[Bug 294811] [NEW] [Intrepid] Hotmail reply functionality no longer working after hotmail's last upgrade

2008-11-06 Thread Jean-Paul
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

If using hotmail, the reply functionality no longer works. If you hit
the reply button, you get to see the screen, but the text area is not
editable. Neither can the previous mail (to which the current mail is
the reply) be seen at all: the text area is blank as well. See
screenshot for an example.

It might be a fault with hotmail; However, hotmail in combination with
FF3 on windows Vista works flawlessly.

[Bug 294811] Re: [Intrepid] Hotmail reply functionality no longer working after hotmail's last upgrade

2008-11-07 Thread Jean-Paul
The workaround works for me, so it is probably a Hotmail bug, indeed.
This also explains why it works on windows; There, the string must be set to
Firefox, and not to Ubuntu.

However, asking the Hotmail people to add the Ubuntu String to their
list of recognized browsers is like asking Satan to repent, I'm afraid
:)

[Bug 21837] Re: Binary patch updating

2008-11-02 Thread Jean-Paul
If the diffs are for the installed files, then I don't see why that wouldn't
work.
However, it seems that Fedora's Presto utilizes an rpm utility, which is making
me doubt if it is flexible enough to adapt it to deb without rewriting major
parts of the code.
If it isn't flexible enough, there might as well be a new project, one that
perhaps *is* flexible enough to work with multiple package management systems.

[Bug 293170] [NEW] [Intrepid] Having Firefox open for a while prevents new flash objects from being displayed

2008-11-03 Thread Jean-Paul
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

When I have Firefox open for a while (I don't exactly know how long, it could
be half an hour, it could be for a couple of hours), and I surf to a
flash-enabled site (for example, Youtube), I don't get to see the flash
content, I only get to see the background color of Firefox.
This continues until I restart Firefox (which can be a real pain because at any
given time I mostly have more than 10 tabs open, and they aren't cached).

I filed the bug against Firefox-3.0, but the problem just as well might
be with flashplugin-nonfree or nsplugin (actually more likely one of
these, but Firefox could provide some debug info, which might be handy).

[Bug 284085] [NEW] [Intepid] Ubuntu Live USB creator creates liveUSB's that are limited in size

2008-10-15 Thread Jean-Paul
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usb-creator

I created a LiveUSB disk on, in my case, an 8GB usb disk and slided the
When Starting up from this disk, documents and settings will be: Stored
in reserved extra space-option all the way to the right (according to
the tool, this would give me a solid 6.8 GB of free room to use within
the LiveUSB disk). I put the Intrepid Beta on it (because the daily
build of October 14th failed to boot, I tried it). Afterwards, I booted
up the LiveUSB disk, this part went fine. But when looking at the free
disk space in nautilus, it always gives me at most just shy of 1GB. This
is roughly (or maybe even exactly) the same amount that nautilus shows
when booting from an actual LiveCD (at least, as far as I've been able
to see).

The problems with this are:
1. that I basically can't update since when I try it, I get no disk space
left errors from synaptic/aptitude/apt-get/whatever
2. somehow the LiveUSB installation claimed the extra disk space, but is
incapable of using it; Therefore, I'm effectively losing space on my usb drive.

This is an annoying bug as I can't install a daily build (at least not
the one from October 14th, as mentioned before) of Intrepid, and I can't
update the beta. Therefore, I'm hampered in my attempts to test Intrepid
(installing the preproduction versions on my hdd is not an option).

All this said, I know it is a very young project, and it has great
potential; I just think that this is a useful bug to get fixed before
the rc of intrepid.

[Bug 102921] Re: Moving the mouse cursor over the gnome-system-monitor temporarily causes network and disk usage to become zero

2008-10-24 Thread Jean-Paul
I'm having this problem as well on 8.04.1, and I had it on Gutsy and Feisty as
well.
It doesn't actually seem to _change_ the disk and network activity levels (I'm
downloading the 8.10 rc right now via bittorrent, and the speed remains the
same when I'm moving my cursor on top of it), but it gives the user the idea
that the speed collapses.

