[Bug 1912773] Re: [MS-7C52, ATI R6xx HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all, second display not working, cpu/agpu performance dropped considerably

2022-02-25 Thread Hassan Williamson
This issue still exists, when trying to figure out why bug #1962308 was
happening, this exact same problem still happens on 5.8.0-63 (originally
reported on 5.8.0-40).

[Bug 1962310] [NEW] ubuntu-bug has python errors that show up in the terminal

2022-02-25 Thread Hassan Williamson
Public bug reported:

Error displayed in the terminal is:

The application does run, after a while I also get the following
messages:

[Bug 1962308] [NEW] Video captures (e.g. webcam, capture card) are being displayed as "Video Capture 3"

2022-02-25 Thread Hassan Williamson
Public bug reported:

This issue seems to have been introduced in 5.13 somewhere, I only had
5.13.0-30 and 5.13.0-28 available in grub on the 5.13 branch to test
against, but in both instances all capture devices are labelled as
"Video Capture 3" where previously it would show the device's actual
name. I do still have 5.8 branch and 5.4 branch, and when testing
against 5.8.0-63 it showed the names correctly everywhere, and likewise
with 5.4.0-64.

The number at the end seems to be the number of devices, even though it
is getting the counted digit and repeating it for all of them.

If I run:

$ v4l2-ctl --list-devices

I get:

Video Capture 3 (usb-:08:00.3-3):
/dev/video2
/dev/video3
/dev/media1

Video Capture 3 (usb-:08:00.3-4):
/dev/video4
/dev/video5
/dev/media2

Video Capture 3 (usb-:08:00.4-1):
/dev/video0
/dev/video1
/dev/media0

The devices I have (from lsusb) are:

Bus 003 Device 004: ID 534d:2109 MACROSILICON
Bus 003 Device 003: ID 298f:1996 MACROSILICON ShadowCast
Bus 005 Device 002: ID 0458:6006 KYE Systems Corp. (Mouse Systems) AUKEY
PC-LM1E Camera

Previously the devices would be labelled as:

MACROSILICON
MACROSILICON ShadowCast
AUKEY PC-LM1E Camera

There appears to be a mismatch in the usb bus numbers too. You'll notice
in v4l2-ctl 2 of them are correctly identified as Bus 003 and Device 003
andd 004 respectively (outlined as 00.3-3 and 00.3-4), however the last
device shows 00.4-1 but in lsusb this is received as Bus 005 Device 002
- so it should be 00.5-2 if I'm right in the naming conventions that
should be used.

3) What you expected to happen

The labels of the USB devices to show up correctly in Zoom, OBS,
Microsoft Teams, Skype, Cheese, etc so that I can identify which device
to use.

4) What happened instead

The labels are wrong and given a generic "Video Camera 3" label for all
of them - where 3 is the number of devices I have connected.

[Bug 1912773] Re: [MS-7C52, ATI R6xx HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all, second display not working, cpu/agpu performance dropped considerably

2021-01-23 Thread Hassan Williamson
Fixed it! However I'm not sure why the file was created when I'm running
on AMD hardware and requiring the use of the APU.

The bug is that a blacklist file was created in:

/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-amdgpu.conf

With the following line:

blacklist amdgpu

That obviously prevented the APU drivers to load up, so the HDMI audio
sink could be initialised and prevented GPU rendering.

This problem could likely affect multiple people and are unaware if they
are on a single display and using speakers connected to the motherboard
instead of via other means such as the 3.5mm output, optical, or even
via Bluetooth. Since the system worked otherwise. The only symptom
people on single displays and not using HDMI audio people would
experience is when doing anything CPU or GPU intensive, since I can only
presume the CPU is doing all the legwork to render the display instead
of the APU.

For reference the CPU is a AMD Ryzen 5 3400g with Vega 11 APU, and no
dedicated graphics card.

If anyone needs any additional information, logs, or anything let me
know and I'll be happy to help out where I can. I'm just glad that I got
this resolved, but I'd hate for others to experience the same issues
while updates trickle down (it could also be months before anyone
notices on single display and no HDMI audio setups).

Use 'sudo apt autoremove' to remove them.
0 to upgrade, 0 to newly install, 0 to remove and 1 not to upgrade.

