[Bug 582822] [NEW] Battery charge information completely unreliable

2010-05-19 Thread clovepower
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

gnome-power-manager:
  Installed: 2.30.0-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 2.30.0-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 2.30.0-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://it.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

On my Acer 5520 running Lucid, when the PC starts I get a battery old
or broken warning every time I log in.

Furthermore, when running on batteries, the discharge time indicated by
the power manager icon is random (starts from 40min, then goes to 50,
then down again). In the process, it might be the random value hits the
low-limit threshold, so I get a warning that batteries are low and/or
THE PC SHUTS DOWN.

Finally, the batteries seem to last much less than usual (about 1 hour
against the usual 2 and an half hours).

This is all new in Ubuntu Lucid, batteries were working great in Karmic
and lasting longer than Hardy.

[Bug 582829] [NEW] GeForce 7000M / nForce 610M does not work properly in Lucid

2010-05-19 Thread clovepower
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-common

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
Linux 2.6.32-22-generic #33-Ubuntu

Nvidia driver version: 195.36.15

When installing Lucid, I choose to use proprietary Nvidia drivers.

After rebooting, I got an error message that X server was not configured
properly and the PC could run only on low resolution.

The workaround is:

1) Disable propriety drivers

2) Edit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and add this to the end:

blacklist vga16fb
blacklist nouveau
blacklist rivafb
blacklist nvidiafb
blacklist rivatv

3) Reboot

4) Enable proprietary drivers and run

sudo nvidia-xconfig

TWICE (the first time you ger an error).

5) Reboot.

[Bug 39717] Re: When guest (nobody) account exists, smbpasswd should default to none

2009-03-25 Thread clovepower
I'm not that inexperienced of a user (from my point of view :)) but I
stumbled on this issue as well.

Since the right-click Share menu brings up a nice GUI that even
installs services if required, nobody will ever think of opening a
console right away to create a Samba user. One expects the configuration
to be made by the GUI.

I agree there should be an option to create a User in the GUI or let
user choose anonymous access.

2009-03-23 Thread clovepower
@Mackenzie

Thanks a lot for the quick and clear reply.

I'm a bit confused though about the bug fix process.

What is the difference between a LTS and a regular version of Ubuntu if
bugs are fixed only in the current release?

I've spoken with many people but I'm still very confused about how bug
fix and package updates workis there a link you can point me to that
explains the whole process?

Anyway, thanks, I do hope to see this fix soon in Hardy :-)

[Bug 270395] Re: cannot resolve windows host name

2009-03-15 Thread clovepower
Actually if I go to Windows and do

ping Windows Host Name

it works, and if I do

ping Linux Laptop Name

it works too.

IMHO I think that most, if not all, Ubuntu users will sooner or later
plug their laptop into a LAN and they will expect to see other PCs,
hence this bug somehow will need to be addressed either fixing winbind
or with some other voodoo.

I think this is such a basic feature that WON'T FIX is inappropriate

[Bug 269294] Re: Acer Aspire 5520 cannot record sound with HDA-Intel NVidia Codec ALC268

2009-03-15 Thread clovepower
Thanks Andres for the info.

I was finally able to test with Jaunty alpha 5 Linux ubuntu
2.6.28-8-generic #26-Ubuntu SMP Wed Feb 25 04:27:53 UTC 2009 x86_64
GNU/Linux, and with:

snd-hda-intel model=acer-aspire

I was able to record sound. The issue is now that Record from input:
option in Sound Recorder does not provide a way to use the internal mic
(the one with Crystal Eye webcam), I only have Mic Boost, Capture
and Digital. Recording sound from the mic jack now works though.

Note also that with:

snd-hda-intel model=acer
snd-hda-intel model=acer-dmic

I get nothing (mute) when recording.

So, a step forward but still not 100% there :-)

2009-03-14 Thread clovepower
This is confirmed with

Ubuntu Jaunty alpha5 AMD64

samba 2:3.3.0-3ubuntu2

and no, I do not have any DNS server on my LAN.

