[Bug 1516358] [NEW] Can't set language to Dutch (Belgium)

2015-11-15 Thread Peter De Maeyer
Public bug reported:

I want to set my language to "Dutch (Belgium)" but that just won't work. When I
go through the motions of the settings menu (All Settings -> Region & Language
-> Language), it lets me select the language, but in the end the language is
never applied.
- I could set the locale to "Belgium"
- I could set the keyboard to "Belgian" (which is an
- But not the language.

I _can_ however set the language to "Dutch (Netherlands)", which is
close but not good enough.

[Bug 1463673] [NEW] Wireshark's UI is unusable in Ubuntu 15.04 with Gnome3

2015-06-09 Thread Peter De Maeyer
Public bug reported:

Wireshark's UI doesn't work on Ubuntu 15.04 with Gnome3 and dual
monitor.

In previous Ubuntu versions, I had to apply the workaround 'export
LIBOVERLAY_SCROLLBAR=0' prior to starting wireshark to prevent it from
crashing.

In 15.04, this no longer has any effect. Wireshark immediately starts
fullscreen on the second monitor of my dual-screen setup without title
bar. So I can't drag it around. When I click on something, for example
to start a new capture, a window opens _behind_ the main window. I can
see the new window when ALT-TABbing, but I can never reach it because
the main window stays on top. The UI behavior is very erratic, and
generally unusable.

I just attached some files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/20140423-2025//
I believe the following is relevant info in main.log:

---

It concerns proprietary Brother drivers for my printer and scanner,
which I have installed according to the instructions on the Brother

that I had to 'force' the installation...

Can I still upgrade and just ignore these problems?

[Bug 1241142] Re: Could not calculate the upgrade

2014-04-18 Thread Peter De Maeyer
The error I get:

---
Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

 This can be caused by:
 * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
 * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
 * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the command
'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal.
---

I ran 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' as the message
suggested, and that is how I got to this existing bug. I was hoping the
collected information would automatically be attached to this bug, but
I'm not sure if that happened correctly.

[Bug 1053749] Re: UnicodeDecodeError from broken package descriptions

2013-03-16 Thread Peter De Maeyer
It seems the odd characters do in fact have a valid UTF-8 encoding, but
for some reason they have been encoded incorrectly. I was able to fix
them as follows:

cat /var/lib/dpkg/status | iconv -c -f utf-8 -t utf-8 /tmp/status.fixed
cat /var/lib/dpkg/available | iconv -c -f utf-8 -t utf-8 /tmp/available.fixed

Now you still have to replace the originals with the fixed copies. In my
case, there were about 100 offending packages:

hwdata (Noël Köthe - Noël Köthe)
shared-mime-info (Sebastian Dröge - Sebastian Dröge)
glines
...

I have the impression there is a structural root cause for this, it's
not just about a rare and obscure package with a rogue character.

[Bug 1053749] Re: UnicodeDecodeError from broken package descriptions

2013-03-15 Thread Peter De Maeyer
Using some of the above suggestions, I am still unable to identify the
problematic character.

grep-status -r . | iconv -f utf-8 -t ucs-2le 1 /dev/null; echo $?
iconv: illegal input sequence at position 1907586
1

Sooo... What file do I need to investigate?

I don't have /var/lib/dpkg/source, and /var/lib/dpkg/available doesn't have a
line number 1907586.
Possibly 1907586 is a character number rather than a line number, but I don't
know how to seek to character number.

[Bug 1047467] Re: launcher does not reveal when set to auto-hide and mouse is moved to left side or top left corner

2012-09-29 Thread Peter De Maeyer
Sine I pulled in updates a couple of days ago (around Sep 27, 2012), I
have the exact same problem in precise. I am using ubuntu-x-swat ppa. My
guess is that it's related to the new nvidia-current drivers (304.51). I
can't revert to the default ones from precise (295.49), because they
cause other (more serious) bugs.

Workaround: press the 'Super'-'F2' key combination to reveal the
launcher. Use the number keys for quick selection of items.

