[Bug 1452612] [NEW] segfault crash on all windows when resizing window

2015-05-07 Thread Rory McCann
Public bug reported:

Sometimes when resizing a gnome-terminal window, it will freeze and then
crash (window disappear). It also takes out *all* gnome-terminal
windows, not just the one which crashed.

I have used gnome-terminal for years, and never had this problem and
it's happened several times over the last few weeks now.

This error is in syslog:

[Bug 1354109] Re: Doesn't allow entry of same-sex marriages

2014-08-10 Thread Rory McCann
One of the suggestions in the linked Gramps feature request bug is to
refer to the person as a spouse rather than wife or husband if it
 is a same-sex marriage.

That's not required. It's not *wrong* to refer to a man's husband has
his spouse, but you could just say his husband. Unless the plan is
to remove the words wife/husband from the software.

[Bug 1354109] Re: Doesn't allow entry of same-sex marriages

2014-08-10 Thread Rory McCann
 I found
if I wanted to add an existing person to a family of the wrong gender,
they cannot be added (they do not appear in the list). First you have to
edit the person to be the correct gender for a traditional family to
force them to appear in the list. Then afterwards you can change the
gender back to the real gender.

That is not a solution, and is absurd. I might as well use a
spreadsheet for managing my family tree.

[Bug 1354109] [NEW] Doesn't allow entry of same-sex marriages

2014-08-07 Thread Rory McCann

Gramps only seems to allow mixed-sex relationships. I'm male and have a

[Bug 1179187] [NEW] Flickr account is unaddable if Flickr/Yahoo decide to ask you security questions about your account

2013-05-12 Thread Rory McCann
Public bug reported:

I tried to add a Flickr account to shotwell. I put in my yahoo/flickr
username and password, but flickr decided to do some extra validation
(probably because this is a different 'browser'). It showed me a captcha
(which i passed), then asked me a security question, or offered to send
an email. But, inside shotwell, I can't scroll down to click on the
'send verification email' button.

If shotwell opened a page in my webbrowser to authorise the app, this
would not be a problem

[Bug 724280] Re: Keys become stuck when disabling keyboard

2012-05-25 Thread Rory McCann
I have noticed this behaviour aswell, and am looking for a solution.
This blog post also records this problem, and hypothesises: I am
guessing when you hit the enter and the command is executed, meaning the
keyboard is disabled, but the keyup event is not yet sent, so X still
thinks the enter key is pressed down. http://blog.yjl.im/2010/12/using-

[Bug 904972] [NEW] Sometimes unable to Alt-Tab between Terminal and Web Browser

2011-12-15 Thread Rory McCann
Public bug reported:

Occasionally I am unable to alt-tab between, say, the web browser that I
am typing in now, and a terminal window I have open. Both web browser
terminal are full screen (as is the unity default). Both have more than
1 tab open.

Usually if I am 'in' the terminal, and alt-tab, I can bring up the web
browser, and can then alt-tab back and forward a few time. However
after a while 'in' the web browser, I press alt-tab and the LHS dock
pops up and the terminal icon wiggles a bit. However the web browser is
still taking up all the screen and the focus and is on top of the
terminal. This essentially means I cannot switch active window. If I
press alt-tab now it only repeats this (i.e. wigglying icon in dock).
The only way to bring up the terminal is to move my mouse over to the
dock press the icon.

[Bug 886874] [NEW] rsibreak doesn't always work force a break when using fullscreen apps on unity

2011-11-06 Thread Rory McCann
Public bug reported:

rsibreak does not work very well in unity. It only sometimes seems to
pop up the Take a break window. Many times it's as if the timer has
not run out. The rsibreak dock icon shows a pink X inside the blue-
purple countdown timer icon.

I've sometimes used unity and kept some/most of the windows not
maximised and rsibreak seems to work regularly then. If I keep windows
maximised (which is the unity standard), then rsibreak often times
doesn't popup the window, and hence doesn't work.

rsibreak is the only installable RSI break programme in ubuntu 11.10
(workrave is not packaged and the old typing break software in gnome has
been removed). For those of us who suffer from RSI, or use Ubuntu in a
workplace in the EU, it's important that there is a working typing break
feature.

[Bug 884369] [NEW] xchat can't go into the 'dock' on unity

2011-10-31 Thread Rory McCann
Public bug reported:

I use xchat as an IRC client, and on old gnome (not unity) when I
started xchat there was an xchat icon (a yellow x) in the
'dock'/'taskbar'/'where the clock other notifications go'. Clicking on
that would hide xchat, clicking on it again would show xchat.