I've also tried installing it for all the others:

2021-01-22 Thread Hassan Williamson
I've done more digging and I think the regressing happened sooner, but I
only rebooted it on the day I noticed it wasn't working. I decided to
see when the system was actually last rebooted by using:

$ last reboot | less

reboot system boot 5.8.0-40-generic Fri Jan 22 11:44 still running
reboot   system boot  5.8.0-40-generic Fri Jan 22 10:15 - 11:44  (01:28)

reboot   system boot  5.8.0-40-generic Fri Jan 22 10:03 - 10:14  (00:11)
reboot   system boot  5.8.0-40-generic Fri Jan 22 08:23 - 10:02  (01:39)
reboot   system boot  5.8.0-40-generic Fri Jan 22 08:10 - 08:23  (00:13)
reboot   system boot  5.4.0-64-generic Fri Jan 22 08:06 - 08:09  (00:03)
reboot   system boot  5.8.0-36-generic Fri Jan 22 07:59 - 08:05  (00:06)
reboot   system boot  5.8.0-38-generic Fri Jan 22 07:53 - 07:58  (00:05)
reboot   system boot  5.8.0-40-generic Fri Jan 22 07:45 - 07:52  (00:07)
reboot   system boot  5.8.0-40-generic Fri Jan 22 07:39 - 07:40  (00:00)
reboot   system boot  5.8.0-40-generic Fri Jan 22 07:35 - 07:38  (00:03)
reboot   system boot  5.8.0-36-generic Sun Jan 10 03:43 - 07:34 (12+03:51)
reboot   system boot  5.4.0-58-generic Mon Jan  4 10:00 - 03:42 (5+17:42)

You'll see everything was fine on the 10 Jan 2021 and 4 Jan 2021. That
means the regression happened on or after these dates. I've rerun the
awk command to see what packages were changed in that time and I have:

$ awk 'BEGIN{ start="0" } { if($0 ~ /Log started: 2021-01-05/) {
start="1"} if ( start == "1" && $0 ~ /Unpacking.*over/) {gsub(/[\s\t)(

[Bug 1912773] Re: [MS-7C52, ATI R6xx HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all, second display not working, cpu/agpu performance dropped considerably

2021-01-22 Thread Hassan Williamson
Forgot to mention in the original post, but trying to revert all updates
that caused the problem (as per the versions listed above) but that
didn't work because they no longer exist in the repo (and the system had
already cleared the cache). So I always get the error that the

[Bug 1912773] [NEW] [MS-7C52, ATI R6xx HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all, second display not working, cpu/agpu performance dropped considerably

2021-01-22 Thread Hassan Williamson
Public bug reported:

After a recent update, I now have a system that can no longer play audio
(via HDMI), my second monitor (DVI) is no longer being picked up, and
CPU/AGPU usage has lost a lot of performance (OBS is basically unusable
at this point).

Whatever has happened with the recent updates has caused the AMD drivers
(presumably?) to not work correctly - because it is an AMD Ryzen 5 3400g
(with no dedicated graphics card).

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System
-> About Ubuntu

```
$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS
Release:20.04
```

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy
pkgname' or by checking in Software Center

