[Bug 1693739] [NEW] Need ability to structure VM list (categories, grouping)

2017-05-26 Thread Andy Brook
Public bug reported:

The Virt-Manager UI is great, it does all the things that one needs to
manage low numbers of VM's, but it starts to creak as the number of VM's
and complexity rises:

1) I want to group VMs, for a simpler management and sequenced auto-
start

If I have a group of VM's that are related (eg a a cluster of nodes, a
db, a shared file store) they need to be started and stopped in a group,
in a particular order. Using 'start on boot' for each is a
sledgehammer. Ideally, I could group these VMs, replacing the VM
entries with an expandable group. The Group could be set to auto start,
the VM's within could be ordered for startup. Benefit is less
repetitive manual startup and reduced volume of VM listings.

2) I want to categorize VM's, and manage permissions to those categories

currently there is no way to categorize VMs, there is just a huge list.
I want to be able to setup specific categories e.g. DEV, UAT PROD.

Once grouping and categorizing is possible, it is then possible to
consider authorization over the management of the VM's. Currently, it
seems possible for anyone with access to stop/start any VM. This may be
fine for DEV, but not PROD, that should be restricted, but there are no
means to do that.

These features would put Virt-Manager onto a more scaleable deployment
path. If this/these requests need to be logged somewhere else, let me
know.

[Bug 1675863] Re: Nautilus crash after renaming an ODS file whilst in Filtered view

2017-03-24 Thread Andy Brook
When this happens, the rename actually succeeded, so I usually just
relaunch nautilus and open the file. Having logged this, I was doing
some more replication checks, straight after the crash, it was not
possible to duplicate, but I really get this a lot.

If there are more diagnosis steps I can take to capture more information
at the point of crash, let me know (I submitted the data from the Oops
window, so any data from there will be 'somewhere')

[Bug 1507981] [NEW] openxenmanager, cant perform host shutdown through right click after starting vm

2015-10-20 Thread Andy Brook
Public bug reported:

Reproduction steps:
1. Start a vm
2. Use right click to try and shut it down

Outcome:
  File "window.py", line 1335, in on_treevm_button_press_event
self.update_tabs()
  File "window.py", line 670, in update_tabs

self.xc_servers[self.selected_host].update_tab_vm_general(self.selected_ref,

  File "/usr/share/openxenmanager/oxcSERVER.py", line 1687, in
update_tab_vm_general
if "name" in guest_metrics["os_version"]:
KeyError: 'os_version'

If I restart openxenman, then it works, so is somehow related to vm
actions.

I noticed that the problem isn't immediate, I can start a vm, still have
the options to shutdown for a while, then it breaks

For a stable build I had to rollback to 11.10, I can't take the downtime
associated with diagnosing this, 12.04 wasn't stable for me, 12.10 didn't
cure it either, fingers crossed for 13.04. Until everyone says yay all
fixed, I wont be upgrading ;(

It's pathetic really, because I have been a strong supporter of ubuntu,

Yesterday I decided to upgrade my kernel to 3.4. But no luck. Today it

When it crashes, the keyboard lights blinking. No mouse or keyboard or
ssh or telnet works. It will eventually restart itself after a half a

[Bug 368419] Re: apt-mirror i18n files

2012-04-24 Thread Andy Brook
In my humble opinion it's bugs like this that really hurt Ubuntu chances
in the corporate world, it's certainly causing us some pain. We've just
setup an internal apt-mirror and now found that it isn't going to work,
and hacking in rsync to fill in the gaps isn't really an option as it's
punching extra holes in the firewall.

Can I encourage people to click at the top to say this bug affects you

[Bug 665296] Re: No microphone _device_ found, ever, internal or via jack

2010-10-23 Thread Andy Brook
Strangely, a day later, I noticed I had no audio OUT. So I unpicked the
above package, and reinstalled all linux-alsa related components. NOW
there is an internal microphone and all is working.

The only thing Ive done _differently_ is to add the following into the
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=hp-dv5
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1

I think the third line is the magic incantation to get this pavilion up
and runngin with mic support.

