[Bug 258162] Re: Postfix local privilege escalation via hardlinked symlinks

2008-08-15 Thread LaMont Jones
It's CVE-2008-2936, and fixed in:
2.2.10-1ubuntu0.2 (dapper)
2.3.8-2ubuntu0.1 (feisty)
2.4.5-3ubuntu1.1 (gutsy)
2.5.1-2ubuntu1 (hardy)
2.5.4-1 (intrepid)

None of these have hit the archive, see also
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/postfix/+bug/257893
I'd expect to see the -security stuff shortly.

CVE-2008-2937 was also assigned for the issue that was fixed in 2.5.3, which
applies if you have a mode 1777 /var/mail.
That should not be confused with any sane configuration of mail.

[Bug 258192] [NEW] problem with paths and binding to ldap server

2008-08-15 Thread Grzegorz Marszalek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dhcp3-server-ldap

Description: Ubuntu 8.04
Release: 8.04
Package: dhcp3-server-ldap 3.1.1-1ubuntu1 (backport from interpid)

Well, when you put in dhcpd.conf something like this:
ldap-server localhost;
ldap-username cn=dhcp,dc=localdomain;
ldap-password password;
ldap-method dynamic;
ldap-base-dn dc=localdomain;

you expect everything to work as in docs :)

But for now each time I've got very strange error msg:
Cannot login into ldap server localhost:389: Success

Another problem was: dhcp server complained about path to leases file.

Both problems was solved by Holger Lüdecke, I've found his post here:
http://www.mail-archive.com/debian-bugs-
[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg529069.html

Thanks Holger! :)

I've attached patch which worked for me below.

2008-08-15 Thread Steve Langasek
Malte,

Please file a separate bug report for your issue, which is unrelated to
the other issues discussed in this bug report.

Plaintext authentication with CIFS is, I believe, a marginal use case
anymore; I won't rule out the possibility of including a fix for this in
an update to Ubuntu 8.04, but for reasons of security I would encourage
you to look into moving away from plaintext passwords for your use.

[Bug 236830] Re: cifs does not support kerberos authentication

2008-08-15 Thread Steve Langasek
I've just checked, and when using sec=krb5 against a server with no
kerberos support, and a client with CIFS upcall support enabled (and
keyutils installed) but without cifs.spnego configured, I get a
different error:

mount error 126 = Required key not available
Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs)

So the 'function not implemented' probably points to a kernel that's not
built with CIFS_UPCALL support. Etienne, please confirm which kernel
version this test was done with.

[Bug 218032] Re: Hardy Heron: Adding SMB printer fails

2008-08-15 Thread Steve Langasek
This is not a design flaw, it's a deliberate design decision; use of
plaintext passwords on an untrusted network is insecure, and in Ubuntu
8.04 smbspool (and other samba clients) will no longer allow negotiation
of plaintext connections unless the user takes explicit action to enable
this.

To enable plaintext authentication, set 'client plaintext auth = yes' in
the [global] section of /etc/samba/smb.conf.

[Bug 220844] Re: wbinfo fails to enumerate users and groups

2008-08-15 Thread Steve Langasek
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and help to improve
Ubuntu.

I see a few inconsistencies in the output you've shown. I don't know if
any of them relate to this bug, but they might, so I point them out.

/etc/hosts:
 127.0.0.1 localhost
 127.0.1.1 ubuntu
 127.0.0.1 ubuntu.domainname localhost ubuntu

This third record is wrong. The authoritative name (the one in the first
column) for 127.0.0.1 must always be localhost. Assuming you want
ubuntu.domainname to be your canonical hostname, this should be:
 127.0.0.1 localhost
 127.0.1.1 ubuntu.domainname ubuntu

/etc/samba/smb.conf:
  workgroup = DOMAINNAME
  realm = DOMAINNAME

This must also be wrong, because a realm is a DNS domain name and a
workgroup is a NetBIOS name. The realm name should therefore have at
least one dot in it, and the workgroup name should have no dots in it,
so these shouldn't be the same. (I've seen reports from other users who
used the realm name as the workgroup name and they didn't have any
problems as a result of this - but it is incorrect and renders your
system incompatible with some others.)

  netbios name = ubuntu

This is not wrong, but definitely redundant; I recommend not encoding
this here, since that increases the number of places you would need to
change it if your hostname ever changed.

