[Bug 1943833] Re: Failed to update metadata for lvfs

2021-09-18 Thread Forage
Brian is correct, I just tried to reproduce it on a different 21.04
system and it passes without a hitch as well.

People in the upstream bug report to have seen similar behaviour as
well, where it magically works in the weekend but not during the week.

[Bug 1943833] [NEW] Failed to update metadata for lvfs

2021-09-16 Thread Forage
Public bug reported:

When running `fwupdmgr refresh` from the command line or when performing
an update from the Software application the following error will be
thrown:

Failed to update metadata for lvfs: checksum failure: failed to verify
data, expected 98261db7124c8026fb88f77768787efc2f8355c3

The cause is an outdated libjcat, as explained in the upstream bug
report:
https://github.com/fwupd/fwupd/issues/3652#issuecomment-912677175

0.1.3 is included in Ubuntu but at least 0.1.4 of libjcat is required to
function properly.

Firmware can not be updated any longer as a result unless forcing the
update manually by performing `fwupdmgr refresh --force`.

This means the libjcat dependency of this package needs to be set to
0.1.4 minimum and the libjcat package itself needs to be updated.

parameter. After installing those packages and a reboot the Last.fm

[Bug 1799545] Re: System shutdown/reboot when starting a game since Ubuntu 18.10

2018-10-26 Thread Forage
I replaced the PSU to rule out the possibility of a broken PSU just in
case, hence the delay. While it was a risk, I needed an excuse you buy a
quieter one anyway. And guess what? No more crash. While I find it
difficult to believe that a software update uncovers an issue with the
PSU, I suppose I just have to accept that it was slowly dying.

[Bug 1799545] [NEW] System shutdown/reboot when starting a game since Ubuntu 18.10

2018-10-23 Thread Forage
Public bug reported:

Ever since I updated from 18.04 to 18.10, I'm no longer able to play a
game like Heroes of Newerth. As soon as the game start after the picking
phase, my system completely shuts off/reboots. Testing with a game like
Warsow gives me the same result.

In about 50% of the crashes it is just turning the system off completely. In
the other 50% it reboots the system and it's the BIOS telling me about a
probable power issue and anti-surge protection was triggered.
I disabled the systems anti-surge protection in the BIOS as a test. No change
again, the system just turns off.
The PSU should be fine though, as all was running smooth in Ubuntu 18.04.

All was fine on 18.04 with the default open source drivers in
combination with my AMD RX480 card.

Lowering every graphic setting (resolution, anti-aliasing, etc.) in the
game to a minimum does not help in any way.

Due to it being a complete crash, I don't quite know where to report what since
I have no error nor log messages to go on.
Nothing of any use (recent or related to the crash) is available in /var/crash.

As an additional test I tried a Wayland session instead of the Xorg
session I normally use. The result is the same, a hard crash of the
system.

I can confirm that the dictionaries are back again, using the Hunspell

The search engines did not come back again either.

I believe that Firefox is using the Hunspell system libraries for the
dictionaries, so there should not be a need to install the individual
dictionary add-ons separately.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

[Bug 1791789] Re: FF62 upgrade : search engines override, french dictionnary and language pack lost.

2018-09-11 Thread Forage
It is not limited to just French dictionaries.
All additional dictionaries I had (English (GB), Dutch (NL) and French) are no
longer present after the update, just English (US) remains.

Reinstalling the Hunspell libraries did not solve the issue.

I do not see the same behaviour with the language packs though, they are
still there and have been updated nicely.

Search engines do not come back either, only once after the update.
Could it be that this happened to you because you manually (re)installed
the language pack?

[Bug 1774957] [NEW] Network icons in status menu disappearing

2018-06-04 Thread Forage
Public bug reported:

Ever since the update to Ubuntu 18.04 I'm having issues with the status
menu at the top right of the screen.

Normally you'd have a wired network connection icon displayed at the top
without opening the menu. In my case it is not displayed half of the time. In
the menu list no icon nor label is displayed for the wired connection menu item.
When talking about half of the time it means that I can randomly make it
display again when removing the USB network adapter and reconnecting it e.g.
This does not work reliably though.

