A better workaround is to use the Saved Password Editor.
After you entered the password you'll get the thunderbird password prompt
with username and password filled and only have to hit enter.
See here:
https://addons.mozilla.org/de/thunderbird/addon/saved-password-editor/

[Bug 1314160] Re: Apparmor profile violated: cupsd does mknod on /var/cache/samba/gencache.tdb

2015-01-15 Thread Stefan Fleiter
This bug seems to prevent me from printing.
I saw this message in syslog, too and usr.sbin.cupsd Apparmor profile caused
samba authentication errors:

E [15/Jan/2015:12:37:35 +0100] [Job 112] Session setup failed:
NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL
E [15/Jan/2015:12:37:35 +0100] [Job 112] Session setup failed:

E [15/Jan/2015:12:37:35 +0100] [Job 112] Tree connect failed

After disabling the cups profile printing worked again.

[Bug 1243211] [NEW] [saucy] eclipse menu not working

2013-10-22 Thread Stefan Fleiter
Public bug reported:

Since upgrade of ubuntu from 13.04 to 13.10 a self installed installation of
Eclipse Kepler still shows the menu bar,
but clicking on it does not show the menu.
This makes Eclipse useless since there are common actions that can not be
activated otherwise.

I found a workaround at askubuntu.com,
http://askubuntu.com/a/363237/128851.

I start eclipse from the shell with
UBUNTU_MENUPROXY=0 ~/opt/eclipse/eclipse
which repairs the menu for me.

[Bug 645321] [NEW] [maverick] After resume from suspend screen stays blank

2010-09-22 Thread Stefan Fleiter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

After suspend (2ram) the system comes up again, wlan connects, etc. but the
screens stay
blank.
Trying to switch to VT1 with CTRL-F1 has no effect.
Nothing except a reboot seems to fix this.

Supending from text mode as described here
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernateResume#Suspending%20from%20text%20mode
works fine.

Is there anything I can to to debug this?

[Bug 425505] Re: solfege dumps core if you try to view the help file

2010-07-28 Thread Stefan Fleiter
As noted in the debian bug the help browser was removed in 3.15.5 of
solfege, so the bug is automatically fixed or has become invalid.

The current version in maverick is 3.16.3-2, so the bug is fixed there.
See https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/maverick/+source/solfege.

[Bug 508848] Re: does not mount decrypted secondary luks crypttab partitions (btrfs)

2010-05-02 Thread Stefan Fleiter
As I understand the code mountall(8) did never spawn mount(8) because it did
not find the ID_FS_{TYPE,USAGE} attributes.
So mount only got called interactively by me, fetched the fs_vfstype from
fstab(5) and did what it was told to do, it called mount(2) which did not care
for the ext2 signature.
mount(8) does not search for fs signatures if the type is given.

Why can mountall not do the same?

If mountall would notice the ID_FS_AMBIVALENT attribute it could at least write
a warning message before spawning the recovery shell.

According to
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=473514
cryptsetup and mkswap zap all existing filesystem signatures nowadays, but
existing filesystems could still have multiple signatures.

[Bug 508848] Re: does not mount decrypted secondary luks crypttab partitions (btrfs)

2010-04-30 Thread Stefan Fleiter
I could repair my system and it boots now without interaction.

But IMHO there is still one bug left (probably in mountall):
If blkid does find more than filesystem signature, either an error should be
printed or
the fs type from /etc/fstab should be used if it matches one finding of blkid.

Many linux users will not be able to fix such a problem themselves, even less
will be able to diagnose it, so the boot process should try the best...

[Bug 508848] Re: does not mount decrypted secondary luks crypttab partions

2010-04-28 Thread Stefan Fleiter
I think I understand the problem better now.
When I found the log line
try_udev_device: ignored /dev/mapper/var (not yet ready?)
I looked in mountall.c

»···if ((! action)
»···|| (! strncmp (kernel, dm-, 3))
»···|| (! strncmp (kernel, md, 2))
»···|| (! strncmp (kernel, loop, 4))
»···|| (! strncmp (kernel, ram, 3))) {
»···»···if ((! usage)  (! type)  (! uuid)  (! label)) {
»···»···»···if (action)
»···»···»···»···nih_debug (ignored %s (not yet ready?),
devname);
»···»···»···return;
»···»···}
»···}

When I then looked in udev-dump.log the problem there became something clearer
immediately.
The ID_FS_* attributes are missing for /dev/mapper/var.
The important question which remains is why they are missing. :-)

Thanks a lot for your support until now.

But is there nothing I can do to pin this down?
No debug printfs or something like that?
Stracing a process?
Nothing?
I do not understand the plumbing layer enough to do this on my own.
So I would need some assistance...