I cannot try the above fix because Synaptic fails when installing
winbind (404 file not found), but still I'm not able to do:

ping host

Notice that if I open Nautilis to smb://host/ I can see shared folder
on my Windows host, so in such a case the name is resolved correctly.

[Bug 342169] [NEW] tsclient - curly brackets in Italian keyboard do not work

2009-03-13 Thread clovepower
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tsclient

Ubuntu Hardy 8.04.1 AMD64
Linux set 2.6.24-23-generic #1 SMP Mon Jan 26 01:04:16 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux

tsclient 0.150-1ubuntu1

I use a laptop PC with an Italian keyboard to connect to a remote
Windows box using tsclient. On the remote box, I've chosen to use
Italian keyboard layout.

The keyboard works for most of the keys but curly braces do not.

To obtain curly braces on an Italian keyboard you must enter these
combos:

shift + alt gr + è
shift + alt gr + +

respectively.

Note that square brackets work:

alt gr + è
alt gr + +

Note also that using mstsc under Vista, the braces work, so it does not
seem to be an issue of keyboard shading for long keys combos.

[Bug 269294] Re: Acer Aspire 5520 cannot record sound with HDA-Intel NVidia Codec ALC268

I tried to perform the above test with latest alpha Live CD (jaunty

Linux ubuntu 2.6.28-8-generic #26-Ubuntu SMP Wed Feb 25 04:27:53 UTC

but when I try, I get the following error:

ubu...@ubuntu:/etc/modprobe.d$ sudo modprobe -r snd-hda-intel
FATAL: Module snd_hda_intel is in use.

Also, when I try to record sound now I hear no more crackles but the
audio is completely muted.

I tried to set up different sources for sound capture but I get only the
option Capture shown in the screen shot.

I also ran the alsa-info.sh script and results can be found here:

[Bug 269294] Re: Acer Aspire 5520 cannot record sound with HDA-Intel NVidia Codec ALC268

2009-03-04 Thread clovepower
Andres Mujica:

Adding ubuntu-studio and -plugins (under 8.04) causes a set of programs
and libraries to be installed, these seem to depend on a special version
of the kernel which is also installed, overwriting the current settings.
Anyway, I'll pay more attention next time.

Mackenzie Morgan:

As I wrote, I can test with a live CD but:

1) I need detailed info on what to do for the test, otherwise all I can
do is start the CD and see if the mic automagically works, this is
hardly the case since most alpha or beta CDs are not even able to
correctly boot on my laptop, not to mention loading all the proper
drivers. I saw you now listed a couple commands to type, I'll be glad to
try them as soon as I get a chance.

2) As I wrote before I'm using Hardy Heron that is a LTS, I'd expect the
issue to be fixed on that version of the OS, without the need to update
until the next LTS. Not sure if this will be the case.

I tried the live CD for 8.10 AMD64 and Linux Ubuntu 2.6.27-7-generic

I could not really complete the test, since Sound Recorder hangs when I

supposed to be supported for some time still.

[Bug 282589] Re: When adding a Pidgin buddy from Evolution contacts wrong protocol type is used

2009-01-15 Thread clovepower
The computer I'm using is used for production, so it runs LTS
distributions only.

Beside, I would like to see this issue fixed in 8.04, since this is
supposed to be still supported.

That said, I can do the test if you say it's possible using the live CD.

To Giorgio and cally:

This is NOT a Privoxy issue, I edited the files manually already and

The issue is Tor or TorButton relatedI'll take some time to dig into
TOR config eventually.

Hi Jean, just to be sure we have same hardware config, can you please
download and run this script:

http://alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh

it will produce an URL like the one I pasted above with all technical
info regarding your configuration.

If you post the link the ALSA team will know which version of the
drivers is still not working.

Thanks a lot in advance.

