeable issues. I tried switching to Metacity. I didn't notice it make anything work faster, it just made it harder to use. For example in Compiz I can hold CTRL and ALT and tap the right arrow and the down arrow, to get directly from desktop 1 top desktop 4. To do the same in Metacity I have to tap the right arrow three times and wait for the window manager to draw and redraw the two desktops in between. First world problems I know :) But annoying all the same.

You can also try renaming the file at "/home/[username]/.Xauthority", to "/home/[username]/.Xauthority.1". If you are logged in with such user in one of Ctrl + Alt + F1 through Ctrl + Alt + F6 (these are the so called virtual terminals) you can also do: cd mv ".Xauthority" ".Xauthority.1" Sorry for not being able to elaborate on this answer any further. Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7 feedback (with hardware details)
Fair enough, but Toutatis included both, with Compiz as default. Why not do the same in Belenos, but with Metacity as default? Does even having it on the system as an opt-in disrupt accessibility too? If so, again fair enough. If not, I'm putting in a +1 for bundling both in future Trisquel releases. Speaking of accessibility, I understand and agree with the decision to have Orca turned on by default in the graphical installer. Would it be possible to have instructions for how to turn it off right at the start of the install? A button that toggles it off would be ideal, but a simple text instruction for the shortcut keys to turn it off would be enough. Again, first world problems, but...
Re: [Trisquel-users] UNetbootin won't install on Trisquel 7
Thanks for your suggestions. My laptop is a "netbook" (no optical drives), and the USB Creator on my Belenos instance couldn't create a GNewSense boot USB. I'll spare you the gory details (unless you're really interested) but I tried quite a few things, to no avail. In the end I booted back into my Toutatis instance, and used Unetbootin (which I'd installed from the PPA some time ago), and the same USB stick, which worked fine. I suspect the built-in USB Creator only works for Ubuntu-based distros, which excludes most of the FSF-endorsed distros. This is why I'm definitely putting in a +1 for Tom's 'freenetbootin' fork to be added to the repos for both Toutatis and Belenos.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Recommend me software for screen recording
Greetings a_slacker_here, I have also struggled with Pitivi. I recently installed Belenos with a 4GB swap partition, and the performance improved considerably. Keep in mind that video-editing is one of the most resource intensive jobs a desktop PC is called on to do, and every little thing that improves the stability of your system, or frees up resources (esp. RAM) will likely help.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7 feedback (with hardware details)
I do have some weird display issues from time to time, and I have wondered if there is a better libre driver for my screens (built-in screen on Acer Aspire One KAV60, and using the VGA port, an external Dell Flat Panel Monitor 1707FPt). How do I remove a driver module from the blacklist?
Re: [Trisquel-users] UNetbootin won't install on Trisquel 7
Well, if you're trying to create a live copy of an operating system: If you want to put it into a CD or a DVD, use an disc image recorder such as Brasero or K3B if you really want a graphical user interface. Or if you want to put it into an USB drive, you can use USB Creator (usb-creator-gtk in the default GNU+Linux-libre Trisquel installation). Respectfully, Adonay. You could try a newer kernel + x stack. Currently the newest I believe issudo apt-get install --install-recommends {linux-generic,xserver-xorg,libgl1-mesa-glx,libegl1-mesa-drivers}-lts-utopic To blacklist a module, one puts a file to /etc/modprobe.d/ that contains "blacklist module".
