Re: [Trisquel-users] beagleboardblack fully free software?
The problem is not that they have done it already, the problem is that they COULD do it if they wanted. I don't like sleeping with that uncertainty. If you know what I mean. As for the basis of why I think this way: http://hemingway.softwarelivre.org/fisl16/high/40t/sala_40t-high-201507111600.ogv (best reference I have seen in this matter, clearly illustrates the idea) Several talks by Jacob Appelbaum, he mentions the dangers of any piece of proprietary code running inside your machine. I think I saw a Replicant video some months ago that also mentioned the dangers of any firmware running inside your machine. Can't find it now though. Look, my laptop doesn't even support Coreboot, so I am not saying that I am in a better position. I am just saying that I would like to be in a better position! And I don't feel that the "RYF Award" actually puts me in that better position. Brings me close, but it is not enough.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why do some old kernels still stay?
I have a similar issue. I have linus 3.13 and 3.4 installed. Everytime there is an update on 3.13, it messes my grub confguration. Since I don't use it, I want to remove it all. Just keep the 3.4. I have tried following these instructions https://askubuntu.com/questions/2793/how-do-i-remove-or-hide-old-kernel-versions-to-clean-up-the-boot-menu But I noticed that I have no "linux-headers" for 3.4. I am afraid that removing the 3.13 headers will make it impossible to boot the 3.13. can anyone confirm this? I am using synaptic.

As a side note (and maybe even off-topic), last time I checked, GNU+Linux-libre GuixSD had ARMHF builds for some packages, except for GNU Linux-libre[1]. REFERENCES [1] https://www.gnu.org/software/guix/package-list.html
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why do some old kernels still stay?
To make my point clearer: I understand it's good to keep an older kernel, and it's ok to delete the even older ones by command line, if there's one single command that really does all the work. But why has dist-upgrade deleted kernel 66 (and probably others), but not 65 and 63 as well?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Not enough space in /boot to update Trisquel
Lucky you! I just found some free software for your work: # QGIS * https://directory.fsf.org/wiki/QGIS * "qgis" package. * See "PySHP" or ""Gpsmanshp"" if you want support for ESRI's Shapefiles (SHP file format). # GRASS (Geographic Resources Analysis Support System) * https://directory.fsf.org/wiki/GRASS * "grass" package. * See "PySHP" or ""Gpsmanshp"" if you want support for ESRI's Shapefiles (SHP file format). # Thuban * https://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Thuban * "thuban" package. * See "PySHP" or ""Gpsmanshp"" if you want support for ESRI's Shapefiles (SHP file format). # PySHP * Is perhaps useless without one of the first three packages. * I recommend you to use this as an one-way support only (that is, only for importing/opening SHP files), not for saving using SHP files, because it just passes society's dependency on non-free software formats forward for your mates. * https://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Pyshp * "python-pyshp" package. # Gpsmanshp * Is perhaps useless without one of the first three packages. * I recommend you to use this as an one-way support only (that is, only for importing/opening SHP files), not for saving using SHP files, because it just passes society's dependency on non-free software formats forward for your mates. * "gpsmanshp" package.
Re: [Trisquel-users] beagleboardblack fully free software?
I am not the one who downvote your post (who has been messing with the votes in this thread anyway??), but I don't think your reply was fair to me. Did I suggest that they should treat everything as equal? Not really. That is not to say that caution should be taken. I think (and you can read it above in another comment of mine) that they can and should make suggestions, but the "RYF Award" is not necessary here, nor is it being well applied. On another hand, if a suggestion is possibly misleading, I would rather not have it, though I believe they are totally well intentioned in their suggestions :) btw, I will upvote your post and put it back to 0 because like SuperTramp said, we should use words and not "votes" to discuss these things. Whoever downvoted your post shouldn't have.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Recovering icedove emails
I was able to get it to work!! basically I had to add a new account (a fake one, so it wouldn't interfere with the other ones of same name) and point the local folder to the place where I had my older inbox copy. Thanks!