When connecting to a VPN, normally you'd get an additional icon at the
top. This is not the case any more, nor does the switch behind an
activated VPN turns change to an active state. The result is that you
can activate a VPN using the switch, but you can verify that it is
activated, nor can you de-active the VPN through the menu. This does
change in settings though.

Wireless settings are no longer displayed in the menu at all. So no way
to activate it or connect to a specific network.

I tried reconfiguring (dpkg-reconfigure) gnome-shell as well as network-
manager-gnome, to no avail.

Attached you'll find a screenshot illustrating the issue. You'll see two
icons missing to the left of the volume icon, as well as the wireless
menu missing completely and no icon and text label for the wired
connection menu item.

[Bug 1644786] [NEW] Update to 1.3-1ubuntu1 causes inverted laptop screen

2016-11-25 Thread Forage
Public bug reported:

Since the update from iio-sensor-proxy 1.3-1 to 1.3-1ubuntu1, my laptop screen
is inverted, with the screen upside down and the mouse pointer movement
mirrored. My laptop has no option to rotate the screen though.
A rotation lock button is also added to the bottom of the main menu at the top
left, between the settings and session lock button.

Downgrading the package solves the issue again.

Let me know if you need any more information.

[Bug 1575718] [NEW] Input fields with no border or too small

2016-04-27 Thread Forage
Public bug reported:

Since the update of Firefox from 45 to 46 today, input fields are
rendered differently and with issues.

Checkboxes, radio buttons and the range input tag have no borders. Text
input tags are rather low in height.

See the following page for examples:
http://webdesign.about.com/od/examples/l/bl_input-tag-examples.htm

The height issue is clearly illustrated with the number input tag example,
where the up and down arrows are now rendered over the border.
In case of the tags without border: they are now invisible if not selected.

Attached you'll find a screenshot illustrating the different issues.

The issue occurs with the default Firefox theme, as well as the GNOME
Firefox theme.

2015-04-28 Thread Forage
It would be more helpful to test and post experiences about the packages in the
proposed repository than to ask about ETA's or to tell people to hurry up.
It's in the proposed repositories for a reason. This problem already got
introduced, probably due to the lack of sufficient testing. The proposed
packages are there for real word testing to help prevent other (new) issues
from occurring that might affect even more people or result in bigger problems.
The more confirmations are provided the faster it can be released for everyone.

2015-03-03 Thread Forage
By running sudo apt-get install libcheese* you are basically reverting the
mesa updates of 14.0.4.2. It'll remove all the new packages and give you the
graphic stack compared to before installing the LTS enabled stack. Hence you
can install fglrx again.
You'll still have the new Utopic kernel though. I'm not sure if that's a good
or bad thing. I can imagine some incompatibility issues without the new mesa
stack, but if it works for you for the time being...

[Bug 1424491] Re: apt-get fails to install fglrx or fglrx-updates in 14.04.2 and 12.04.5

2015-03-02 Thread Forage
I sure how he didn't go through all this trouble for 14.10.
No such trickery is needed for 14.10 because there's no LTS enablement stack
for 14.10. fglrx, from the Ubuntu repositories as well as the AMD website will
install just fine the normal way.

[Bug 1424491] Re: apt-get fails to install fglrx or fglrx-updates in 14.04.2 and 12.04.5

2015-02-24 Thread Forage
@Otus: I'm surprised to hear you managed to not get the fglrx packages removed
when installing the LTS enablement stack.
In my case I had 14.04 and fglrx-updates (but the same happened with fglrx)
installed. When I tried to start using the LTS enablement stack by installing
the packages, apt-get had to remove fglrx first.

Just a heads up for everyone: DO NOT attempt to build the driver
packages yourself with the drivers from the AMD website after you
installed the LTS enablement stack packages. The package building
process will attempt to automatically fix it's required dependencies,
removing a load of packages WITHOUT warning, leaving you with a broken
system.

[Bug 1409436] Re: Networks list not populated in Sharing settings

2015-01-12 Thread Forage
I'm sorry to hear that. I was hoping for a solution or work-around for
14.10 because the complete sharing section is now unusable, but I guess
that's the risk of going for a staging GNOME release :-/

For those running into the same problems: at least for Rygel (media
sharing) you can enable it manually by installing and using rygel-
preferences. Without additional trickery you'll have to do it after each
reboot though.

