What's bothering me (which may be unrelated) is my laptop (Maverick)

experience this on my desktop Maverick machine.

[Bug 661452] Re: tomcat6-instance-create provides incomplete setup

2010-10-20 Thread Thierry Carrez
tomcat6-instance-create was never meant to be a full replacement for the
system instance. It's more a barebones instance that uses the system
binaries, but that you should configure by yourself. You can create as
many of them as you want, and the system doesn't keep track of them (so
it won't deploy .xml descriptor files into them).

[Bug 618600] Re: .etckeeper file should be added to .gitignore

2010-10-20 Thread Thierry Carrez
Right, the issue is that .etckeeper permissions tracking is not
completely integrated into git (or bzr, for that matter).

You need to run etckeeper pre-commit to regenerate the .etckeeper
file, before running status :) If you ignore .etckeeper, then
permissions changes would not be committed.

If you are interested in better integration of .etckeeper into the VCS actions,

Re: [Bug 662435] Re: megatec_usb driver stopped working after upgrade from 8.04 to 10.04

2010-10-20 Thread Arnaud Quette
Hi Michael,

thanks for your feedback! I'm cc'ing the NUT users list for info.
I've also added an entry for your device (Powerwalker Line Interactive VI
1400, using blazer_usb).

Can you please send back an upsc output, and at least check for the shutdown
behavior, if not already done:
http://new.networkupstools.org/user-manual.html#Testing_shutdowns

2010/10/19 MichaelE 662...@bugs.launchpad.net

 It works now!

 I reinstalled 2.4.3 and checked the blazer_usb driver again. First I
 thought it did not work but then discovered a configuration error: When
 changing from megatec to blazer, the value for offdelay needs to be
 changed. In megatec it is minutes and in blazer it is seconds. As it
 does not allow a value smaller than 6, the blazer_usb refused to work
 (it was 1 in megatec).

 Thanks a lot to Arnaud for the quick reply!

thanks goes to Arjen de Korte, a NUT senior lieutenant, who worte the blazer
drivers.

 Here is my new ups.conf now:

 [ups01]
driver= blazer_usb
 port  = auto
vendorid  = 0665
productid = 5161
 # after shutdown, wait 5 minutes after return of power
ondelay   = 5
# wait 1 minute after power-off command before cutting power
offdelay  = 60

[Bug 463684] Re: openldap sections in ubuntu server guide not updated for packages in karmic

2010-10-20 Thread Thomas Schweikle
Does not work for lucid too. Error:

SASL/EXTERNAL authentication started

SASL SSF: 0

ldap_add: Other (e.g., implementation specific) error (80)
additional info: olcModuleLoad handler exited with 1

This is for the documentation found for Ubuntu-Server. I do not see it
fixed, as stated in comment #10

Nearly anything related to ldap seems undocumented, or alt least
outdated if not wrong and error prone. Any docs I found refer to various
variants of backend.ldif all not working. This is quite bad, since
Ubuntu lucid is out since April 2010! It looks a lot like no one
considered to update necessary Howtos to make them work again.

[Bug 663920] [NEW] public IPs unroutable from instances

2010-10-20 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

Obviously the public IPs are not allocated to the instances directly, but are
mapped via NAT on a controller. I don't appear to be able to talk to the public
IP mapped to an instance from the instance itself.
It's a fairly odd thing to be wanting to do, but it works on EC2, so for
compatibility's sake I suggest Eucalyptus modify the NAT rules to make it work.

[Bug 659376] Re: mibs absent from maverick

2010-10-20 Thread Thierry Carrez
This is probably due to licensing reasons, auto-downloading MIBs from
IETF or IANA is certainly considered distributing them. That's why
Debian separated the MIB downloader and required user action to install
them. I don't think Ubuntu would like to differ there... but I could be
proven wrong.