Re: [Trisquel-users] beagleboardblack fully free software?
Lol, didn't even think of that but... yeah, damn right you are!

It's like saying we have something that respects your freedom, but it's not perfect, until something better comes along we will say it does then we discard it. I know they are not being "rude" to these projects, but it's kinda the message I see in there. It is not. The message is "do the best you can". Companies like MiniFree and ThinkPenguin love the RYF label. It is great advertisement. Today the best we can in terms of laptop is not perfect. Whenever a new piece o firmware can be freed (including by people selling RYF hardware and who want to supersede their competitors), every vendor will have to follow this freedom path to not lose the certification. In the end, the RYF program is a great incentive for increasingly freedom-respecting hardware.
Re: [Trisquel-users] beagleboardblack fully free software?
>it is better to show the world a computer that is at least going in the direction we want to go in -- and encourage future work and development in that direction -- rather than show nothing at all and wait and hope for the perfect computer to somehow (maybe, possibly) arrive on its own. Indeed I think that is a good way and those laptops deserve the RYF approval.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Antwort: beagleboardblack fully free software?
Indeed, you're right to consider it to be paradoxical, and this is one of the reasons that this justification is not really an end goal, that is: This is why the Respects Your Freedom certification will probably change when the time comes where there's a possibility to run free, and writable, software on similar hardware. Besides, I would actually edit my previous publication as to replace "acceptable" with "passable for the time being (must check later on)", since this situation doesn't qualify as a good use of non-free software for free software advancement[1]. Re: [Trisquel-users] Recovering icedove emails
This is why I hate things that try to keep my personal data inside databases. Although if they're really needed, I don't evade them, but just try to adapt my workflow so as to keep plain text backups of it. As for the case of your e-mails, I have noticed such possible problem when I happened to open the inbox file using a plain text editor and noticed that the content wasn't written in a legitimate mail syntax, and that they were assigned to an unique account identity for Icedove (more generally, Thunderbird too). So I thought: "Oh-ow... If don't keep frequent plain text copies of my emails, I'll probably lose them". Luckily for the users, you can just open Icedove, open the folder where the messages are (I'm talking about folders in Icedove), and then select all the messages you want to save to the disk drive, right-click on them and click on "Save as", which will enable you to save your messages in EML file format (standardized by RFC822). But Icedove can import and open the MBOX file format. The same thing seems to apply to contacts and address books, although Icedove saves them using the LDIF file format (LDAP Data Interchange Format), but can import data in the VCF file format (vCard file).
[Trisquel-users] Antwort: beagleboardblack fully free software?
"It is not. The message is "do the best you can". " No, it's not. The message is: "This product respects your freedom". And I think GNUser is rightfully criticizing it. If there is such a need for an award (for advertisement etc.) why not call it the "FSF Best choice" award or something like that. A product that "respects your freedom" now can't suddenly stop doing so without changing at all; just because a new "more free" product is available. The RYF award is misleading and should be changed into something more honest.
Re: [Trisquel-users] turis omnia open source router
I think the only free routers must be FPGA router. Two FPGA chips one for main OS some RTOS and second fpga for custom encryption accelerator that user can use different encryption ! PHY chips must be implemented in main FPGA. If anyone know some project like this let me know.
Re: [Trisquel-users] beagleboardblack fully free software?
