[Bug 157267] Re: Firefox script broken if not invoked as /usr/bin/firefox
The shell script is trying to `cd` from /usr/X11R6/bin/ to ../lib/firefox/. Because /usr/X11R6/bin/ is a symbolic link to ../bin this all should resolve to /usr/lib/firefox. However /bin/sh by default behaves differently and for this reason it is recommended to use `cd` and `pwd` with the -P switch (I found this by googling) when symlinks are involved: If the -P option is in effect, the cd utility shall perform actions equivalent to the chdir() function, called with curpath as the path argument. If these actions succeed, the PWD environment variable shall be set to an absolute pathname for the current working directory and shall not contain filename components that, in the context of pathname resolution, refer to a file of type symbolic link. If there is insufficient permission on the new directory, or on any parent of that directory, to determine the current working directory, the value of the PWD environment variable is unspecified. If the actions equivalent to chdir() fail for any reason, the cd utility shall display an appropriate error message and not alter the PWD environment variable. Whether the actions equivalent to chdir() succeed or fail, no further steps shall be taken. At any rate, the attached patch fixes the problem on my system (I just changed the one instance that caused it). Aaron, I was having the same issue with finch. Here's how I've solved it: Firstly you need to open the sound preferences (e.g. with ALT + A). Then you need to select the method Command. In the field Sound command you need to put in the following: aplay -q %s (without quotes). Hope this helps. Good luck! I seem to have solved this problem. It doesn't appear to be a bug as much as a configuration error, at least on my machine. Scouting around I found out that my optical device wasn't listed in /etc/default/udftools. Re: [Bug 179471] Re: Merge audacious 1.4.5-1 and audacious-plugins 1.4.4-1 from Debian unstable (main)
Hi Miguel, It's much easier for me to maintain this package in Ubuntu, as I have all of the patches immediately available to me, allowing me to quickly create the necessary debdiffs correctly. While I typically agree that people should back off when something is assigned, there have been cases in the past where the package has been screwed over. Since I am also part of upstream, this creates additional load on the upstream development resources. As a result, I went ahead and did the merge, so that I would know for a fact that it was done correctly. Hi All, Thanks for all of your comments. Per the kernel team's bug policy, can you please attach the following information. Please be sure to attach each file as a separate attachment. * uname -a uname-a.log * cat /proc/version_signature version.log * dmesg dmesg.log * sudo lspci -vvnn lspci-vvnn.log For more information regarding the kernel team bug policy, please refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies It does sound like this is a regression from 2.6.22. If any of you are ambitious and willing, it would be very helpful if you could do the following: 1) Verify this bug exists in the upstream mainline kernel. Steps to build and boot the mainline kernel can be found here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/GitKernelBuild 2) Perform a git-bisect to narrow down the offending patch which causes the regression. Refer to the following link for help: http://www.kernel.org/doc/local/git-quick.html 3) Lastly, if the bug does exist upstream, it would be great to also open an upstream bugzilla report. [Bug 70739] Re: CPU fans won't start for Thinkpad 770E and 390E
Hi Leann, Actually, now that I have discovered what is going on, I don't think my problem is a linux/ubuntu bug. It is caused by a broken acpi DSDT on my computer. (I even paid to upgrade my bios before finding that article, and it made no difference). It seems that a broken DSDT is not at all uncommon. A quick search of cpu temp in ubuntu bugs finds a few items which may well be realted (85984, 111576, 27233, 152988) and also for cpu fan (72775,64691,70599,140468,160291). (#140468 was exactly the problem I was having in edgy.) For the original problem reported for this bug, it is probably worth looking at a the ACPI settings/logs including what temp it thinks the CPU is and what the trip points, polling frequencies and initial fan settings are. Every single one of those items (reported temps, trip points, polling freq, initial fan state) was broken for the DSDT on my computer. Last night after fixing my DSDT and running a CPU intensive task I got the CPU temp up to 50C (active cooling) and I heard the fan speed up for a little while. After that it wouldn't get any hotter, which I suppose is exactly what it is supposed to do. So unless you think otherwise, I don't think there is any new bug to report.
