[Bug 509782] [NEW] pulseaudio resume(pm) fails for nis-user

2010-01-19 Thread Thomas K.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Hi,

I am using NIS (aka: YP)

When I resume after hibernating to RAM, I cannot play any sound.

I checked the script /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/01PulseAudio

The problem seems to be, that the sudo-commands in the resume-function needs an
home-directory,
but because of NIS, I think, it cannot be identified at this point of resume.

The error of the sudo-command is:

do_ypcall: clnt_call: RPC: Unable to send; errno = Network is unreachable
   YPBINDPROC_DOMAIN: Domain not bound
do_ypcall: clnt_call: RPC: Unable to send; errno = Network is unreachable
   YPBINDPROC_DOMAIN: Domain not bound
do_ypcall: clnt_call: RPC: Unable to send; errno = Network is unreachable
   YPBINDPROC_DOMAIN: Domain not bound

A workaround is to execute pulseaudio -k for the user is logged in after
resume is completed,
so I changed the above mentioned script and add killall pulseaudio at the end
of the resume-function,
but that is not very nice, also I have to un-mute after resume. ;)

I try to change the order of the scripts (in /usr/lib/pm-
utils/sleep.d/), but this does not work.

I would be glad for any working solution.

Thanks in advance!

Thomas

[Bug 499963] [NEW] mountall does not wait for completion of cryptdisks-enabled

2009-12-23 Thread Thomas K.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mountall

I am using cryptsetup to encrypt the filesystems '/var', '/home' and some more
using LUKS.
I am using a keyfile (on the unencrypted root-filesystem) to decrypt and open
the LUKS-devices.

But mountall does not wait for cryptdisks-enabled to be completed.
Instead it opens a maintenance-shell.

In this maintenance-shell, I just have to wait for some seconds and then
press Ctrl-D to continue to sucessfully complete the boot-process.

So, I think mountall is not patient enough. ;)

If I remove stop on rcS from the file /etc/init/mountall.conf, I
repeatedly get some warnings in cause of the 'unavailable' filesystems,
but after that, everything works fine. (So, that is my current work-
around.)

(The above mentioned example slightly differs from my real architecture,
cause a keyfile on an unencrypted root-filesystem makes no sense at all.
Of course, I have tested the described behaviour using a setup as
mentioned.)

TIA!

2009-04-25 Thread Thomas K
You can re-open it, if you want (change status to new)--it would need
someone connected to the package (which I'm not) to set it as wishlist. I'm
afraid it'd probably be fairly low on anyone's priority list, though.

Re: [Bug 365650] Re: kolourpaint can't be installed on jaunty

2009-04-24 Thread Thomas K
OK, cool. I don't know exactly why apt-get was refusing to do it via
kolourpaint, but the idea is to use the new package name, so it's all OK.

Add/remove (kpackagekit): The servers may have been a bit busy, or it may be
a problem with kpackagekit, I know there are a few. If it does it
consistently, then see if anyone's already filed a bug for it.

[Bug 365520] Re: 'E:Type 'debsrc' is not known on line 64 in source list /etc/apt/sources

2009-04-23 Thread Thomas K
It should start deb-src, not debsrc. Open the file in a text editor and
change it.

This isn't a bug in itself. If a program wrote that line incorrectly,
then that is a bug. I'll mark it as invalid, feel free to reopen it if
you can work out where it came from.

[Bug 365597] Re: Impossible to change desktop theme

2009-04-23 Thread Thomas K
I believe that that module (Desktop theme details) is to edit the
contents of each desktop theme, not to set your desktop theme. So the
apply button will only become active if you change one of the details of
a theme. Indeed, testing that, if you change something and click apply,
it doesn't apply the change to your desktop, it creates an extra
customised theme. I agree that this is not really intuitive.

To change your desktop theme, right click on your desktop, or click on
the cashew in the top right, and select Appearance settings. Then you
can choose a desktop theme to apply from the relevant dropdown.

The 'Get Hot New Stuff' system for installing new desktop themes works
separately: when you click install, the theme will be installed, with no
need to click apply.

[Bug 223274] Re: Widgets are in square box of background colour

2009-04-17 Thread Thomas K
Well, gtk-qt-engine, which this bug is about, does precisely that. The
trouble is that it doesn't work very well, especially for Firefox.