To be fair, the laptop hdd is broken (I'm going to send it to the

[Bug 290843] [NEW] [Intrepid] /usr/lib/rhythmbox/plugins/rblirc/rhythmbox_lirc_default has an error in it

2008-10-29 Thread Jean-Paul
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

On Intrepid (I'm using the AMD64 version with all updates),
/usr/lib/rhythmbox/plugins/rblirc/rhythmbox_lirc_default has an error
in it (causing the skip back 1 track button on any ir remote to fail):

begin
prog = Rhythmbox
remote = *
button = previous
repeat = 1
config = KEY_PREVIOUS
end

This should be:

begin
prog = Rhythmbox
remote = *
button = KEY_PREVIOUS
repeat = 1
config = previous
end

Next to the error mentioned above, isn't it possible to simply include
this in the ~/.lirc folder (as in, the user doesn't have to do that
himself/herself anymore)?

I also found that I had to enter the correct values for the button variables
myself, replacing the values in the file (I made a copy of it in my ~/.lirc
folder to keep everything nicely together). Is that intentional or is it simply
a misconfiguration?
Because to be honest, configuring the file wasn't difficult for me, but finding
out what I had to do to make it work took time. Perhaps this can be done
automatically (perhaps by including a configured copy of this when you install
mythbuntu-lirc-generator)?

[Bug 220009] [NEW] [Hardy RC] Gnome behaves sluggish with compiz fusion activated

2008-04-20 Thread Jean-Paul
Public bug reported:

I am using the Hardy RC since Friday, and have plugins enabled /
disabled other than the standard plugin set (e.g. I have activated
rotate cube and wobbly windows, and of course, consequently disabled
snapping windows). I also have activated Emerald. But now I see that the
GUI almost every GTK+ app (and therefore, gnome as a whole) behaves
quite sluggishly, with unreasonable framedrops and choppy animation.

In Gutsy, there were some plugins that I couldn't enable (most notably
the fire related plugins) without framedrops, but overall the GUI was
snappier than it is here in Hardy.

I have a Zepto Znote6625WD (C2D T7500 4MB L2, 2GiB DDR2, GeForce8600M
512MiB dedicated).

If you need more info, please let me know what exactly.

[Bug 220024] [NEW] [Hardy RC] movie volume in totem noticeably lower than in Gutsy

2008-04-20 Thread Jean-Paul
Public bug reported:

Hm, I seem to be complaining a lot today :p

Anyway, I noticed that in the Totem in Gutsy the volume of movies was much
higher than the volume of those very same movies played in the Hardy RC, also
with totem.
It only happens in totem, in amarok for instance, the volume is unaltered.
This is a problem because it forces me to raise the volume of my speakers to
the max. in order to even hear the volume at a semi-acceptable sound level, and
if *any* other sound is played it plays at such a high volume that my speakers
could tear.

If any other info is needed please let me know.

[Bug 219906] Re: Integrate network-manager 0.7

2008-04-20 Thread Jean-Paul
I'm not a nm or ubuntu developer, but let me ask a couple of questions: Which
Ubuntu do you use? Gutsy, or Hardy?
And is nm 0.7 even released yet?

If it *is* available, then It might be a good idea to see if it can be
included in 8.04.1, it is way too late for 8.04 itself.

Just to confirm: this is definitly too close to our release date. So

[Bug 220024] Re: [Hardy RC] movie volume in totem noticeably lower than in Gutsy

2008-04-20 Thread Jean-Paul
Indeed I have. The Totem volume as well as the master volume slider (I
use the ALSA PCM on front:0 via DMA (PulseAudio Mixer, where there is
only one slider) are both set to maximum. That leaves me only the

had to set to max.

[Bug 212276] [NEW] install and use pavutools by default

possible to install and use PulseAudio's pavutools instead of the gnome/Alsa

Undo everything you did (assuming you indeed tried compiling from source),
because it moght work without undoing it, but I can't say for sure.
Then, (assuming you haven't already done so) open up a terminal, and add this
line to /etc/apt/sources.list:

deb http://nl.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ gutsy-backports main restricted

now, open up synaptic, and install linux-backports-modules.

After that, edit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base, and add this line:

I don't know if it should be reported as a seperate bugreport for JeOS,
but if it uses Ubuntu's repo's then it will likely be fixed as soon as
Ubuntu's bug is.

I'm rather curious a to what is causing this bug.
Any ideas?

I used the ISO with MD5(ubuntu-7.10-jeos-i386.iso)=
341ca65a187c71643079a2f9ee5523b5 to create an image from it.