[Bug 269294] Re: Acer Aspire 5520 cannot record sound

2008-11-17 Thread clovepower
Since this is a production machine and it's meant to run LTS distros, I
can do it in two cases:

1) There is a Live CD with the version you want me to try or there is a
procedure to start a Live CD, set up drivers for testing and then revert
back to my clean 8.04

2) There is a .deb with latest drivers i an install with Synaptic over
my 8.04 and eventually uninstall if they causes troubles.

I'm not confident enough with building drivers from scratch and
installing them.

Please let me know if I can help, and point me to the corresponding
documentation/procedures

[Bug 241609] Re: Firefox 3 bookmarks lost after unclean shutdown

2008-11-10 Thread clovepower
Happened to me today as well.

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.0.3) Gecko/2008092510
Ubuntu/8.04 (hardy) Firefox/3.0.3

Ubuntu 8.04.1 AMD64 Desktop Linux set 2.6.24-21-generic

No bookmarks, empty bookmark bar, and any attempt to restore it (form
firefox backup or JSON file) failed.

This was NOT after a unclean shutdown, as I shout off Ubuntu using
shutdown button.

I'm NOT using NFS as far as I can tell.

I was NOT out of disk space in /home.

To solve the issue, I copied my .mozilla/firefox folder, deleted old
one, and copied the copy back.

This is a serious bug that should be addressed IMHO since the regular
user who sees his bookmarks disappear will (and rightly) panic.

I'm available to provide any info you need.

[Bug 293660] [NEW] tsclient always tries to reconnect

2008-11-04 Thread clovepower
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tsclient

tsclient 0.150-1ubuntu1

Ubuntu 8.04.1 AMD64 Desktop Linux set 2.6.24-21-generic

When I connect to a Windows XP box and I choose log off my session is
closed on the Windows side but soon after tsclient tries to reconnect
and re-opens it if I do not stop it, which is rather annoying.

tsclient should try to re-open a connection only if it dropped because
of a network failure and not because the user required to be
disconnected.

I realize it might not be possible to distinguish between the two cases
from tsclient, but then at least a check box to disable this behavior
should be provided. I would find much less annoying to reconnect on an
error than to stop ts from reconnecting each time.

[Bug 286270] [NEW] Acer Aspire 5520 wireless activity LED indicator does not work

2008-10-20 Thread clovepower
Public bug reported:

Wireless activity LED indicator on Acer Aspire 5520 laptop does not
work, it stays off all the time.

This can be fixed by entering following rows in /etc/rc.local

sysctl -w dev.wifi0.ledpin=3
sysctl -w dev.wifi0.softled=1

as explained here:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/AcerAspire5520#WirelessLed

[Bug 282589] [NEW] When adding a Pidgin buddy from Evolution contacts wrong protocol type is used

2008-10-13 Thread clovepower
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

pidgin 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu2.1

Ubuntu 8.04.1 AMD64 Linux set 2.6.24-19-generic

I've several accounts in Pidgin with different protocols. When I add a
new buddy by choosing

Buddies Add Buddies

it brings up an Add Buddy dialog that gives me the option to browse
one of my Evolution address books for a buddy. The dialog however does
not let me choose which Pidgin protocol should be used to add the buddy
and it does not appear to be able to detect it properly. In my case, I
choose a contact which has a only one MSN account specified (and as such
is shown in Add Buddy dialog) but he's added as a new AIM buddy.

If in the Add Buddy dialog you click New Person, the New Person
dialog correctly contains an Account type field to choose account
type.

1. Open Evolution
2. Add a new contact, enter a valid MSN address under Instant Messaging (and
only that)
3. Open Pidgin, make sure you have accounts under different protocols (AIM and
MSN in my case)
4. Choose Buddies Add Buddies and choose the newly added Evolution contact

The buddy is not added to Pidgin with MSN protocol (it uses AIM in my case)
Protocol type should be automatically be MSN, or an option to specify a
protocol type should be given

** Affects: pidgin (Ubuntu)

 Status: New

[Bug 273027] Re: Torbutton say it is using Tor but it isn't

2008-10-07 Thread clovepower
OK, one issue was that Privoxy when installed is NOT configured to use
TOR.