Well, I don't see that as acceptable. Or to rephrase that: I don't think it's acceptable enough. I don't fully understand the need to award a "RYF", is it such a priority, to stamp a logo "RYF" in a product? On the other hand I consider unfair to remove it afterwards. The X200 is now a good product that has the RYF. If a 100% Libre computer came along (with no blobs at all) the X200 would still be a good product. Should it be "removed" when it never changed (had no proprietary bits added to it), just got "second place" because some other did better? I don't think that is the best way to deal with things. Please note "The X200 is a good product". I am not against the work done by Libreboot. Actually I think it's one of the best projects we have right now in terms of freedom! What I consider misleading is the whole "RYF" thing. I think the FSF could totally recommend those computers while mentioning that they are not 100% libre but are the best choice for now, and still not need an "award". I think that is in some ways... smoke and mirrors if you will. It's like saying we have something that respects your freedom, but it's not perfect, until something better comes along we will say it does then we discard it. I know they are not being "rude" to these projects, but it's kinda the message I see in there. What should be the difference between X200, Chromebook C201, Macbook 2,1? I know they have some technical differences (I for instance would hardly trust any hardware coming from Apple) but they all have LibreBoot support. And none of them come from a "nice to freedom" maker. Again, I think the FSF is right in recommending some machines, but I don't think the "RYF" will do any good in the long run.
[Trisquel-users] Antwort: beagleboardblack fully free software?
So basically if a manufacturer locks down the bios (make it 'read only'), the freedom issue would be solved? Quite paradoxical.
Re: [Trisquel-users] beagleboardblack fully free software?
Oh, I see. You installed it yourself. I thought you were using a pre-built image. There are so many available I wish I could get one to work in freedom. Actually, bananian (www.bananian.org) is the closest thing, Nico actually was kind enough to let me know which non-free packages need to be removed and other than that, he said one can use it with the main repo only and it all works well. I might give that one a shot. I have tried making an image of mine, some time ago, but it didn't go all that well. Might try again at another time though :)

So sales will never force anyone to do that. Apple is known (and has been, for years now) for a lot of issues (making their boards on sweat-shops at china, insecure services that get hacked all the time, too hard to install any software in a non-jb iphone) and yet they sell like hell. Things are never gonna be like that. But maybe I am wrong, who knows :) Would be nice if I was wrong.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Recovering icedove emails
I think I am missing a step somewhere. I have several folders named "pop.openmailbox.org" "pop.openmailbox-1.org" etc. Inside there are files called "inbox" and "inbox.msf" I tried creating a new folder in the .icedove/profile/Mail/ folder and putting those there but it doesn't work. Do I need to do something more with icedove for it to read the emails?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Why do some old kernels still stay?
Linus is Linus Torvalds. I am not sure, but headers are optional I think. If something goes wrong, and you can not to boot, you can install/reinstall any synaptic's package from booted LiveUSB/CD mounting temporary folder.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why do some old kernels still stay?
You can delete everything of kernels that you don't using. You can keep the previous version if you feel more security. Sometimes when upgrading, autoremove command removes old/useless packages, but somethimes it doesn't autoremove previos kernel version. I must to remove the previous one manually. Can be some fail-proof system.

[Trisquel-users] There is a bunch of ways to install Ruby, what is the proper way for Tisquel?
For whatever reasons the version of Ruby that one can get in the Trisquel repos is old. Too old to be useful. I try to install Jekyll and get this - grey@x60:~$ sudo gem install jekyll ERROR: Error installing jekyll: jekyll requires Ruby version >= 2.0.0. There are a few different way to go about installing Ruby, like RVM. But with RVM I can basically only use the Ruby that RVM provides, from the terminal. Other programs don't 'see' that it's there. I've found a few other answers as well. So what should I use? I thought the link at the bottom MAY work but it's pretty old. You thoughts, please? Thanks. https://stackoverflow.com/questions/16222738/how-do-i-install-ruby-2-0-0-correctly-on-ubuntu-12-04
Re: [Trisquel-users] Untransparent Bloatware
Such a nice community out there ^ _^ Maybe I was not so specific at all but this specific thing about establishment of internet connection is true: " "First thing that makes me tremble is the wait-up at boot-up for internet connection." - I don't experience that at all. Are you sure it's Trisquel-related? If so, maybe try to install again. But that's last resort option [..]" Try to boot with no internet access - system will wait for connection to appear for 1 minute and what it wants is only to connect, it is not any configuration. I've already found solution for this but can't understand why it's even here. With 'useless' soft I don't worry about disk space it takes but about loading of it at boot - observe this with booting in text-mode and You'll see which services are loaded while booting, in real time. "On the free stuff. Trisquel free is FLOSS as FSF claims it is." But what do I do when I'm required to use non-free? In Trisquel it is hard to install anything non-free. Which seems to me like Trisquel decides for me. Debian (etc.) can also be free but allows to install non-free and that is unacceptable by FSF but they ignore that (or can do nothing about it while beeing free) in some govn'ts and under certain conditions one has to use non-free (or have consequences). I would not use it but I have to sometimes. I agree those problems are trivial. So what? Ain't free software trivial to most people?
