Thanks for the answer. I assumed you know more about this bug, but it
seems you just tested it on a PC running Intrepid, the problem did not
occur and you reported this experience here. Upgrading a production
server to an OS-branch that is heavily under development, is definitely
not a good idea. I'll have to wait til the fix gets into Hardy too or
til Intrepid is released (which will be sometime in October or
November).

[Bug 260819] Re: gdmsetup crashes with segment fault

2008-08-25 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instuctions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be
dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch
nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on
the crash report you wish to submit.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 261171] [NEW] ltmodem freezes thinkpad t22 during handshake

Everything seems in order with this modem until I dial. I hear the number being
dialled, the pings and squawks, the white noise, but just when it would
normally establish a connection and go quiet the machine totally locks up. Two
indicator LEDs start flashing in unison, once per second:- the caps lock and
the one just to its right. I have to hold the power key to shut down.
I get the same result with wvdial or minicom.

[Bug 261173] [NEW] acidrip rips DVD with wrong aspect ratio

2008-08-25 Thread marco.pallotta
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: acidrip

I would like to rip my DVD, recorded with my mini-DVD webcam, with ACIDRIP
(version 0.14-0.2ubuntu) but the ripping isn't ok as acidrip rips my DVD with
wrong aspect ratio (in the video settings I disabled crop and scales options so
the movie should be ripped with no size modification). In fact my DVD has only
1 title and one vob file that it's 720x576 but the DVD movie has aspect ratio =
16:9 (1024x576). Either totem or acidrip preview shows it correctly (so they
prescales ok with the .ifo files contents) but with wrong size info. Totem in
fact shows a size of 720x576 (see bug #261168). The results is that the output
file of the DVD ripping is at 720x576 size (4:3) while my DVD is at 16:9
I think that the problem is due to the fact that acidrip only reads .vob size
and doesn't read .ifo DVD files.

Yes, i think this is important and needs the attention of them.
We developers need this... and is a waste of time to compile Qt4 only to enable
Phonon module, since it takes to much time...

Thanks

[Bug 240818] Re: Some Java programs doesn't display characters correctly when scrolling bottom and up with scrollbar

2008-08-25 Thread Dmitri
I also experience this problem on latest Ubuntu 8.04 with both Sun and OpenJDK
Java versions.
It manifests in any scrollable Java window on an attempt to scroll it via mouth
dragging or scroll wheel. Any resizing of the window immediately repaints it
correctly (but this problem altogether makes it any Java development or usage
on my Linux box a waste of time)
I attach sample screenshot from NetBeans. (The problem exists in my application
as well as in NB itself, but NB screenshot shows it better)

Here is my system version (reported by sysInfo tool):
Running Ubuntu Linux, the Ubuntu 8.04 (hardy) release.
GNOME: 2.22.3 (Ubuntu 2008-07-09)
Kernel version: 2.6.24-19-generic (#1 SMP Fri Jul 11 21:01:46 UTC 2008)
GCC: 4.2.3 (x86_64-linux-gnu)
Xorg: unknown (13 June 2008 01:10:57AM) (13 June 2008 01:10:57AM)
Versions of Java I tried it on:
  One is
java version 1.6.0_0
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_0-b11)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 1.6.0_0-b11, mixed mode)
  The other is
java version 1.6.0_06
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_06-b02)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 10.0-b22, mixed mode)
Both JVM were used with GTK LF and with Metal LF - the scrolling problem is
the same.

[Bug 34501] Re: [HARDY] touchpad lockup/drag and lost scroll

2008-08-25 Thread aldebx
I'm glad it works for someone other than me! :D

The reason why I decided to perform that change was that I had noticed
that xserver-xorg-input-synaptics is almost unmaintained (the latest
available version dates July 2007 and is simply a git version, not a
stable release), thus I thought the former maintainer had left some
unstable and untested code into the driver before vanishing. I then
opted for the stable protocol.

Hope to see some more feedback and also know why Ubuntu devs have chosen
the developmental version of an unmaintained driver as the default
setting.

[Bug 261178] [NEW] [intrepid] Random order of disk detection

2008-08-25 Thread Dave Gilbert
Public bug reported:

[This is on Intrepid Alpha 4 kept upto date. Linux gallifrey
2.6.26-5-generic #1 SMP Fri Aug 15 13:54:58 UTC 2008]

The drives on this machine get assigned differently to /dev/sd* on each
boot:

This machine has:
2 PATA IDE discs (both IC35L060AVER07-0)
  a PATA DVD drive (DVD-ROM DVD-116)
  a PATA CD/RW drive (24MAXX 1040)
a PATA zip drive (ZIP 100)

on two controllers; an internal AMD 760 onboard:

00:07.1 IDE interface: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] AMD-766 [ViperPlus]
IDE (rev 01)

and a Promise 20268 PCI card;

sometimes the boot disc is sdb, sometimes it is sda

If you grep the attached log for 'removable' you can see the zip drive
flipflops between sda and sdb:

Aug 24 00:36:33 gallifrey klogd: [5.036714] sd 0:0:1:0: [sda] Attached SCSI
 removable disk
Aug 24 00:38:44 gallifrey klogd: [5.262494] sd 2:0:1:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI
 removable disk
Aug 25 15:21:44 gallifrey klogd: [6.289556] sd 2:0:1:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI
 removable disk
Aug 25 16:11:50 gallifrey klogd: [5.733587] sd 0:0:1:0: [sda] Attached SCSI
 removable disk

(Neither case has had media in any of the removable devices).

similarly grepping for sr[01] shows I think the cdrw and dvd swapping
places.

 ls -l sd[abc]/device sr[01]/device
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 2008-08-25 16:11 sda/device -
../../devices/pci:00/:00:0c.0/host0/target0:0:1/0:0:1:0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 2008-08-25 16:11 sdb/device -
../../devices/pci:00/:00:0c.0/host1/target1:0:0/1:0:0:0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 2008-08-25 16:11 sdc/device -
../../devices/pci:00/:00:07.1/host2/target2:0:0/2:0:0:0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 2008-08-25 16:11 sr0/device -
../../devices/pci:00/:00:0c.0/host0/target0:0:0/0:0:0:0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 2008-08-25 16:11 sr1/device -
../../devices/pci:00/:00:07.1/host3/target3:0:0/3:0:0:0

In this case sdb and sdc are the hard discs.