However now, with unity, when i start xchat, no X appears in the

[Bug 884377] [NEW] Ubuntu Desktop lacks a typing break/anti-RSI software

2011-10-31 Thread Rory McCann
Public bug reported:

I occasionally suffer from RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury) in my wrists
arms. I enabled the typing break in Gnome before which was a godsend,
and helped a lot.

I recently upgraded to 11.10 and found that there was no typing break
feature in Unity, but that also the typing break has been removed from
'gnome shell'. There is no built in option for a typing break. There
appear to be several 3rd party typing break programmes, but some are not
available for ubuntu. There's a gnome programme called drwright
(apparently), but it's not packaged for ubuntu, there's 'workrave', but
that's not packaged/installable for 11.10. Right now I'm trailing a KDE
application (rsibreak), but it has a bad UI, and does not properly lock
the screen aswell, so is a step down.

NB: It is also a requirement under EU law that workers be able to take
regular breaks if the use a visual display unit. This might make stock
Ubuntu unsuitable to be used in workplaces. e.g. Sec 72 of Statutory
Instrument 299 of 2007 of Irish law (cf.
http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/2007/en/si/0299.html#article72 )

( This is mostly a copy of previously reported bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/883228 incorrectly
reported against unity )

[Bug 864710] [NEW] Software Centre provides different results for music applet and applet music

2011-10-02 Thread Rory McCann
Public bug reported:

I wanted to install an applet in my Gnome toolbar (the old one not
unity) to control banshee. I opened Ubuntu Software Centre and searched
for music applet, which had 1 result (Guayadeque Music Player). I
then tried applet music, and got 2 different results: (GNOME panel
applet to control several music players and current files applet for
GNOME.

Word order for searching in the Ubuntu Software Centre should be
irrelevant. Otherwise if I'm searching for some software I'd have to try
multiple permutations of the serach term. It is also confusing that what
I actually want GNOME panel applet to control several music players is
only visible when you search for the grammatically incorrect and
unnatural term applet music.

[Bug 842546] [NEW] Mouse pointer randomly stops appearing on one monitor (in a dual monitor set up)

2011-09-06 Thread Rory McCann
Public bug reported:

I have 2 monitors plugged in and using in a dual screen set up.
Occasionally (~ once or twice per month), the mouse pointer will just
dissappear from the left monitor. The screen still displays stuff and is
updated. I can move the mouse pointer over to that monitor and i can
still click on things and the clicks cause actions etc., however I can't
see the pointer. This only happens to the left monitor. This is a work
machine and the only sort of programmes I'm running is a webbrowser,
terminal, gVim, etc., no full screen applications or game or 3d graphics
or anything like this.

How do I fix this? Is there more information I can provide?

[Bug 794970] [NEW] Unity task launcher on LHS not loading when I log in

2011-06-09 Thread Rory McCann
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 today and I'm using the default unity. For
the first few times I logged in everything seemed normal. However after
1 or 2 logins later, the task launcher at the left hand side of the

grepping dmeg I found i wasn't. removing nvidia-current and rebooting
fixed this problem. i have updated the bug description to match that.

[Bug 668238] [NEW] When using meld as a source code browser, and you change the temp file it asks if you want to save changes to the temp file

2010-10-29 Thread Rory McCann
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: meld

If you have a SVN directory with local changes, and you start meld on it e.g.
meld . on the command line, then you will see all the changed files.
Open one of the files with changes.
The left hand side is the orignial version from SVN, and it is a temp file
(usually under /tmp/)
Change some part of the file on the left.

What happens:
Meld will warn you that you have changed a file (the file in /tmp) and ask you
if you want to save the changes.

What's wrong with this:#

Saving changes to the temp file is pointless, because that file will be
thrown away, any changes made to it will be ignored.

This file on the left is the version of the file in SVN, if the user
changes file in meld, then it's not obvious what that means, this causes
user confusion.

What should happen:
Meld should realise that the file on the left (under /tmp) is a temporary file
and shouldn't warn the user that there are changes to it.

[Bug 667698] [NEW] Gwibber doesn't use webbrowser to authenticate twitter, instead asking users to put in password into the application

2010-10-28 Thread Rory McCann
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gwibber

Gwibber has no accounts. I am setting up a twitter account. I clicked
authorize.

What happens:

A little twitter web page opens in the gwibber application and asks for
my username and password

What should happen:

I expect my webbrowser to open a new tab with the twitter authorise
this application page. I have already signed into twitter on my web
browser.

The point of OAuth is so applications don't have to save passwords,
however i can't know if gwibber is saving my password.

