hi, Is it possible to include gnome-orca related packages in future Ubuntu MID releases. Hmm so seems to me like we have a few people interested in this. Karmic is set to release on 29/10/2009 (next thursday) What should be on the menu? (If we are just meeting to to celebrate, then we can agree on a hotel/pub but if we should plan a install fest/a few talks then we will have to look for a more formal gathering place.) Since yesterday's Jaunty update Firefox appears to have lost its history, refresh etc. buttons and only has the original domain in the address bar (ie. if I go to http://sitea.com and click on links within the address bar does not change, even if I go to other sites - rather like framed content). Firefox seems horribly slow and clunky and unstable compared to the google-chrome-unstable build. Is Flash and Java supported by Chrome? I'm interested in giving it a try (I must admit I have found Firefox to be a little slow sometimes) but I can't live without my fix of Flash and Java (okay well I probably could, but it's nice to have for now until everything goes over to HTML5). You could try this command: mv .mozilla/firefox .mozilla/firefox-old This will move your profile so firefox will create a new one. I have installed Chrome, but streaming video using flash is about the same as Firefox ( a little jittery ) I get the best results for flash streaming video when I use Seamonkey 1.17 for sites such as BBC Iplayer Tvcatchup.com I am a victim of having to use an Intel GM915 video controller on this little Toshiba NB100. The newer driver in Karmic has helped, but there is still room for further improvement. Is there a way that you know of to improve the flash playback performance in Chrome ? Shalom I'd have thought you could probably use something like Audacity (or a command line application, maybe arecord) to capture the audio as long as your sound card has an internal mixer (most do, unfortunately my laptop doesn't). You'd have to turn off system sounds though (such as e-mail notification jingles, beeps, dings etc as they would get recorded too). Hello I know that this is already old news but perhaps to keep it all in perspective, I have started to use 9.04 recently and impressed by the progress since 8.10 which I used before. OK it did not work for me out of the box (using wubi) but with a number of simple configurations everything is well and speech is responsive and reasonably reliable. The reality is that accessibility in the big world is not a priority if we like it or not; I am personally happy to wait for the new version of the distro to settle down - 9.04 is probably the first distro where I feel that I can do some real work with (not using the command line which I used in the good old days and do not wish to use but for backup and some admin tasks again). On a related point in reply to the previous message, Vinux has its place especially for new users where everything is pre configured and in my small way I fully support what Tony is doing. At the same time there is a place for Main distro which are ideally accessible out of the box or with minimal configuration where perhaps more settings are required but one can take advantage of the latest technology and what the main stream are using. Then they would be able to make whatever changes were necessary to get the system fully accessible and include all the best accessible software. That is what I am trying to do with Vinux, but I simply don't have the technical skills and knowledge that Luke and Willie have, and like me they have to earn a living and it isn't likely to come from producing open-source accessibility software unless a government or large charity get involved. I still think it would be great if a ll of the developers interested in VI issues could pool their resources into one distro to rule them all, and this is not an attempt to devalue their work, what they are doing is great, but I sometimes feel that we are all swimming against the tide of the needs of the sighted majority and we are always going to be little fish. Getting Orca working with Karmic
Has anyone gotten Orca working well in Karmic Beta? If so, what changes did you have to make? One thing that seems to have helped was to remove pulseaudio. However, before that, you need to install alsa-oss, or you wont have a sound system at all. This seems to have made Orca able to clear out the speech-dispatcher queue of sound you don't want to hear. It's still pretty unstable. I haven't been able to use it in any productive way for more than a couple minutes at a time before something crashes. Hi Aryan, Do you have python-daap installed? That is the common library that the media players use. daap is a cool protocol if you want to share between computers and it works fine. I prefer to just set up a common nfs or samba share and keep all your files together instead. I've used firefly media server to export daap in the past, i'll have to set it up again. Also in this instance, my 'server' is just another Ubuntu desktop machine, and quite a powerful one at that, so I'd have no issues just running Rhythmbox/Banshee on it all the time, if there was some way to share it. Whatever you do, don't try to fix the problem by