The same issue occurs with the AMD catalyst drivers, so it's not related to
just NVIDIA. I'm using Catalyst 14.12.

The issue appears to be fixed now. I didn't apply any work-arounds and
the shares get auto-mounted again.

Possibly because of the recent nfs-common 1:1.2.8-9ubuntu1 or the linux

[Bug 1308295] Re: synaptic crashes after installing updates

2014-04-26 Thread Forage
I can confirm the issue. While I haven't experienced it in 13.10, it
started for me after updating to 14.04. Using Ubuntu GNOME with GNOME
3.12.

It can take ages for Synaptic to launch, populate lists and search. When
Synaptic is in this state, it will crash right after having installed a
package, not showing the progress dialog in the first place and not
adding the changes to its history list.

Do note that it does not always occur. The only way I found to fix it
was to reboot the system, followed by another reboot if the first didn't
fix it.

I have a _usr_sbin_synaptic.0.crash file, but it is taking up 56 MB.
After compressing it still takes up 41 MB. Let me know if you need the
complete file.

[Bug 1289977] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 Update breaks grub, resulting in error: symbol 'grub_term_highlight_color' not found

2014-04-19 Thread Forage
Same thing occurred when I tried to upgrade ubuntu gnome from 13.10 to
14.04. I've got a dual boot system for year now and it was never
considered incorrectly configured in the past, installing and upgrading
Ubuntu always worked. I think this bug can't be considered invalid
because we have supposedly done something wrong manually. This is not
the case if you ask me.

Running boot-repair on a live usb fixed the issue for me, following the
provided steps: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair

[Bug 1242719] [NEW] Other Software source properties not properly set

2013-10-21 Thread Forage
Public bug reported:

Since Ubuntu 13.10 (complete clean install or upgrade from 13.04),
software sources aren't properly added through the GUI. Part of the URI
is placed in the distribution section and the value of what should be
placed in the distribution section is added to the components section.
The result is errors when updating the software sources.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Open Software Updates
2) Go to the Other Software tab
3) Add a new source like a PPA. Example: ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3-staging
4) Click on Edit... for the new created source

Result:
URI: http://ppa.launchpad.net/gnome3-team/gnome3-staging
Distribution: /ubuntu
Components: saucy main

Expected result:
URI: http://ppa.launchpad.net/gnome3-team/gnome3-staging/ubuntu
Distribution: saucy
Components: main

Changing it manually will give you key errors on update afterwards.

Using sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3-staging in a
terminal works as expected.

I'm running Ubuntu GNOME 13.10, should that makes any difference.

[Bug 1149506] Re: telepathy-idle hogs ~25% cpu

2013-06-05 Thread Forage
A temporary workaround is downgrading to 0.1.12.

You can download it from https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/telepathy-idle.
Choose one of the two, depending on your architecture:
-
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archive/primary/+files/telepathy-idle_0.1.12-1ubuntu0.1_amd64.deb
-
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archive/primary/+files/telepathy-idle_0.1.12-1ubuntu0.1_i386.deb

Run the following one by one after downloading on of the above:

sudo apt-get remove telepathy-idle
sudo dpkg -i telepathy-idle_0.1.12-1ubuntu0.1*.deb
sudo apt-get install account-plugin-irc

Run the following to prevent being nagged by updating to 0.1.14 again:

sudo apt-mark hold telepathy-idle

[Bug 1180785] [NEW] Empty account details/options, no input fields displayed

2013-05-16 Thread Forage
Public bug reported:

Ever since the upgrade from 12.10 to 13.04 no account settings can be
provided/altered for existing accounts in the UOA section of the System
Settings. Only the Cancel and Done buttons are displayed at the top-
right. There are no input fields displayed to actually provide any
account login details. The same goes for e.g. the Empathy Options
section of an account. This only appears to occur for existing accounts.
I can add a new one and provide the account details, but once added, no
input fields are displayed any more when I get back to the Edit Options
section.

This goes for all account types like Jabber, IRC, ICQ, Google, Facebook,
etc.

Attached you'll find a screenshot of the issue.

