of equipment controls running commercials last night when Game 5 went into

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: Yesterday's Great Moment In Local Broadcasting

2013-06-20 Thread David Lynch
I know a couple people who work/have worked at KXAN and one of them says
that their theory is that the person responsible for turning off the master
control automation in the event that the game ran long was probably more
focused on getting the other control room for the local news immediately
following the game ready to go, since the combination of sudden-death OT
and the game running long meant that it would start with a moment's notice.

That said, pre-scheduled commercials interrupting live broadcasts
(particularly newscasts that run long due to severe weather or breaking
news) seems to happen with some regularity on KXAN, so I wasn't terribly
surprised when I saw the Facebook outrage start to pop up last night.

[TV orNotTV] Cable Customers Who Don’t Like Sports File Class Action Lawsuit

2013-06-20 Thread Tom Wolper
The lawsuit was filed in southern California and it relates to TWC paying
$8 billion for Dodgers' games and $3 billion for Lakers' games. The thing
is, it's not only TWC customers suing. TWC plans to sell their new sports
channels to other providers so there are plaintiffs from Charter, DirecTV,
and Verizon as well as their cable rates will go up.

As the Consumerist notes, this lawsuit isn’t just second-guessing Time
Warner’s decision to acquire the rights: it questions the entire cable
television business model.

I did not know he worked at Rolling Stone (when was that?). I do know that
he is married to Sheri Annis, who is associated with a particularly nasty
brand of stealth conservative Republican politics in California. She worked
on controversial (and successful propositions to eliminate or greatly
curtail bilingual education and affirmative action in the state. She
worked on Arnold's campaign, but that really makes her a Pete Wilson
Republican (Pete Wilson is the former two-term Republican Governor here
that is basically responsible for the near extinction of the Republican
Party in this state).

Of course a man's politics do not have to be the same as his wife's (my
wife is pretty much a-political, which is the opposite of my political
orientation), and it is not true that strong political convictions makes
someone biased or unreliable as a journalist. But I don't see anything in
Kurtz' background that would make him distasteful to Fox News (despite the
potshots that folks like O'Reilly have taken at him over the years).

Krutz's contract with CNN apparently expires at the end of June, which I
guess explains why CNN, unlike the Daily Beast, decided to give Howie a
more graceful exit after his series of mistakes capped by the Jason Collins
incident. They could have fired his ass, but instead let him ride out the
last few months of his contract, but I suspect, despite
the disingenuous tone of Kurtz' statement confirming the change, that there
has never been a snowballs's chance in hell of Howie continuing at CNN.

FWIW, CBS still does the same thing with Letterman timings; a
similar-looking graphic with break times pops up on the network feed at
about 11:01 and typically stays up for 15 or 20 minutes. They still send
the timings over their BAS system so it prints out a hard copy in
affiliates' master control rooms, but if the printer dies, this makes for a
good backup.

The fact that the first post among my friends was 10:31 PM Central Time and
that KXAN doesn't have a break between the end of the news and the start of
Leno would seem to disprove the theory that it was something that would
have correctly aired if not for the game throwing the schedule off.
However, what I kind of wonder is if what aired was supposed to be either
the last break in the local news or an additional local break if the game
ran past 10:30 CT, and it went in to the system as airing at precisely
10:30:00 rather than the first cue after 10:30:00.

It's time for Joe Hass's Rhetorical Question Theater.

Then their process flow is just cocked up. Why not wait until you have to
program these breaks into the computer to program the last one? In fact,
why program that at all and just cue it from the control room?

This has been another episode of Joe Hass's Rhetorical Question Theater.
Stay tuned for Secret Storm next over most of these CBS stations.

[TV orNotTV] Oliver Takes Over The Daily Show

2013-06-20 Thread PGage
I know, he took over summer hosting duties last week. But the very positive
reviews he got often noted that he was mostly competently delivering great
material that could easily have been read by Stewart. I read one review
that the main takeaway was that it is the writing staff at TDS that is
extraordinary, while any monkey can read the scripts.

I did not think that was quite fair, but there was something to it. But
last night's show, the first segment of which featured Oliver's patented
takes on the beauty of the german language, and riffs on one of his
favorite targets, Vlad Putin. I assume tonight we will have a segment
on Silvio Berlusconi...

It was profoundly moving and set up his tag at the end of the episode
(a dramatic stage faint) as the perfect farewell.

[TV orNotTV] 'AMC,' OLTL' Producer Settles With Stagehands Union

2013-06-20 Thread Mark Jeffries
Prospect Park, the production company behind the online revivals of the
former ABC soaps. carved out a deal with the International Alliance of
Theatrical Stage Employees and the shows will resume production in August:

http://www.thewrap.com/tv/article/prospect-parks-settles-dispute-iatse-over-all-my-children-and-one-life-live-98796

Online viewers shouldn't notice an extended hiatus, since it was decided
last month to cut back the addition of new episodes from four a week to
twice a week.

I fondly recall SCTV's Evita parody Indira, starring Andrea Martin as

Re: [TV orNotTV] Remember Dan Abrams? Well, He's Back...

2013-06-20 Thread Kevin M.
Back in the days of the OJ trial, Dan Abrams provided some of the most
dispassionate and fact-filled recaps for CourtTV. If you wanted to
know what was happening in the courtroom with a minimum of the sidebar
gossip, he was good for that. I honestly don't think I've watched a
single minute of his work post-verdict.