upgrading to Karmic. DAAP and DLNA support is completely, totally and utterly broken in Karmic, all servers and all clients (well... I haven't tried Mediatomb as the server or Banshee as the client yet). Thanks for the heads up. I'm not planning up upgrading to Karmic until December/January anyway. This brings up the place where you can type the name of your new share. Sorry for that, this was a last minute fix because upstart does not work in a vserver environment (or the other way around, a vserver does not support upstart) and upgrading will break the system badly. It was the choice between that or two new strings. The strings will be displayed very rarely, its not a common type of setup and only available in some virtual hosting environments. Si como ustedes ven en el titulo yo soy de la celula .NET de desarrolladores en Ambato y si es verdad que Juan Jose Mena envio ese mail a todas las universidades que tiene al a cargo de el programa MSDN Academic Alliance, y para mi no tiene nada de malo el mail, se lo analiza desde el punto de vista en que el Gobierno quiere OBLIGAR a las instituciones a usar como UNICA herramienta el software libre cuando lo que sucede en las universidades es que tanto profesores, estudiantes y autoridades pueden ESCOGER el o las herramientas de software que prefieran o que sea propicio para las materias que se dictan indistintamente de la empresa o distribucion que las patrocine. Es por eso que envio este mail ACLARANDO el porque se nos envio a los lideres de las comunidades y en especial porque conozco en persona a Juan Jose Mena y es alguien intachable y que el echo de que trabaje en Microsoft no significa que sea alguien que odie el software libre. Baixei a versão alpha do novo Ubuntu 9.10 pra testar (rodando por live CD) e criar confiança pra quando sair a versão final do 9.10 eu instalar pela primeira vez um Linux no meu computador. :) Muito bom, o LiveCD serve exatamente para isso, TESTE! Porém quando iniciou o sistema (por Live CD) ele deu a seguinte mensagem : * ACPI*:*Invalid PBLK length* [*5*]. Dei uma pesquisada na internet e acabei achando mais dúvidas do que respostas. Consegui fazer o sistema funcionar utilizando o comando “acpi=off” no boot, mas não consegui descobrir como resolver esse problema permanentemente. Além do mais, li num artigo do Morimoto que o ACPI é muito importante para o sistema, e fiquei preocupado com isso. Quero resolver esse problema pra criar confiança e instalar o novo Ubuntu 9.10 no meu computador. Alguém sabe o que é e como resolver esse problema ? Tem alguma coisa a ver com as placas ASUS? Well, ACPI e correlatos são assuntos mais profundos, pois estás tratando com hardware e kernel. Então sugiro que você não se preocupe tanto com isso, mesmo que esteja aparecendo mensagem de erro, a não ser que você seja da área de engenharia ou computação, aí tem mais é que meter a cara mesmo! Neste caso, sugiro que faças uma instalação de teste em uma partição livre (sem nenhuma intenção de usá-la para dados). Depois podes dar o boot nela e verificar os logs. Deves procurar se informar mais sobre o que é o ACPI e para que serve num PC e num note, principalmente em termos de como o Linux trabalha com ele. Por exemplo, para deixar permanente o acpi=off bastaria colocar a entrada na linha do kernel no grub. Sobre os hardwares Asus, realmente o Linux não se dá muito bem com eles. Questão de suporte da empresa. Mesmo assim já há muita compatibilidade em vários chipsets. Depois dos testes, podes contribuir com a comunidade, enviando um relatório de compatibilidade ou abrindo um bug, caso se confirme esse problema. Eu sei, é bem trabalhoso tudo isso, bem como requer alguns skills em computação, que é difícil de encontrar em um novato a não ser que seja da área. Se não tens as habilidades necessárias e o problema realmente te aflige, podes pagar alguém para fazer o serviço de deixar redondo o teu sistema. É aqui que está a sacada do software livre, o cara vende os serviços, não o software, e aqui mesmo na lista há diversas pessoas/empresas que podem dar esse suporte! Você alterou a sua tabela de partições? Porque se você altera o tamanho ou alguma coisa em alguma partição o UUID dela muda. Daí pode ser por isso que ele não está reconhecendo esse daí. Aconteceu algo parecido comigo, apesar da mensagem de erro diferente. Meu grub não reconhece uuid, não sei porquê, então eu tirei o uuid e coloquei como era antigamente: (hdX,Y). [Ubuntu-BR] Beep muito alto no Gnome Terminal