I created the image like this :
 qemu-img create -f qcow jeos.img 10G
 qemu -m 512 -cdrom ubuntu-7.10-jeos-i386.iso -boot d jeos.img -no-acpi
 -std-vga
I needed this workaround to create the QEMU image :

[Bug 149183] Re: {Gutsy beta] No sound whatsoever on znote 6625WD (HDA intel Realtek ALC268 codec)

2008-01-05 Thread Jean-Paul
I would if it weren't for the fact that in the mean time, I've gone back to x86.
I wouldn't at all be surprised if these steps you menstion are indeed what I'd
have to do after installing linux-backports-modules on x86_64 since these same
steps are applicable to x86.
I found that out after going back to x86.

the x86_64 live disc, installing linux-backports-modules, edit
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base and see if sound works.

[Bug 172254] [Gutsy] When using themes other than Human some controle get ugly.

2007-11-26 Thread Jean-Paul
Public bug reported:

This is more an eye-sore problem than a functionality problem.
When I use a theme other than Human (for example, the T-ish theme), the
controls used in some windows get ugly (for instance, the Login Windows
Preferences window).

I don't know what is causing this (maybe an incomplete set of nicely
defined controls/widgets?), but perhaps something can be done about it?

[Bug 175204] [Gutsy] alsa 1.0.15 not working on ALC268

2007-12-09 Thread Jean-Paul
Public bug reported:

I have an ALC268 sound chipset (Santa Rosa platform) in my laptop (a Znote
6625WD) and just did a clean reinstall of Gutsy to get rid of some problems.
Before I did the reinstall I had sound, albeit with some quirks (like the
integrated speakers not muting when I plugged in my external speakers), but now
that I've reinstalled, I get no sound at all anymore.
These are the steps I take to get sound:

I made a collection of 3 scripts to make getting sound in Gutsy easier.
I did that in steps, and between steps I'd have to reboot:

#Install the appropriate kernel headers
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r`
echo \nLinux headers installed.\n

#Get some prerequisite packages, at least I think they're still prerequisite
for alsa 1.0.15 (they WERE for 1.0.14, at least)
sudo apt-get install libncurses5 libncurses5-dbg libncurses5-dev
build-essential ncurses-dev gettext
echo \nPrequisite packages installed.\n

#Extract the sources
tar xjf alsa-driver-1.0.15.tar.bz2
tar xjf alsa-lib-1.0.15.tar.bz2
tar xjf alsa-utils-1.0.15.tar.bz2
echo \nall alsa tar.bz2 files unpacked.\n

#Remove the /usr/src/alsa dir, if it exists
sudo rm -r -f /usr/src/alsa
echo \n/usr/src/alsa removed.\n

#Make the dir alsa in /usr/src
sudo mkdir /usr/src/alsa
echo \n/usr/src/alsa created.\n

#Move the extracted sources to /usr/src/alsa
sudo mv ./alsa-driver-1.0.15 /usr/src/alsa
echo \nalsa-driver-1.0.15 moved.\n
sudo mv ./alsa-lib-1.0.15 /usr/src/alsa
echo \nalsa-lib-1.0.15 moved.\n
sudo mv ./alsa-utils-1.0.15 /usr/src/alsa
echo \nalsa-utils-1.0.15 moved.\n

#make alsa-driver-1.0.15
cd /usr/src/alsa/alsa-driver-1.0.15
sudo ./configure --with-cards=hda-intel
echo \nconfigured.\n
sudo make
echo \nmade.\n
sudo make install
echo \ninstalled.\n
cd ..

#make alsa-lib-1.0.15
cd /usr/src/alsa/alsa-lib-1.0.15
sudo ./configure
echo \nconfigured.\n
sudo make
echo \nmade.\n
sudo make install
echo \ninstalled.\n
cd ..

#make alsa-utils-1.0.15
cd /usr/src/alsa/alsa-utils-1.0.15
sudo ./configure
echo \nconfigured.\n
sudo make
echo \nmade.\n
sudo make install
echo \ninstalled.\n
cd ..