[Bug 663811] [NEW] VCS diff mode: Toggling 'flatten' causes a rescan of whole directory

2010-10-20 Thread Rory McCann
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: meld

I have a svn directory with some local changes. I opened it in meld, and
it rescanned and presented the list of files that have changed.
'flatten' was selected by default, i pressed that button and it expanded
the file tree, however it rescanned the whole directory tree again,
slowing down.

meld should in some way remember the files that are changed, so that
pressing flatten (etc.) will be a fast operation.

[Bug 651287] [NEW] spatialite doesn't include init_spatialite which is needed for SRID transformations geometry_columns

2010-09-29 Thread Rory McCann
Public bug reported:

I have installed the spatialite-bin and libspatialite2 packages and can
use the spatialite binary for simple things. however I can't find the
file init_spatialite-2.x.sql on my system and dpkg says neither of
those packages have that file.

This file has data that's needed to perform some geographic
calculations, such as converting between spatial reference/coordinate
systems. If you are making a spatial database from scratch you need to
import this file first. Various spatialite tutorials tell you to import
this file first (e.g.
http://www.bostongis.com/?content_name=spatialite_tut01).

Not having this file limits the functionality of spatialite, ergo I'm
filing a bug. This file should be included in one of the packages.

[Bug 627976] [NEW] ffmpeg should be installable from apt with x264/h264 support without users needing to recompile it

2010-09-01 Thread Rory McCann
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ffmpeg

I believe the current version of ffmpeg and x264 in apt are missing a
feature. Users are frequently advised to recompile ffmpeg x264 from
source if they want some features. There is even a popular guide on
ubuntu forums for recompiling the software
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=786095). Users on the ffmpeg
mailing list are pointed to this. The ubuntu wiki contains guides on how
to 'fix' ffmpeg
(https://help.ubuntu.com/community/iPodVideoEncoding#Fixing ffmpeg on
Ubuntu)

If a guide starts with First remove the packages from apt, then
recompile, then there is something wrong with the packages in apt.

Both ffmpeg and x264 are packaged in ubuntu
(http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=x264 and
http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=ffmpeg). Is there not some
way to make a package that users can install instead of requiring them
to recompile software?

[Bug 627976] Re: ffmpeg should be installable from apt with x264/h264 support without users needing to recompile it

2010-09-01 Thread Rory McCann
I installed the ubuntu-restricted-extras package, as you suggested, and
I still have the same problem. I followed the ubuntu forums guide to
recompile ffmpeg x264 and that worked.

For the record the command I am trying to do:

ffmpeg -i './file.vob' -f mpegts -acodec libmp3lame -ar 48000 -ab 64000
-vcodec x264 -b 80 -flags +loop -cmp +chroma -subq 5 -trellis 1
-refs 1 -coder 0 -me_range 16 -keyint_min 25 -sc_threshold 40 -i_qfactor
0.71 -bt 200k -maxrate 80 -bufsize 80 -rc_eq
'blurCplx^(1-qComp)' -qcomp 0.6 -qmin 10 -qmax 51 -qdiff 4 -level 30
-aspect 320:240 -g 30 -async 2 test.ts

and the (failing) output is:

FFmpeg version SVN-r24342, Copyright (c) 2000-2010 the FFmpeg developers
  built on Jul 20 2010 09:23:37 with gcc 4.4.1

Stream #0.1[0xa0]: Audio: pcm_s16be, 48000 Hz, 2 channels, s16, 1536 kb/s
Unknown encoder 'x264'

I have tried the above command with -vcodec libx264, -vcodec h264
and -vcodec libh264, all give the same error.

I am trying to make some files for HTTP Streaming as suggested here:
http://www.ioncannon.net/programming/452/iphone-http-streaming-with-
ffmpeg-and-an-open-source-segmenter/

In other words, installing ubuntu-restricted-extras does not fix the
problem, removing the package and recompiling does fix the problem

[Bug 625381] [NEW] Packages from a PPA give a misleading error message when you use ubuntu-bug on them,

2010-08-27 Thread Rory McCann
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apport

I have chromium-browser installed from a PPA. I wanted to file a bug on
it, so I did ubuntu-bug chromium-browser on the command line. I got an
error message saying:

The problem cannot be reported:

This is not a genuine Ubuntu package

This is not a helpful error message and is misleading. I have a few
issues with the wording.

 (a) The problem cannot be reported - It is more accurate to say that
it can't be reported in Launchpad or ubuntu-bug. This message might make
a user think that it is impossible to report this problem anywhere, at
all. Some suggestions for better wording: The problem cannot be
reported using this tool., The problem cannot be reported at this
time., The problem cannot be reported with the ubuntu-bug programme.
The problem cannot be reported in Launchpad.