[Bug 1169640] Re: GDM fails to start after system crash

2013-04-28 Thread Forage
Found and solved the issue.

/var/log/upstart/gdm.log.1.gz contained the log entries:

/proc/self/fd/9: 31: /etc/profile: [[: not found

/etc/profile ended with the invalid line:

[[ -f /etc/autopackage/paths-bash ]] . /etc/autopackage/paths-
bash

I.e. it was caused by installing autopackage.

2012-06-15 Thread Forage
The set Wait for vertical refresh to On, unless application
specifies workaround does not fix the issue when running gnome-shell.
Compiz is not being used when using gnome-shell. Therefore I expect
there will be no point in installing ccsm to try the alternative
workaround. Is this assumption correct?

If yes, would there be anything else worth trying?

[Bug 880227] Re: eog fails to start with: GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **: Timeout was reached

2012-02-20 Thread Forage
I'm giving up on reporting issues in Launchpad of packages included by
Ubuntu. There's simply no point in doing so.

Like many issues, this one had a fix for a long time now and not a
single attempt has been made to get it fixed in the current Ubuntu
release. We should all just wait for half a year to get an insignificant
code change to fix a highly annoying bug, after which we get presented
with the next set of small but highly annoying bugs for yet another half
a year.

Why provide a bug reporting facility if the end result is people leaving
with the feeling to sod off and deal with it?

The amount of PPA's says enough: one can not depend on Ubuntu to get
things done, you'd have to do it yourself.

Ronan, yours is a different issue I believe. As far as I can tell you
are talking about Unity, not GNOME-Shell. Also, all other protocols,
including xmpp, work fine here. The issue with IRC is different because
normally many normal messages can be received through IRC without a
need for a notification. A notification should only be raised if one of
the received messages is specifically addressed to me by e.g. including
my name.

It would be better to file a different bug report in your case.

[Bug 884808] [NEW] Nautilus is causing a constant flow of GLib-GObject-CRITICAL assertion errors

2011-11-01 Thread Forage
Public bug reported:

When Nautilus is open, a constant flow of identical errors are being added to
~/.xsession-errors.
The following error is added every second, constantly, for the period Nautilus
is open:

(nautilus:3088): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_value_get_object: assertion
`G_VALUE_HOLDS_OBJECT (value)' failed

By default the (nautilus:3088): prefix is not added to the log. This
is the result of setting G_MESSAGES_PREFIXED=all as an environment
variable.

Besides the fact that it renders the .xsession-error file useless, it is
quite embarrassing that such an error has been overlooked.

To my knowledge only Tracker added additional Nautilus integration.

Let me know if you need any more information.

[Bug 884808] Re: Nautilus is causing a constant flow of GLib-GObject-CRITICAL assertion errors

2011-11-01 Thread Forage
Note that you don't specifically have to open the file. Opening Nautilus
in general is sufficient. If you have the status bar enabled you can
even just select the file and see its file size continue to increase.

[Bug 881978] Re: Unable to access Accounts preferences

2011-10-27 Thread Forage
You seriously want me to make a screencast of the process? :-S
Ow well...

Attached you'll find a video of the steps to reproduce.
I started recording right after logging in after a clean reboot.
Some accounts in Empathy are disabled, as you can see in the accounts dialog,
to speed up the recoding process.
The link on my desktop is a link to the file ~/.xsession-errors.

Let me know if you need any more info.

[Bug 881978] [NEW] Unable to access Accounts preferences

2011-10-26 Thread Forage
Public bug reported:

Quite often I'm unable to access the Accounts preferences. If I click on
Edit - Accounts no window will show up, nor do I get an error.

The file ~/.xsession-errors will contain the following errors for each
attempt:

GLib-GObject-WARNING **: instance with invalid (NULL) class pointer
GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_signal_connect_data: assertion
`G_TYPE_CHECK_INSTANCE (instance)' failed
GLib-GObject-WARNING **: invalid unclassed pointer in cast to `GtkWindow'
Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_window_present_with_time: assertion `GTK_IS_WINDOW
(window)' failed

I can't reproduce it 100%, but it usually starts to occur when a
connection error occurred for one of the accounts and this has been
reported in the contact list accordingly.