# /etc/init.d/winbind stop
# /etc/init.d/samba restart
# /etc/init.d/winbind start
[...]
# net ads join -U Administrator

This looks backwards to me. Surely you need to restart winbind /after/
you've done your net ads join, so that winbind picks up the domain join
information?

ADS doesn't need to be able to resolve your hostname at all in order to
let you enumerate groups or users, so I think the static vs. dynamic IP
question is a red herring, and the real issue is probably that winbind
was not restarted after the join.

Here is an abridged test showing this behavior:

$ sudo net ads join -U Administrator
Administrator's password:
Using short domain name -- UBUNTU-WP
Joined 'DARIO' to realm 'UBUNTU-WP.COM'
$ wbinfo -u
Error looking up domain users
$ sudo /etc/init.d/winbind restart
 * Stopping the Winbind daemon winbind [ OK ]
 * Starting the Winbind daemon winbind [ OK ]
$ wbinfo -u
UBUNTU-WP\administrator
[...]
$

So indeed, wbinfo only works after you've restarted winbind.

I'm therefore closing this bug as invalid; please reopen if you think
this is a mistake.

Subject: [Bug 234862] Ubuntu needs you!

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. In the development cycle for Intrepid there have been some vast
improvements in the open source ati video driver and we could use your
help testing them. Could you please download the latest Alpha CD image
of Intrepid and test this particular bug just using the Live CD? You
can find the latest image at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . Your
testing can help make Ubuntu and the open source ati driver even better!
 Thanks in advance.

debian/control: Bumped standards version to 3.8.0 with no changes. and
Added explicit build-dependency on pkg-config were both added in

Where does the Change paths in platform/gtk-x11, /portable,

introduced in the XubuntuY revisions?

[Bug 205476] Re: wubi MS-Vista drive 82 problem

2008-08-15 Thread docklc

Bug 229631. Missing partitions and space from drive after 8.04 upgrade.
Unrecognized partition table for drive 81. Please rebuild it using a
microsoft compatible Fdisk tool (err=1). What the H. is this? When I
boot Ubuntu, I get this message and my 3rd partition on my HD does not
show up under Ubuntu (at least I think it's no.3--Partition G under
WinXP).

Is this the partition into which Ubuntu went when I set up the dual
boot? I cannot access this partition under Ubuntu, but fortunately, I
don't need much in it. I can boot into WinXP and into Ubuntu (just
downloaded and installed about 200 updates). Ubuntu seems slower than XP
but perhaps thats due to dual boot configuration. I just wish Linux/Unix
used more names that made sense for the unintiated (Grep and Grub and
Sudo don't do it for me)!...Thanks, KLC (only about 45 years computer
experience in the industry and as an independent consultant)

Bug description:
I have installed Ubuntu on my 3 other computer with no problem. However when I
install it to my DSE Scoop 2400 (it has A7S8X-MX motherboard with SiS SI7012
sound card), there is no sound when I play any music or video.

I try Fedora, it has the same problem. I try Mandriva Spring 2008, it has no
problem with sound. I try Debian, it work fine as well.

Because I like Ubuntu so much that I finally try Kubuntu - I suspect KDE may
work with my sound card - and it works. The only problem is that it cannot
display chinese from the files in my flash drive. I install GNOME desktop
package and logon with GNOME session, Firefox can play youtube with sound. When
I logon again in KDE seesion, it can display chinese on my flash drive.

Finally I fix the problem by installing Ubuntu first and then install KDE
desktop. I still cannot get any sound if I play music and video in Gnome session
but everything work fine in KDE session including chinese display.

I love Gnome and hope that you can fix this problem.

[Bug 137431] Re: amarok unmounts external drives

2008-08-15 Thread Alecz20
Why is this marked as Incomplete?