[Bug 990543] Re: After upgrade from oneiric to precise, mysqld fails to start due to missing apparmor 'local' usr.sbin.mysqld config file

2012-05-06 Thread Peter De Maeyer
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 986892 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/986892

** Description changed:

- I just upgraded a machine from oneiric to precise, after which mysqld failed
to start. I traced the problem to the fact that
/etc/apparmor.d/local/usr.sbin.myqld was missing, even though this file is by
default included from /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.myqld.
- A `touch /etc/apparmor.d/local/usr.sbin.myqld` solved the problem.

I've never touched any apparmor configs myself, so I doubt it was due to
some peculiarity in my usage of apparmor. Of course, there may have been
  a peculiarity during the upgrade process (didn't go entirely smoothly;
i386 dependences for skype and crossoveroffice required some manual
  intervention).

[Bug 953690] Re: unity crashed with NameError in reset_unity_compiz_profile(): global name 'GError' is not defined

2012-04-26 Thread Peter De Maeyer
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 965998 ***

Really weird... I get all these dialog boxes on an otherwise black
screen asking me questions, but since the screen is black I can't type
any answers... Until suddenly Chrome opens against a pitch black screen,
and opens this page for me...

Some people suggest doing unity --reset, but my question is _where_ to
get a terminal from? I tried it from tty1 (CTRL-ALT-F1), but that didn't
work. How the hell do I open a terminal?

[Bug 878980] Re: Icons missing for some menu items

I figured out why the guest session doesn't have icons. I noticed in the
Configuration Editor that I have
desktop/gnome/interface/menu_items_have_icons set to true, but in
the guest session this is set to false. Even when I set this to true
in the guest session, it still doesn't show any icons.

[Bug 878980] Re: Icons missing for some menu items

2011-10-21 Thread Peter De Maeyer
# No I did not change any settings to display icons in menus. It just broke
after upgrade to oneiric.
# Guest session: the guest session does not have any icons. I can't find any
option in the preferences to enable it, so I don't remember how I enabled it in
my session. I must have somehow enabled it a long time ago, probably in gutsy
or hardy even...
# Icon theme: Ambience. Note that I had to manually reset this theme after
upgrade. In natty, I also used Ambience, but after
upgrade to oneiric was screwed up: everything looked ugly. So I manually had to
reset the theme to Ambience again.

[Bug 878939] [NEW] Nautilus resets to Icons view whenever I change directory

2011-10-20 Thread Peter De Maeyer
Public bug reported:

I've always been using the List view in Nautilus. Since Oneiric
however, the view reverts to Icons whenever I change directory.

System:
* Ubuntu Oneiric amd64
* Nautilus version 1:3.2.0-0ubuntu5

Steps to reproduce:
* Launch Nautilus by clicking Home Folder in the launcher
* Set view to List (CTRL-2)
* Double-click on the Desktop folder

Expected:
* The Desktop folder opens in List view

What happens instead:
* The Desktop folder opens in Icons view

Observations:
* Once you set List view, Nautilus remembers it, but _only_ for that folder!
For every new folder, it falls back to Icons view. I want List view as
default...

Views tab, View new folders using:.

For some reason this setting got lost during the upgrade. The bug is in
fact that the default setting gets lost on upgrade.

[Bug 801570] [NEW] Keep in launcher is not persisted upon logout/login

2011-06-24 Thread Peter De Maeyer
Public bug reported:

Whenever I check Keep In Launcher for an app, it is not persisted when I log
out and in again.
Also, the clock in the top right, which used to be 24h clock, is now a 21h
AM/PM clock and I cannot change it back.

The reason I mention both these symptoms is because I think they may
have the same root cause: I recently installed and uninstalled Gnome3
desktop (according to the instructions on http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-
to-install-gnome3-on-ubuntu-11-04-nattyubuntu-10-10-maverick.html). I
started noticing both these issues afterwards.

