[Bug 936257] Re: the system settings grid shouldn't use a fixed geometry

2014-08-12 Thread jgv
Since 2012 I waited for this issue to be solved in Ubuntu (see my
comments). At last I have given up and therefore I swiched to Linux Mint
Cinnamon. No such problems with scaling at all.

[Bug 841046] Re: GNOME3 misses an option to change the mouse pointer

2014-01-06 Thread jgv
Why is this missue marked as invalid?

Ubuntu still suffers on this subject. Other Linux distributions work
perfectly on this matter (Fedora, Linux Mint, OpenSuse)

As far as I know only Ubuntu is not able to change the mouse pointer.

[Bug 936257] Re: the system settings grid shouldn't use a fixed geometry

2012-02-20 Thread jgv
John,

How right you are. I encounter these problems too. I am trying for years
to get rid of these unnecessary and weird behaviour issues for the
disabled. See e.g. my bug report on the same issue
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/886812 (November 2011) which is in the
mean time marked as a duplicate.

Concerning alacarte I produced two years ago a bug report for this
problem. A fix was made but never implemented in the upstream channel.
Trying to reactivate the item had no results thus far.

Dylan,

See my bug report which I mentioned above.

[Bug 777708] Re: the upgrade button appears too soon

2011-05-08 Thread jgv
I second the proposal above. Many Ubuntu-users today are non-geeks. They
simply follow the suggestions made by the software. I know of numerous
users who are very disappointed if the system breaks after an upgrade or
operates with a different behaviour. Do not underestimate the negative
influence of this experience. Two months and then supported with
accompanying information about the consequences of the upgrade is in my
opinion a good start.

JFo,

On August 12 last year the problem with suspend/resume still existed in the LTS

not used Lucid since then.

[Bug 540192] Re: Button text mess-up in users and groups window

2010-04-13 Thread jgv
Because the new designed Users and Groups window is first introduced in Lucid,
the issue is new with 10.4. So I only can check the themes dust and clearlooks.
The result is however the same. The length of the translated text in those
buttons is still longer than the original English version. With a smaller font
(for me not usable) the button text gets better.
I never met such issue before or elsewhere, because normally the button size
scales up with the used font size.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which
is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper
developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this
bug as a bug in gnome-system-tools.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the
appropriate application's Help - Report a Problem menu or using
'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more
about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

/apps/panel/default_setup/toplevels/bottom_panel/background/stretch true
/apps/panel/default_setup/toplevels/top_panel/background/stretch true

The appearance of the bug has slightly changed.

It does not play music-cd and it does not play data-dvd
Eject does not function properly anymore

This issue seems not to be fixed in beta2.

No, it was just fixed a couple of hours ago. You need to upgrade udev
to version -8.

Metacity/gnome-window-decorator supports .svg, so this is entirely
possible. Besides, having blurry buttons is still better than having
tiny buttons that are next to impossible to click.

SilverWave,
Comment out the bg_pixmap line cause gnome-panel to use solid color, and it is
different from panel_bg.png.
Another way to just use solid color is change the Background from None to
Solid color in Panel Properties.

This is not working for the background color behind items (i.e.
Applications, Places, System) in the panel.
The idea is that non-technical users too could scale up the panels.

[Bug 546373] Re: [LUCID] CD tray close automatically after eject

2010-04-01 Thread jgv
the behavior has changed in that nothing put in the Pioneer DVR-112 now
mounts when booted with either -16 or -17 kernel all that happens is you
see a solid activity light as the disk spins up then a brief pause
before a flashing activity light and when this stops instead

The same issue with Pioneer DVR-212D.

Mounting can be forced by pressing format disk in the Disk Utility.
After an error message the disk is recognized. Appearently the initial
reading of disk fails for some reason. No issue with the same drive and
system in Karmic and prior versions.

[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

2010-03-27 Thread jgv
More or less roughly scanning through this whole debate, one can observe
a vast majority of contributors against this change of the UI with at
least plausible arguments and illustrations. They frequently state to
represent other (less experienced) users. On the other side are a few
very explicit contributors with basicly three arguments pro: distinction
from other OS's, marketing aspects and usability improvements. They make
it themselves very hard by just discussing the opponents arguments as
inferior instead of making their own arguments more plausible for
benefitting the mass. At a side-line there is the Ubuntu leader,
watching and waiting and sometimes throwing minor bones into the crowd.