I have a solution, but as it didn't happen by default on install, is
that still a bug? Leaving the decision to you, thanks for your help!

[Bug 607128] [NEW] All passwords unavailable...

2010-07-19 Thread Andy Brook
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: revelation

I upgraded to 10.04 from 9.04, revelation stopped working. I can launch
it, it lists password entries, if I select one I can see the user and
other info, but the password is just starred out. Trying to open a
password entry with a double click results in:

The entry 'myentry' does not have all the data required to open it.

[Bug 398733] Re: Dovecot Plain auth broken in 1.1.1, fixed in 1.2.1

2009-09-23 Thread Andy Brook
I don't see the original config file attached here, so I attach (see
line 847). another dump of the current dovecot settings (which doesn't
tell me the exact release 1.1.1.XXX )

My current deb version is '1:1.1.11-0ubuntu4', which according to
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/d/dovecot/ got released in
April, so that must be the version I had then

I have just switched back from 1.2.1 to the current 1.1.1.11 ubuntu
version. Annoyingly I cannot now replicate the problem in that version.
I wonder if by installing 1.2.1 Ive overwritten the /usr/lib/dovecot
files so cannot now reproduce? this would fit as the pop login bit is
what was causing the problem.

Does the attached config file help? When would 1.2.x be coming into
Ubuntu land anyway?

[Bug 398733] [NEW] Dovecot Plain auth broken in 1.1.1, fixed in 1.2.1

2009-07-13 Thread Andy Brook

Re: [Bug 72609] Re: K3b temporarily ejects disk before verification

2009-05-26 Thread Andy Brook
The following will give you fingerprint info, chalkup under workarounds:

md5sum /dev/cdrom0
md5sum /someplace/myfile.iso

2009/5/26 mlg7 m...@yandex.ru

me too. On a laptop, it ejects the disk and cannot get it back.
Well, I want k3b to have a VERIFY DISK AGAINST ISO IMAGE command
because, well... I do not want to create another ISO image just to compare
the result... A better approach would probably be calculation of the MD5
sum of the burned disk, but I think it will sooner do it the hard way than
I find out the clever guy's path.

[Bug 195982] Re: Shift key (and caps lock) stop working when using VMWare

2008-06-30 Thread Andy Brook
Just seen this today, been driving me nuts for a month or two. Just as
BassKozz, I have VM's (vmware server) that are running where correct
behaviour is observed, however, keyboard lights stop responding after
some period of time, an X reboot (gdm restart) solves it.

I cant apply the previous comments regarding the ~/.vmware/config file,
I dont have one in my version of vmware. next time I'll try taking out
vmware now thats been possibly pinpointed.

System updated as of 7th Sept 07. Ive had this problem since I started
using Gutsy (tribe4+)

The Elapsed timer keeps going up but no verify occurs.

One funny, the k3bsetup2 app that handles 'sudo-ising' for cd writing
was not installed by installing k3b, apparently this isnt a bug (darned
if I know how to install it). Perhaps this is related.

[Bug 88320] Re: Feisty: Firefox/SVG re-rendered (slow) during a tab-switch.

2007-04-03 Thread Andy Brook
Alex: I tried latest 2.0.0.3 for both edgy and fiesty, its the same on
each OS release. [I have 200 odd fiesty updates pending from yesterday
- waiting a collegue to give me the boot-ok all-clear :) If it makes a
difference I'll comment.

The format for this application is Java/JSP web-application running on
Edgy/Jboss/SUN150 JRE. It gets user data from Active Directory and other
clocking systems.
The struts code forwards to a custom JSP which outputs an SVG. To work around
windows 2000/IE6 SVG rendering bugs I EMBED the content in a web page. All
components are computed from some hard coded offsets so that the two level tree
automatically lays out.