And shouldn't a bug be opened regarding the missing lines in /var/log/boot.log?
I assume it is an upstart bug.
Is that correct?

You are right.
When I do not stop mountall /var/log/boot.log gets written without enabling
bootlogd in /etc/default/bootlogd.
A minor nit is that the time of the file is wrong, it's two hours behind.
Her the shell output 5 minutes after boot:

# ls -al /var/log/boot.log

[Bug 563260] Re: divertion of /sbin/udevadm is not fixed after udev install

2010-04-16 Thread Stefan Fleiter
I am quite sure this was caused by the following dpkg bug:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=575891
I have /var on btrfs and the symptoms match exactly.

The dpkg bug is fixed and in Lucid there is an updated package
which includes the fix.

The remaining questions are:
- Will this fix be backported to the other supported ubuntu versions?
- How can ubuntu make sure that everyone affected by this gets their
  installations repaired?
The problem is that you have to do a reinstall of all installed packages
which means you have to download every package and reinstall
  them afterwards.

How to fix this is described here:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=575891#39

Because the dpkg bug is fixed this can be reduced to:
# Reinstall (almost) everything at once.
aptitude reinstall '~i !~E !~prequired !x11-common'

# These have dependency loops, so must be reinstalled singly.
for i in `aptitude search -F %p '~i(~E|~prequired|x11-common)'`
do aptitude reinstall $i
done

Note that I do not (yet) have tested the described workaround myself.

[Bug 508848] Re: does not mount decrypted secondary luks crypttab partions

2010-04-15 Thread Stefan Fleiter
Enabling of bootlogd is probably needed because /var is on a separate partition
I have to mount with mount -a. Therefore no filesystem event is triggered for
/var.

# ls -al /etc/init/cryptdisks-udev.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 435 2010-02-20 07:28 /etc/init/cryptdisks-udev.conf

# ls -al /lib/cryptsetup/cryptdisks.functions
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 16457 2010-02-24 21:48
/lib/cryptsetup/cryptdisks.functions

cryptdisks-udev starts on block-device-added event.
What triggers that event?
It's not mentioned in /var/log/boot.log.

the divertion of /sbin/udevadm to /sbin/udevadm.upgrade is not removed.
Please not I do not reboot or do anything which could prevent the
installation from finishing.
I always wait until aptitude tells me to press any key to continue.

# dpkg-divert --list /sbin/udevadm ~/ubuntu/udev/udev_divert.txt
local diversion of /sbin/udevadm to /sbin/udevadm.upgrade

After the update of the system there is only udev.list in
/var/lib/dpkg/info/udev*

# ls -al /var/lib/dpkg/info/udev.*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5439 2010-04-14 19:14 /var/lib/dpkg/info/udev.list

I fix the problem by means of dpkg -i of the same version.
Afterwards there are the following files:
# ls -al /var/lib/dpkg/info/udev.*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 146 2010-04-13 16:06 /var/lib/dpkg/info/udev.conffiles

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5439 2010-04-14 17:53 /var/lib/dpkg/info/udev.list
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 8598 2010-04-13 16:06 /var/lib/dpkg/info/udev.md5sums

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 4906 2010-04-13 16:06 /var/lib/dpkg/info/udev.preinst

I will attach a dpkg.log shortly.

[Bug 277211] Re: Dell Wireless 355 Bluetooth card can't turned on in Ubuntu

2010-03-22 Thread Stefan Fleiter
I had the same problem.
I always thought that the following line from lsusb would be my bluetooth device
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 0a5c:4500 Broadcom Corp. BCM2046B1 USB 2.0 Hub (part of
BCM2046 Bluetooth)
but in reality the following line
Bus 003 Device 003: ID 413c:8126 Dell Computer Corp. Wireless 355 Bluetooth
is the bluetooth adapter and only appeared after having enabled bluetooth in
vista.

To find that out a lot of research was needed.

[Bug 539335] [NEW] [lucid] no bluetooth device found

2010-03-15 Thread Stefan Fleiter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bluez

I have seen the other reports and do not think this is a duplicate.
I do not file this by means of ubuntu-bug because of bug 538097.

First I enabled the bluetooth device in the bios,
but still no success.

lsusb finds one:
# lsusb | grep -i broadcom
Bus 003 Device 004: ID 0a5c:4503 Broadcom Corp.
Bus 003 Device 003: ID 0a5c:4502 Broadcom Corp. Keyboard (Boot Interface
Subclass)
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 0a5c:4500 Broadcom Corp. BCM2046B1 USB 2.0 Hub (part of

dell Wireless Tool does find the device:
# sudo dellWirelessCtl --st_bt
Radio Status for Bluetooth:
Bluetooth enabled at boot
Bluetooth supported
Bluetooth enabled
Bluetooth installed
Bluetooth controlled by wireless switch at boot
Bluetooth runtime switch control currently enabled
Status Code: 0

But hcitool does not find a device:
# hcitool dev

bluetooth-applet says that my computer does not have any Bluetooth adapters
plugged in.