I suspect this isn't new in Intrepid; for a few verisons that machine
had had boot problems pulling up RAID1 at boot; but it used to work a
couple of versions ago (gutsy maybe).

Fun fun.
The board is a Tyan S2460.

[Bug 261173] Re: acidrip rips DVD with wrong aspect ratio

2008-08-25 Thread marco.pallotta
The only solution I have found to rip DVD correctly is to find the movie
aspect ratio (with mplayer dvd:// I can read it in console) and setting
the acidrip scale option to this value. I have found moreover another
problem: the with field cannot exceed 1000 so if your movie is greater
than it you have to calculate the correct proportion (that in some
circustances cannot be accurate)

[Bug 260962] Re: Gnome Terminal won't accept lowercase 'a' key.

2008-08-25 Thread Eric M. Smith
I can replicate the problem as root, but not as another user.

That said, it appears to be a settings issue where the update or another
action screwed up some settings for gnome-terminal somewhere.

A co-worker indicated there may be a key mapping file which gnome-
terminal uses that has been corrupted. While this seems plausible to
me, I would not know where to look for a file which is common to the
root user and myself, but not to a new user which I just created.

Any/all hints and suggestions are greatly appreciated. Until I get this
working, my Ubuntu system is mostly useless (I'm over 85% CLI and not
GUI work).

[Bug 261181] [NEW] cannot use or find ANY downloaded and supposedly installed required plugins to view pages or hear audio

2008-08-25 Thread Craig Barnes
Public bug reported:

When I go to a webpage and it says Missing PlugIns and download them,
it then asks if I want to install them. Even when I say yes and get a
confirmation message saying that the plugin (or program) HAS been
successfully installed, I don't have any idea where the new plugin or
program has been stored, why it doesn't work, or how to correct the
problem and be able to view the video or get any sound from it when I
click on the play symbol, usually a right-facing arrowhead.

Am totally lost and confused, especially since I am a complete newbie to
any Linux distro. Please keep this in mind if any of you can help.
Yes, I have read the Ubuntu 8.04.1 again and again under Video and
Sounds (I think) and searched for an answer for over a week or almost
two by no with no help or answers received! Am desperate for help,
please. Anybody who steps forward and at least trys to give me some
possible solutons/answers will be my hero and lifesaver before I go
completely insane. Nothing I attempt in Ubuntu's Hardy Heron seems to
work the way its own documentation says it should. I can't even install
my Brother Laser Printer or cable Ethernet modem!!

Thanks to all of you,

Craig Barnes
P.S. Hopefully, as I gain in knowledge and experience, I can and will help as
many members as I can. Promise.

After reading https://bugs.launchpad.net/xserver-xorg-driver-

[Bug 258987] Re: Firefox gives blank page on statrup with an OK button

2008-08-25 Thread Andreas Moog
You are starting firefox as root:

stat64(/root/.mozilla/firefox/37w4fa73.default, {st_mode=S_IFDIR|0700,
st_size=4096, ...}) = 0

So you have to move /root/.mozilla to /root/.mozilla-old and try again.

From your previous comment:

When I go to the folder ~/.mozilla/firefox/, I see following directory
strcuture
cafgdq2t.default
profiles.ini

That shows you have been renaming the wrong profile directory, as i said
in comment 12 ;-)

[Bug 261190] [NEW] problems witht cell!=default

2008-08-25 Thread Peter Cordes
Public bug reported:

I built the Intrepid source packages (6.2~beta2-2) on a Hardy AMD64
system. After installing, I configured with debconf. I chose the cell
name equal to my cluster's name. Something must still be assuming
SGE_CELL=default, though:

$ sudo -u sgeadmin qconf -au peter users
error: cell directory /var/lib/gridengine/default doesn't exist

 I do have a /var/lib/gridengine/perun directory, though.

I'm in a hurry, so I'm just going to reinstall SGE with cell=default

I haven't seen a good tutorial about setting up grid engine, although I
have used it on a Sun cluster.

Maybe It's fixed in 0.110, but it's not released for Hardy, just for Intrepid
(see https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi-support).

[Bug 176611] Re: Unable to exit fullscreen mode in rdesktop with compiz

2008-08-25 Thread müzso
Some additional info for the bug ...
Rdesktop _does_ exit fullscreen mode in the described case, only the window
decorations (title bar) are not added to the window. If you set up the Scale
plugin in Compiz and a hot corner for activation (eg. the upper-left corner),
then start rdesktop in fullscreen mode, try to move the mouse to the upper-left
corner (nothing should happen), press Ctrl+Alt+Enter (some flickering occurs on
the screen, but it _looks_like_ rdesktop is still in fullscreen mode) and now
move the mouse to the upper-left corner again. This time the Scale plugin is
triggered and you can switch to another application.

So this might be an rdesktop bug after all. Sometime later I'll test the
rdesktop version that is now in Intrepid and see if it fixes the
problem.