After I followed install instructions for Privoxy as explained here:

http://www.torproject.org/docs/tor-doc-unix.html.en

I can use TOR but ONLY if I enable Privoxy manually by configuring
Firefox proxy settings (as shown in the previous screen shot).

I'm not sure what is the best course of action with this, if this is
intentional Privoxy behavior and should be left as it is, if I should
enter a bug or what. Please advise on this. IMHO when installing
torbutton form synaptic, it should also install tor and privoxy properly
configured, but I can be wrong.

Still, if I click on torbutton and enable it, I am now hanging on each
page I try to visit and I get a blanc tab as shown in included screen
shot.

[Bug 273027] Re: Torbutton say it is using Tor but it isn't

2008-10-07 Thread clovepower
OK, Just to throw some insights into this.

I've removed torbutton add-on and manually instructed Firefox to use
privoxy (as you can see in the included screen shot).

Still, it appears I'm not using TOR while browsing.

If I'll have some time today, I'll try to check TOR and Privoxy
configuration (I'm new to Ubuntu so this might take some time :-))

2008-10-07 Thread clovepower
Thanks Giorgio, that basically reflects the changes I made to get
privoxy to work, still enabling torbutton gives me a blank tab.

I'm thinking about entering a bug/change request to turn torbutton
into a meta-package that installs all the 3 components together and
configure them properly.

[Bug 273027] Re: Torbutton does not install

2008-10-06 Thread clovepower
OK, here is how to reproduce second part of the issue:

1. Open Synaptic and install torbutton-extension, privoxy and tor

2. Open Firefox 3, torbutton is not showing (as already noticed)

3. Close Firefox

4. Open Synaptic, choose torbutton-extension and choose Mark for
Complete Removal and uninstall it

5. Open Firefox, go to Tools Add Ons, search for torbutton extension
and install it. Restart Firefox as requested.

6. hen Firefox opens again, Torbutton will show on status bar, click on
it so Torbutton Enabled appears in green

7. Hit http://check.torproject.net/, you will see that torbutton is not
enabled

Try to navigate to other sites, you should be able to go everywhere and
you will see Tor is obviously not used, even if Tor Enabled appears.
Sometimes you can experience hangs during navigation.

I checked and I've Torbutton 1.2.0 installed.

3. Enter contact full name and email address. WHEN TYPING THE EMAIL
ADDRESS PUT A SPACE IN FRONT AND AFTER THE EMAIL.

4. Click OK to close contact dialog and create the contact

5. Click File New Mail message to create a new mail

6. In To: field type the name of the newly created contact.

Evolution will auto-complete the field with the email address you
entered at point 3.

Note that THE LEADING AND TRAILING SPACES WILL BE INCLUDED IN THE EMAIL
ADDRESS BETWEEN ANGLE BRACKETS. This will cause SMTP servers to reject
the address (it happens with gmail servers for sure).

When user enters leading and trailing spaces in contacts email
addresses, these should be stripped away by the program.

It's good programming practice to always strip leading and trailing

[Bug 269294] Re: Acer Aspire 5520 internal microphone does not work

As written above with Ibex is even worse.

I tested Intepid Ibex alpha-6 with following results:

1. If I record using Mic Boost or Internal Mic Boos, I've no sound

2. If I record using Capture I get only cracks, as you can hear in the

I checked volume settings before recording so it should not be a mute

Ubuntu 8.04.1 AMD64

I've installed:

privoxy 3.0.8-1
tor 0.1.2.19-2

from synaptic.

Tor button does not show up in Firefox 3.0.1.

Then, I removed torbutton from synaptic and installed Tor Button from
Firefox extension site. Now Tor button appears in status bar, but it's
not working (it switches from enabled/disabled but the traffic is never
relied to the proxy it seems).