Then reboot, then the 2nd script:

#step 2 of the process. After this step you should reboot.
sudo echo options snd-hda-intel model=auto /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
echo \n\options snd-hda-intel model=auto\\nadded to the end
of\n\/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base\.\n

Then reboot again, then the 3rd script:

#copy snd-hda-intel.ko to the right location
sudo cp /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/kernel/sound/pci/hda/snd-hda-intel.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/ubuntu/media/snd-hda-intel/
echo
\n/lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/kernel/sound/pci/hda/snd-hda-intel.ko\ncopied
to\n/lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/ubuntu/media/snd-hda-intel/\n

#copy the needed kernel modules to the right location in /lib
sudo cp /usr/src/alsa/alsa-driver-1.0.15/modules/*
/lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/kernel/sound/
echo /usr/src/alsa/alsa-driver-1.0.15/modules/* copied to
/lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/kernel/sound/\n

#Run depmod to update modules.dep and map files
sudo depmod -a
echo depmod -a run.\n

After that, reboot one last time.
Steps 1 and 2 I got from the howto at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto and step 3 I got from
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=3566719postcount=8

I've (s you can see) already gotten a solution in the past, but for some
reason that has stopped working. Any ideas anybody?

[Bug 116326] Re: No audio INTEL HD audio - Realtek ALC268 codec - Toshiba A205-S4577 / Acer TravelMate 6292

2007-12-10 Thread Jean-Paul
I installed linux-backports-modules on my zepto znote 6625WD (using an ALC268
sound chip) and sound _is_ working, but when I plug in my external speakers my
internal speakers are not muted.
I also observed that unlike in windows (be it XP or Vista), here in Ubuntu it
_does_ matter where I plug in my external speaker jack, no autoconfiguration
there (or jack sensing as I believe it is also called).
I haven't tried using the microphone.

[Bug 116326] Re: No audio INTEL HD audio - Realtek ALC268 codec - Toshiba A205-S4577 / Acer TravelMate 6292

2008-01-15 Thread Jean-Paul
I don't know about mic, but after changing the line options snd-hda-intel
model=acer to options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba in
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base on my zepto znote 6625WD (it has an ALC268 sound
chip) the internal speakers *do* mute when plugging in a headset in at the
right jack. jack sensing does not work.
Additionally, when I change the volume with my volume up button, the internal
speakers unmute. Using the volume down button does not unmute the internal
speakers.
This last part can (I think) be fixed by changing which slider the volume
buttons control (even the volume down button to keep some
conformity/symmetry :p) - Is there any way to do that without some hardcore
coding? Thank you in advance.

[Bug 233938] [NEW] [Hardy-proposed] bookmarks in gnome not showing up

2008-05-22 Thread Jean-Paul
Public bug reported:

I've installed all hardy-proposed, hardy-backports (even though t seems
to be empty right now) updates (otherwise this installation is
unworkable with compiz switched on =), but this morning I noticed that
the bookmarks in gnome appear to be gone, and re-adding them is no use,
since they will disappear again immediately. The same goes for firefox,
and perhaps other places which I haven't seen yet.

Also, (I don't know if it's related, but it's a funny time for this issue to be
popping up) when I try to open synaptic either via
systems-administration-Synaptic or by executing gksudo synaptic I get
Failed to run /usr/sbin/synaptic as user root.

[Bug 116326] Re: No audio INTEL HD audio - Realtek ALC268 codec - Toshiba A205-S4577 / Acer TravelMate 6292

2008-06-14 Thread Jean-Paul
There is 1 thing that still bugs me: whenever the audio system is
initialized (like at bootup) and I have external speakers plugged in, I
have to unplug them and plug them back in after audio has initialized.
If I don't, the external speakers aren't used at all, as if they were
never plugged in at all. Since I have external speakers plugged in
whenever I am home, and have earpieces plugged in when I am not, this is
a real problem.

For informational purposes: I have a zepto Znote 6625WD which has a

[Bug 152764] Re: [Gutsy rc] When Compiz Fusion is activated, no windows can be moved

2007-10-16 Thread Jean-Paul
I've done some digging, and I've found that the move plugin is always
deactivated on startup.

I've also tried running gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/compiz, but
since I manually acivated the plugin just before, I haven't noticed any
difference.

[Bug 149183] {Gutsy beta] No sound whatsoever on znote 6625WD

2007-10-04 Thread Jean-Paul
Public bug reported:

I get no sound whatsoever in Gutsy, whatever I do.
I tried installing ALSA 1.0.15rc2, I tried compiling a custom kernel, in which
the snd_hda_intel driver was compiled right INTO the kernel, all to no effect;
according to mplayer, amarok and alsamixer I do have working sound, but I get
sound from neither my integrated speakers nor my line-out.