Re: [Trisquel-users] There is a bunch of ways to install Ruby, what is the proper way for Tisquel?
Wow, great typo.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Untransparent Bloatware
> in some govn'ts and under certain conditions one has to use non-free (or have consequences) I'm really curious as to what you mean here. I'm not aware of any cases where governments force people to use computers at all, much less force them to run particular proprietary programs on their computers.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Untransparent Bloatware
> But what do I do when I'm required to use non-free? In Trisquel it is hard to install anything non-free. I guess, but in the same way, it's "hard" to install anything on Windows. Somehow, despite this, Windows users install a lot of software on their computers.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Mounting HDD or DVD in both Thunar and PCmanFM: "Not authorized to perform operation"
Thanks for checking out. I'll gather as much data as I can about these. I quickly did earlier about mountall, and this one seems off the hook. On a side note my first try with fstab was strange : before startx, during the boot, a message indicated that it tried to mount my USB drive, like it expected to be plugged in before startup. It might be standard behaviour though. I thought it was recongnized when plugged in. Either way, I have barely scratched the surface on fstab, I might be able to solve this by myself. Worst case, I still can mount manually, which is the safest solution. I just wish I could be able to configure automount from a minimal system. I'll try what you suggested, thanks again :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Untransparent Bloatware
1. In Trisquel it is hard to install anything non-free. 2. Debian (etc.) can also be free but allows to install non-free 3. and that is unacceptable by FSF I think you're conflating different issues here. I shall try to explain. The word "allows" is probably the wrong word to use. Any free system will "allow" someone to install whatever they want. There is no way to stop it. Think on that for a minute and I hope you will understand: By virtue of being free, it means that that the person has the source code for everything and can modify it. And so: If a free system include some "feature" that would block the installation of non-free stuff, any person using that system could modify it to undo that and then proceed to install their non-free stuff. So, a free system, by definition, allows people to install whatever they want. So the issue shouldn't be framed in terms of what a system "allows" or not because any free system will "allow" anything okay? Trisquel, as you know, has no non-free repos for anything. Things are out there, but you're on your own to find them and set them up. Debian makes it easy, but Trisquel doesn't work to make it "hard" as you say. What you're actually experiencing is the normal difficulty level. Just because Debian has worked to make it "easy" doesn't mean other distros are working to make it "hard." For your final point, the FSF's issue isn't what a system "allows." As I've explained, a free system "allows" anything by it's own nature of being free: No matter what anti-feature someone puts in a free program to stop something, the users of that program can always rip it out and then proceed to do what they want. So, rather the FSF's issue isn't what Debian "allowing" but with "recommending" non-free stuff to people. I think this section from Avoiding Ruinous Compromises describes their concerns pretty well: "The issue here is not whether people should be 'able' or 'allowed' to install nonfree software; a general-purpose system 'enables' and 'allows' users to do whatever they wish. The issue is whether we guide users towards nonfree software. What they do on their own is their responsibility; what we do for them, and what we direct them towards, is ours. We must not direct the users towards proprietary software as if it were a solution, because proprietary software is the problem." [0] http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/compromise.en.html
Re: [Trisquel-users] Does replicant support 3G/4G on any devices?
