[Bug 103505] Re: [apport] rapidsvn crashed with SIGSEGV in svn::Context::reset()

2008-10-16 Thread Zed
I have a similar problem.
After adding the backports to hardy, and updating, Rapidsvn will do
segmentation fault after I Update/Commit/Bookmark my http/ssl repository. If I
start Rapidsvn after this crash. It will crash with segmentation fault just by
marking the repository. No problem with the command line interface.

This happens both on my 686 and x86_64 systems, with the same repository

[Bug 284349] [NEW] gnome-screensaver segfaults (using x11vnc)

2008-10-16 Thread tabularasa
Public bug reported:

Hello,
i am using nvidia binary drivers on my laptop with 1440x900 resolution, x11vnc
and gnome-screensaver. From time to time gnome-screensaver segfaults, sometimes
the first time i start x11vnc, sometimes after the 10th time i start x11vnc, it
just crashes randomly.

e.g.
[18466.982766] gnome-screensav[28997]: segfault at 0051 eip b7eb1eac esp
bfff1c30 error 4
[18467.804388] gnome-screensav[28998]: segfault at 0051 eip b7f2ceac esp
bfa94ed0 error 4
[18468.005146] gnome-screensav[28999]: segfault at 0051 eip b7e3ceac esp
bfd40170 error 4
[18468.168474] gnome-screensav[29000]: segfault at 0051 eip b7f34eac esp
bfd661a0 error 4
[18468.380084] gnome-screensav[29001]: segfault at 0039 eip b7f04eac esp
bffa03d0 error 4
[18468.534469] gnome-screensav[29002]: segfault at 0051 eip b7e89eac esp
bfc55090 error 4
[18468.702406] gnome-screensav[29003]: segfault at 0051 eip b7e9ceac esp
bfc758b0 error 4

then i have to kill that process to clear the black screen.
Unfortunately, once the gnome-screensaver crashed, it even crashes again
and again, though i restart it. Furthermore the attached debug messages
aren't the ones after the first crash, hopefully this doesn't make any
difference.

[Bug 284346] [NEW] Properly fix dithering problems

2008-10-16 Thread Fabio Pedretti
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

Currently the xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.9.0+git20081003.f9826a56-0ubuntu2 is
shipping two patches to workaround dithering problem on some cards. I suggest
to update to current git version which has proper fixes for this problems:
* RV530 on MacBook Pro
 + bug #264535
 + https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17897
 + the current upstream fix has the following advantages over current ubuntu
103_rv530_enable_diethering.patch:
  - it fixes completely the problem (the ubuntu patch still leaves some
banding);
  - it is targetting only RV530 on MacBook Pro (where there is the dithering
problem), not all RV530;
  - it makes the 103_rv530_enable_diethering.patch useless making the ubuntu
packages more inline with supported upstream;
 + I tested current git version and noticed no regression so far
* RV6xx/RV7xx cards:
 + https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17094
 + current git version should also fix this problem in a similar way, though I
don't own this hardware to test; it should have the following advantages:
  - it should fix completely the problem (the ubuntu patch appears to leave
some banding);
  - it has a more general approach targetting not only specified cards;
  - it makes the 101_rv635_enable_dithering.patch useless making the ubuntu
packages more inline with supported upstream;

Current git version (2008-10-15 commit
435cf7da68186f2601c4b888296117d4f652c625) has 9 commits more than current
ubuntu version:
 - 8 commits related to the dithering problems;
 - 1 cleanup commit renaming some function;

I suggest to update the ubuntu version to current git to properly fix
the dithering problems.

Test packages provided by Tormod Volden can be found at:
https://edge.launchpad.net/~tormodvolden/+archive

[Bug 284071] Re: When tabing past the send and recieve button in Evolution I am put back on the desktop rather than being able to tab around through Evolution.

2008-10-16 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
 We have instructions on debugging some types of problems.
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 279519] Re: [regression] some usb devices don't works after upgrade to intrepid

2008-10-16 Thread Luca Ferretti
Small update on MTP portable mp3 player: the issue seems unrealated with
kernel, most problably something in libmtp or libgphoto or gvfs.

I suggest so 'cause I logged in my jhbuild GNOME sandbox[1], it tryed to
connect my MPT player, a Samsung YP-T10, and it works, either in
rhythmbox either in nautilus/gvfs.

I'm specifying it's a Samsung YP-T10 'cause in jhbuild sandbox I'm using
libmtp 0.3.3 installed under /opt/gnome2; this version has a fix for
this specific model. Ubuntu instead provides libmtp 0.3.0. I think could
be a good idea update this package in ubuntu due to the lot of fixes
(creative players too, see[2])

However, gvfs in jhbuild sandbox is linked against libgphoto provided by
Ubuntu system. This is strange: both gvfs installed (/usr from ubuntu
packages and /opt/gnome2 from svn) should be able to recongnize, mount
and manage the player, but only the jhbuild sandbox works (any ubuntu-
only patch against gvfs?)

I'll attach a `rhythmbox --debug` dump from both version. In the
meantime, could someone try to provide an Ubuntu libmptp package updated
to latest version?