Not sure which package would be the cause, however these were the
version that were working prior to the update:

```
3) What you expected to happen
Sound and video working via HDMI on primary monitor, second monitor
displaying (extended) video via DVI. CPU and AGPU being able to render
via OBS.
4) What happened instead
No sound. No second display. Any CPU or AGPU tasks running slower than
normal.
[Bug 1768543] Re: Window previews are not horizontally centered in their context menus
2020-07-07 Thread Hassan Williamson
I'm running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS / 20.04.1 with the default theme and having
the same issue, except my issue is more squashed to the left. I uploaded
a screenshot to the bug I filed that was marked as a duplicate here: bug
#1886268
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/487131442/Screenshot%20from%202020-07-04%2014-54-32.png
People are discussing the issue on Stack Exchange here:
https://askubuntu.com/q/1183065/10857 with the following answer fixing
the issue for most people: https://askubuntu.com/a/1232740/10857.
I've also added my screenshot to the dash-to-dock github.
Is there no way to patch this in the user styles? Or is the issue due to
the fact that some elements are being removed from the DOM?
[Bug 1886268] [NEW] Window preview isn't centred, it is left aligned and looks wrong
2020-07-04 Thread Hassan Williamson
Public bug reported:
There is an issue on Ubuntu 20.04 / 20.04.1 where the ubuntu dock
extension for gnome is misaligning the preview window - it should be
centred based on what I've seen online. This was a fresh install of
Ubuntu 20.04 close to or just after release.
People are discussing the issue on Stack Exchange here:
https://askubuntu.com/q/1183065/10857 with the following answer fixing
the issue for most people: https://askubuntu.com/a/1232740/10857.
The problem with that fix is that people shouldn't have to do that - it
should already be baked in, so I'm making it aware here so someone can
apply this fix if possible since you'll know better if this will break
other things or not.
1) $ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 20.04 LTS
Release:20.04
2) $ apt-cache policy gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock
gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock:
  Installed: 68ubuntu1~20.04.1
  Candidate: 68ubuntu1~20.04.1
3) Expended the window to be centred in the preview.
4) Preview is left-aligned and looks out of place. See screenshot
originally posted in Stack Exchange: https://i.stack.imgur.com/dlDhJ.png
(I've also uploaded a screenshot from my own system below).
[Bug 1852210] Re: problem importing gpg keys "Fatal: can't create directory '/home/hazrpg/~/.gnupg': No such file or directory
2019-11-12 Thread Hassan Williamson
Further information...
Putting all the files into .gnupg folder didn't work even after a reboot
(even though it was a direct backup of this directory).
However, when I then tried to generate a new one in the terminal using
the following:
gpg --gen-key
And following the steps there, it created a key successfully AND when
opening seahorse again... the old key was discovered too!
I've attached a screenshot of this too - the highlighted one is the new
one and I've censored the email address from the new one because I don't
want it being public.
[Bug 1852210] Re: problem importing gpg keys "Fatal: can't create directory '/home/hazrpg/~/.gnupg': No such file or directory
2019-11-12 Thread Hassan Williamson
Interesting, a PGP key can't be created either. I'll attach what happens
when I try to.
Steps to reproduce:
1) Open seahorse.
2) Click on GnuPG keys.
3) Click on the + sign.
4) Select PGP key and click on continue.
5) Type in a Full Name and E-mail address.
6) Click Create.
7) Enter in a passphrase to protect the key.
8) Error message says "Couldn't generate PGP key" in the title, "No agent
running" in the body and a "Close" button is displayed.
[Bug 1852210] [NEW] problem importing gpg keys "Fatal: can't create directory '/home/hazrpg/~/.gnupg': No such file or directory
2019-11-12 Thread Hassan Williamson
Public bug reported:
There is a problem when importing a GPG private key from a backup, the
error message says the File or Directory does not exist - and it looks
like its because of the way it's trying to access it.
Here's the exact error (verbose as its displayed):
Import failed: Fatal: can't create directory '/home/hazrpg/~/.gnupg': No
such file or directory
It looks like its trying to access ~/.gnupg and at the same time trying
to put that in the /home/hazrpg/ directory (hazrpg being my username).
It should be one or the other, so its probably a simple fix.
Steps to reproduce:
1) Open up seahorse.
2) Click on "File" -> "Import...".
3) Select any valid GPG key file (public, private, etc).
4) Verify its valid with the "Data to be imported:" section and then click on
"Import".
5) Error message shows in red below the "Data to be imported:" section with the
above message.
[Bug 1721909] Re: Goodix GF3208 (fingerprint reader) not being recognised by kernel/system
Wow, lots of different devices have started shipping the same
fingerprint scanner since I first raised this issue.
Is there anything we can do in the community to help? Clearly there is a
need for this to be included.
2019-01-15 Thread Hassan Williamson
I got the same as above, except I'm coming from 16.04.5.
The other thing is I only upgrade from 16.04.5 because I couldn't