[Bug 663920] Re: public IPs unroutable from instances

2010-10-20 Thread Ricardo Kirkner
Each network interface should be accessible from within the instance. As
the public IP is the only way to connect to that instance, it's fair to
assume that IP binds a network interface (and thus should also be
accessible from within the instance).

In our specific case, we're just trying to access the host via it's
public address, which is not such an uncommon requirement.

I tested the shutdown behaviour and it works as expected. The UPS
disconnected the load and then came back on again after power returned

(maybe read out the remaining battery capacity?).

[Bug 375371] Re: MySQL must not use /tmp

2010-10-20 Thread Clint Byrum
So, now that some time has passed and I've been able to think about this
some, I think we should relax the apparmor profile back to the regulr
tmpdir abstraction.

YES it would be more secure to be able to say you can't create files
even if you want to because apparmor is restricting users.

But its going to break *a lot* of peoples' applications. LOAD DATA
INFILE is a really terrible way to get data into mysql (at least use
LOCAL!) but people still do it. SELECT INTO OUTFILE is also a really
flawed way to extract data from mysql, but people do it anyway.

The added problem of having to change all test suites that start their
own mysqld instance, just so they can create their isolated test
database in the system tmpdir, raises a red flag. These test suites
should strive to run things as close to reality as possible. If we copy
mysqld out of its normal location, we're getting around *all* of the
apparmor protections, and so we're bypassing some other things that
might go wrong when run against the real mysqld.

So, how about we just move tmpdir to /var/tmp/mysql, but leave the
apparmor profile as is?

[Bug 663481] Re: JDBC: statement.setBinaryStream fails iff mysql logging is disabled

2010-10-20 Thread Nhb-web
Yes, there are only two statements failing:

update rpzone set data=?, protocol_version=33 where
zone_id='int_semos_tavern_0';
and
update opobject set data=?, protocol_version=33 where object_id=12

They fail every time with different values.

All other statements (selects, updates, inserts) work without problems.
There is a batch insert using a prepared statement into the npcs table.
So prepared statement work, too.

What is unique about those two failing queries is that they both use
statement.setBinaryStream. The tables are defined as:

mysql show fields from rpobject;
+--+-+--+-+-++
| Field| Type| Null | Key | Default | Extra  |
+--+-+--+-+-++
| object_id| int(11) | NO   | PRI | NULL| auto_increment |
| data | blob| YES  | | NULL||
| protocol_version | int(11) | YES  | | NULL||
+--+-+--+-+-++
3 rows in set (0.00 sec)

mysql show fields from rpzone;
+--+-+--+-+-+---+
| Field| Type| Null | Key | Default | Extra |
+--+-+--+-+-+---+
| zone_id  | varchar(32) | NO   | PRI | NULL|   |
| data | blob| YES  | | NULL|   |
| protocol_version | int(11) | YES  | | NULL|   |
+--+-+--+-+-+---+
3 rows in set (0.00 sec)

They are the only tables with blob fields.

So I went ahead and set up some pbuilders for maverick (amd64 and i386). For
anyone that is interested in testing the 389 Directory Server please add the
following apt line to your sources.list:
deb http://acksyn.org/ubuntu sid main

To install the 389DS server just apt-get install dirsrv. To set it up
run setup-ds

Feedback, bug reports here http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/pkg-

Work is proceeding on the admin server components (apt-get install

To: aquette@gmail.com

I tested the shutdown behaviour and it works as expected. The UPS
disconnected the load and then came back on again after power returned
(waiting the defined delay).

I also attached the blazer_usb output in case this is needed. If there
are other testes required to improve the driver I am happy to do this
(maybe read out the remaining battery capacity?).

This is the output of upsc:

[Bug 664083] Re: package missing ec2-describe-tags

2010-10-20 Thread Eric Hammond
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 649742 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/649742

This is simply a software version issue. The ec2-describe-tags is in
the ec2-api-tools version 1.3-57419, but that version is not available
on Ubuntu 10.04 at this time.