Re: [Bug 532633] Data that would be interesting

2010-03-26 Thread jgv
If there is no conspiracy, it seems like a desperate act of the
designers to let the community swim in the unknown and then drop some

Yes this is one of the fundamental communication breakdowns between the
closed door design team and the external community. Shuttleworth and
the design team want data.. but they haven't communicated what that
means. Why hasn't that happened? Is the team concerned that the
passionate minority with game the system and heavily bias the data that
is being collected? There hasn't been a general data collecting
methodology articulated for any of the experimental design decisions.
This, more than any individual design decision, is the fundamental
breakdown in communication which risks hardening passionate contributors
in the Ubuntu community against Canonical in leading this work.

Atel, there is no conspiracy involved, nobody is afraid that data would
be biased, because it's clear that all data is somehow biased and will
need to be evaluated in that light. Nevertheless, data would be interesting.

I haven't said what data in particular, because I thought it better to
let people invent for themselves what might be a relevant study. If I
said I want data on X Y and Z we'd get into a long argument about
whether that's the relevant thing. I'd rather folks here had responded
by saying cool, here's some data I gathered.

Since that hasn't happened, some things I'd be interested in:

 - where does the average mouse rest? i.e., when it's not being used,
where is the mouse, usually? Think of a long term heat map of mouse
locations, over a few hundred desktops and a few weeks. That would be
interesting. Lots of people have said My mouse is generally near the
left because there's so much else there. others have said The
scrollbars on the right mean my mouse is hanging out there. Data would
be useful.

 - are there accidental clicks on the close button in the new location?
We know that the new location has lots going on around it. Are people
accidentally clicking the wrong thing?

 - does it take longer to click it in the new location, once one is
moving with intent in the right direction? We know that the fact that
there's a lot around the target means finer motor control is required,
and we know that generally means slower, more careful, more irritating
movements. But is that actually measurably observed?

Those are three items I'd like data on.

But I'm sure there are folks following this conversation who could come
up with smarter and more insightful formulations.

Gesture precision has nothing to do with the left or right side

But it does! Cann't you see that?

Having any buttons on the left-hand side is a problem as long as the
menus for the application are also on the left. Since Ubuntu uses
in-window
menus it is not advisable to have buttons on the left at all.

Please, make allowance for other people, who don't have your skills.

10.10. So on this day March 17th 2010 we all might know where we stand.

Besides that, the community that has responded is not a representative
cross-cut of all Ubuntu users. So I fear the chain reaction after April
forthcoming. How many common Ubuntu users are there working with Windows
as well? How many Ubuntu users do not have a steep learning curve?
Ubuntu was promoted with Ubuntu for everyone and it was!

What I sadly see in this moment is this. Lucid testers already
frustrated about the stability of the current Alpha3 (the worst Ubuntu
Alpha3 in years) now aware that 10.04 will be an experimental LTS will
end their efforts with testing and bug reporting. So the going down
has begun.

[Bug 539390] Re: [ambiance, radiance] Window border and scrollbar-trough gradients are too pronounced

2010-03-17 Thread jgv
As the window title bar has much bigger dimensions comparing to the
scrollbar it is obvious that the scrollbar deserves a more intense
gradient. So no change is needed in my opinion. Subtility and
consistency are subordinated to usability.

Re: [Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close

2010-03-12 Thread jgv
A lot of people use these controls to identify the right edge of the
active window. This is significant when there is more then one window
overlapping each other on the display. The same issue is there with the
window title. When it is centered (as in human) one can know that the
window is stretching to the left side as far as to the right side from
the position of the title. Putting all info to the left gives no
information at all concerning the window dimensions. Do not ignore this
visual aspects. The current window design (until human) did not just
drop from the sky. Someone had good arguments for them, which I cannot
confirm for the light themes.

With these settings I had the problem for 4 hours and the next day when
I started ubuntu I had no problem with the new controls position rather
things look better as there nothing on the top right side. People
complain without even testing the change for a few hours. (Even when a

Re: [Bug 529905] Re: printer configuration error

2010-03-11 Thread jgv
This is what I did:

Updated with de various cups updates as you suggested.

I tested if printer works well with printing various file types. It
does.

cancel -a

Then turn off and turn on the printer. Take an arbitrary PDF file,
convert it to PostScript with Poppler using

pdftops file.pdf

and print the resulting file unfiltered:

lpr -oraw file.ps

I used the attached file Batavia.pdf

The result was the same error message printed as I sent earlier.

Try also a PDF file which you create with the following command:

PPD=/etc/cups/ppd/DCP-7025.ppd /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstopdf 1 1 1 1
PageSize=A4 /usr/share/system-config-printer/testpage-a4.ps
testpage-a4.pdf

This resulted in the next message:

j...@jgv-2007n:~$ PPD=/etc/cups/ppd/DCP-7025.ppd /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstopdf 1
1 1 1
DEBUG: pstopdf 4 args: 1 1 1 1

bash: syntaxfout nabij onverwacht symbool 'newline'
j...@jgv-2007n:~$ testpage-a4.pdf

Both tests repeated twice with the same results.