My laptop is a Zepto Znote 6625WD with an Intel 965PM + ICH8-M chipset
(NB and SB resp.), the souncard itself is a RealTek ALC268 according to
http://www.zepto.dk/Files/15_6625WD_datasheet_1.0_ENG.pdf

If any additional info is needed please post a request here and I will
post the info (I don't exactly know what's relevant here...)

Thank you in advance!

[Bug 149183] Re: {Gutsy beta] No sound whatsoever on znote 6625WD

2007-10-29 Thread Jean-Paul
I'm not surprised, so try this:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=577699highlight=snd_hda_intel%3A+disagrees+about+version+of+symbol+snd_ctl_add
Try the post from pcmanlin (AFTER compiling alsa 1.0.15 from source), I also
had to take those steps on Kubuntu Gutsy final (weird, I know, but it did the
trick).

I am almost certain that an update to alsa1.0.15 in Hardy will fix this
problem, so hang in there ;-)

[Bug 149183] Re: {Gutsy beta] No sound whatsoever on znote 6625WD

2007-10-06 Thread Jean-Paul
Maybe it's relevant, maybe it's not, but I've tried Feisty too (the alternate
disc only, the live disc won't boot on my laptop and crashes to busybox,
luckily this has been fixed in Gutsy.) and there I don't get any sound either.
I've also been trying Gutsy since Tribe 4 and it's the same story there, too.

[Bug 149183] Re: {Gutsy beta] No sound whatsoever on znote 6625WD

2007-10-10 Thread Jean-Paul
I have sound now.
I have tried to compile the 1.0.15rc3(driver and lib) and 1.0.15rc1(util)
ALSA packages again, but this time I've first copied the .tar.bz2 files to
/usr/src/alsa (I had to mkdir it first, of course).
Then I used the cli to unpack them for a change (I've always tried to use the
GUI package before now, silly me).
then the usual sudo ./configure (in the case of the driver with only the
--with-cards=hda-intel switch) , make and make install.

It's of course not as simple as out-of-the-box :P but it DOES work now, and it
works well, too.
I can even use both my internal and external speakers at the same time.

Addendum: it should be noted that I tried this AFTER a kernel update to

[Bug 152764] [Gutsy rc] When Compiz Fusion is activated, no windows can be moved

2007-10-14 Thread Jean-Paul
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz-core

Whenever I activate Compiz Fusion, I find myself unable to move any window.
Resizing still works. When CF is NOT active, I can move windows as normal.

[Bug 334144] [NEW] [Intrepid AMD64] lirc daemon fails to load at startup

2009-02-24 Thread Jean-Paul
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: lirc

I use Intrepid AMD64, and it so happens that lirc always fails to load when the
system boots.
The weird thing is, that when I use the sudo /etc/init.d/lirc restart command
afterwards, lirc loads properly.

The nasty side effect is that I always have to reload lirc by hand
before I can use my media center remote.

[Bug 334147] [NEW] [Intrepid AMD64] using remote after restarting the lirc daemon makes rhythmbox crash

2009-02-24 Thread Jean-Paul
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

May be interlinked with bug #334144, I'm not sure about that.

When I reload the lirc daemon, I also have to manually close and reopen
rhythmbox. after I do this, rhythmbox crashes, and only after I open the
program after the crash will it make use of my remote properly.

So the events (in chronological order) are:
- I restart the lirc daemon: sudo /etc/init.d/lirc restart
- I close rhythmbox
- I reopen rhythmbox
- I play around in rhythmbox (mostly boils down to a little mp3 playing and
seeking)
- Rhythmbox crashes
- I reopen rhythmbox
- Now I can use my media center remote.

Might be a little obvious, but what I would like is for the crash not to
occur anymore (although, if the need for a restart of rhythmbox could be
eliminated as well, that would be great).

[Bug 334144] Re: [Intrepid AMD64] lirc daemon fails to load at startup

2009-02-25 Thread Jean-Paul
The kernel module loads fine, from what I can see:
When I sudo /etc/init.d/lirc restart, it starts working without having to
load the kernel module again (in my case lirc_mceusb2).

The daemon tries to load when the boot progress bar is showing
(alt+ctrl_F2 giving me a view of what happens), _before_ I get a gdm
login screen, so I'm assuming that it is also before X loads.