actually boot into it. See bug here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-signed-hwe/+bug/1800250
I had to upgrade using the debian-method because all normal Ubunutu
upgrade paths would not work for me - and although I'm not one to give
up a fight on fixing a bug, I had to because I need this system for
work.
linux-image-4.15.0-38-generic
only linux-image-4.15.0-34-generic seems to be bootable
Any thoughts or things I can do to fix it?
[Bug 1800250] [NEW] Latest kernel boots to (initramfs) console on Dell Inspirion 15 7577
2018-10-26 Thread Hassan Williamson
Public bug reported:
After getting the latest kernel update, the system keeps booting into a
console that says (initramfs), and no amount of any commands helps gets
past this.
Previous version kernel before it boots fine.
I'm willing to help figure out what's happened if someone is willing to
help guide me through it, I'm no stranger to compiling code or getting
debug information.
Thanks in advance.
[Bug 1689825] Re: gnome-keyring not unlocked on boot
2017-05-26 Thread Hassan Williamson
I was wondering if there is anything I can to help regress the issue?
Even if it is just trying to load various different older versions?
[Bug 1689825] Re: gnome-keyring not unlocked on boot
2017-05-25 Thread Hassan Williamson
Sorry, I should have been more constructive with my comment. The
workaround in #10 seems to partially work. It doesn't allow the "login"
password keychain to be unlocked on login, but it at least let you see
the passwords in seahorse so that it can be unlocked manually - which in
turn prevents applications from hanging.
I've recently started getting this issue too. What is going on?? Ubuntu
shouldn't be doing this on the LTS.
[Bug 887821] Re: "Show copy dialog" right click launcher entry doesn't work (on nautilus copy)
2017-03-13 Thread Hassan Williamson
This bug seems to still be present for me too - normally I'm not
copying/moving files that are large enough for me to care. However it is
home time at the office, I'm copying a large number of files onto an
external drive, and I can no longer see the copy dialogue... this is
frustrating because I don't know how long is left to be able to let my
wife know when I'll be home.
It seems to happen more once there is an external drive is plugged in -
for me at least - especially if I have nautilus tabbed. Hope this helps
to replicate the bug.
[Bug 1633852] Re: Blank screen on boot when using nvidia
2016-10-16 Thread Hassan Williamson
** Description changed:
  works fine.
  The baffling part is that I dual boot 2 Ubuntu installs... And the other
[Bug 1587699] [NEW] Screen blank/black after splash screen
2016-05-31 Thread Hassan Williamson
Public bug reported:
It seems whenever I try to run `prime-select nvidia` I get a blank
screen after the splash screen. When I am running under `prime-select
intel` - I have no problems.
I triple boot, two of them being Ubuntu (one for testing one for every
day use), and the problem seems to lie only on the every day use one.
Both have 16.04 (except the main one got upgraded from 14.04, and the
testing one from 15.10). Both have the same version of nvidia
(`nvidia-361`). Both seem to have the same configuration. Yet the one I
want it to work on does not work.
I am more than happy to provide any logs needed of both installs to help
diagnose. From what I have seen so far, /etc/X11/xorg.conf are identical
on both.
1)
$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
Release:16.04
2)
$ apt-cache policy xorg
xorg:
  Installed: 1:7.7+13ubuntu3
  Candidate: 1:7.7+13ubuntu3
  Version table:
 *** 1:7.7+13ubuntu3 500
$ apt-cache policy nvidia-361
  Version table:
 *** 361.42-0ubuntu2 500
500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial/restricted amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
3) I expected to be able to see the lightdm screen after running in
nvidia mode (prime-select nvidia).
4) I see nothing on the screen, but I hear the Ubuntu boot sound
notifying me that the login screen is there. Also, if I type my password
in I can hear my hard drive spin up and the LED blink - telling me that
clearly something is happening.
[Bug 1532318] Re: alt-tab only show desktop
2016-05-17 Thread Hassan Williamson
I can also confirm the workaround fix mention by post Valentin Quequet
on post #7 that logging out and logging back in fixes this bug - but
when you start from a clean boot, the menu items and ALT-TAB bar do not
track the applications you have open. I am willing to help diagnose the
cause/provide any logs needed to help replicate.
2016-05-14 Thread Hassan Williamson
I agree with Aimo, since this seems to be such a simple bug to fix, it
doesn't make sense that this hasn't been added to the current LTS 16.04
- it was reported around 3 years ago! Is this something that has been
pulled from Debian, if so should we be reporting it to them?
[Bug 1082411] [NEW] brasero can not eject medium and process is still running
2012-11-23 Thread Hassan Williamson
Public bug reported:
There appears to be a bug where-by brasero is unable to eject when it
finishes burning. So I do as it says, and eject manually. I then proceed
to click finish. However, I attempted to burn something else, and
brasero wouldn't open at all. Using the command `htop` (or `top`), I see
that brasero is still running in the background. I have to kill the
process to be able to continue running another process.
Please note: I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 amd64.