Toda vez que eu uso a tecla backspace ouço um som muito alto do beep, e isso é muito inconveniente. Já mexi no Configuration Editor, mas não consigo controlar o volume deste beep, queria que fosse baixinho ou mudo. O que eu consegui foi ficar sem som de todo tipo, mas aí também não interessa. Qual variável controla o volume do beep? ou, de outra forma, como mudo isso, alguém saberia me dizer? O estranho é que eu só rodei a atualização e instalei programas como o Netbeans (que eu não creio que altere essa parada que me falou). Cara começa tentando desabilitar o ACPI na BIOS. Pode ser alguma incompatibilidade ainda nao resolvida no Karmic por ser Alpha. ACPI é importante mas nem tanto. Da pra usar bem, por enquanto. Esse problemas serão resolvidos com certeza. Segundo, saiu o RC (Release Candidate) então baixe de novo. Eu por exemplo inventei de instalar o Alpha na minha máquina do serviço (o video é Intel, e o Karmic resolve essa incompatibilidade o Jaunty) e dancei. Tive que reinstalar o Jaunty do zero. Cara, Fiz esse teste e fica azul mesmo. Agora é descobrir se isso é by design ou não. Sobre o GDM tb vi isso. O Karmic tem um novo GDM (É a tela de login). O cara no forum disse q por isso ainda não tem temas pra ele. Eu não sei se isso procede. As alterações agora são feitas no script. Aonde? Nao sei. A segunda coisa é que na tela de login do 9.10, ao clicar no bonequinho azul na parte de baixo do vídeo e selecionar a opção Realçar contraste em cores e depois desmarca-la, a minha tela de login fica azul e não tem mais como retornar a cor padrão, exceto com um boot. Amigos, Estou com problemas de instabilidade de conexão na minha placa de rede sem fio Atheros. Tentei usar o madwifi sugerido pelo próprio ubuntu em *Sistema | Administração | Drivers de hardware* , mas não obtive sucesso. A Rede sem Fio, conecta normalmente, nunca caindo, porém o sinal fica extremamente baixo variando de 1 a 30 % (Estou numa sala sem paredes, em linha reta com o meu DSLink) e a conexão fica extremamente lenta (as vezes nem pinga um site famoso). Usando uma conexão cabeada funciona 100 %, porém não dá para eu esticar um cabo de rede aqui na sala de casa, fica muito feito. Tenta: setterm -blength 0 ou xset b off Toda vez que eu uso a tecla backspace ouço um som muito alto do beep, e isso é muito inconveniente. Já mexi no Configuration Editor, mas não consigo controlar o volume deste beep, queria que fosse baixinho ou mudo. O que eu consegui foi ficar sem som de todo tipo, mas aí também não interessa. Qual variável controla o volume do beep? ou, de outra forma, como mudo isso, alguém saberia me dizer? Paulo, não há nenhum outro aparelho que possa estar interferindo com a rede? Um exemplo são os telefones sem fio que operam na faixa de 2,4 GHz. Dependendo do canal utilizado na rede, ele pode inclusive bloquear toda a conexão. Tente mudar o canal utilizado em seu modem ou roteador. Ah, outra coisa. Se não der certo, tente mudar o computador de posição. Às vezes, o sinal da própria rede pode se sobrepor, causando alguma perda. Não precisa mudar muito, apenas alguns centímetros (uns 30 centímetros afastado da posição original já seria bom). Algumas outras informações: as microondas emitidas não atravessam bem materiais com muita água. Portanto, mesmo o seu corpo, se estiver em uma posição que obstrua a passagem do sinal, pode causar uma perda significativa. Se a sala contiver materiais de metal eles podem refletir as microondas, o que também pode causar interferência. Se o sinal estiver variando muito, tente descobrir se isso não ocorre quando algum outro equipamento é ligado. Como o Linux é de código aberto, é mais comum que terceiros participem diretamente no desenvolvimento do software, sem a necessidade, digamos de gambiarras. Agora uma coisa que costuma ser vulnerável igualmente em qualquer sistema operacional, é o navegador, caso queira ter mas segurança, é possível utilizar as extensões do Firefox, NoScript e AdBlock. Eu entendo como vacina uma espécia de complemento do software anti-vírus que substitui, ou remove, uma sequência de códigos binários identificados como assinatura de vírus em qualquer arquivo, independente se forem falhas do Windows e seus aplicativos. Um vírus pode muito bem se anexar em arquivos padrão ODF, ou imagens GIF, JPG, PNG ou PDF. Aí não seriam falhas do Windows e seus aplicativos (indiretamente sim). Mas minha dúvida diz respeito a se existe uma ferramenta para eliminar esse vírus presente no arquivo para sistemas GNU/Linux, para que se possa curar o arquivo doente antes de repassa-lo a terceiros que podem ser, digamos, lesados, tanto pela presença de vírus, quanto pelo não recebimento do tal arquivo. Se uma das duas seguintes dicas não te salvar, desista: 1. Instale a engine xine para o totem, que é a única que utiliza os codecs w32codecs. Não esqueça de mais tarde abrir o totem correto: sudo apt-get install totem-xine 2. Utilizamos um servidor de usuários com o NIS. E DHCP. Então para uma máquina poder ser utilizada, logada por uma conta do NIS, é preciso receber um IP Dinamico (esta é minha conclusão). Todas as máquinas são clonadas com o G4U. Porém estou encontrando o seguinte problema: Não consigo logar. Nenhum usário loga. Apenas depois de logar com uma conta de administrador local, é que aí, este consegue receber um IP, e após isto, posso sair da conta, e logar via NIS. Pergunto: Creio que o problema seja na máquina cliente DHCP, mas pode ser o próprio servidor? (tem especificamente outra máquina, que não faz parte do LIAP, e que só possui acesso local, que está com esta configuração, se não logar, não recebe um IP, daí esta conclusão). Sendo o próprio cliente, o que devo configurar para que na tela de login, este já receba o IP, via DHCP? Tente instalar o Pulse Audio Device Chooser (apt-get install padevchooser). Depois de uma luta, foi com ele que descobri que para gravar do microfone era só escolher a entrada de monitor do sistema de áudio (no meu caso um Intel HDA).
