[Bug 907109] [NEW] qt creator package doesn't depend on a c++ compiler

2011-12-20 Thread Michael Stather
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 11.10, when installing qt creator through the software center
or synaptic, it can't find a toolchain because a c++ compiler isn't
specified as a dependency, but of course needed. For me installing
build-essential fixes the problem.

[Bug 77010] Re: Overuse of system beep without volume control

2009-06-16 Thread Michael Stather
I would go so far as to say that we NEVER want to play the system beep
during the course of a normal graphical session; sometimes it is so
loud, users look as if they had received an electric shock

That was exactly my point, too ;) Which I wrote here 2 and a half years
ago. And which EVERY GOOD BETA TESTER notices immediately but nobody
cares.

[Bug 292442] Re: Firefox should have smooth scrolling enabled by default

2009-03-27 Thread Michael Stather
There are some problems with compositing enabled, but why not look at them?
Scrolling is ugly without smooth scrolling, which is both enabled in firefox
under windows and in IE *hint*

So IMHO don't make this invalid but open until the problems are
resolved.

Have you tried this?
Switch to manual proxy, change the 8080 entry in the port entry to 0, then
switch back to direct connection? This works for me.

AND FOR THE DEVS: I'M A SOFTWARE ENGINEER MYSELF AND HAVE WRITTEN
SEVERAL TIMES WHERE THE PROBLEM LIES!!! IF YOU WANT TO FIX THIS BUG AND
ARE NOT SURE HOW PLEASE CONTACT ME!

2008-11-24 Thread Michael Stather
This is not an ubuntu specific issue but a general GNOME one which also
happens with every other distro

Even if gnome defaults to direct connection there's still the 8080 in
the port field which is a BUG

but theres enough information given by me and others and nobody seems to
care :(

[Bug 294187] [NEW] Firefox Locales should install locale specific search plugins

2008-11-05 Thread Michael Stather

search engines like the english wikipedia, and not localised ones

There's much information about this in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mozilla-firefox-locale-all/+bug/52537

2008-11-01 Thread Michael Stather
Still the same with intrepid. I installed it and entered proxy settings in the
installer. They weren't transferred to the proxy configuration applet but only
port 8080. Seems something is definitely wrong here.
What about
1. Having nothing set as default value when not set during the installer (why
should there be a port number?)
2. Making sure when entering proxy settings in the installer, that these are
also set in the installed system

[Bug 78187] Re: Hitting the accent key causes system beep

2008-11-01 Thread Michael Stather
Still the case with intrepid :(
I don't intend to sound rude or something, I really like ubuntu, but why do the
developers don't see this bug by themselves?
I mean why does ubuntu use the system speaker which is so loud and ugly as a
notification? Every time I want to shutdown it beeps, when I press backspace in
an empty list box...and so on
It should play the selected warning or error sound through the sound card.
This thing has been there for ages, and IMHO is no wishlist-item :(

[Bug 292442] [NEW] Firefox should have smooth scrolling enabled by default

2008-11-01 Thread Michael Stather
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

This is perhaps not a real bug, but IMHO when installing ubuntu the smooth
scrolling should be enabled by default.
It's also the case on windows, and the default scrolling is rather ugly.
Smooth scrolling works even with the vesa driver so IMHO this won't be a
problem but a much better user experience.

2008-07-15 Thread Michael Stather
Yes, it does

Ubuntu (as well as other distros) still use the system speaker if something

Why isn't this changed? The system speaker sounds ugly, and people expect to
hear sound from the speakers connected through the sound card.

[Bug 187149] Re: [Hardy Feature Request] Add support for DM-RAID aka Dell DataSafe

2008-05-25 Thread Michael Stather
This also applies to all on-board RAID controllers found on nearly all current
mainboards (VIA RAID/Intel Matrix Strorage/NVRaid). Since this is what most
inexperienced users call RAID, and the fakeraid does work AFAIK on linux
already (KNOPPIX displays me a /dev/mapper/via... device and the individual
drives as /dev/sdx which is wrong but nevertheless...) it should be supported
out-of-the-box in ubuntu.
Especially when people have a working windows installation on the RAID, try to
install ubuntu using wubi and it just crashes on reboot.

[Bug 224422] [NEW] [Hardy] Proxy is disabled by default but port 8080 is selected

2008-04-29 Thread Michael Stather
Public bug reported:

If I install hards (this occurs also in previous ubuntu versions) the proxy (in
the settings menu) is disabled by default, of course, but there's a 8080 in
the port field of the http-proxy setting which should be 0 as in all other
fields.
This causes problems when enabling a proxy script. Applications which can't use
this but rely on the environment variables like the installer for the

2008-02-05 Thread Michael Stather
Public bug reported:

anymore. I can even eject the CD from the drive.
I've an ASUS M2N-X NForce5 Mainboard set to AHCI mode which works fine in
ubuntu up to gutsy and windows.
Other new distros (apart from gutsy) all fail after some errors about the SATA
link. Since I've an SATA DVD drive they all quit. Older kernels don't show this
problem, so there must have been some change which broke support for SATA on
this mainboard. Please tell me what I can also do to help fixing this problem.