So far the asked tests. After this I tested the printer again with the
usual printing commands. It works as normal.

Greetings.

Can you do the following test:

You do not need to update foomatic-filters. Run the command

cancel -a

Then turn off and turn on the printer. Take an arbitrary PDF file,
convert it to PostScript with Poppler using

Re: [Bug 529905] Re: printer configuration error

2010-03-10 Thread jgv
This is what I did:

Testing all printing is correct. It is.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install foomatic-filters

The first printjob printed the text normally but ignored the top margin.

Activated debugging information according to:

System - Administration - Printing in the main menu of your
desktop. The printer setup tool system-config-printer will open. Select
Server Settings in the list on the left. Then check the checkbox Save
debugging information for troubleshooting and click Apply.

Printed the same document. Just an errormessage was printed (see
attached scan).
Copied /var/log/cups/error_log and attached it also.

Printed the document again.

The printjob appears in the queu. But printer does not respond. No print
output at all.

After switching off and on the printer, the printer prints once the
error message as attached. Any more printjobs are completely ignored.

I have to reinstall a systembackup for normal printing again.

Printing is as usual. Conclusion: Just the installation of foomatic is
triggering the bug.

Good luck with this info.

However, solution not convenient for normal user.

[Bug 532641] [NEW] window controls do'nt scale up

2010-03-05 Thread jgv
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: light-themes

The minimize, maximize and close buttons in each window do not scale up
sufficiently when bigger fonts are used.

This is very inconvenient for people with a visual or motorial
impairment. Lousy to operate these controls.

This was no issue until Ubuntu 9.10 with the Human theme.

I wonder if it is really the same issue. The bug I reported is about the
foreground colour that is allmost the same as the background colour.

[Bug 529905] [NEW] printer configuration error

2010-03-01 Thread jgv
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cups

After updating various CUPS FOOMATIC changes -a few days ago- my printer
(Brother DCP-7025) is confused. Appearently it ignored the top marging
on printing several text-files. After reinstalling the printer it wo'nt
print at all (not even a testpage) and at other times (after shutting
on/off the printer) it prints a page with just an error message
(configuration error, set page device). After a fresh install of Ubuntu
9.10 with ignoring the proposed CUPS and FOOMATIC updates the printer
works well again as usual.

[Bug 528471] [NEW] suspend resume problem

2010-02-26 Thread jgv
Public bug reported:

While testing Lucid-Alpha-3 the suspend/resume function did not work.

After the suspend command the system shutdown. Pressing the power button the
system (drives) as usual restarted but the monitor did not respond (stand-by
signal). Not even on any keyboard or mouse action.

After a hard reset the system slowly came alive. During boot the system hanged.
After some keyboard entries the log-in screen appeared. However network
connection was shut-off and had to be re-enabled manually.

After several reboots the system appears to be subsequent slow in
booting time. I guess the event caused some system disruption.

The actual configuration (normal desktop i-386) worked fine with suspend/resume
until Ubuntu 9.10

[Bug 323951] [NEW] Printing problem since yesterday in 8.10

2009-02-01 Thread jgv
Public bug reported:

I use Ubuntu 8.10 since november last year. Never had problems with
printing on my Brother DCP-7025. From today there is a problem with the
margins. Every page is printed about 2 cm above the usual position. This
leads to pages cut as if printing with wrong paper configuration though
A4 paper is set everywhere. For example when printing a test page with
the printer configuration tool I cannot see the upper part of the Ubuntu
logo.

I suppose this bug might be related to an update yesterday wth quite a
lot of cups replacements.

Re: [Bug 320890] Re: po_fspot-nl.po error

2009-01-26 Thread jgv
Hello,

Noticed your comment to my problems on translating F-Spot for Ubuntu
8.10.

Sorry, but I was not aware that I used an old .po. I don't know much about
the technical aspects of this. When I started to locate the translation
facilities in Launchpad for 8.10 into Dutch, I was adviced to download this
specific .po last sunday, so that I could translate and test the translation
in my own environment.

Sorry again, but upstream tallball does not mean anyting to me, as I told
you already I am just a rookie .
I just want to make a contribution by translating. On rosetta I can't test
the translation properly.

So if you can help me out???
Kind regards,
John Visser

2009/1/26 Pedro Villavicencio pe...@ubuntu.com

just wondering, why you're downloading an old .po file for translation ?
you should grab the latest one from the upstream tarball or translate
 on rosetta.