On the other hand, I can confirm this bug. Amarok unmounts the drive
almost every time I close it. I doubt there is any data loss, since the
drive cannot be unmounted while in use unless you use sudo to start
amarok.

If I play music from the USB drive with another player, the drive is not
unmounted by amarok.

I think it is a bug in Amarok, though. Still very annoying!

[Bug 156213] Re: In Gnome, Kde apps umount usb drives when they close

2008-08-15 Thread Alecz20
This bug is very annoying.

A temporary workaround is to have a file open from that hard drive. This
will make the system deny Amarok request to unmount the drive.

For example: if I play music from the USB HDD with another player (or watch a
movie) and I close Amarok, the drive is NOT unmounted.
This also suggests that there is no data loss on the drive when amarok is
unmounting it, because no other app was using it anyway.

Hope this helps, and I hope the bug gets fixed!

[Bug 108060] Re: Custom nvidia-settings changes should be automatically loaded on log in

2008-08-15 Thread MindFlayer
I agree this should be fixed soo. The fix is easy to apply (was posted
in #1) but it might be not so easy for a new Linux-user.

Heck, it took me days to figure out this wasn't a bug of nvidia-settings
but rather a real issue in the distribution configuration. ;)

try adding a fake entry for the IP of the remote machine to your syslog

Re: [Bug 221329] Re: Kubuntu Hardy 8.04 live CD (and install) hangs during boot

2008-08-15 Thread SteveH
Install hangs.

The first Ubiquity screen (Welcome/choose language) is OK.

When I click on Forward, the next screen (Where are you/choose
city/country/time zone) displays - but hangs as soon as I click on the
Selected City selection box. No mouse or keyboard - not even Caps Lock.

I gave it about 5 minutes before giving up (as I know it can be slow), but
there was no further activity on CD or HD.

[Bug 137431] Re: amarok unmounts external drives

2008-08-15 Thread Alecz20
I think I might have found a solution (not really a fix) for this
problem. What you have to do is to add the USB drive to the Amarok
devices and set it to Do not handle. How to do this:

1) make sure your device is mounted
2) start amarok
3) Go to: Setting-Configure Amarok-Media devices
4) Click Add a device
5) Make sure the first options is Do not handle
6) Add a name and the mountpoint (e.g. /media/USB-HDD)
7) Click OK, and Apply, and Ok, whatever... at this point Amarok should not
unmound your drive anymore

3) Push mouse cursor to screen edge to reveal panel so that it unhides.

[Bug 258104] [NEW] [PATCH] gtk apps cannot use remote ipp:// printers

2008-08-15 Thread Nathaniel Smith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libgtk2.0-0

Summary: I can't print, due to a well-understood bug already fixed in
upstream gtk+; please backport the bugfix to hardy. A minimal backport
patch is attached.

--- more details ---

Here's the setup: I have a printer attached via usb to the server
'algernon', which is sharing the printer via CUPS. So the printer is
accessible as ipp://algernon/printer/blahblah. I want to print to
this printer from my laptop, 'ged'. So I went to System -
Administration - Printing on ged, hit New Printer - Internet
Printing Protocol, entered algernon as the host, etc. So at the end
of it, cups on ged knows about the printer on algernon, and printing to
it works fine.

BUT, ged is running up-to-date hardy, which has a buggy gtk, so gtk apps
still cannot print.

The problem is a bug in gtk's cups print backend, where if you have a
local queue which feeds a remote cups-hosted (ipp) printer, then the gtk
print dialog will let you attempt to print to that local queue, but then
it will screw up in actually submitting the print job, and as far as the
user can tell it just vanishes without a trace. (You hit Print, the
dialog box disappears, nothing else happens.)

