Re: [TV orNotTV] Study: 61% say streamers overpriced

2022-04-20 Thread Ben Combee
That analysis has the wrong pricing for Netflix, in my opinion. The
$9.99 price is for the basic plan which isn't HD and only allows one
screen. I'd expect lots of subs are for the standard ($15.49) or
premium ($19.99) plans that allow higher resolutions and more streams
at one time. It also misses that many streamers have ad-supported
plans for lower cost, including Hulu, Peacock, and Paramount+. When I
last heard numbers from Hulu, about 70% of their subs were
ad-supported
(https://variety.com/2019/digital/news/hulu-ad-supported-subscribers-70-percent-1203227954/).
I bet a lot of users now are on the D+/Hulu/ESPN+ bundle too which has
the ad-supported Hulu as default.

I have mentioned before in this forum about how for a person who doesn't

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: Quick review: The Break with Michelle Wolf

2018-08-29 Thread Ben Combee
I found the writing on McHale's show to be pretty cheap but sometimes
satisfyingly out there. It was basically The Soup 1.5 I liked it,
but it took me a while to find time to watch the second half. In a
way, it reminded me of "With Bob and David" which also tried to bring
back an old show by doing more of the same, but ended up not being
very memorable. It certainly didn't look like it cost much to make.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Joel McHale gets Netflix talker

2018-02-27 Thread Ben Combee
The quality is fairly consistent with The Soup, although episode 2
didn't have me laughing as much as episode 1. In some ways, I think
the lack of commercial breaks hurts the flow of the show. They can
use pre-taped bits for that, but episode 2 only had one pre-taped bit.
They also seemed willing to do cuts to side views of Joel in front of
the green-screen liberally in this one, something I don't think I saw
in the first.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Non-surprise of the day: Andy Dick fired for sexual harassment

2017-11-02 Thread Ben Combee
I was in the audience at SXSW for the screening of his film "Danny
Roane: First Time Director" back in 2006. It was one of the weirdest
Q that I'd ever seen, with Dick on his worst behavior with the
audience.

To quote the Houston Chronicle story about it:

The film festival, in its 13th year, devolved into a comedy show
Saturday night when comedian Andy Dick turned a question-and-answer
session into a raucous, profane stand-up act.

Stand up? No, it was more like "run around." Or maybe "thrown down."

It was all in keeping with the tone and comedy level of the movie he'd
come to promote, his directorial debut: Danny Roane: First-Time
Director. Andy Dick also wrote the story, in which he portrays an
alcoholic ex-sitcom star who tries to make a comeback with a harrowing
autobiographical drama that somehow morphs into a musical.

At one point in the Q, announcing that he was going to have sex with
his Danny Roane co-star, Mo Collins, she simulated a sex act with him.
Later, they got into a wrestling match that ended with them on the
floor simulating nonconsensual sex. The impromptu performance included
comments from Andy Dick about bodily secretions, sex organs and
audience members in wheelchairs.

The huge cast of Danny Roane includes Ben Stiller, Jack Black, James
Van Der Beek, Anthony Rapp, Bob Odenkirk and Maura Tierney.

The questions after most screenings have to do with the intricacies of
filmmaking or behind-the-scenes aspects. After Danny Roane, typical
questions included "Andy, will you make out with me?"

Re: [TV orNotTV] Esquire Network transitioning to digital-only

2017-01-18 Thread Ben Combee
Yes -- there are a growing number of "linear" streaming services, like
Pluto TV, which show everyone the same content as a pushed stream,
instead of having viewers pull specific programs. It looks like NBCU
is continuing some of that channel's content but isn't not going to
dedicate staff to have to sell the fixed amount of advertising needed
to program a live stream of it's programs.

Re: [TV orNotTV] HBO changes mind, scraps 'Vinyl'

2016-06-23 Thread Ben Combee
I think HBO is starting to get a lot more churn, now that so many
subscribers just watch for one series, "Game of Thrones", and it's
easier to just add the service for a few months using HBO Now. That
means they need to keep really popular fare spaced out over the year
to keep people from dropping, and if they didn't think "Vinyl" would
be a potential seasonal tentpole, it's outta there to make room for
trying something else.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Sesame Street cut in half

2015-08-13 Thread Ben Combee
As someone consuming a lot of PBS Kids programming right now (mostly
by DVR with the little one), I will note that while most of the
programming is animated, they're doing a fair amount of live-action
interstitial, and they do have some newer series like Odd Squad that
are mostly live-action with (bad) special effects added.

There's some TERRIBLE computer animation (I'm looking at you, Sid the
Science Kid), but a lot of it is passible. Curious George has been
high quality, and Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood has great content
combined with creative (but stuff) CG.

I wonder what the cost difference is? Set construction? Group
performance time instead of flexibly scheduled voice recording?
Union-set rates and residuals?

Several tweets mention the irony of the fact that a series that was created
to teach the poor basic letters and numbers skills is now only available to
the rich (which is not necessarily true, but hey).