Re: [Bug 221953] Re: Ubuntu Installation failure to mount drives

2008-10-16 Thread Bruce R
For Ubuntu '8.04' (actually 8.04.1) it still doesn't automatically remember
mounted drive icons as per Ubuntu 7.10
Ubuntu 8.10 Beta (kernel 2.6.27-4-generic) has delayed ReStart or ShutDown
problems, not fixed by updated kernel 2.6.27-7-generic and also does not
automatically remember mounted drive icons.
HOWEVER, my work-around works in all three cases.
Using only NTFS logical hard drives for data storage and then Adding the
'NTFS Configuration Tool' and running it, one can select those NTFS drives
which creates desktop icons that do get remembered after a restart.
Unfortunately, unlike LinuxMint 4 or 5 there's no 'Home' folder icon.

display to a one monitor display and back to a two monitor display, the
tooltip windows (alternative text) and suggestion list windows in

Then unplug, then:

xrandr --output VGA --off

then back to two screens:

[Bug 284279] [NEW] Intrepid: Since update, Evolution has a problem with mail distribution lists

2008-10-16 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution-exchange

Testing with a company Exchange server which has a Global Address Book
on it with pre-defined mail distribution lists (i.e. you would send an
email to AEW if you want to send it to all electricity workers).

Since some update a while ago, Evolution has started to resolve these
mail distribution lists' abbreviations, i.e. when you send a mail to
AEW, each receiver will get a mail with ALL receivers' names in the
To: field, if if it be quite a number of recipients. This looks quite
strange and makes the handling of emails bad for the recipients.

[Bug 283155] Re: update-manager crashed with InvalidURL in _set_hostport()

2008-10-16 Thread Chris Fleming
After some more digging around, it looks like this is a proxy config
issue. I found that apt proxy setting was completly wonky:

cat /etc/apt/apt.conf
Acquire::http::Proxy http://http://web-proxy.britain.agilent.com/:8088/;;

If I delete or fix this then everything is okay.

I *think* this must have been automagically set by something when I
first installed Hardy on my PC.

The only question is should the update manager check that the source
it's using for proxy information is in the correct format before
deciding to use it?

[Bug 284242] [NEW] Intrepid Ibex: Other User Login Password works with New User

2008-10-16 Thread Kyle M Weller
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

Woah this is a big security issue, I dont know how this happened but
basically I deleted user defcon on my system and created a user ionstorm
and ionstorm can login with defcon's password as well as ionstorm's

I am able to login with both user passwords on 1 account, all I did was
go into edit users/groups and delete user defcon and ionstorm can login
with both passwords.

The only thing that may help solve this is that I have ecryptfs-setup-
private installed, this may have caused the issue, how do I submit
information with my passwords being secure?

3) Type bwm and insert the first clipart into your document (the picture of a

4) Save your document and close inkscape
5) Clean your /tmp folder by rm /tmp/*.png and rm /tmp/*.svg (it can also
be done by a simple reboot)
6) Open your document with inkscape : the picture is replaced by a red cross

This is a pretty serious bug as it makes the use of openclipart completely

It's most definitely a 'wishlist' type of item! There are far more
important things out there. I did find it irritating enough to file a
report about, though.

I also discovered that it's possible to use the program directly from
the command line with the name of the file I want to send, even though
the man page doesn't tell you this.

[Bug 283790] Re: no sound after update to 2.6.24-21-generic

2008-10-16 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Solved with adjusted Dell work around.

Zenith:

thanks for your link to the Dell workaround, which otherwise would be
very hard to find.

I did adjust the procedure for upgrading to kernel 2.6.24-21-generic

Restore name of sound driver that old modem driver renamed:
$ cd /lib/modules/2.6.24-21-generic/ubuntu/sound/alsa-driver/pci/hda
$ sudo mv snd-hda-intel.ko.REPLACEDBYhsfmodem snd-hda-intel.ko

Remove old sound drivers from kernel module directory:

$ cd /lib/modules/2.6.24-21-generic/updates
$ sudo rm snd-hda-intel.ko
$ sudo rm snd-hda-codec.ko

Rebuild initrd and reboot:

$ sudo depmod -a
$ sudo update-initramfs -u
$ sudo reboot

This brought back my sound working.

Thanks a lot,

Frank

[Bug 284351] [NEW] [Intrepid Beta] Kernel not found (not installed)

2008-10-16 Thread Pablo Castellano
Public bug reported:

I have just made a clean install of Intrepid (rsynced a few hours ago).

The installation finishes correctly but when I want to boot on ubuntu, grub
says 'File not found' (referring to /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27-7-generic).
I have installed it using Wubi but I don't think it's specific to it.

Then I have rebooted under ubuntu hardy and I have mounted root.disk.
There wasn't any file under /boot

It seems like the kernel package hasn't been installed. So, IMO it's
critical.

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2008-10-16 Thread ^rooker
Just wanted to add 3 things:

1) Yesterday I was surprised to find out that webplanetcomputer.com sells
computers with Ubuntu Hardy preinstalled on them. Unfortunately, they don't
mention this *at all* on their website. You can't even select it as OS if you
want to - but if you select none you get Ubuntu.
To be optimized, but still: going in the right direction!