The latest version on Ubuntu 10.04 is 1.3-46266 which correctly does not
include ec2-describe-tags.

This bug might be replaced by a request to upgrade the ec2-api-tools
software package on Ubuntu 10.04.

[Bug 660227] Re: php5-pgsql crash on getting an error back from postgres

2010-10-20 Thread seorc
I had the same problem in maverick for i386: blank response from the
server on bad pg_connect() or pg_query() execution. By the way, the same
happened when calling pg_last_error(), even when there were no
connection or query errors at all. The proposed package solved the
problem.

[Bug 663672] Re: won't mount NFS mounts with space in the name

2010-10-20 Thread Tim White
From my poking around, it appears the bug will be in both this package, and
nfs-common.
showmount's output doesn't allow for parsing as it uses spaces to separate the
fields (exportname and the ipaddress of who can mount it). Ideally it needs to
use a : between the fields not whitespace.
If showmount is modified, then auto.net will also need to be modified. Maybe
another switch can be added to showmount that outputs parsable output. e.g.

$ showmount -e ubuntu
Export list for ubuntu:
/mnt/DVD_rip 192.168.8.0/16

becomes

$ showmount -m -e ubuntu
Export list for ubuntu:
/mnt/DVD_rip:192.168.8.0/16

and the korby mount options become
$ showmount -e korby
Export list for korby:
/Qweb:
/Qusb:
/Qrecordings:
/Qmultimedia;
/Qdownload:
/Public:
/Photos:
/Network Recycle Bin 4:
/Network Recycle Bin 3:
/Network Recycle Bin 1:
/Media:
/Documents:
/DVD_rip:

As you can see, the output of showmount varies depending on the server.
Korby doesn't give the second field that shows what ip's can mount it.
Below is the output of a WD MyBook World Edition II, which doesn't even
give consistent output!

$ showmount -e max
Export list for max:
/DataVolume/Photos   *
/DataVolume/Public   *
/DataVolume/Download *
/ExtendVolume/Media  (everyone)

Ah, sorry, I didn't see that bug because apparently a search for 7.3

importance rather than newest first is a bit of a nuisance, I find.
If it had been newest first I would have seen it immediately.

2010-10-20 Thread Manfred Hampl
There are (at least) two bugs that look rather similar:
bug 658458 and bug 658581
In both cases removal of xserver-xorg-video-nouveau was reported as solution by

Can you check if you have xserver-xorg-video-nouveau installed?
If you have, can you try to remove that package and start the upgrade again?

[Bug 599308] Re: cheetah 2.0.1 is incompatible with python 2.6

2010-10-20 Thread Clint Byrum
Hi Christian, thank you for taking the time to report this bug and help
us make Ubuntu better.

We are in the process of upgrading to the 2.4.3 upstream release right
now (and hopefully at the same time merging debian's latest changes).

You can track that progress in bug #663343 . I imagine once it is done,
this bug can be marked fix released, and 2.4.3 can be backported to at
least Lucid.

[Bug 493503] Re: Newer versions available, v2.0.1 is over 2yrs old with a number of fixes/enhancements

2010-10-20 Thread Clint Byrum
Hi John,

We're in the process of upgrading cheetah to 2.4.3 right now. You can
track the progress in bug #663343. In fact the newer upstream was
already uploaded into natty, though a number of fixes are needed to make
it behave properly given the addition of python 2.7.

Marking as Fix Released, since 2.4.3 is in natty.

[Bug 460483] Re: The plugin should allow Evolution to close to the indicator-applet

Hi Geoff,

I've just tested it and it works great, apart from one thing: if I
uncheck show evolution on startup, the window is still visible the
first time it is launched.

Another thing: is it normal that, although the window is visible, it
doesn't appear in the window list?