To give an better idea of what I'm rendering I've attached a screen
grab, from this you should be able to see the following:

[misc]
4 flag images
18 vertical tics
1 horizonal tick
2 Text objects (refresh and Note)
1 mouse status (click/drag) indicator
background javascript that loops ever 10S (used for a 5minute refresh countdown)

[user details x1]
1 user image
10 text objects

[ hierarchy details x18]
1 background box, gradient shaded (the white bar is a known bug in the gradient
code)
1 transparent hit-box (outlined) in top 55% of each
1 user sillouette image
1 small telephone icon
7 text objects (obscured)

The SVG makes use of

-
To clarify: when I say switching tabs I talking about switching from a non-SVG
content page back to my generated SVG.

If I leave the SVG unscrolled, it appears left aligned, with 50% not
visible (browser is on one screen at 1600x1200) off the right hand part
of the EMBED. Switching to other tabs and back introduces no real delay
in rendering on fiesty: (My main dev box, Opteron 2.0Ghz, 3GB ram) . If
I scroll right so that the user info section (top left) is half off-
screen to the left, when I switch tabs and back to the SVG, it takes a
full second or so to render. Does the SVG render render at 0,0 and then
do some kind of offset re-render? Is the browser responsible for
positioning EMBEDed content? I don't know.

On edgy (HP laptop, AMD64 2.20 GHz 2GB) I seem to get the delay
switching tabs irrespective of whether the image is far left or not.
Fiesty seems to have improved the performance for left aligned EMBEDed
SVGs.

I'll try and put an example WAR together demoing the issue with
contrived data, hopefully in the next few days.

[Bug 88320] Re: Feisty: Firefox/SVG re-rendered (slow) during a tab-switch.

2007-03-26 Thread Andy Brook
That example does work fine I agree. On further investigation this is
an issue on Edgy as well as Fiesty. The major difference the example
given and my SVG is that mine is loaded via an Embed TAG, and can be
quite wide (fills 1600x) making use of many computed rectangles,
shadings, images and text (its an org chart).

I wonder of the complexity of the SVG is on the edge of being rendered
quickly enough. Hardware is Opteron 248, system has 3GB ram...

If the SVG is embedded (ebmed tag) and the scrollbar is used to view half way
accross the rendered image, switching tabs does seem to take a second or so
more.

My generated image can be rendered with no delay if scrolled far left
(origin), but if I start to scroll right (and test tab switching), after
about 5cm of scroll the 'delay' described in this bug kicks in.
Something about changing the viewport of an embedded image?

[Bug 88320] Feisty: Firefox/SVG re-rendered (slow) during a tab-switch.

2007-02-27 Thread Andy Brook
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

I've noticed that Feisty/Firefox 2.0.0.1 renders SVG data every time I
switch the tab. It takes maybe 1 or 2 seconds to render the SVG.

On Edgy/Firefox 2.0.0.1, the rendered SVG is 'cached' and does not
suffer this re-rendering delay.

This behviour seems to be a backward step and I think its a bug.

[Bug 88408] OS Disk cache not reclaimed on demand for programs

2007-02-27 Thread Andy Brook
Public bug reported:

I've noticed this on and off since starting to use Ubuntu Dapper. If my
machine is running for a while, I load a VMware image, perhaps jboss,
evolution, start and stop a few things and I end up with a situation
with 66% cache and 33% programs reported in the gnome System Monitor.

All well and good. Its what happens next thats annoying. I have 3GB of
ECC ram, If I run another application, eg Eclipse, the memory usage
starts to go up, and hits 100%, followed by an OutOfMemory problem /
crash of Eclipse. This is nothing to do with Eclipse, closing other
applications to provide more headroom allows Eclispe to run.

I would have expected the disk cache to be reclaimed fgr programs when
available ram is consumed, why is it not? Am I misreading the gnome
System Monitor.

Going off piste to linux-mm.org, I found this:

http://linux-mm.org/Drop_Caches

This is exactly what I was thinking should be done automatically. I
went from 66% cache and not being able to run programs, to 5% cache and
being able to carry on.

The bug is that this doesn't happen automatically, and hasn't ever
AFAICR.