The comment in the top post from the PBS station manager in Seattle makes a
more important point--that the bulk of PBS Kids programming over the last
decade has become animated instead of live-action, which is a big change
from the PBS lineup many of us knew and loved. I realize that at least most
big city PBS stations are now wall-to-wall kids from early morning to
BBC/NBR/NewsHour time and that animated programming is cheaper than live
action, but the PBS difference outside of the emphasis on education WAS
Mister Rogers, The Sesame Street humans, The Electric Company cast and
the ZOOM kids. That's gone now (not to mention the fact that credits are
now squeezed back for promos--and I realize that the target audience can't
 read 'em anyway).

I'm the father of a soon-to-be pre-kindergartner, and she lost interest
in Sesame Street over the course of the last year. But when she did
watch, I noticed she did not have any interest in watching the full hour.
Her preference was watching segments that interested her -- she was more
enthralled in watching, say, a two-minute lesson on letters and numbers than
a 20-minute Elmo fest. When Elmo or another character/segment she didn't
care for popped up, we'd leave the room to color, read, or some other
 activity.

Re: [TV orNotTV] NBC mulling LIVE sitcom

2014-09-07 Thread Ben Combee
E!'s The Soup has done a live format all summer, and I say it's been
pretty mixed. I like some of the weird energy, but many of their bits
have gone south and not recovered. I assume they've been doing it
because it's cheaper, since they don't have to pay editors, just a
director.

But this is the way TV used to be done on a regular basis - at least in

had to learn their lines and rehearse properly.

It's technically restricting though - using commercial breaks to get actors
from set to set. On the other hand teleprompters and hidden earpieces can
help overcome any blanking that actors suffer.

I still think like any project the idea should come first and the technical
means of making it should follow.

FWIW, Fox tried it in 1992-93; after a sweeps gimmick live episode was

Re: [TV orNotTV] TiVo to be available to antenna viewers

2014-08-25 Thread Ben Combee
The 4-tuner Tivo Roamio already supported OTA, it's just the 6-tuner
Tivo Roamio Pro that dropped OTA. The hard drive size for the Romio
OTA seems to be the same as the Roamio at 500GB. Going OTA only means
they don't have to populate a CableCard slot or include QAM support in
the tuners. If lifetime service is priced the same as other Tivo
devices, then the full cost with no ongoing subscription would be $548
($49 + $499 lifetime).

is NBC's Saturday Night Live, although I believe officially the network
name was taken out of the title years ago.

 2. Every promo ends with Watch it live tonight... (or whatever). And
of course, none of these shows are actually live shows (The Voice is a
few weeks away from the live telecasts). On the other hand, Fox's promos
for The Following actually include in their voice-overs set your DVRs.
  Interesting.

Doesn't seem insane. He's had three successful series developed (Spin

all had rough spots, but getting past pilot to full seasons is an
accomplishment out there.

Re: [TV orNotTV] RIP Whitney Houston

2012-02-13 Thread Ben Combee
I saw the news about this while watching SNL on a short TiVo delay. I
was very glad that this didn't happen the next week when Maya Rudolph
is hosting, since it's very likely that she would do her impression of
Whitney during Weekend Update or some other time in the show. That
doesn't seem to likely now.

Youtube has video of Whitney singing that song in rehearsal, but it is not
very good. Hulu does not seem to have it, and Netflix of course does not

As far as I can tell, if it's not included in the Netflix version of the
episode, it won't be on Hulu, either (whether as a clip or as part of the
 Hulu Plus full episode).

Yeah, I think SNL either doesn't have the rights to repeat a lot of
those musical segments or it costs them extra due to music clearance
issues.

No... SXSW is many things... the film festival tends to have a few
major premieres, often with a genre twist, but they still do lots of
small indie films and documentaries that would be lost at ComicCon.
Then, there's Interactive which is best described as spring break for

Music festival which has about 2000 bands playing official showcases,
and even more at unofficial day parties all around the city.

[TV orNotTV] Re: Fwd: Semi-NotTV: Rockefeller Centre Tour

Curious -- has anyone been on the tour lately? Is it worth it?  I assume
that instead of the Conan set they're now adding the Fallon set to the mix,
but any recommendations on best time to go and/or what you get to see?

My sister and I went on the tour back in January. We went on the
studio tour and got to see the sets of the Nightly News, SNL, and
Conan. We went in the morning to stand outside for the 8AM hour of
the Today show where we were on air briefly during a bumper going into
the break. We then caught the 10AM tour. The morning is nice because
they're not taping so you get to see more of the sets; we even got to
stand where Brian Williams stands.

[TV orNotTV] Re: SNL news I don't care about

2008-12-14 Thread Ben Combee

Also, while I have never seen House or the British television shows he
is so famous for, people keep telling me that Laurie is really funny.
I can't wait to see it, and wonder why they choose not to display this
on SNL when he hosts the show.

I was very disappointed with Laurie's material -- the show really
failed to play on his talents. He's been on their twice, and they
still haven't done a good House MD parody. While I love the show,
it's rife for being taken down a few notches; perhaps they could do a
sketch where House is put into another profession, like plumber, where
they could solve a toilet mystery in seven minutes, with the requisite
misdiagnosis that makes things worse and the sudden insight at the
end.

On amazon Sopranos is $257.99, West Wing is $209.99. I don't think I

Right now, DeepDiscount.com has their 25% off sale going with code
SUPERSALE or DVDTALK (or about ten others). That makes the Sopranos
$193 and the West Wing $157. A little more tempting?