2) Hardware support:
Yes. This indeed sucks, but it's not a problem of Free Software (we all know
that). The more people use Free Software, the more vendors will notice and
sooner or later will have to deal with supporting it.

3) @X3:
There are a few things I can't agree with you, but I think we're still on the
same page so let's just keep it short:
Endorcing proprietary formats and applications (as you suggest), would not
really make Linux better. In fact, it would make it worse, because you'd tear
all the negative aspects of closed-n-proprietary development into our
environment.

It might seem like a boost for a moment, but not on the long run. Free
Software *is* the superior development method with win-win for
everyone (if done right). Proprietary is not an option - it *is* the
problem (unfortunately).

Re: [Bug 271618] Re: nvidia graphics card error when you install drivers

2008-10-16 Thread Hal Lamborn
10-16-2008

1) the sudo command did not work - see screenshot attached
2) I have the nvidia drivers uninstalled now so the screen looks ok
3) should I re-install the nvidia drivers then
try the ammended command again ?
4) by log file did you mean the .conf file I just sent to you?

I will await more instructions...

I opened the .conf file with gedit just to see what was in there, that
is my copy of it not the one in use.

BTW, I have used this monitor in the past with another PC which had dual boot
RedHat
Win ME without any problems or any need to reset each time I boot to either OS.
I'[m a newbie to Xubuntu but have had exposure to Red Hat and HP UX in the past.

[Bug 284262] [NEW] Cannot access /dev/noz* devices

2008-10-16 Thread hlibrenz
Public bug reported:

Because of a bug in nozomi module for 64bit system in Ubuntu 8.04's
kernels I've waited for Ubuntu 8.10 to use my Option 3G+ PCMCIA card
(T-Mobile card, O2 Germany SIM card, card works on Windows).

Now, the card is recognized right and the module initializes complete. I've
tested it in one of the alpha releases (sorry, can't remember which one) and it
works with vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver-for-linux and umtsmon (means, it
was recognized...). I'm using the Ubuntu 8.10 beta now and the network-manager
let me configure an UMTS connection. But I can't use the card for surfing.
Everytime I want to start the connection, the network manager prompts me the
message Connection was closed (sorry, don't know real english message cause
I use the German edition). If I try it with
vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver-for-linux or umtsmon, the tools messages
that they can't use the /dev/noz0 device.
The device is available, the user is in dialout group - but also started as
root the tools can't use the device!

Here is a snippet from syslog, belonging to card initializing:

[Bug 263059] Re: [regression] 2.6.27-7 sometimes fails to boot (iwl3945 issue?)

2008-10-16 Thread Tim Holy
With a Thinkpad T60, 2.6.27-1 also caused a hard lockup for me. See bug

explainable since the problem is intermittent.

[Bug 284353] [NEW] intel iwl3945 no longer works with 2.6.27-7-generic x86_64

2008-10-16 Thread KennyA
Public bug reported:

When I ran the Ubuntu Itrepid Ibex Live beta CD, my intel iwl3945 card
worked fine. However, after I installed it and did an upgrade to kernel
2.6.27-7-generic x86_64, the card no longer works. When I check lsmod,
the kernel modules show up:

iwl3945 112116 0
rfkill 19236 2 iwl3945
mac80211 253440 1 iwl3945
led_class 13192 1 iwl3945
cfg80211 37136 2 iwl3945,mac80211

However, when I do dmesg, this is what shows up:

[ 26.626080] iwl3945 :0c:00.0: PCI INT A - GSI 17 (level, low) - IRQ 17
[ 26.626265] iwl3945 :0c:00.0: restoring config space at offset 0x1 (was

[ 26.965097] iwl3945: Could not read microcode: -2

[ 26.978864] iwl3945 :0c:00.0: PCI INT A - GSI 17 (level, low) - IRQ 17
[ 26.979013] iwl3945 :0c:00.0: restoring config space at offset 0x1 (was
0x100102, writing 0x100106)
[ 26.979275] firmware: requesting iwlwifi-3945-1.ucode
[ 26.980776] iwl3945: iwlwifi-3945-1.ucode firmware file req failed: Reason -2
[ 26.980779] iwl3945: Could not read microcode: -2
[ 26.980887] iwl3945 :0c:00.0: PCI INT A disabled

At this point, I can not use my wireless card because there doesn't seem
to be microcode for it that the new kernel can see.

[Bug 284352] [NEW] bad percentage calculating partitions

2008-10-16 Thread Pablo Castellano
Public bug reported:

I have just made a clean installation of Ubuntu Intrepid Beta (rsynced few
hours ago).
I have installed it under windows vista using Wubi but I don't think it's
specific to Wubi.

The fact is that once wubi finishes the installation (without any error), then
I must to reboot to finish the installation.
In that part I have seen a progress bar showing a percentage of 114% (cool)
that doesn't seem to be correct.
The title of the window said something like Calculating partitions... (maybe
it's not exact because I have installed it in spanish).

Importante: low.