[Bug 79339] Re: [Edgy] Forth mouse button isn't supported

2007-08-18 Thread Michael Stather
Yes it's no problem for experienced users but ubuntu should be easy to use for
newbies as well ;)
What I'd suggest would be a nice default configuration even if there's no
GUI. So the up and down buttons (which are mapped to button 4 and 5 in AFAIK
all mice) should toggle forward and back in all webbrowsers. This is (even if
this is not a good argument *g) also the way it works in windows.

[Bug 122788] [Kubuntu 7.04] Many characters are displayed wrong on the console

2007-06-28 Thread Michael Stather

I installed a german kubuntu 7.04. When I do a console login via gdm
or switch to one of the virtual consoles with CTRL+ALT+F2 for example,

something wrong with the locale setting ot UTF-8 support in the console.

This is still an issue even with feisty, when I install it and go to the

Also sometimes when I install new apps and revisit the language options

If you have a tablet PC it's always connected.
And IMHO the best solution would be plug'n play as the rest of linux does
with hotplug. Device adding/removal shold be detected and the config file
should be adjusted. This is also good for people who attach the tablet after
installing. Its not very good if the X config is detected one time and never

[Bug 68749] Re: Synaptic should honor the general proxy settings

2007-03-28 Thread Michael Stather
Thats of course useful if you don't use GNOME, IMHO it's just a litte
bit confusing because when I set it to direct connection it still uses
the proxy settings. Perhaps there should be an option use system
settings (which is selected by default) beside direct connection and

[Bug 85816] Re: Bootloader should be installed to the partition instead of the mbr

2007-03-26 Thread Michael Stather
So what's the bugtracker then for? I'd like to post this directly to the
devs, not to discuss this with thousands of users where everyone has its
own opinion. Sure, if the devs don't like the suggestion it's no problem
for me,but posting into the mailing list doesn't have any effect.

To summarize I can give you two arguments against installing into the
MBR:

1. Operating systems shouldn't touch the MBR, which usually just boots
the active partition. The OSes should have their initialisation in their
bootsectors. This is how all other OSes (including Windows) do it. This
has the advantage that installing a new operating system doesn't destroy
the initialisation code of the others. Windows for example just writes
the standard MBR on installing. If you have an ubuntu installation with
GRUB in the MBR you have to reinstall GRUB, if GRUB is in the bootsector
all you have to do is setting the linux partition as active.

2. It's difficult (at least for non-experienced users) to restore the
standard MBR, for example when deleting linux. With GRUB in the
bootsector the partition can be removed and all traces of the
bootmanager are also gone.

Apart from that it's completely the same for the users, so I can't
understand why ubuntu installs into the MBR by default.

[Bug 95898] [Edgy] USB stick re-connects on standby/resume

When I put the computer to standby and resume it later I often get the unsafe

[Bug 88372] Support automatic proxy detection with WPAD

2007-02-27 Thread Michael Stather
Public bug reported:

The proxy support (on Edgy) istn't really complete, since WPAD isn't supported.
It would be nice to have an automatic proxy detection option in the proxy
settings, which gets the proxy values with WPAD (e.g. by using
http://wpad/wpad.dat as the source) on every startup and set the gconf and
environment variables accordingly.
Another change would be that firefox uses these values instead of having its
own proxy detection (this is done e.g. in SuSE) by introducin a new option use
system proxy setting in firefox.
This would make the proxy support complete and fully transparent in networks
which support WPAD , so that the user doesn't have to set up anything proxy
related.

[Bug 88380] [Edgy] Proxy environment variables only set when proxy is entered manually

2007-02-27 Thread Michael Stather
Public bug reported:

When I manually enter the proxy details in the settings applet (e.g. the
http proxy address and port) the standard environment variabled (n
this case http_proxy) are set automatically which programs like wget
and instsaller packages like flashplayer_nonfree need. But when I
configure my proxy using a .pac file in this dialog, the variables
aren't set at all. GConf proxy settings are still applied so GNOME

[Bug 85816] Bootloader should be installed to the partition instead of the mbr

2007-02-17 Thread Michael Stather
Public bug reported:

Currently (at least on edgy) the bootloader (GRUB) is installed into the MBR of
the drive.
IMHO this has several disadvantages. If installing another OS (like Windows or
another Linux distro) the MBR often gets overwritten, and it's rather hard to
restore GRUB.
The best way IMHO would be to install GRUB into the boot sector of the root
partition, and setting this partition as active. This has the advantage that
the standard MBR can be used (which just boots the active partition) and also
it's easier to remove ubuntu (you just remove the partition and set another one
as active) and it's more compatible with other operating systems.