The exact problem is that the gtk cups backend submits connects to the local
cups daemon on ged and attempts to submit the job, but when it comes time to
tell the local cups daemon which printer it is submitting to, it gives it the
remote url (ipp://algernon.localnet/blahblah) rather than the local url
(ipp://localhost/blahblah). The local host, of course, has no clue what to do
when asked for a printer on a different server entirely. The symptom of this
is that ged's /var/log/cups/error_log says:
  D [15/Aug/2008:03:10:32 -0400] Print-Job
ipp://algernon.localnet:631/printers/HP_LaserJet_2200_USB_1
  D [15/Aug/2008:03:10:32 -0400] Print-Job client-error-not-found: The printer
or class was not found.

Apparently a workaround is to print to the remote printer directly, and
take the local cups daemon out of the loop; however, you can only do
this if you have mdns autodiscovery for the remote printer (otherwise it
doesn't show up as an option in the print dialog at all), and my print
server is running etch, which doesn't have a new enough cups for that.
Also, relying on autodiscovery for the printer I use all day is sort of
silly.

This bug was first noticed on Redhat[1], and the fix is in upstream
(pre-release) GTK+[2].

The upstream fix took two tries; the first attempt was r20185[3], then
r20360[4] reverted r20185 and added the correct fix. As a result, the
patch from r20360 does not apply trivially to the version of GTK+ in
Ubuntu. I'm attaching a reduced patch that includes the bugfix without
the reversion.

Thanks,

[Bug 252045] Re: crash after kernel update

2008-08-15 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Hi Franz,

Can you describe the issue a bit more? Does the entire system hang and
become completely unresponsive? Or are you able to still examine log
files like dmesg output? Do you notice any kernel panics or oops in
your dmesg output after you experience a crash? Are you able to readily
reproduce the crashes or are they at random?

Per the kernel team's bug policy, can you please attach the following
information. Please be sure to attach each file as a separate
attachment.

* cat /proc/version_signature  version.log
* dmesg  dmesg.log
* sudo lspci -vvnn  lspci-vvnn.log

For more information regarding the kernel team bug policy, please refer

Its is no real big deal, just go to places and computer and remount it,
takes seconds, this bug does not happen to everyone so I've heard, but
it has been around since at least feisty.

[Bug 246269] Re: Switched from vesafb to uvesafb, but uvesafb can't work without v86d

2008-08-15 Thread André Barmasse
Bug is confirmed here with Intrepid Ipex on my Sony Vaio with Nvidia and
linux kernel 2.6.26-5-generic. The following messages are displayed
during boot:

[2.152084] uvesafb: Getting VBE info block failed (eax=0x4f00, err=-3)
[2.152140] uvesafb: vbe_init() failed with -22
[2.152193] uvesafb: probe of uvesafb.0 failed with error -22

Trying to manually add vga modes in /boot/grub/menu.lst (for example
vga=791) result in an entirely black screen though the whole booting
sequence. Installing or uninstalling v86d has no influence on this nasty
bug. Would be nice to have back again the possibility for slightly
larger boot display ...

[Bug 238507] Re: Most Gnome applications stop working

2008-08-15 Thread Leon P Smith
Ok, the exact same problem has happened again. I haven't rebooted yet,
and I'm willing to forgo rebooting this machine for an indeterminate
amount of time, though I don't know how long before I'll really need my
machine back. If somebody is interested in instructing me in what
steps I could take to best provide debugging information for this
problem, I am all ears. However, exploiting opportunity will
require prompt attention.

The only GUI applications that appears to work is the file manager and
Compiz. I can successfully start a VNC server and connect to it,
however no graphics comes through the VNC connection, other than a
mouse cursor. SSH access works fine, however.

For starters, is there a way I can change process limits of a running
process, e.g. /proc/PID/limits?, so that I might get some more core
files? Is there some way I can do this through /proc/PID/? I say
this because there is a visual difference on the screen of what happens
when I start applications from the file manager versus starting
applications otherwise.

I am completely up to date, and have upgraded my kernel since the last
time this happened in June.

Brett, I know you confirmed you still have an issue, but glancing at your lspci
output it seems you have different hardware than what TJ originally reported.
Even though you experience the same symptom that's reported here you might need
to open a different bug report. But I'd like to hear from TJ first if this is
actually fixed or not. Thanks.
