Re: [Bug 195266] Re: Nautilus does not update trashcan icon

2008-05-07 Thread Erik Hill
Yes, I have just tried that, and discovered that:

The new user trash icon behaves in exactly the same buggy way, that
is, it doesn't update with adding stuff to an empty trashcan nor
emptying it, although opening it does show the items in there.

Stranger, when I logged back out and back into my old account, the
trashcan icon had completely disappeared! However, it is still
there, it just isn't visible, since right-clicking on it does open
up a trashcan context menu.

Sometimes, display things are compiz related. I tried turning off and
on compiz but that doesn't change anything.

Adding the line:
append key=info.capabilities type=strlistportable_audio_player/append

under the lines:
  !-- T30 UMS firmware v1.7 --
  match key=@storage.originating_depvice:usb.product_id int=0x1019

fixed the problem partially. Now, Gnome detects the player as a music player,
and shows a little music player icon, then launches Rhythmbox automatically.
But Rhythmbox does not detect the player! However I can copy music to it
directly from the desktop.

Yes, I can reproduce this, and I am running Hardy (latests updates as of
April 9th), and I have an Intel 945GM video chipset on an Acer Aspire

To define what this is:

If and only if I am running compiz, and leave the machine on over night,
then use it the next morning, in the first few seconds of use,
everything on the X screen will freeze, but the mouse will move and Alt-
SysRq-k (to kill the X server) works and kills it. I would have
attached my Xorg log but it seems to have moved somewhere else, I don't
see it in Hardy...

[Bug 207453] [NEW] Does not detect iRiver T30 as a music device

2008-03-26 Thread Erik Hill
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal

Recently reinstalled hardy heron daily, while an earlier version of
hardy heron I had installed seemed to work, it no longer does. I have a
T30 Pure music player. When I plug it in, it appears only as a usb
storage device, not as a music device. It is UMS formatted, with 1.71
firmware. There does appear to be a section for it in 10-usb-music-

device, but the icon nevertheless does not appear correctly.

[Bug 136260] Re: No wake from suspend on Acer Aspire 5601AWLMi (Tribe 5)

2007-09-07 Thread Erik Hill
I have followed the procedure to a point. The relevant area in the
dmesg is this:

[ 13.247188] Magic number: 7:771:857
[ 13.247277] hash matches device ptyv9
[ 13.247290] hash matches device ptysc
[ 13.247556] Freeing unused kernel memory: 364k freed

(leaving the Freeing unused... because it shows where the list ended)

The next part of the procedure would have me remove ptysc. I'm not sure
what that is, I think it's the new USB driver? In any case I suppose
it's compiled in and can't be removed (lsmod doesn't show any ptysc or
ptyv9). Is there a way to disable it? How to proceed?

[Bug 136260] No wake from suspend on Acer Aspire 5601AWLMi (Tribe 5)

2007-08-30 Thread Erik Hill
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.22

The previous bug report asked me to re-report this bug on the new
version of the kernel, as they will not fix it on the old version, so I
am doing so.

In this bug, my laptop suspends (the little amber light goes on, screen
goes blank, harddrive powers down, and so on), but will not wake. Rather
than waking, the harddrive busy light turns on for about 20 - 25
seconds, then turns off. There are other indications of the computer
coming to life (such as the harddrive spinning up), but the screen
remains resolutely black, the backlight remains off, and so on. It
cannot be woken further from this point,

Although this is on a new version of the kernel, exactly the same
behavior can be observed on previous kernel versions, such as linux-
source-2.6.20.

Okay, some attachments...

lspci with one v in the -v.

This problem occurs over time, about 10-15 minutes of heavy use is
enough to bring it on. CPU is not maxed (this is a dual core -- neither
CPU core is maxed or even over about 5% or so when this happens). Yet,
the cursor locks up, windows grey out (with beryl running, or lock
without it running) and finally there is no longer any response. This
really feels like a buggy kernel to me.

dmesg, who knows, might be useful. Anyone have any ideas about how I
might go about isolating this bug or making the report more useful or
informative?

[Bug 102235] Feisty behaves strangely under file IO load

2007-04-03 Thread Erik Hill
Public bug reported:

Feisty Beta version. Under high file IO load (such as during an OS
update), the system will crawl. Music will skip, firefox will freeze,
all other apps will freeze. Finally, after several minutes, if the
memory use is high, the system will freeze as a whole and no other
operation is possible (mouse pointer included). Edgy did not have this
problem.

To reproduce for me, I simply need to run several programs (firefox,
Update Manager, ktorrent, totem). I have 512MB, this problem usually
appears when I have swap shut off. It isn't purely running out of
memory, because I can routinely do exactly the same activity (with swap
off) in Edgy and get only a mild slowdown, whereas Feisty hangs. It
appears to be going slower and slower until you have to wait 5 or six
_minutes_ to, for example, switch to a console.

I realize that this bug report is somewhat useless, I've tried to come
up with a clearer way of reproducing the bug, but can't do it. With
this bug, Feisty is unusable to me.

Re: [Bug 63560] Re: installing 915resolution for the correct resolution shouldn't be necessary

2007-03-30 Thread Erik Hill
Okay, installed it and am using it... It does fix the 1280x800
problem, I get that resolution even if 915resolution is not installed.
However sometimes when I log out and log on again, I get a black
screen (never got that before). I have to kill xorg (ctrl-alt-delete)
to get it back.

I had to uninstall xserver-xorg-video-i810 and xserver-xorg-video-all
to get this to install.

[Bug 74768] Re: No suspend in Acer Aspire 5601AWLMi on Herd 1

2007-01-12 Thread Erik Hill
Bug fix has no effect (does not change the wrong behavior of) the most
recent and updated version of linux-image on feisty (2.6.20-5). Suspend
still does the following:

Suspend,
Upon restore, light the harddrive busy light for 20-25 seconds, and then,
Do nothing. No backlight, no response of any kind.