There is no bluetoothd running:

udev-finish.conf writes some dynamically generated udev config files to to the
/etc/udev/rules.d directory.
That seems ugly and can cause some problems:

- /etc/udev/rules.d/README states that /etc/udev/rules.d
  is for local rules
- /etc is not for dynamic content, boot should be able without a writable /
directory
- rules will never be removed again, only added

For these reasons a tmpfs mountpoint would be more suitable for these
rules.

[Bug 492257] Re: package samba-common 2:3.4.0-3ubuntu5.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 10

2010-02-07 Thread Stefan Fleiter
It seems to be a debconf problem.

The following exists with exit code 10:
LANG=C DEBCONF_DEBUG=developer sudo debconf /var/lib/dpkg/info/grub-pc.postinst
configure
LANG=C sudo debconf --frontend=readline /var/lib/dpkg/info/grub-pc.postinst
configure

But this one succeeds (notice the additional sh):
LANG=C sudo debconf --frontend=readline sh /var/lib/dpkg/info/grub-pc.postinst
configure

[Bug 492257] Re: package samba-common 2:3.4.0-3ubuntu5.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 10

2010-02-07 Thread Stefan Fleiter
I followd the execution of debconf recursively.

The following
/usr/share/debconf/frontend sh -x /usr/bin/ucf --three-way --debconf-ok
/var/run/samba/upgrades/smb.conf /etc/samba/smb.conf
failed in
+ db_x_loadtemplatefile /var/lib/dpkg/info/ucf.templates ucf
+ _db_cmd X_LOADTEMPLATEFILE /var/lib/dpkg/info/ucf.templates ucf
+ IFS= printf %s\n X_LOADTEMPLATEFILE /var/lib/dpkg/info/ucf.templates ucf
+ IFS=
 read -r _db_internal_line
+ RET=10 failed to open /var/lib/dpkg/info/ucf.templates: No such file or
directory
+ return 10

/var/lib/dpkg/info/ucf.templates was missing

But it does not belong to the files I moved away:
LANG=C ls ~/dpkg_bug/ucf.*
ls: cannot access /home/xxx/dpkg_bug/ucf.*: No such file or directory

A reinstall of ucf fixed this for me.

[Bug 508940] Re: KNetworkManager installation misconfigured

2010-01-26 Thread Stefan Fleiter
After *lot* of research I found out, that
/lib/dbus-1.0/dbus-daemon-launch-helper
had the wrong permissions.
A reinstall of every package with dbus in it's name fixed this.

The question is how the wrong permissions where attached to this file.

Now ck-list-sessions does work and
KNetworkmanager is funcational again, too.

Here the log of strace -v -e read=3 -o consolekit.log ck-list-
sessions.

The following error messages seem suspect:
org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NameHasNoOwner
org.free desktop.DBus Could not get owner of name
'org.freedesktop.ConsoleKit': no such name

org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.PermissionsInvalid
org.freedesktop.DBus The permission of the setuid helper is not correct

Maybe the second set of errors is caused by the first?
But I do not know any dbus internals.

[Bug 508832] [NEW] dbus does not start again if not cleanly shutdown before

2010-01-17 Thread Stefan Fleiter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dbus

if /var/run/dbus/pid exists, f.e. after dbus crashed,
it won't get started again until the pid file is manually removed.

The first bug ist that upstart does not recognize that dbus is not running
anymore.
Is this a bug in upstart or in dbus.conf?

The pid file should be removed if dbus is not running any more,
so dbus can be started again.
That is the second bug.

[Bug 508848] [NEW] mountall does not mount decrypted secondary luks crypttab partions

2010-01-17 Thread Stefan Fleiter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mountall

I was told to open a bug in bug 502665 comment 2.

In this setup I have three partitions decrypted by luks cryptsetup.
The passprhase for / is entered manually, for /var and /home
key files located in /etc are used to avoid having to enter the passphrase
three times during the boot process.

mountall does mount / successfully, but does not mount /var and /home
even after they are decrypted by cryptsetup.

After opening a shell (ctrl-alt-del is mapped to open a shell on tty2 here)
I mount the missing partitions with mount -a -v and then restart mountall
by sudo service mountall stop and sudo service mountall start.

Then mountall does its job.

I will attach debug log of mountall (first and second run) and mount
shortly.