Can provide more debug if required.

[Bug 224498] Re: Acer Aspire 5520 atheros wifi doesnt work (Kernel 2.6.24-19-generic)

2008-09-22 Thread clovepower
I tested Intrepid alpha-6 Live CD and it's NOT working out of the box,
even if HAL is enabled under proprietary drivers.

Is there anything I need to do for have this tested out or is this
supposed to work out-of-the-box?

Just to be safe, I double checked and it works 100% fine with Vista, so
it's NOT an hardware issue.

[Bug 179849] Re: Boinc client fails to resume when set to work only when computer is idle

2008-09-22 Thread clovepower
I've the same issue.

1. Open BOINC manager
2. Go to Advanced Preferences and set options as shown in included screen shot
3. Tasks will stay as Suspended - User active even after 3 minutes of
inactivity are passed

Also, boinc-client appears in my task manager but it never runs (I left
the PC idle a long time and CPU was always at 0%).

I think BOINC is not detecting an idle PC properly.

Ubuntu 8.04.1 AMD64
Linux set 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Wed Aug 20 17:53:40 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux

boinc-client boinc-manager 5.10.45-1ubuntu1

[Bug 263566] Re: Firefox 3: Edit Preferences Advanced Update options disabled

2008-09-20 Thread clovepower
OK, I see the point.

What is confusing is that the settings are set in one way, you change
them and it's no way to revert back...if it's difficult to remove them,
isn't it possible to at least have them disabled by default?

[Bug 263566] Re: Firefox 3: Edit Preferences Advanced Update options disabled

2008-09-20 Thread clovepower
Yes, sorry if I was not clear.

The options are all ENABLED the first time I open the dialog (on a fresh
install), until I click the Ask Me what I want to do radio button. AT
THAT POINT they become disabled.

Hence I found it confusing since it seems you can choose an option only
once in you lifetime and you have no chance of revert back your choice.

[Bug 264650] Re: Kismet launcher missing

2008-09-20 Thread clovepower
Probably doesn't worth the pain since Kismet uses a client/server
approach and the terminal has to be used...

[Bug 191844] Re: QGrubEditor changes the UUID of /root partition if there's an external /boot partition

2008-09-20 Thread clovepower
In my case, I simply changed the boot option name, but QGRUBEditor
changed the Root from (hd2,0) to (hd0,0), this is show in the edit entry
dialog but it's easily overlooked since you are not messing with that
field.

Basically, it appears that when you edit a boot option, QGRUBEditor
reset the Root to hd0,n instead of reading the field from the actual
entry. So if you have the /boot partition on a different primary
partition/HD it will break the boot process.

I'm sorry I cannot be more precise, but I re-organized my HD so I cannot
duplicate it again and go step-by step.

If I'm to fix the bug, I'd double check that when the edit dialog comes
up, it populates the fields using actual entries from menu.lst and does
not use any other hard-coded default.

[Bug 270395] [NEW] cannot resolve windows host name

2008-09-15 Thread clovepower
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 8.04.1 AMD64

Linux set 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Wed Aug 20 17:53:40 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Samba 3.0.28a-1ubuntu4.5

Binary hint samba

I cannot resolve Windws host names for other computers on my LAN.

ping host

where host is a Windows computer name fails.

To fix this I had to:

1) Install winbind

2) manually edit /etc/samba/smb.conf:

#=== Global Settings ===

[global]

name resolve order = lmhosts bcast wins host

3) manually edit /etc/nsswitch.conf

hosts: files dns wins

Since this is an easy fix and since this is definitely an essential feature,
can't these settings be used by default?

GNU/Linux

cheese 2.22.3-0ubuntu1 (could not check newer version b/c libraries are
unavailable)

sudo lsusb -v | grep webcam

Works on the first video I record, then Iàve to restart Cheese to record