The software is different, but it is still proprietary. So the answer to your question, sadly, is yes. Everything that runs on the phone's radio (the part that interacts with the cellular network and provides your 3G/4G connectivity and is essentially an entire second computer in your phone with its own operating system that you never see on the screen) is proprietary. Some of the u are even mandatory. I'm not sure what would happen if people refused. But it's worse than that: A common design shares the phone's main memory with the operating system you see on the screen and the one you don't. This design also gives it access to the microphone and GPS as well. And, cell phone carriers have the ability to remotely update this firmware. Read the contract with your carrier, buried in the fine print is probably something along the lines of: "Please be aware that we may change your wireless device's software, applications or programming remotely, without notice." What control does this give carriers? The power to push updated versions to your phone's radio - without your knowledge - that contain surveillance features to activate the microphone and report your location and to access main system memory and everything in it. You take this with you everywhere you go. Your carrier may say they'd never do this but policies can be easily changed, while the infrastructure for doing such stuff will persist for many years.
Re: [Trisquel-users] "Johnny Carson flashes" are frustrating problem analyses
Following the suggestion to video the action, I managed to capture several different sets of shutdown blinkies, to wit: 1. Press to continue K98mdadm/etc/rc0.d/K98mdadm-waitidle.bak: 16 : read: arg count Could not acquire the 'org.freedesktop.ModemManager1" service name 2. nm-dispatcher.action: could not acquire the org.freedsktop.nm-dispatcher service. 3. [partial - too fuzzy to read the rest] ... could not get the system bus ... make sure the message bus daemon is running ... While not exactly back-to-back shutdowns, these are not just normal shutdown boilerplate legalese. In every case, swap deactivation, unmounting and halting or rebooting take place subsequent to these messages. Google reveals only that others find messages like these when their systems freeze during shutdown and the above messages are on the black screen until the plug is pulled. I do not see these unless I press when the last Plymouth screen appears. Nothing about ClamAV or FreeClam, either, so this technique may just be telling me what XDiagnose would say if that were running. I'll try that next.

[Trisquel-users] Does replicant support 3G/4G on any devices?
I have heard that the wifi requires proprietary firmware, however, I'm not aware if this same firmware is required for the 3G or 4G, or if support for that is different from support for wifi. Sorry for the dumb question. (Also, I tried posting this on the replicant forum like a week ago, hoping I'll have more luck here.)
Re: [Trisquel-users] "Johnny Carson flashes" are frustrating problem analyses
"So the shutdown blinkies remain as elusive as ever." I don't know why you say that: From what you've describe this all seems very standard to me. If you recall one of the things that happens during shutdown is all running processes are sent SIGTERM (To quote from the GNU C Library manual: "The SIGTERM signal is a generic signal used to cause program termination. Unlike SIGKILL, this signal can be blocked, handled, and ignored. It is the normal way to politely ask a program to terminate.") Programs will then begin to clean up after themselves and quit. Different programs will take different amounts of time to handle this. While programs are in the process of quitting, some program that's used by another program might quit before all of the other programs that use it have. And so, you'll get complaints from those still-surviving programs. Examples include your "could not acquire the 'org.freedesktop.ModemManager" and "could not get the system bus ... make sure the message bus daemon is running" stuff. This message bus stuff is probably from some program that uses dbus. These still-running programs will soon be quitting themselves, but if not that other part of the shutdown process happens: They'll get SIGKILL. (To quote from the GNU C Library manual: "The SIGKILL signal is used to cause immediate program termination. It cannot be handled or ignored, and is therefore always fatal.") So these programs are GOING to stop one way or the other. :) After these complaining programs you say you see stuff about swap deactivation, unmounting file systems and whatnot. That's a normal process once the last programs stopped running. So all of this stuff seems quite normal and nothing out of the ordinary.
Re: [Trisquel-users] "Johnny Carson flashes" are frustrating problem analyses
"my video camera won't stay focused on the screen." Try turning off automatic focus. Focus it manually first, and then do a shut down once the focus is perfect.

Replicant suppports phones that are "not proven to have bad modem isolation". I don't know if that is enough to prevent some of the surveillance features jxself mentioned. BUt yes, we are always at risk when using a portable phone (for more reasons than one).