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2007-01-04 Thread Andy Brook
In my company (global audio brand) bar one (mainframe) exception, all
office applications and related systems run on windows. Inroads have
been made in some areas with Edgy being used for development boxes,
production 'appliances' and development/production servers.

We hand out Ubuntu CD's to anyone who expresses an interest but as with
most corporate environments, we don't make the decisions, we can only
demonstrate and advocate.

Re:previous posters comment, I couldn't agree more. If people aren't
educated with regards to the bigger picture of OS's, they are destined
to become the corporate decision makers of tomorrow, persisting the bug.

Self-preservation may also come into it - like 'nobody got fired for
buying IBM kit' a decade or more ago, today 'nobody gets fired for
buying M$ tech' - it maintains the status-quo and is within the decision
makers comfort-zone (albeit quite small :)

In any case, Ubuntu works (mostly) for me and is getting better all the
time, keep the good work up!

p.s. shameless bcm43xx bug plug: I _really_ would like this to work on a
64bit/2GB ram machine, though I'd settle for not causing a kernel panic
:)

[Bug 77953] Edgy (i386 desktop) install fails to boot when installed to a SCSI disk (initrd missing aic drivers)

2007-01-04 Thread Andy Brook
Public bug reported:

I just installed edgy from the desktop i386 distro. It completed ok,
but on booting it says cant find:

and
/lib/modules/2.6.17-10-generic/kernel/drivers/scsi/aic7xxx/aic79xx.ko

as the / filesystem is on a scsi drive I cannot boot.

I cannot rebuild the initrd to include the right bits because I cannot
boot, and the install CD doesnt appear to be able to provide
mkinitrd

[Bug 77953] Re: Edgy (i386 desktop) install fails to boot when installed to a SCSI disk (initrd missing aic drivers)

2007-01-04 Thread Andy Brook
I've just looked in the (initramfs) shell that is dropped to on a failed
boot under the folder:

/lib/modules/2.6.17-10-generic/kernel/drivers/scsi/aic7xxx/ is
present, the files aic7xxx.ko and aic79xx.ko are also present.

I tried inserting the module by hand with insmod aic7xxx but I got an
'Invalid module format' error message for both.

are these modules somehow not compiled for i386?

I've seen ubuntu posts mention the failing to install to SCSI and
methods to solve it (rebuild initrd) but this can only be done *after*
you have a system that can boot, which doesn't help people installing to
SCSI

find the spadmin application in the open office tree, confusingly this

run this, choose properties, click on the (system configured) lpr

For a future fix, I reckon part of the oo install should pick the

[Bug 50432] Running wpa_supplicant with 2.6.15-25 / bcm34xx causes hard lockup

2006-06-20 Thread Andy Brook
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wpasupplicant

Until 15-25, ifconfig eth1 would cause a hard lockup, due to 1 1GB limit
within the bcm kernel driver (see https://launchpad.net/bugs/44911 for
history).

In 15-25 this has been fixed and ifconfig doesnt cause a hang. However,
running wpa_supplicant with the following now results in exactly the
same symptoms, so perhaps there is a related issue?

I used the following command:
wpa_supplicant -ieth0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
{ Ive tried using -Dwext but this doesnt seem to work with bcm43xx, leaving it
out seems to at least let me scan stations - I havent got it working yet.. }

I think this is a bug because with 2.6.15-25 and 1GB of ram I could do
this, since I updated the kernel and upped the RAM to 2GB, this problem
occurs.

[Bug 50309] OpenOffice print icon always selects defunct Generic printer, not the system default

When using open office, using the print icon in the toolbar, I hope to
just print to the only printer I have configured. Unfortunately there
is a 'Generic' printer that doesn't result in a printout, this Generic
printer appears to be the one selected when the toolbar icon is used.
When using File/print, the print dialog shows this Generic printer being
selected, I have to scroll down one to pick (the only) configured
printer in the system.

I dont know if this is a open office problem or not. The active printer
is marked as the default through System/Printers so I suspect open