I don't agree that QtCurve is a hacky solution: it merely provides a GTK
theme that doesn't look out of place among Qt applications. I can't see
most people worrying that not every app looks exactly the same. And if
they do, they can use kde-style-qtcurve as well.

Of course, you could always use the qgtkstyle you mention and just let
GTK do all the actual rendering!

[Bug 223274] Re: Widgets are in square box of background colour

2009-04-16 Thread Thomas K
I believe this is the homepage for the project, if you want to get
involved with it: http://code.google.com/p/gtk-qt-engine/

I guess it's marked as low priority here because the default for Jaunty
seems to have been switched to Qtcurve (at least, it switched for me
during upgrade), so people won't see it unless they specifically set it
to use gtk-qt-engine.

without leaving ugly artefacts. (This is a workaround, not a fix)

[Bug 359534] Re: amarok not accessible from K-menu

2009-04-11 Thread Thomas K
The Amarok menu icon is still working for me (following upgrade from
Intrepid).

Things to look at:
- Is that the only Amarok icon in the menu? Try going to Applications, then
Multimedia. If there's another one that works, add it to your favourites, and
remove the dud.
- Uninstall Amarok (for maximum effect, sudo aptitude purge amarok), then
reinstall it (sudo aptitude install amarok or via kpackagekit), and see if it
works.
- Go into menu editor (right click on the menu button, then click menu editor)
and find the page for Amarok--in my (working) system, the command it has stored
is: amarok %U

[Bug 359491] Re: Not possible to configure IP manually in kubuntu Jaunty

2009-04-11 Thread Thomas K
I saw the same thing. I think it runs in prefix format, according to:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid/+source/network-manager-applet/+bug/293749/+viewstatus

In short, 24 is the equivalent of 255.255.255.0. I can confirm that
it will store the number 24.

The general usability of setting up for a static IP address is naff: for
example, when you click add, the first screen is about MAC address and
MTU size, both of which 99% of users will never want to change. You
enter IP addresses in a list, although you generally only need one,
while DNS servers, where it's common practice to have two, are in a
single textbox, and you are left to work out for yourself that a comma-
separated list is expected.

I suggest we generalise this bug to be about all of this rather rough
UI.

installation.

A bit of searching turned up this page, which describes a similar problem when
HPLIP was moving from python 2.4 to 2.5 (scroll down to the section entitled
Fixing the hplip package):
http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/HowTo/UnslungScanWithHPLIP

I can confirm that changing PyUnicodeUCS2 to PyUnicodeUCS4 as that page
suggests does allow the hp-* programs to run.

[Bug 349781] [NEW] hplip not working after jaunty upgrade

2009-03-27 Thread Thomas K
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hplip

After upgrading to Jaunty, the HP (hp-systray, -toolbox, -check...) programs
refuse to start, with an error message:
warning: CUPSEXT could not be loaded. Please check HPLIP installation.

Debugging reveals that the scripts are failing to import the file
/usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/cupsext.so (in the package hplip), with
the error message: undefined symbol: PyUnicodeUCS2_Decode. Individual
programs can be rescued by running them in python 2.5 (rather than 2.6),
but since they call each other via dbus, that gets rather fiddly.

System is already up to date with python 2.6.1-1ubuntu5.1, and I am

Kubuntu has moved to KDE4 for Intrepid onwards, so there will be no need to
revert (D3lphin is the KDE3 version of dolphin, a mainly KDE4 program, which
works fine). In the mean time, konqueror is still there in Hardy if you want

Re: [Bug 15372] Re: Huge hard drive activity after resuming from S3 suspend on a IBM x31

2009-01-14 Thread Thomas K
That didn't work, unfortunately--apparently there wasn't a .service file
providing that name to dbus.

I did, however, try with sudo /etc/acpi/sleep.sh, and I could replicate the
behaviour (or at least, something that looked the same).

This time, I noticed an error in the terminal about Hardware clock contains
an invalid time, cannot set system clock from it. (searching on google
suggests this is not a common error, assuming I remembered it correctly). On
rebooting into Windows, I found that I was in 2044. I may not have mentioned
it, but last time I had a similar issue that left me in 1908. All I need now
is a Delorian. I guess that the hardware clock goes wrong somewhere (whether
this is a hardware problem or something in the sleep routine, I don't know),
Linux rejects that as being clearly silly, but Windows accepts it and copies
it to the system time (Linux then accepted 1908 after rebooting from
Windows, but I set 2044 back in Windows before rebooting).