Public bug reported:

When I transmit data to an USB stick or USB harddrive the data is wriiten only
when I unmount it.
This is IMHO not very good, the data should be written instantly to the stick,
like e.g. Windows does it. Not only is this good when the user unplugs the

I know this isn't the best argument, but why not do the same as Windows does?
If the accent can't be placed (in international mode) it's written seperate.
There's the same for the ^ key, I've to hit it two times to get the char ^
which is annoying especially in instant messaging. And in this case the user is
definitely used to pressing it twice.

[Bug 81506] [Edgy] Clipboard loses content on application close

When I e.g. copy a text to the clipboard in firefox and then close firefox to
paste the text in thunderbird, the clipboard is always empty. I guess it's

[Bug 79261] Re: [Edgy] Printing with Epson C86 very slow

2007-01-21 Thread Michael Stather
The output is attached. When I switch to draft the speed is still much
slower than on windows. As I said the lines the printer prints in one
pass are smaller in their height, so the printer has to print more of
them. What could also be the case is that the printer prints bi-
directional so it prints from left to right and from right to left on
windows, but only uni-directional on linux. I'm not sure since I can't
see this.

[Bug 80730] [Edgy] Setting USB Headset as default device doesn't work

2007-01-20 Thread Michael Stather
Public bug reported:

I've both an integrated soundcard and an USB headset (with a C-Media audio
controller). It is detected and works but what I want to do (and is IMHO the
best solution) is to automatically disable the internal soundcard when the
headset is connected. This works e.g. on windows but if I plug the headset in
and select it as the default soundcard, the sound still comes from the internal
soundcard.
There should be a way (in future versions) to do this, either by having an
option that USB soundcards and headsets automatically get the default if
plugged in, or (like in windows) that I can set the USB headset one time as
default, and when it's plugged in it's used when not then the former default
card (the internal one) is chosen automatically.

[Bug 79271] Adding or deleting partitions or optical drives not supported

2007-01-14 Thread Michael Stather
Public bug reported:

On Edgy, when I add or delete a partition I've to update the fstab by hand.
This should IMHO be improved for future versions, so if a partition doesn't
exist any more (can't be found by its UUID) it's removed from the fstab, and if
a new partition is found an entry is added to the fstab.
This also applies to optical drives. Removable drives are managed by hotplug
and so it's not a problem here, just for partitions and optical drives.

[Bug 78208] Re: Session should be saved on logout

2007-01-11 Thread Michael Stather
It's common e.g. in KDE that the session is saved on logout (you can't
switch it off at all). Usually there are no apps open when you logout,
and it's IMHO a very intuitive thing that the apps that were open at
logout are present at login again.

There's another thing (which is a little bit more important). Many apps
such as gaim (or skype) rely on session management since it's common on
linux systems. I mean that e.g. gaim has no option to start minimized or
in tray. The developers say that gaim supports session management and
that's enough, so all the user has to do is to start it one-time. When
you restart the system gaim will keep the last status, window state,
position and so on.

[Bug 78687] Re: [Edgy] Default font in Firefox too big

2007-01-11 Thread Michael Stather
Of course :)
When I enter www.wetter.de there are rendering errors in the various boxes in
the upper part of the screen. The font is too big, so the contents don't fit
into one line (of the box) so they're wrapped and the whole contents of the box
don't fit the height of the box any more.
Hitting CTRL-- will change the font to a smaller value, so the font is fine.
The font size should be the same as in firefox under windows IMHO so that there
are no such errors any more.

[Bug 78854] [Edgy] Upgradability broken when removing one of the included apps

When I remove one of the core ubuntu apps (because I don't like it and I don't
want to have useless apps on my system) I remove the core ubuntu package which
leads to problems when upgrading. Further I can't remove those apps from the

[Bug 78687] [Edgy] Default font in Firefox too big

2007-01-10 Thread Michael Stather
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

The font which is set by default is very bug, and so there are problems with
several websites (such was www.n24.de and www.wetter.de) which immediately
disappear when I decrease the font size (so these are no firefox rendering
errors).
Another thing that I noticed, when I go to the font settings there's no font
selected in the appropriate field, so I guess firefox chooses an arbitrary one.
There should be a default font set.

As I understand the goal of ubuntu is making linux easy for users, so that they

What I miss in Edgy is an easy way to run a command as root withput using sudo