You can confirm the details with the company name, kind of drug, price, expiry date along with the dosages. Even cross medication interference and allergy checking services are thought a courtesy with the medical industry as no pharmacy says he will be a complete expert in your medical conditions. The last two years usually need a lot of clinical work. Another strategy for locating a trustworthy drug store is reading reviews on online medical shops. Certain drugs like Coumadin have multiple drug interactions. You will either get a call or free will happen. Many require math and science coursework, and prospective students should know what those prerequisites are and whether or not they meet them. It is actually difficult to acquire pharmacy merchant account from a normal credit card processor. This online pharmacy is really very great for old ailing patients and physically disabled persons. Screaming, yelling, demanding things, or becoming rude will not help the situation. After you filled out the account, you will now pick a payment scheme. I have an even deeper response to this newest pharmacy tragedy. This
[Trisquel-users] How to get back "regular" Unity?
Hello folks, Several months ago I activated Unity 2d in my Trisquel 6 system. I followed the instructions given here https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/how-install-unity-desktop-environment-and-create-session-entry-trisquel-70 Now I want to go back to "regular" Unity with all the 3d stuff. But I don't see this option in my log-in screen. The only Unity-related entry I have is "Ubuntu2d". How do you reactivate Unity?
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to get back "regular" Unity?
Ooops I'm sorry, I pasted the wrong link there! To activate Unity 2d, I followed instructions given here https://trisquel.info/en/forum/how-can-i-install-unity And now I am looking at this page https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/how-install-unity-desktop-environment-and-create-session-entry-trisquel-70 Even though I follow the instructions, I cannot get it activated.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Does replicant support 3G/4G on any devices?
This feels like an area of hardware where the input/out of the networking chips should be sand boxed with only very limited functionality. Essentially, while it could ask for microphone/GPS information it should be up to the OS to determine what it does and does not send/receive. If there are some funny packets coming in the audio stream, it should at least flag as an issue to the OS. At least then if you run a fully free phone OS it can be stopped at the source. Essentially how the finger print reader supposedly works on iPhones. Just an idea but one that requires the hardware manufacturers to enable as it can't be solved with hardware alone.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Untransparent Bloatware
Thank you for this! I am a little tired of it constantly reading when I log in. Trying to logic with *asterisk* *asterisk* *asterisk* *asterisk* *asterisk* coming out of the speaker isn't always welcome. :P
Re: [Trisquel-users] So, where do you guys get Content that's Non-free yet DRM-free? (not talking about Games unless there's a free engine)
" GOG," Scummvm works with a ton of adventures. Just get the deb files from www.scummvm.org . Even better, try the nighly, it supports even more games. They have propietary data, but the engine is 100% free.
Re: [Trisquel-users] beagleboardblack fully free software?
I don't care if you down vote me! But rest assure I'm still your sissy and dissident guy.. Debian rocks! Debian rocks! and it will always rock you! For those about to Rock with Debian! We salute you!!
Re: [Trisquel-users] beagleboardblack fully free software?
As an addendum: Software that runs on read-only memory is ACCEPTABLE, but not free software. It's acceptable because there's no way to exercise the results of freedom 1 (to study and to adapt the software as you wish) when using freedom 0 (to run the software and the adaptations). In other words, what is freedom 1 good for in this case if the memory in which the software is on is read-only? "Ah! But I can study and adapt it! I can redistribute it and my adaptations! So it's free software!". But can you use YOUR ADAPTATIONS on the very same computer (freedom 0)?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Untransparent Bloatware
The whole point of Trisquel is to make it trivially easy for everybody to use their computer in complete freedom. If you need non-free software for whatever reason you should choose one of the 1000 distros of GNU that ship non-free software in their repositories. Trisquel does not "decide for you". Trisquel is just following the libre philosophy, that is to give users a 100% libre distro. If you are not into that, you should use some other distro.