This is identical behavior as to every previous version of linux-image
back to when I first used it on this computer (first release of Dapper).

I'm curious which version of linux-image this will appear in. I've tried it

Re: [Bug 74768] Re: No suspend in Acer Aspire 5601AWLMi on Herd 1

2006-12-18 Thread Erik Hill
Okay.

The new kernel installed today. It did not update menu.lst in /boot/grub,
however, I had to do that by hand. This is what I have in
/boot/grub/menu.list (to check to see if it is right):

title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.20-2-generic
root(hd0,0)
kernel
/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.20-2-genericroot=UUID=45dd5d51-d66a-4a3b-bd21-146fe0ebfdf4
ro quiet splash
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.20-2-generic
quiet
savedefault

output of uname -r:
2.6.20-2-generic

I updated menu.lst, rebooted, confirmed that it was running the newest
kernel, then retested.

No change in suspend behavior at all. Like before, I can suspend (in this
case, using the log out menu, and selecting Suspend). Computer will
suspend correctly (it seems). Upon waking, the CD drive spins up, the
harddrive light goes on for about 20 seconds, and then nothing. The
backlight does not come on. I have to hard shut off, by holding the power
button down for a few seconds.

[Bug 75451] Re: Any software using SDL for sound on the Acer Aspire 5601AWLMi

2006-12-16 Thread Erik Hill
I've looked around the forums. People have tried using an .asoundrc
file to fix the problem. I cut-n-pasted one, which I will attach. This
file fixes the problem above, but creates many other problems, so it is
not a useful solution.

However, it might shed some light on what's going wrong.

[Bug 75451] Any software using SDL for sound on the Acer Aspire 5601AWLMi

2006-12-12 Thread Erik Hill
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libsdl1.2debian-alsa

Steps to reproduce:

#1: Install Edgy Eft final OR Feisty Fawn Herd 1. (tested on a use entire
harddrive fresh install of both)
#2: Confirm that sounds works fine on this laptop, by for example playing an
.ogg file with Movie Player.
#3: Install any game or software that uses SDL for its audio, such as almost
any emulator (uae for example), or frozen-bubble.
#4: Note that the sound coming from the software is scratchy and skips. If
needed, I will record a sample and attach it to this bug.

I am referring to onboard sound (but have not tested with external sound
yet, I will do so in the next few days and add a comment). The onboard
chipset listed by lspci as:

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High
Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)

This behavior was observed on this system before any config file was
changed, so they should all be at their defaults.

I am guessing that it's the package I chose (libsdl1.2debian-alsa)
because that's the one that is installed by default for SDL it seems,
but I suppose it could be any deeper part of the sound system.

I have also installed alsaplayer-command and alsaplayer-alsa just to
test the performance of the alsa system, isolated from other layers. It
worked just fine.

Re: [Bug 74768] Re: No hibernation or suspend in Acer Aspire 5601AWLMi in Ubuntu Feisty Fawn Herd 1

2006-12-09 Thread Erik Hill
Sorry about the delay. After this problem, I started getting serious
filesystem errors. I finally decided to play it safe with a reinstall.
The reinstall (of Herd 1) was of the use entire harddrive type. After
that, hibernation worked perfectly.

Suspend still fails to wake in exactly the same way as the previous releases
(Edgy and Dapper).

On 12/8/06, Luka Renko [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

When you talk about suspend, you mean to RAM? Compared to hibernate
 which is to disk, right?

It seems that at least you have regression of hibernate support, so
 please provide the following:

 Output of: cat /var/lib/acpi-support/*-*
Content of the following files: /proc/swaps
 /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume

Then I would suggest that you run hibernate from terminal with following
 command:

sudo pmi action hibernate 21 | tee hibernate.log

 Then attach hibernate.log file.

2006-12-08 Thread Erik Hill
Okay, I'm running on Feisty now (upgrade-manager -c -d).

Well, it's exactly the same as Breezy and Edgy unfortunately. Suspend, but
won't wake. Instead, it just sits there with the hard drive light on for 25
seconds. Then nothing will get it to activate it's screen again, and the
kernel (as far as I can tell) is crashed. On Edgy, even removing every
possible module from the kernel and running in single user mode (and without
X) and sending the suspend command directly to /proc or /sys (wherever it
was, I forget) gave the exactly same symptoms. I really would like suspend
and hibernate to work.

Under Edgy, hibernate worked, but under Feisty, it just blacks the screen
and leaves you needing to enter the password to unblack it, as if you had
closed the laptop lid with do nothing as the option.

Note that in Edgy, the options are there (enabled), but do not work

 stops working).

When I saw them disabled, I assumed that this was an improvement
(correctly identified that it doesn't work), not as being a feature of the
liveCD. Is there a way of testing suspend even in a livecd situation
(forcing it?) just to see if it can wake (whether or not it gets the CD
working correctly again is another issue).

[Bug 74771] Feisty Fawn Herd 1 desktop iso boots to 1024x768, not 1280x800 on Acer Aspire 5601AWLMi

2006-12-06 Thread Erik Hill
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

On an Acer Aspire 5601AWLMi, the desktop-i386 live CD for Feisty Fawn
Herd 1 boots into 1024x768, even though the natural resolution for
this laptop's LCD is 1280x800. This is an improvement on Ubuntu Edgy,
which booted into 640x480.

On Edgy, the problem can be fixed with 915resolution, however this extra
step was difficult to find and should not have been necessary.

sudo 915resolution -l outputs the following as the first four lines (the
remainder of the lines are BIOS mode lines):

Chipset: 945GM
BIOS: TYPE 1
Mode Table Offset: $C + $269