 (b) This is not a genuine Ubuntu package. This phrasing is because
this package is from a PPA. This wording might mislead a user to think
that there is something fake or 'non-genuine' about the software
package. They might think that there is something wrong with the
package, the software they have installed, or their computer/ubuntu
install. I suggest these more honest wordings: This package is not
maintained by the wider Ubuntu community, This package is not part of
the Ubuntu software ecosystem This package is from a specialised
software source

[Bug 426215] Re: apt:package-name isn't handled by the Store when appropriate

2010-08-08 Thread Rory McCann
I recently had a problem which could have been solved if there was some
way to 'link' to ubuntu software screens.

I had to walk someone through searching on the Ubuntu Software Centre
(https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-ie/2010-August/000749.html).
If I could have said Click this link xx. then it would have
been much easier to help this person.

[Bug 607487] [NEW] OOo writer spell checker marks email addresses as misspelled

2010-07-19 Thread Rory McCann
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

If you enter an email address in writer and do a spell check. it
highlights the email address as a misspelled word.

it should not do this. (a) email addresses are not in standard english
format (all those @'s and .'s), so I think no email address will ever be
a valid english word. (b) email addresses sometime require
'misspellings', if you change the letters in an email address, it's a
different email address and (c) it will never be able to suggest a
correct spelling for an email address so the user will be bothered with
a useless diaglog that they must dismiss

[Bug 356075] Re: zoom key is not working (microsoft ergonomic keyboard 7000)

This also doesn't work for me.

I have a similar keyboard (the wired 4000), which has a simple 'zoom'
toggle. Like the original poster, I see nothing on xev when pressing the
keys.

Personally I don't care that this doesn't work. I'm not ever sure what
'Zoom' would mean, since one nornally doesn't zoom on a desktop. If it
was to scroll instead, that would be helpful.

[Bug 355961] Re: jerky mouse

2010-03-27 Thread Rory McCann
What sort of mouse is it? A wired mouse or a wireless mouse? Sometimes a
wireless mouse can put itself to sleep to conserve battery if you don't
use it for a minute. This can cause the mouse to seem to 'lag'. However
since you said that it happens on windows, it's unlikely to be that.

Another potential cause is if your computer is busy and doing things,
then it might appear to lag. This usually happens if the computer starts
to swap. You could display a system monitor in the panel, and see if the
CPU, memory or disk spikes when you get the slugish mouse. That might
tell you if this is the cause of the problem.

Have you tried it with other mice?

I was affected by this on my karmic box.

My work around was to add noauto to the /etc/fstab line for the NFS

worked for my situation.

[Bug 515404] [NEW] find should understand size -100K aswell as -size -100k

2010-02-01 Thread Rory McCann
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: findutils

You can find files below a certain file size in find with the -size
option. However to specify (say) 100 KB, you need to enter 100k, find
does not understand 100K, i.e. an upper case K instead of lower case.
I think find should be able to recognise upper and lower case k (ie k
and K) for kilobytes in the file size.

[Bug 515481] [NEW] Strange illegal character in --uuid-help output

2010-02-01 Thread Rory McCann
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: atomicparsley

If you do AtomicParsley --uuid-help, there's a strange character on
line 12, that appears as a question mark for me

--information , -i (str)Set an information tag on uuid
atom nameinf

Between the name and inf. A hex dump shows me that the character is
0xa9, which on it's own is not valid UTF-8

[Bug 514480] [NEW] While on a typing break, pressing a key should make the timer start tying from the start again

2010-01-29 Thread Rory McCann
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I use gnome-typing-monitor to force myself to take regular typing
breaks. Once a typing break starts, one sometimes continues typing, and
the timer continues to count down. Instead I think it should reset the
count down to the total time, in order to *force* a person to take a
typing break.

For example, if someone has set up a 5 minute break every 20 minutes,
and presses a key while the typing break shows '2:03 minutes remaining',
then it should reset to 5:00 and stay locked for the next 5 minutes.

[Bug 506596] [NEW] ts -r doesn't work

2010-01-12 Thread Rory McCann
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: moreutils

ts is one of the commands in moreutils for timestamp input. The man
page says:

If the -r switch is passed, it instead converts existing timestamps in the
input to relative times, such as 15m5s ago. Many common timestamp
formats are supported. Note that the Time::Duration and Date::Parse perl
modules are required for this mode to work.

However if you use the -r option, you get the following error message:

$ echo test | ts -r
Can't locate Time/Duration.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /etc/perl
/usr/local/lib/perl/5.10.0 /usr/local/share/perl/5.10.0 /usr/lib/perl5
/usr/share/perl5 /usr/lib/perl/5.10 /usr/share/perl/5.10
/usr/local/lib/site_perl .) at (eval 1) line 3.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at (eval 1) line 3.

If ts depends on extra perl modules to work, then moreutils should depend on it