I hope that the clock thing is peripheral to the thrashing issue,
however.

Of course, I'd forgotten that Windows IFS drivers can't mount a dirty ext3
filesystem, but happily I have a memory stick with DSL lying around. I've
attached /var/log/dmesg from when I did a hard restart during the thrashing.
I made a copy of the whole of /var/log/, so if you need any more information
from that, please let me know.

Andres, I tried to follow your instructions to get dmesg, but it didn't
reach any sort of usable state after resuming from hibernation, and either
that, or the hard shutdown I had to do while it was locked up, broke X

Windows to search the web), but I'm not keen to try that again. Let me know

[Bug 285400] Re: gtk-qt-engine does not load, GTK apps themed as default

2008-10-31 Thread Thomas K
The package doesn't work without those dependencies, so what's the point
in shipping it at all? It only offers an option in system settings which
won't do anything (and will therefore confuse users--I notice one
duplicate bug already).

Surely, if it doesn't fit on the CD, leave it off, remake the
dependency, and get users to install it (at least it's the logical thing
to install to get Qt styles in GTK). For the best experience, perhaps
provide the panel in system settings with a note saying something like
to use KDE styles in GTK applications, install the gtk-qt-engine
package (click here to do it now)

[Bug 285400] Re: gtk-qt-engine does not load, GTK apps themed as default

2008-10-23 Thread Thomas K
Hmmm, I tried that, but I didn't see any change. Perhaps I should have
restarted. This definitely worked before without installing a lot of
GNOME libraries, but I don't know what packages were installed. Maybe it
will work with just libbonoboui2-common--I'll give that a try.

[Bug 285400] Re: gtk-qt-engine does not load, GTK apps themed as default

2008-10-23 Thread Thomas K
Looking at the dependencies on the website, it seems that gtk-qt-engine
in Hardy didn't depend on libbonoboui2.0, but gtk-qt-engine-kde4 (which
is effectively what we have in Intrepid) did.

However, the clearest problem is that gtk-qt-engines in Intrepid has no
dependencies listed at all:

2008-10-20 Thread Thomas K
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 285400 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/285400

Not a duplicate--this is about the settings, whereas #285400 is a
problem with the actual theme engine.

On this one: Setting to Use another style: Qt4 is the same as setting
to Use my KDE style... (at least in KDE4), so while it's a minor
feature request to avoid confusing people, it's not a particularly
serious problem. If anything, Qt4 should probably be taken out of that
list.

[Bug 285400] [NEW] gtk-qt-engine does not load, GTK apps themed as default

2008-10-18 Thread Thomas K
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gtk-qt-engine

Just upgraded to Kubuntu Intrepid from Hardy KDE4 version. GTK apps
(Firefox, Pidgin) appear in the default blocky style, rather than being
rendered by gtk-qt-engine. The panel in systemsettings appears to work
fine, and I've fiddled around with resetting the option there to no
avail.

There are no error dialogs, and starting pidgin from a terminal did not
produce anything on stdout.

Apt-cache reports gtk-qt-engine is at 1:1.1+svn20080816-0ubuntu5

[Bug 257408] Re: CSS works improperly

2008-09-27 Thread Thomas K
I think Mozilla developers would probably argue that it's poor website
design to set your font size that small. Nonetheless, the idea of a
minimum zoom level is an interesting one, at least in my opinion.

However, I don't think this bug is the place to raise it, now. I'm going to set
this bug as invalid. If you want to pursue the idea of a minimum zoom level
further you could:
-File a new bug for a wishlist item on firefox, although I wouldn't recommend
this--the bug tracking system is designed for, well, bugs, not features you'd
like, and in any case, Ubuntu doesn't design firefox.
-File a wishlist bug for Firefox upstream (after checking no-one else has
already).
-Forums (Ubuntu or Mozilla)
-Ubuntu brainstorm.