[Bug 1082411] Re: brasero can not eject medium and process is still running
2012-11-23 Thread Hassan Williamson
Just burned another CD, this time from the terminal and using the debug
option. Thought this might help a bit.
Also the CD/DVD drive I have (as reported by `hwinfo`) is: TSSTcorp
CDDVDW SN-208AB
Command used:
$ brasero ubuntu-12.04.1-desktop-i386.iso -g  brasero-debug.log
Log has been attached. Also note, I had to terminate the command with
CTRL+C since it was still running.
[Bug 964856] [NEW] genius eye 312 webcam does not display anything
2012-03-25 Thread Hassan Williamson
Public bug reported:
I bought a webcam recently, but no matter what software I try to use it
doesn't seem to work. When trying the webcam terminal command I get
the following:
reading config file: /home/heidi/.webcamrc
video4linux webcam v1.5 - (c) 1998-2002 Gerd Knorr
grabber config:
  size 320x240 [none]
  input (null), norm (null), jpeg quality 75
  rotate=0, top=0, left=0, bottom=240, right=320
Webcam lights up, showing activity... looks as if it is working... but
no image(s)/video. Tried using skype, pidgin, cheese and other
applications and the webcam doesn't seem to be working at all (other
applications don't display the light on the webcam). The internal mic
works fine however.
lsusb shows the following for the webcam:
Bus 003 Device 003: ID 093a:2622 Pixart Imaging, Inc.
The actual webcam is a Genius Eye 312 however.
Just ask if you need any more information.
[Bug 907284] [NEW] [Realtek ALC892] pactl stat failed to find default card
2011-12-21 Thread Hassan Williamson
Public bug reported:
I have no sound at all.
Doing the following makes sound work... however I have no control over
the sound volumes per applications (except the overall sound using
alsamixer - which is a pain):
killall pulseaudio
pulseaudio --kill
alsa force-reload
After doing those, sound works! So clearly there isn't any issues with
alsa, problem seems to exist in pulseaudio somehow... yet it was working
perfectly fine a few months ago. I recently downgraded to
1:0.9.22~0.9.21+stable-queue-32-g8478-0ubuntu21 because I thought
1:0.9.22~0.9.21+stable-queue-32-g8478-0ubuntu21.1 was what caused the
issues... but still no joy. Any ideas?
Is there a way to be able to revert settings somehow (without having to
reinstall the whole O/S)?
Just did an update of my natty install. I can confirm, this bug is still
reproducible on natty. This should not be closed, because as Alistair
mentioned a user can lose unsaved data. I know, because my sister is the
one that mainly uses the natty machine and she's already lost unsaved
data at least 4 times since this bug was filled.
[Bug 835568] [NEW] Creative ZEN Style 300 is not being recognised
2011-08-27 Thread Hassan Williamson
Public bug reported:
I'm having have an issue using the Creative ZEN Style 300, it shows up
as being a mass storage device... however in any music management
application (e.g. banshee) it won't let me put music onto it (it's not
even picking it up at all).
I've tried adding in an mpi file to /usr/share/media-player-info
/creative_zen-style-300.mpi but with no joy. I'm guessing this needs to
be fixed through some other means.
The mpi I created has the following:
[Device]
Product=Zen Style 300
Vendor=Creative
AccessProtocol=storage
DeviceMatch=usb:041e:2016;
[Media]
InputFormats=audio/x-wav
OutputFormats=audio/mpeg;audio/x-ms-wma;audio/audible;audio/x-wav
[storage]
AudioFolders=Music/
FolderDepth=2
I believe this to be correct. I got the DeviceMatch id from lsusb, so I
know for sure this is correct.
[Bug 826059] Re: unity gets stuck in 'expose' mode when you drag an icon over a launcher icon and hold it there
2011-08-14 Thread Hassan Williamson
IIRC, Oneiric Ocelot (11.10) has just disabled  Drag  Drop for the
unity bar... this does not mean that its been fixed, it just means that
the bug won't happen because it was disabled.
Surely being able to Drag  Drop things into application icons should
allow you to open them up with that application, this is a feature I'm
sure many have gotten use to with any operating system. Alternatively,
it should allow the application to bring focus to itself to allow you to
drag to that application.
2011-08-13 Thread Hassan Williamson
I can confirm this bug affects me too using the steps outlined above.
Just as a side note, I can also confirm that this bug also happens with
several other icons too, for example dragging a song file to MusicBrainz
Picard, trying to drag text to a terminal, etc.
[Bug 778896] [NEW] Epson DX-5050 setfacl not working properly for saned
2011-05-07 Thread Hassan Williamson
Public bug reported:
Description:Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS (ubuntu-server)
Release:10.04
libsane Installed: 1.0.20-13ubuntu2
What you expected to happen:
To be able to use saned to share my scanner Epson DX-5050.
What happened instead:
When I tried to do scanimage -L as user saned it refused to find my
scanner. However running sudo scanimage -L it picked it up just fine.
It seems setfacl isn't being done properly using the rules found
/lib/udev/rules.d/40libsane.rules, despite my scanner already being in
there by default.
What I have done to fix this:
First I had to create a group called scanner and made saned a member of it,
then created my own rule /etc/udev/rules.d/99hazrpg.rules, copying the
relevant parts for my scanner and adding: GROUP=scanner. This solved the
problem. I have attached a copy of my rules file.