System:
Ubuntu Linux 11.04, 32-bit pae/64-bit, NVidia

Steps to reproduce:
- Install/uninstall Gnome3 according to the instructions on
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-install-gnome3-on-ubuntu-11-04-nattyubuntu-10-10-maverick.html
- Additionally to purging the ppa, make sure to clean up configuration
leftovers (via Synaptic, find all obsolete packages with lingering
configuration and do completely remove... for them, or perform the necessary
command-line wizardry to achieve the same)
- Login and start an app (eg. Google Chrome)
- Do Keep In Launcher for the app
- Log out and back in

Expected:
- The Google Chrome shortcut is still in the launcher

What actually happens:
- The launcher panel reverted to its defaults, the Google Chrome shortcut is
gone. Chrome is just an example, in fact it happens for all apps

Yes, I have libconf0 installed. How will that help?

[Bug 800812] [NEW] Time date settings won't save 24-hour clock

2011-06-22 Thread Peter De Maeyer
Public bug reported:

I upgraded recently to Natty and Unity, and initially my clock was fine (24h
clock).
Due to numerous issues with Unity, I briefly installed (and uninstalled) Gnome
3 desktop (ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3).
Since then, my clock jumped to 12h AM/PM notation, and I can't set it back to
24h notation.
When I try to set the 24h clock, it isn't saved correctly in time date
settings.

Possibly related to bugs 735930 and 775940.

[Bug 270630] Re: Script '/etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/01ifupdown' exited with error status 1

2011-04-21 Thread Peter De Maeyer
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 280160 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/280160

I have the exact same error message in syslog: nm-dispatcher.action:
Script '/etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/01ifupdown' exited with error
status 1.. In my case, the connection status appears to be working, but
when I try to HTTP to an intranet URL over VPN I get a timeout.

I put some debugging output in the script
/etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/01ifupdown, and it turns out it gets
called with the parameter $2 vpn-up and vpn-down. The script only
knows up and down, so it fails with exit 1 (bottom of script).

This looks like a bug to me: the script is called with the wrong
parameters.

I don't think it has anything to do with self-restarts.

[Bug 301693] Re: nm-dispatcher.action send wrong argument to scripts

2011-04-21 Thread Peter De Maeyer
I'm on Ubuntu 10.04, and this bug has still not been solved. Doesn't
seem too hard to fix though...

Use case:
Connect to VPN via the network manager

Symptom:
Connection seems established, but syslog shows error: nm-dispatcher.action:
Script '/etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/01ifupdown' exited with error status
1.

Cause:
As already mentioned, the script is called with arguments vpn-up and
vpn-down while it expects up and down. Because it does not recognize the
arguments vpn-up/vpn-down, it exits with status 1 resulting in the error in
syslog.

[Bug 251107] Re: [Intrepid] nvidia_drv.so: undefined symbol: AllocateScreenPrivateIndex

2008-11-12 Thread Peter De Maeyer
I just pulled in the Intrepid proposed updates and installed the
recommended proprietary nvidia driver.

The NVIDIA Driver Version 96.43.09 works like a charm for my Quadro4 900
XGL (rev a3).

[Bug 251567] [NEW] d4x segfaults upon addition of a new download

2008-07-24 Thread Peter De Maeyer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: d4x

A friend of mine recommended d4x to me, a download manager. However, as
soon as I paste a new download link into it it segfaults. We're both
running the same ubuntu version (8.04 with latest updates), it works on
his machine and segfaults on mine. The difference is that I have
installed the x86_64 version while he uses the x86 version.

For instance the a link I'm trying to add as download is

[Bug 250583] [NEW] Konica Minolta Magicolor 2400W uses incorrect driver by default

2008-07-21 Thread Peter De Maeyer
Public bug reported:

When I attach my KONICA MINOLTA magicolor 2400W printer, it is
detected but it uses the wrong driver by default. The default driver is
Minolta magicolor 2300 DL Foomatic/foo2zjs (recommended) which does
not work. In order to install the correct driver, I have to manually
install the package m2300w, and then select Minolta-magicolor
2400W. It would be nicer if ubuntu would auto-detect this correctly.

I am using ubuntu 8.04.1.