[Bug 148720] Re: kontact hangs on start, uses almost all CPU

2008-09-25 Thread Thomas K
Well, we know what caused the immediate problem, and my guess is that if
you were to set an LDAP server up as a resource, it may well do the same
thing (I can't access my LDAP server until I'm back at uni in a bit over
a week, so I can't test). But we don't know what it was that turned an
LDAP server entry in Feisty into a KDE resource in Gutsy, which I'd
consider the real bug. Hopefully it was something specific to that
upgrade.

I'm planning to upgrade to Intrepid when it is in beta, so hopefully
I'll be able to test then.

[Bug 274589] Re: Gnome bug in Fedora

2008-09-25 Thread Thomas K
Hi Keval

This is actually a system for dealing with bugs in Ubuntu. For Fedora bugs,
visit their bug system at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/. You should also check
that:
a) No-one else has already reported it. If they have, just add any extra
information to that.
b) It's a real bug, and it's replicable. Killing processes can cause unexpected
behaviour, so work out what process it was that you killed--if it was something
key, then you would expect it to crash.

[Bug 257408] Re: CSS works improperly

2008-09-24 Thread Thomas K
I'd guess that that's a problem with the website, rather than with
Firefox. It will only have been designed to be viewed at it's proper
size.

When you're zooming into the page, it's zooming into the whole page, so
it stays in proportion--if you set zoom text only to on, it will go
funny again.

The issue with the small fonts does sound like a problem, though. Is
that only in Firefox, or in other programs? What default font size is
set in Firefox (mine is 16).

In an ironic twist, after the fiddling around I did on my computer, the
text on the BFCU website is now in the wrong place for me. And I've
checked the settings that caused the problem for you...

Nope, I see more or less what you see in Windows. The only method I've
found to replicate that problem is the one I described above, and then I
can resolve it either by resetting the zoom (Ctrl+0), or by unselecting
Zoom text only.

I notice that, in your Ubuntu screenshot, the page is rendered in a
serif font, whereas on my computer (and on Windows, for you), it's
rendered in a sans-serif font. Can you go to Firefox's preferences (in
Ubuntu), content, fonts advanced, and see what settings you have
there. I've tried making my default font bigger and disabling Allow
pages to choose their own fonts, but it didn't seem to affect that
page.

[Bug 257408] Re: CSS works improperly

2008-08-12 Thread Thomas K
I initially thought this was 'works for me', but I've found out how to
reproduce it:
-From view, zoom, ensure that Zoom text only is checked
-Zoom in to page (Ctrl++ or Ctrl+MouseWheelUp)
-Scroll down

I suspect a lot of pages go a bit funny if you enlarge the text. While
we can probably argue backwards and forwards about whether it's a bug in
Firefox, a mistake in the CSS, or just a casualty of war, I'd suggest
that in the meantime, you either view the page at it's native size
(Ctrl+0 (that's a numeric zero)), or use Firefox's default zoom mode to
scale in on the whole page (View, Zoom, ensure Zoom text only is
*un*checked). In both of those cases, it Works For Me.

[Bug 251887] Re: FF3 Crashes with 13 active downloads

2008-08-02 Thread Thomas K
Hmmm. You're welcome to try with FF2, but otherwise, if we can't work
out how the error occurred, there's not a lot we can do. It may have
been quietly solved by an update in the meantime.

Sorry it's taken me a while to respond.

[Bug 251894] Re: E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

2008-07-26 Thread Thomas K
Converting to a question.

If the dpkg cache is indeed corrupted, you may be able to fix it by
running sudo dpkg --configure -a

[Bug 243843] Re: Cannot view any maps on maps.google.com

2008-07-26 Thread Thomas K
Setting to invalid, as this is most likely a problem with the TrackMeNot
addon.

[Bug 252087] Re: Firefox opens tiny window instead of web page

Can you use a new profile, as described here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MozillaTeam/Bugs#head-
fa398dbbff0621c74659f3a1303dfde9b46f221b

and see if it still has the problem?

[Bug 252051] Re: package flashplugin-nonfree 9.0.124.0ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade: il sottoprocesso post-installation script ha restituito un codice di errore 1

2008-07-26 Thread Thomas K
This is the same as someone previously saw trying to upgrade to
flashplugin 10 beta, in bug 247634.

It appears it now affects flashplugin 9 as well.

Presumably, if you single-click, it just loads one instance of the
application?