[Bug 663136] Re: xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd is missing in maverick

2010-10-20 Thread Murz
Didn't see #537640 as duplicate, thouse bug is for Lucid and about ati driver -
no radeonhd, and in comment #98 I see:
With kernel 2.6.32-24 i have still this problem on an IBM T60 with ATI
Technologies Inc M52 [Mobility Radeon X1300]
Not only the secondary display but both displays are flickering

Why xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd is missing in Maverick? If it compiled
from sources and work normally, much useful for people is to install it
from core or from any ppa.

Torsten Krah, does it work normally after compiling on your Maverick?

[Bug 647270] Re: package fglrx 2:8.723.1-0ubuntu5 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

2010-10-20 Thread Agronskey Hooper
OK, I'm now on 10.10 and this issue appears to have been resolved
ultimately.

I believe the issue is that my graphics card probably never should have
existed in our plane of reality.

Even under Windows driver support for it was nigh nonexistent, so I
suppose I should not have been so surprised by its absence in Linux as
well.

ASUS AH3650 SILENT/HTDI/512M Radeon HD 3650 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 AGP
4X/8X HDCP Ready Video Card

When this card came out pretty much everyone in their right mind had
switched to motherboards with PCI Express slots. All of ATi/AMDs
drivers for this range of chipsets presume a PCI Express installation.
But someone at either ASUS or SAPPHIRE, possibly both as they each offer
a version of this graphics card, came up with the brilliant idea of
offering this as an AGP card for those such as myself who had aging
hardware that just needed a good graphical kick in the pants.

I was happy to grab it as a replacement for my old AIW Radeon 8500DV.
But alas, it was never quite what I expected. So I've ordered new
hardware and will be putting together a new system within the next week
as my primary Ubuntu workstation. Once that's done this system will be
relegated to file serving duty using FreeNAS or something instead.

Ultimately fglrx doesn't like this graphics card and neither does
anything else. It is truly a forgotten bastard child.

[Bug 396015] Re: Invalid range for meters

2010-10-20 Thread Adam Weiss
I would venture the argument that a logarithmic scale would be the best
way to approach this. The autoadjusting linear scale looks pretty, but
does little to convey useful information as to actual utilization or
throughput and is such just plain confusing. I think most users are
probably interested in getting an idea as to the throughput of the
network or disk. Setting maximums specific to machine could make a
pretty graph, but it also involves hidden differences in scale from
machine to machine.

Plus, it would be dead easy to implement.

[Bug 663019] Re: pulseaudio fails to start if ~/.pulse/default.pa exists

2010-10-20 Thread David Henningsson
 Ok, thank you for explaining that. It's a very unexpected way of
operation. I'm sure it's going to catch out other people in the future.

People think of it as a configuration file, but it is rather a script. I
think that could be the gotcha.

 I wonder why doesn't the pulseaudio documentation say anything at all
about it. Could you pass this upstream to ask that a few words of
explanation be added in the pa docs?

Ok, but could you then explain where you would look, and what the text
would look like to give you that information? It would be good for me to
know where users are looking for information.

 Meanwhile, in my good faith attempt to answer the request for more
information in this report, it somehow broke my package system as
described in my previous two comments.

Hmm, I'm not an expert in that area, but I think running sudo apt-get
with the --fix-broken flag, e g sudo apt-get dist-upgrade --fix-broken
might help. Or it might tell you what's wrong and what to do about it.

[Bug 663119] Re: Unneeded items in System Preferences

2010-10-20 Thread Vish
The settings and preferences is being given a makeover as part of GNOME 3, for
its new control center :
http://live.gnome.org/Design/SystemSettings

A library is available for developers wishing to implement new Settings
Panels. If anyone is an app maintainer, they should look into porting
the setting to the new panel api.

This is a major task and not a simple change, Hence marking as Invalid for
papercuts.
I dont expect any changes from an Ubuntu desktop discussion either. Some of the
items are there on purpose and intended, eg: Broadcast [Gwibber] preferences
